Title: Yer Stuff
Post by: EC on Feb 27, 2006, 10:01 PM
Okay.  Tonight I looked at my copy of Z book and realized that it's getting to the same states as the other books, and it fact might be worse.

ie, it's been loved.  ie it's got wrinkles and folds and a coffee stain and some frayed bits to it.

Like books, I actually really dig that.  It means that I've paid attention to it and got all immersed in it.

Now, some people are not like that.  Some people like to keep their things in really good shape (for collecting, or, I don't know, whatever reason people would do that).

What kind of person are you?  Do you freak if someone returns a book to you with pages dog-eared?  Do you like the look of a worn in cd booklet?

No answer is right.  It's just curiousity.  Maybe I'm trying to justify my messiness.  ;)

Haha - great thread EC!
I'm so untidy except for when it comes to my CDs & DVDs.
I take such good care them!
I hate lending my stuff to anyone else because it always comes back covered in fingerprints & scratches!!! >:(
I've spent so much money on CDs over the years it would be a crime not to take care of them.
I do look at CD booklets but I look at them carefully. Haha
I used to be the same with books but I don't care so much now...it's pretty hard to read a book without breaking the spine, isn't it?

So, you mean you haven't used the Z book as a coffee coaster yet?  Oh man, you're missin' out.  ;)

i am the same dragonboy......but also a bit like EC. Sometimes I buy two copies of the same great record (see: At Dawn) so it's okay to ruin one of them. Kinda of like the Simpsons when Marge makes a separate cake for Homer to ruin ("I didn't know it was Magaggie's birthday").

but, at the very least...the cd's must be kept in order!!!!

My wife is notorious for taking a cd to her car, and months later it ends up in a totally different jewel case. If I wasn't madly in love with her, it would be unacceptable!!!!

Books should be messed up, but not so much that your kids and grandkids won't be able to read them one day (which, now that i think about it, should be the same with cd's, if I were sure cd's will still be around in 50 years.)

this is officially the most threads I have posted on in one day. What the hell is going on here?!?!?!?!?!?

i'm a fan of the vintage-y look. i don't tend to buy stuff that's made to look that way, but i do enjoy it when my stuff starts to wear out some. the top of my acoustic guitar is beautiful for this reason.

i'll take a good picture some sunny day and post it on here.

I cannot buy pre-washed jeans, they have to be blue, blue, BLUE! when I buy them. As they fade, they become more important and meaningful.

CD's and books? Whatever nature and friends do to them is OK. But, they HAVE TO BE IN ORDER (CD's more so than books)! I almost had a meltdown last week because someone (probably my wife) filed an Elmore James CD on the wrong side of the Jane's Addiction CD's!!!

Elmore James goes before Jane's Addiction!!!!!!
 BEFORE!!! NOT AFTER!!!

OK, I am better now.  :-/

With musical books and stuff like that, and books in general I like to keep in better condition, but my instruments on the other hand, after I've owned them for a while I sorta like them scratched up and vintang-esque looking.

i like to think i am a laid-back person, pretty easy-going. with the BIG exception of my books and cds. breaking the spine (or even creasing it) is mostly definitely a crime in my book (sorry, unintentional!)

so far they're all pretty much in mint condition, and trying my best to keep them that way... a couple of the books are a little bent at the corners from being in my bag, but apart from that, i am pretty much obsessively protective of my little library. ditto the cds. no putting the cds down label-side up on the counter, no putting coffee mugs on cd booklets... so i'm in the same camp as dragonboy. they're mine, i paid for them, i love them, so goddamn look after them if i lend them to you!!!!!

i am a freak, all my friends (& flatmates, although i had to have a little word with one, who was doing the cd thing) know it...  ;D

i quit lending my cds to my friends because they would return them with cracks in the jewel case and that drives me nuts because it's not like a broken disc that they *have* to replace, it's "just" a jewel case and they make you feel like some cheap bitch if you ask for a new case...
my mother always puts her cds in the wrong jewel case and can never find anything in less than an hour. to me, that's blasphemous...
my friend chris said i was anal for maniacally alphabetizing my cds so i decided to mix them up just to show him. well, i couldn't sleep for weeks i was so unsettled. then i put them back in order and all was well.
if someone dog-eared MY books i would consider that pretty disrespectful of my property. i've had books returned with notes in the margin in pen! wtf?
so, yes, i'm a wing-nut about my stuff...

My CDs are all over the place  :-/
I wish I had them in order & on display but we don't have the space here.
I have some in the lounge, some in the bedroom, some at my wife's parents house - you get the idea.
At least they're all in one country now...

question: how do you arrange your cds?

I follow 2 things:
1. The artist- or bandname (alphabetic order)
2. Then the releasedate of the cd

Yep, that's the way.
Unfortunately mostly followed by

3. Total chaos, all over the place.

Then hopefully back to 1 and 2.

mine are arranged alphabetically.  my wife, like most women it seems (sorry just being factual based on other posts) can't seem to put cds back in their proper jewel case or back in the order like she found them.  i try to take care of mine the best i can, but i drive something like 40,000 miles a year, and inevitably on my adventure, i come across those lovely pot-hole filled roads or uneven gravel roads, and a lot of my cds are sratched to hell.  they don't skip, but still.  with the wonderful advantage of high speed internet, i probably just as many albums on mp3 as in actual jewel cases.  all these albums are randomly thrown together on cds, and that drives me fucking bonkers.  at this point though, im not willing to put everything back on my computer and do them in order.

I'm bordering OCD.  My stuff is organized with indexs and crazy shit that's not worth the time it takes.  Except the CDs.  I don't deal with the CDs anymore because they scratch and are a bitch to  organize.  I've downloaded all of my CDs onto the puter and have it organzied by band, and within each band, albums by year.  I'd recommend that system, especially if you have an ipod!

Quotemy wife, like most women it seems (sorry just being factual based on other posts) can't seem to put cds back in their proper jewel case or back in the order like she found them.
this miiiiiight be due to the fact that women don't care about dumb shit as much as men do, and focus more on other things.
(you asked for it,  here's a winker so you know i'm only teasing ;))

Okay.  I have no order for my cds.  I never have.  Not true, once I had them in kind of order, but that was when I had a controllable amount of them.  Books are somewhat different - they're in general categories (poetry is together, philosophy is together, porn is to-whoops, just kiddin').  cds are in my room, by the computer, all over the bathroom, in my bag, in shelby's room.

it's weird. when i go to someone else's house, the first thing i look for is their cd collection. when I find it, that's when the judgement begins. If they are in no particualr order, i usually think much less of them. I know that's harsh, but I have issues, ok!!!!!

And of course, if they own crap, I have to leave immediately. Unless it's Debbie Gibson. Because I totally wanted to have sex with her (and go to the mall with her) when I was 14. So that's ok.

We are all a bunch of OCD nerds who need group therapy. (except, of course, EC...who is wonderful. But she should be there, 'cause she makes me smile.)

how do you determine your alphabetising though?  for instance, personal choices here--  i file captain beefheart under C, whereas some might choose to file under B for Beefheart.  also, PJ Harvey is under P and not H.  maybe i should put miles davis under M instead of D.  now i have myself thinking....

Ok
Names: last name. so Miles Davis under D, Pj Harvey under H
Band names: First part (barring "The"). So, The Black Keys under B

I would consider Captain Beefheart a band name, so, under C

Works like a charm!

Title: Re: Yer Stuff
Post by: Coltrane on Feb 28, 2006, 12:17 PM
ok. this is strange. we all have our own strange logic.

For example: I have the Doug Martsch solo record. But I file it with my Built to Spill records. Mostly becaue i see it as just another BTS record, because Martsch is BTS, essentially (not to slight the other guyss, who rock!). And I, of course, just put all of my Will Oldham related stuff under P for Palace, just to have them all together.

But there';s no way I would ever put a John Lennon record with my Beatles records, or Frank Black with my Pixies albums. And if I owned a Keith Richards record, i would keep it away from my Stones records (though they would be alphabetically close.). Why? I have no idea. It just makes sense.

Question: how should I file Howlin' Wolf?? H or W??

oh no. i've gone cross-eyed.
Title: Re: Yer Stuff
Post by: ratsprayer on Feb 28, 2006, 12:42 PM
i think frank black's first two solo albums (self-titled & teenager of the year) deserve to be with the pixies' stuff because they're just as good, IMO.
Title: Re: Yer Stuff
Post by: Coltrane on Feb 28, 2006, 12:44 PM
oh, CLEARLY they are just as good. but i think he's grown enough to have his own section ( and made enough solo albums) .

Teenager of the Year gets better everytime I hear it.

by the way, whatever happened to pong?

PJ Harvey goes under H.

Howlin' Wolf goes under W. (Like Son House goes under H. Trust me, I have struggled with this, done research, prayed, phoned home...).

Camper Van Beethoven goes under C.

Frank Black goes after The Black Crowes.

R.E.M. goes before Radiohead.

Paul McCartney goes before Dave Mason.

ZZ Top goes before Frank Zappa.

Fripp and Eno throw me off. All Fripp and Eno goes under Eno (b/c I have much more solo Eno). All solo Fripp goes under Fripp.

All Christmas music goes under C, however, Vince Guaraldi (Charlie Brown) goes under G and Willie Nelson Christmas goes under N.

This is fun...(and neurotic).  :P

oh thank god! I do have Howlin' Wolf under W. changing the order of cd's requires that I call in sick to work and that is always an awkward phone call.

But I have to keep Frank Black before the Black Crowes and The Black Keys.  and Black Sabbath. why? because. that's why.

i wonder if i can out-neurotic tracy and ratsprayer, who obviously give cd order as much thought as i do. it makes me like you guys even more!
when i worked in the record store, nothing pissed me off more than employees who didn't have a strong command of the alphabet. MacDonald comes before McCartney, not after...
how about band names names after a singer? The Dave Matthews Band? John Butler Trio? Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band? would you file those under the last name of the artist mentioned or under the first letter of the band? so is DMB under D or M? what about stage names like elton john? under E or J? all existential shit i've wrestled with for years...
and then there's the chronology... it makes sense to file in order of release, but i have 40 neil young cds and sometimes i don't remember when the dead man soundtrack came out but i know for sure it starts with a D. so i like to file them alphabetically which, naturally, is heresy to my husband.
what about soundtracks and compilations? at the end in alphabetical order or mixed in with the regular cds?
anyone divide by genre?
i put my richard ashcroft with the verve and dj shadow with unkle and the soundtrack to about a boy with badly drawn boy even though it's offically a soundtrack...
tracy, i feel your exploding-brain pain...
arrrgh...
someone should write a manual we can all follow...

Nick Hornby tried already, "Hi-Fidelity"
They Americanizeified it for the movie but the book is much better.

i never used to have an organising system, the newest cd just went in the next hole in the rack. but then i got too many to fit in the rack... so all descended into chaos there for a while, and it took me FOREVER to find anything. and if you missed finding that particular album the first time searching, you'd have to go through them all again... so frustrating!!

so.. i tried sorting them all, which has kind of worked. i think it's an ali-system, as it's not all the same. mostly i grouped all the albums by one artist together (in chronological order of albums for each artist), then grouped the artists together by nationality (ie sigur ros/mum/emiliana torrini are together, so are manics/super furry animals/gruff rhys/gorky's zygotic mynki etc etc). where i had a few that system didn't work with, i grouped them in musical genre - soundtracks, dancy-type albums i don't listen to much... billy joel albums i wish i'd never bought... seems to work so far. singles are in a drawer by themselves. there are a couple of exceptions - einsterzende neubaten are with nick cave & the bad seeds in the "oz" section...
