Title: Your Favourite Place To Hang-Out?
Post by: dragonboy on Nov 20, 2005, 07:53 PM
There's a bar in Nagoya, Japan where I live called Heaven's Door.
It's pretty hard to find & sits right on the edge of the red light district. It's small & dimly lit with only a few stools/seats & is never very busy.
It's run by a very cool Japanese guy (Ishitastu San) who has the biggest record collection I've ever seen in my life! The whole back wall is old records ranging from pre-war blues to modern day rockNroll.
On any given night you might hear Sonny Boy Williamson, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Velet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Nick Drake etc etc etc.
Unfortunately he doesn't play requests but once he gets to know you & your music taste he'll stick stuff on he knows you'll like.
The tacos are the best (& cheapest!) in Nagoya, the toilet is painted out exactly like the cover of Beggars Banquet, Ishitatsu San often wears Black Sabbath T-shirts & drinks Jack Daniels like a fish!

Where's your favourite place to hang out?
Doesn't have to be a bar, could be a coffee shop, record store or on top of a mountain!

record shop: polyester records, fitzroy - i am a repeat offender (must try and resist a bit more often) impulse music-buyer. this is a great shop.

readings bookshop, carlton: great bookshop, in the heart of cafe/bakery/cd shop heaven which is lygon street

anywhere in tasmania - untouched wilderness, trees, mountains, snow, clean air, great white beaches with no-one in sight... everyone has to have somewhere that puts a bit of zen peace & tranquility back in their lives. tas will always be mine

my favourite record store is shake-it records, the best record shop in the country, people.    www.shakeitrecords.com

my favourite place to see a concert:  southgate house in newport, kentucky, directly across the river from cincinnati.  its a 3 story mansion thats about 150 years old.  the inventor of the tommy gun was born there, and its definitely a very "visited" place in more ways than one.    www.southgatehouse.com

there are tons of places i love to go in southern ohio to get away and have peace.  hocking hills is a mesmerizing place, you cant even imagine that youre in ohio.  id say my favourite is fort hill, just about 30 miles from my home.  its an earthen-wall hilltop enclosure built by natives somewhere between 1500-4000 years ago.  they dont really know who built, or why it was built.  theres a great gorge that run through the valley, nice 60 foot cliffs and great scenery.

Nagoya has a chain of stores called Banana Records.
All the discs are 2nd hand & you never know what you'll find which is why I love hanging out there!
I've picked up so many out of print or deleted CDs for a few Yen, Japan can be a real goldmine!
Apparently the Beastie Boys spend a day or two in Tokyo when they tour here just diggin' in the crates.
This is where I also sell my unwanted CDs.

I love Nature, Nagoya is a fucking Concrete Jungle  >:(

My favourite bars in Toronto include The Only Cafe, C'est What, Squirrely's and Dora's.

I love our little coffee place down the street.  They have a piano and a guitar and couches.  I also love the coffee at Balzac's in the Distillery.  When I used to work there, it was nice on Mondays because you could smell them roasting the coffee.

My favourite record shop is Soundscapes.  I also love Mike's.

My favourite outdoorsy place that is in or around here is my pappy's farm.  It has a pond, and sometimes we camp at night.  And he has a tractor.

:)

Careful with that Tractor EC!
I saw a movie once called Footloose starring Kevin Bacon & that chick from Fame.
Kevin Bacon got drunk or something & nearly died fooling around with a tractor!!!

I'm just worried that you might have a big night at Squirrely's then go to your Dad's & start fooling about with the Tractor, just like Kevin Bacon!  :o

Let us all learn from Kevin Bacon's mistakes!  :-[

Quite right! Another one is when we all make it big in Holywood don't make shit movies like Hollow Man!

Hmm, maybe we should start a "What valuable life lessons can we learn from Kevin Bacon?"
thread?  ;)

Thank you, dragonboy.  I appreciate your concern, and I do try to live by Kevin Bacon's mistakes every day.  However, this will never be an issue.  My Dad does not allow me to drive the tractor.  My Brother, who is younger and less responsible than myself, can drive the tractor.  But I'm not allowed.  I'm only allowed to ride in it.

This is due to an archaic form of thinking that my father was brought up with and that he can't shake.

However, perhaps in the end, it does have something to do with Kevin Bacon.  Let me meditate on this, and I shall get back to you.

(Just kidding about the "allowed" part.  It's just never been offered to me, but I think my Dad kind of likes driving me around in the tractor.  And, hey, I don't mind being a passenger.  Especially because that way I can have a nice can of PBR in my hand.)

Oh BOY!!  I just remembered that in a few days I will be able to drink PBR in a can EVERYWHERE I go!!  Same with Knob Creek!!  Whooo hoooo!!!

My favorite place is being snuggled up on the couch with my dog and my significant other.  Friends are visiting??  EVEN BETTER.  I also really enjoy Waxy's House and Bumpo Heaven (HorkoLad's house).

I live right on the edge of a big city park, me and mrs Grim take a stroll through it every Sunday afternoon its one of my favourite places in the world. There's a great tree that you can climb that has all these wierd deformed branches that make benches in the top of the tree, you can sit and watch the families and kids go by, smoke a hoolie and chill.

Then we take a walk down our neighbourhood main street and go for a beer or a coffee. I love our neighbourhood.

I hear you Golden Shores!
My wife & I just invested in a rather expensive but "worth every-penny-because-it's-VERY-comfortable" new chair.
The new chair is right by the couch, so we're still close, just a lot more comfortable.
With a beer?? EVEN BETTER.
