well, I won't say I exclusively drink fair trade coffee but i avoid starbucks pretty much all of the time.  only when i'm on the road or something like that....

mainly, i'm gulping down some folgers.  classic roast, baby... :)

people round here drink Dunkin Donuts like iit is fucking crack.  There is one every 2 miles on every main road.  Not kidding, it is quite disturbing.  Starbucks coffee is not very good, and there just aren't many round here.  Dunkin Donuts is ok, but they never can get your coffe right.  Better off making that folgers at home.  I drink about 2 to 3 cups most mornings.

Coffee isn't my friend.  I drink tea, earl grey if I have it.  Black tea actually has more caffeine too.  I've found that if I don't have a cup of tea in the morning I get headaches.   :-/

I'm not addicted at all.

I started drinking coffee while stationed in the Coast Guard in Maine and Massachusetts. Used to dring insanely like 12 cups a day.  Large Dunkin' Donuts, regular...

Nowadays it's down to 3-4 cups a day. I like "bad" coffee, TigerMart, always fresh. I can do the Starbucks iced coffee but the regular ain't for me.

I hate coffee snobs; assholes who think that the end of the world is behind the coffee bar, shoveling out joe for 2 bucks a cup. Bite me.

I am real basic, but got turned on to Millstone and Paul Newman Organic at home. You can only drink Fodgers and Maxwell House for so long.

Also get into the Cafe Du Monde with Chicory from time to time. It loosens up the pleghm. Great for a head cold.

I love the buzz of coffee in the morning. It' feels like...victory.

FYI Coffee detox headaches suck ass.

i never used to drink coffee at all, but started drinking it at uni (kept me going through quite a few days at a time without sleep)

cafe latte using organic coffee

only one a day (i don't get a buzz from caffeine but its a good way to start the day) with a yum raspberry danish hmmm!

Post by: wellfleet on Dec 12, 2005, 06:46 PM
well... i used to be one of those coffee snobs behind the counter at canada's version of starbuck's called second cup. my dirty little secret was that i never drank coffee. basically, i like my dairy and sugar with a wee bit of coffee and i'm way into the nasty, expensive, flavoured shit. but i did become a bit of a coffee genius and still hold dear an ethiopian crop that is rare but tastes and smells like heaven.
and y'all, the only reason we're snotty is, as anyone who has ever worked in the service industry will tell you, people are freakin' morons. and we had to greet 200 idiots in a row during morning rush. for every guy whi just wants a cup of strong coffee, there's some bitch who wants a skim-milk-extra-hot-extra-shot-but-with-whipped-cream mocha that just makes you want to crack her skull and collect tips in it. whew... it's been 3 or 4 years since i've worked there but i'm still bitter.
now my hubby and i drink millstone or starbuck's brand but go out to sweet bay (arkansas' own!) for fancy stuff.

Quote and y'all, the only reason we're snotty is, as anyone who has ever worked in the service industry will tell you, people are freakin' morons

I disagree 100%. I waited tables 6 years through college and had a great time and made great bank. When I go out these days, I really recognize good service and also recognize the holier than thou assholes.
It's not like you're working at a carwash and there's "some bitch who wants a skim-milk-extra-hot-extra-shot-but-with-whipped-cream mocha". You're working at a coffee shop for God's sakes. Serve!

Seriously don't understand why people have that attitude in the service industry.  S E R V I C E. Hellloooooo????

Hey, I feel real strong about this b/c I used to work with people all the time who would get pissed at customers and then their chi was all out of whack. Not everyone is meant to wait tables or be in the service industry, but most anyone can. No need to fuck your karma up by getting pissed at people you are  S E R V I N G.

-I'll start a thread , it will be great.

Title: Re: coffee
Post by: peanut butter puddin surprise on Dec 13, 2005, 08:44 AM
oh come on now.  i don't know where you waited tables at, but there are some extreme examples much like what ec describes.  sometimes the general public can really be a pain in the ass.  serving them is one thing, but taking their rage-a-hol abuse and unreal expectations sometimes is totally something else, regardless of who they think they are.

not to generalize, but the average abusive customer is white, male, american, mid to late forties, obese, near bald, mouth breathing limpdick of a human being who does this kind of nonsense to everyone they interact with that isn't accepting their sexual advances.
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: TheLink on Dec 13, 2005, 12:59 PM
it sucks because i always treat all these people very respectfully, and they want a tip for grabbing me a donut and collecting my money.  now, if I get 3 or 4 cups and a dozen donuts, sure, i'll throw ya a bone, but i don't tip the guy at burger king for takin my order.  now, waitpersons is another story.  here, in NE, we usually tip 18% to 25%, which I think is quite normal in the US.  If I get attitude or slow service, because there is never any need, then your tip suffers to the minimum of 18%.  Want the extra, then work for it.

It is not hard to pour a cup of coffee and add 3 sugars and light 2% milk.  No need to get annoyed and I usually end up getting no sugars and cream because these people get paid pennies and really don't give a shit.  Maybe I will tip when they get it right! ;)
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: ycartrob on Dec 13, 2005, 01:03 PM
yeah, my point was that I waited tables for 6 years, encountered the same assholes you talk about, BUT I did not plug into it. Maybe that's why I made good money.

There are always extreme examples, and I have many. But what I took from waiting tables for 6 years at 3 different restruants was NOT that people are "freakin morons".

Sorry  :-/

Title: Re: coffee
Post by: wellfleet on Dec 13, 2005, 04:05 PM
zycartrobz... actually, you're wrong, and here's why. In fact, your attitude is the reason most service people behave in a bitter way towards you. You seem to perpetuate the notion that service equals servitude. Sorry, that just ain't the same thing. I didn't mind slinging coffee, I did, however, have my mind boggled with the lunacy of someone who insists on skim milk but wants whipped cream. I also reserve the right to expect to be treated with dignity and respect, not like a servant. I guess I resented the fact that I was treated like I didn't have feelings or a personality by some people. I, too, made serious bank, which isn't easy to do when you get tipped a quarter at a time. That said, I also made life-long friends. I saw a couple meet, date, get married and have two children in the span of my stay at Second Cup. It was amazing to be a witness to all these changes. I also got hooked up with the best job I've ever held through a customer who took a liking to me. Customers brought me birthday presents, invited me to their kids' parties, their parties, their weddings... But I've also had to deal with angry drunks, men who hit on me shamelessly and said awful things, customers telling me about their kidney stones, cleaning up someone's heroin kit from the bathrooms complete with blood, a customer threw coins at me when I dared to tell him there was a charge for the specialty drink he ordered. I've watched in horror as a customer threw a fit because we ran out of chocolate sprinkles and this was the end of the world. I told him to think of all the kids in Africa who don't even have lattes! You're wrong because I'm friendly and charming and sweet and my customers really loved me and made me a card when I left and told me they'd miss me and I was right to be angry at the people who refused to sign the social contract and treat people with respect. Yes, zycartrobz, even those people who serve your coffee. I was not bitter at the world and taking it out on customers. I was sad that someone would use the little power they had as our customer to belittle someone who was just paying her way through college. It's a pathetic display of prowess and it made me feel sorry for them.
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: ycartrob on Dec 13, 2005, 04:32 PM
welfleet, my whole point was ME being treated wrong by counter help b/c I am ordering coffee. PERIOD. No sticking my tongue in someone's ear, no me ordering crazy stuff, no feeling like the person behind the counter is my servant, but by simply ordering a CUP OF COFFEE, I get attitude from the person behind the counter. For ordering COFFEE at a COFFEE HOUSE I get a huff, and a lame attitude and you'd think I was asking the person to scale Mt Everest.

My ADVICE was to grasp the concept that you are there to SERVE and you're really not in a position of authority, ESPECIALLY with assholes. I am not the asshole ordering coffee. Get it?

my challenge is NOT to plug into the negative energy and I do not agree that you have to LET someone dictate how you feel (you lose when you let someone else, a total stranger, a customer, a cowboy who sends a steak back 3x to cook it more, etc... dictate how you feel).

Someone belittling you is a reflection on THEM, not you.

And you really let your positive energy get side- swiped b/c someone wants skim milk AND whipped cream? I mean, that boggles your mind? That should be slim pickings in the realm of the real world, don't you think? Skim milk with whipped cream, so what?

The challenge (again) is to not let others dictate your mood. When you do that, you give your power to them. It's not easy, but practice yields benefits.

Just my opinion.
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: wellfleet on Dec 13, 2005, 06:22 PM
i wish i were so wise and mature. please teach me... although i may not be in a position of authority, i am not there to take your abuse with a smile. and no one dictates how i feel, but when someone treats me like shit, i get my feelings hurt. i wish i were so above it all like you, able to float above and pass judgement. i have dignity and i have my sinful pride and it is completely humiliating when someone throws money at your face. coming face to face with man's inconsiderate behaviour towards man every day is disheartening. i volunteered at a homeless shelter for a long time and at first i was so happy to be doing something good for humanity but then it sunk in that those long lines of people waiting for food were never ever going to get shorter, that people would always be homeless and hungry and forgotten. that kind of decay can and will affect you unless you're a zombie robot from hell. not that i'm saying that's you or anything...
being zen about everyhting only lasts so long for me and then i get bummed by mean people because i'm not mean and can't fathom the inclination to be cruel to someone on purpose.
and the stupidity and hypocrisy of customers extends far beyond the skim-milk-whipped-cream madness. if you've ever seen the movie Clerks... you get the same idiotic question a million times and after a while you realize that most people are really thoughtless, careless and ignorant. and that's totally sad...
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: ycartrob on Dec 13, 2005, 07:09 PM
I saw Clerks. I thought the guys working there were some real sexists and bigots and REALLY unhappy...they also came across as thoughtless, careless and ignorant. The guys in Clerks were assholes, and, I guess the customers were too. So, it's a lose lose situation.

I just see things from a different angle. No biggie.
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: wellfleet on Dec 13, 2005, 09:58 PM
the guys in Clerks were at their wit's end. when a giant price list says coffee... 2$ and you still ask how much the coffee is, you're an idiot. the guys in Clerks were a caricature. I guess you missed that. anyway, by enabling the jerks of the world to continue being jerks we are saying that it's ok. it's not ok to be an asshole, that's all i'm saying. and i also suspect that your above-it-all demeanor is an act, or you've never had to deal with real frustration. that's my angle.
Title: Re: coffee
Post by: EC on Dec 13, 2005, 10:11 PM
Okay.  Woah.

welfleet, I don't think that zycartrobz is holier-than-thou.  And I think he makes a good point.  When I first started waitressing, I couldn't BELIEVE how shitty people could make me feel, and then I realized that I needed to get tough, or else I'd get fired.  And it's true, you can't let the assholes get you down.  Well, it's true that you should try not to let the assholes get you down.

I never felt like a servant when I was waitressing.  A few people tried to behave as though I were their servant, but they had to wait an extra 45 minutes for their drinks.  ;)

I think there's a happy medium somewhere between what both of you are saying, and I'm not just saying that to try and be a Pollyanna.  Shit can get to you.  For SURE.  And, the only reason shit gets to you, is because you allow it to get to you.  But we're human, and we get our feelings hurt.  Or some days we don't care.  But repetitive shittiness directed at your being makes it really hard to maintain an even keel, and some people are better at it than others, and then others (like myself) are more sensitive.

I was just talking to my roommate last night about this.  She thinks I should pick up a little side job as a server again, and I know that if I do that, I will be a fucking miserable jerk.  I had a shelf life, I lasted almost ten years, and I know I can't do it anymore.  I would seriously rather be poor.  And that's me.  I know lifers, and they still like it, and that's cool, too.

We're all different.

I feel like I just wrote a fucking public service announcement.

HAHAHA.  SERVICE.  Man alive.

Anyhow, who the fuck tips McDonald's money-takers?  Is that for real?  Do people really do that?

Never had to deal with real frustration? This is all an act?

Wellfleet, I challenged you on YOUR thoughts that:

 "people are freakin' morons"

"we had to greet 200 idiots in a row during morning rush"

"some bitch who wants a skim-milk-extra-hot-extra-shot-but-with-whipped-cream mocha that just makes you want to crack her skull and collect tips in it"

and all you can come back with is some nonsense about me never having to deal with real frustration and this must be an act?

You haven't the faintest idea of who I am and what I have been through to come to my beliefs, that's obvious by your assumptions about me.

wellfleet, YOUR WORDS summarize what I feel is going on here:

"it's been 3 or 4 years since i've worked there but i'm still bitter".

yes wellfleet, I agree with you, you seem bitter.

Have a great day and hang in there, you don't have to be so bitter.  ;D

PS: The customers in Clerks were a caricature too.   ;)

Post by: ratsprayer on Dec 13, 2005, 10:29 PM
clerks was a great movie, all the way around.

to get anywhere in service or retail, i think you need a certain disdain for most people.  not too much, otherwise you wont come off as likeable, but you have to know how to play the field better than they do.  if you dont give a fuck because you hate most people, youve won half the battle knowing you dont care if they upset you.  most people like that just want a reaction, and it gets their goat to have you sit there and smile and take it like a champ.  i worked in the hotel industry which is its own beast.  the rain outside ruined their vacation, blah blah, ive heard it all.  be smart and know how to play people and make them hear what they want.  every once in a while, youll actually find someone that you really like.

my 2 cents.

im sure you can all agree that im wrong, but hey, thats what im here for.   ;D

i guess talk of my shitty college job at the coffee shop has opened up some old wounds. there are definitely still some scars from some horrible experiences, including physical ones, on my hand, where i sliced off a thick piece of skin. pretty gross and bloody and anyway... i got a little overheated and i'm sorry. it's not bitternerss, i think it's a reminder of how people are not nice to other people and that makes me sad. in saying that, i wasn't nice to you and that wasn't cool. that said, when you see a lot of meanness, cruelty, rudeness, etc every day and directed towards your staff as well as yourself, it can make you a little hard. i like to think that i'm not beyond redemption. usually, i AM polyanna! btw, thanks EC for being the forum polyanna, it's not cheesy, it's vital!

Yep.  You're supposed to, though.  It's a pee-inducing drink, like celery and dandelion tea.  You need to balance coffee with water.  I don't let myself do anything in the morning until I've drank a pint of water.

Nope.  Coffee is a diuretic, which means it makes you pee.  Here's a quote:
"Caffeine: Sources: Coffee, tea, cola nuts, mate, guarana.
Effects: Stimulant of central nervous system, cardiac muscle, and respiratory system, diuretic Delays fatigue."

heh.  Delays fatigue.  hehehe.

EC is correct.  My wife is a health teacher so I have to listen to this crap all the time.  Caffinated beverages strip your body of water- hence making your urinate.  So unless you are drinking decaf, it's diuretic.

heh.  Yeah, I make a 12cup espresso pot in the morning and drink it like regular coffee.   :-/  (I don't use as much coffee as I would for normal espresso, though.)

You're right Jellyfish.  When your body becomes dehydrated (as it would from releasing extra fluids because of the coffee), it then goes into panic mode, and retains fluids in anticipation of you draining them again.  The best way to keep everything flowing properly is to drink a glass of water every hour.

The best way to get rid of water retention is to drink more water.  Hilarious, but true.  :)
