Title: Heroes from the 80s
Post by: EC on Jan 20, 2006, 09:01 AM
I saw Squid and the Whale recently, and aside from how incredible it is, it got me all thinking back to the 80s, and the icons we had.  So this is the place, folks and cousins and hands and girls:

ahhhhh just kiddin'.  I'm amazed at our different choice, John.  Mind you, my metal phase didn't start until the later 80s.  You're a lot older than me, so our tastes would have been different.

Oh no!!  I was only trying to be really hysterical, and instead I made you cry.  I was being ironic because a) you're like three years older than me, and b) you have such hardcore icons, and I have such weak ones.

Besides, older is better.  It is.  Fo real. :)

Haha, no eighties nostalgia here.
I didn't even have to really undergo that period.
So, younger is better  :)

Though I wouldn't have minded sixties & seventies.

Who are they?
Title: Re: Heroes from the 80s
Post by: peanut butter puddin surprise on Jan 20, 2006, 12:16 PM
the first one is White Lion, that onair travesty responsible for the lone hit "Wait" in about 1988, at the near crest of hair metal maddness, and the second one is GTR, a "supergroup" of Steve Hackett and Steve Howe, of Genesis and Yes, respectively.

BTW:  GTR's lead singer's name was the greatest single performer name of all time:

Max Bacon

 ;D
O man, I've changed my opinion totally, those were the days!

"Max Bacon of the band GTR, notorious for their explicit sexual themes and implicit satanical messages, arrested while speeding through LA naked and high on cocaine"

I can see the headlines...

Oh yeah speaking of cocaine, eighties Ozzy is classic. The Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary Of A Madman, his sidekick Randy Rhoads...  8)

I hated most of the music icons associated with the 80's, excluding aging 60's and 70's hold-over rockers that still maintained some semblance of relevance: The Who, The Stones, Neil Young, David Bowie, The Ramones, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Frank Zappa, Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen.

However, I do love true 80's icons: The Pixies, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Replacements, The Clash, Van Halen (with David Lee), Ozzy and The Jam.

I love 80's TV. Hill Street Blues was a great show. Cheers and Taxi kicked ass and SCTV was one of the great satirical shows - early to mid 80's SNL ruled too. Eddie Murphy is a 80's comic genius. Whatever Rowan Atkinson touched was gold, from Not The Nine O'Clock News to all four of the Blackaddar series. But my favourite show of all time started in 1978 and ended in 1982, but took-off in re-runs: WKRP In Cincinnati. Herb Tarlek was one of the best sitcom characters. It's a fucking crime that the show will never be seen again in its original form. The severely edited version of the series is all that has been allowed to air since the late 80's.

One of my best friends in University had a picture of Samantha Fox above his bed.  He also made his girlfriend get glamour shots of herself in the mall.  (Do you guys remember Glamour Shots?)
