Nick Nolte's character is loosely based on the leader of the UN's peacekeeping force in Rwanda, Canadian General Roméo Dallaire. I've seen interviews with Nolte regarding Dellaire and Nick doesn't want his character to be compared to him because he said he can't do Dallaire justice - and Nolte is great in the film. Anyway, Hotel Rwanda is great film, but I urge you to seek out either Dallaire's book or the incredible and terrifying documentary that followed, Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire. http://www.whitepinepictures.com/dallairesite/index.htm

Dallaire is a Canadian and human hero and his story needs to be told as does the ongoing tragedies in Rwanda.

Yes, I have been wanting to see Shake hands with the devil for a while now, though I have been a little hesitant because I heard it is pretty gruesome. But I am a big fan of Roy Dupuis (loved him in the Rocket!) and Dallaire is such a fascinating character - it's definitely on my must-watch list. While Nolte's character was on loosely based on Dallaire, at least the movie made sure he was a Canadian, and not some random American hero, lol.

I've HD recorded the Dupuis bio-pic and will watch it soon. Given the circumstances and that the U.S.'s interests were elsewhere at the time, making Nolte's character American would have been just plain wrong and would have damaged the honesty of the film.

That's totally how i felt.
good movie but felt to me it was toned down for the sake of the audience. then again, i guess that's not really a bad thing as the story reaches more people that way.
if you wanna see another impressive movie on the subject watch 'shooting dogs'. it's a lot grittier, less hollywood than hotel rwanda.

Hotel Rwanda was pretty toned down, but I think it suited that particular movie. And that was fine with me, because even the kind of violence they implied i think is far more disturbing then any horror movie, because it's real. I don't think i would have been able to handle it, if they focused on the gory truths of the genocide. And the movie wasn't about the 1 million people who died. It was ultimately about one man's reaction. It was done on a smaller scale, and man, the acting is incredible in that movie. I will check out your suggestion!
I know it got nominated for a few things, namely best actor for donny cheadle and best supporting actress for his wife in the movie

Beyond the Gates (aka. Shooting Dogs) is a much better movie and repiction about the Civil War in Rwanda.
