This has been done before. Like, in the OFF TOPIC forum.
I'll be entering my senior year of college in the fall. I'm majoring in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice.
For the summer I'm working in the office of a company that sells construction equipment.
I just graduated from the University of Delaware and am currently working part time doing data entry and other boring sh*t.
Then it's on too looking for a full-time job. YAY!
I am a corporate banker in Dallas, Texas. I was thinking about this the other day- i work in a very conservative job, but when i listen to the jacket or go to a show, i change. I went through a nice crunchy phase in college, and i guess the jacket brings it out.

Wow. There's a whole ltta white collar in here--more than I was expecting for some reason. Not to knock that at all, just sometimes youforget that people of all different situations dig the music you resonate with. That's really cool. A job doesn't define who you are either, other thing I forget to remind myself of.
Nice to meet all you guys!
I'm just going into my last year as an English major, and I'll graduate, take the GACE test to prove I can teach, and then get a job hopefully teachin high school English! Hell yeah.

Stop now. It is not too late. (If you choose to continue, there's a guy who comes to Stetson every year and predicts what is going to be on the bar every year - he nailed it my year and is the sole reason that I passed. I've been trying to find his name and I am coming up blank).

Serigraph Artist & Printer at a local publishing company owned by a sports artist. He makes a big oil painting of Tiger Woods, then it's my job to reproduce the oil painting into a silk screened format.
I also frame all of the artwork. I am the shipping department. I am the webmaster. I am the receptionist. I am the cleaning lady. I do everything at my office when I'm not in the studio.
When I get off work, I get straight to work on my own art. For the first time ever, I'm making more money off of freelance art and design than I do at my full time job. That's a great feeling, but also bittersweet as it is very obvious I need to find a better job somewhere.
I work in the oil and gas industry as a planning engineer. I'm a contract worker so I go where the money is. I'm working for Shell at the moment. zzzzzzzzzzz...
I work for a freight company. It is the most boring thing in the world. I have so much useless information stored in my brain because of it like postcodes of places I've never been and when other countries have public holidays. I'm looking for a new job.

I was tearing through my old bar stuff, but I couldn't find his name. I think you have the right name. He gave a 4 hour talk and told us that there would be a family law question on the test and that we could take it to the bank. Sure enough, one of the Florida essay questions was this complex adoption/ divorce question - I had never taken a single family law class but spent about a third of my time doing nothing but Florida family law.
13 hour days is way more than I could ever pull. I got diminishing returns in about hour 3. I did Micromash and liked it. Sample question after sample question after sample question....

We definitely have a little GeoMMJ thing going, Kory. Bread on the table is what matters. I do like where I am, although it would be nice to bring in some heavy spatial analysis work. But I can't complain as we work mostly for local govt's in the 29 county appalachian region of Ohio (counties and municipalities who have limited funds but are trying to move into the modern way of looking at spatial data).
Jrat, I agree with Kory. If you want to end up in the GIS field, there are possibilities all over, just depends on where you are and if you're willing to go where the work is.
Athens is in southeast Ohio, about 2.5 hours from the Cincy outerbelt and about 1.5 hours from Columbus. It's a great little college town set in the foothills of the Appalachians.

I'll probably be going back to grad school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a year or two. I just need to decide what for! Mostly I help people fix spectrophotometers, fluorometers, water systems, hotplates, etc. It's an ok job but I only make teacher-money, which doesn't work too well with a $62,000 student loan. I'll probably be going back to grad school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a year or two. I just need to decide what for! I have a BS in Chemistry, so I should have a wide range of choices at least. I'm considering becoming a brewmaster!
Zymurgy! I used to homebrew quite a bit, need to start up again. Or you could go into Geography, like the rest of us.

Well Love Dog, I am an obit writer for a newspaper in Michigan. I may have called you up sometime. I call funeral homes from all over.
Happy job indeed :'(
Thank goodness for MMJ to keep me uplifted!!
I don't know if we have ever talked or not, but this death business is a little different, huh? Most people just don't understand...but why should they?

No we haven't talked, but I am familiar with your comments on the boards. I just recently signed up but I have been lurking here for years.
Everyone asks me how I can "do the obits." I didn't think I had it in me but I have been working with families and funeral homes for a few years now and I actually enjoy it. If I can make a very difficult time a little easier then I have done my job. There sure are some tough days though - you probably see it way, way more than I do. I have learned a lot, that's for sure. Thinking about mortality on a daily basis can be daunting sometimes. I have talked to people from all over the world and learned a lot about a lot of different things. I consider that an education it itself.
Positive thoughts are being sent your way Love Dog!
Speaking of...I'm an RN in a pediatric ICU. Really sad and hard stuff, day in and day out, but I wouldn't rather do anything else. Thank goodness for this music though.
Any other nurses?

Thanks..glad I'm not the oldest! I work as a Legal Secretary, pretty boring but it keeps me in beer and festivals :)
For some reason I forgot to put down on here that I work at Borders in the Seattle's Best Coffee cafe side of things. I make your drink. Don't order like we're Starbucks. Javakula is not pronounced jah-vah-chill-er. You have no idea how big difference that $0.17 change makes at the end of the day. People who tip $2 for a cup of coffee are beautiful people who deserve big thanks. We don't really deserve that much for pouring you a small cup of coffee, but you dole it out day after day out of some merciful charitable bone in your body. You are beautiful, sir.
I know way more than I ever needed to know about coffee (just try me on decaffeination), and smell strongly of espresso when I get home (not as fun as you might hope), but it's money and I'm college and need whatever help I can to keep my head above gas money.

couple of things haven't yet done in my life. One is work at a record store. I'd like to do that.
And deliver the mail. That will be cool to do. And play in the NBA, but I don't think that's going to pan out.

QuoteQuoteGeographer also, specializing in creating Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Kory, my fellow geographer, what kind of work do you do in the field?
Ha! As you can understand, I usually don't mention GIS when telling someone what I do. It's a bit hard to explain.
We implement GIS for municipalities as well as full service GIS work involving anything someone will pay us for. A lot of stormwater mapping, wastewater mapping as well as stream restoration and various other odds and ins.
I work in the Louisville, KY area for what was a local Engineering firm that was recently acquired by an international company called Stantec out of Canada. Where do you work wharf?
Yep, I usually get a bunch of head nodding and blank stares when I launch into an explanation of what I do. Been in the field 12 years now and my mom still thinks I "do GSI". I was actually thinking you might be a GIS'er when you left such a short description on your post.
I used to work for a local firm when I lived in Wilmington, NC that did nothing but property parcel conversion taking hard copy tax maps and converting to GIS. Have been in Athens, OH for the last 9 years working for a non-profit, grant/word of mouth contract funded entity that is part of Ohio University's School of Arts/Sciences. We run the gamut, much like you, but have been heavy in hosting ArcIMS sites the last several years for local watershed groups, municipalities, etc.
We've recently received some funds to do some raster modeling, which is a nice change, since most of our work and data is vector-based.
Hey, I just learned about GIS and it makes my head spin hah..
Im a 5th year Landscape Architect student at the University of Georgia...any other LA's on the forum?
Still a Tech Support representative for a large lab-equipment company (I think the largest?). Probably going to stay on here until I get my MBA (just starting)...they're paying up to $10k a year towards it so I might as well take advantage! We'll see from there...still hoping to get into brewing some day, if there's decent/good money in it. B.S. in Chemistry.
I'm self-employed after buying out my father's 3 laundromats nearly 3 years ago. You can call me George Jefferson... :P
where are you doing your MBA? In the midst of the application process... a.k.a. my second job
currently work at a firm that raises financing for transportation assets... everything that's big and moves (ships, containers, rail-cars, barges, etc.). Get to see some pretty cool stuff ...
I guess its time to update. I quit teaching elementary to become a full time brewer.

I work for Bluegrass Brewing Company out of Louisville. We are Kentucky's largest microbrewery. We have four locations in Louisville adding a fifth next year and distribute to five states. Locally owned for 17 years.
I've been there almost a year which is longer than anyone else there because our former brewers started there own place in town. Right now I'm an assistant brewer. We have a new boss coming in from dogfishhead next week and I'm hoping he'll take to me and let me climb the ladder a bit more.

Seems to be a number of teachers here, though we lost one to beer, er I mean, brewing. Most of you know I'm a high school science teacher, with a three year stint as assitant principal. Mostly 9th grade physical science, though this year I'm back teaching biology to 11th graders and zoology to seniors, a nice return to my first love. Back to freshmen next year. Love the job, though I hate it, too.
