Title: Horror/Thriller Movie Suggestions
Post by: capt. scotty on Oct 11, 2008, 06:51 PM
Since Halloween is coming up, and I get in the mood to watch horror movies or scary thrillers, figured I see if any of yinz have seen any good ones recently or awhile ago that were good

Last night, watched this horror flick called 'Feast' that came out a couple years ago.

Pretty good, and had some funny parts as well. It was kind of like Assault on Precinct 13 with monsters

Recommendations?

Havent seen original Wicker Man, Repulsion, or Pumpkinhead 1

ALSO: Loved Devils Rejects. Like 1000 Corpses a good bit, but DR was fantastic. Also agree with your 28 assessment. Liked 'Days' a lot, 'Weeks' was okay but not near as good.

I know the 1 Japanese one is the original 'The Ring' (which I didnt like much, and I think Ju-On was the original 'Grudge', but not sure

Not a big fan of old horror movies (Wicker Man), but Ill check Pumpkinhead out and look into Repulsion

Event Horizon (if you havent seen it, its a must)
The Descent
Bug
High Tension
The Orphanage (guy who directed Pans Labyrinth, its good)
Frailty
Exorcism of Emily Rose

All of these probably came out in the last 5 yrs or so (except EH), but I thought they were all very good

I didn't like The Descent, all of the women annoyed me & didn't care if they lived or died. Dog Soldiers was good though (same director)
I wanted to see High Tension but that was before someone told me the ending  >:(
I've heard good things about Frailty...

Just to make clear, The Orphanage was produced by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) not directed.

Capt, if you're not a fan of old horror movies, you might want to give Polanski's Repulsion (1965) a miss.

I like most of the movies in your list too but am mostly a big fan of Italian horror. Pretty much everything from Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci (70s/80s) and Mario Bava (60s). Also love the classic horror from Jacques Tourneur, especially the original Cat People (1942) and Night of the Demon (1957) are amazing. If you're into the classics this is a great buy: http://www.amazon.com/Collection-Snatcher-Leopard-Seventh-Shadows/dp/B000A0GOEQ

I thought The Mist is a B movie all the way with an A director (Frank Darabont). It's pretty campy and predictable, but I still liked, but it's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination.

dragonboy missed one of his favourite horror/comedy movies (and mine too), inexplicably so given his new avatar: Bubba Ho-Tep, starring the legenday Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell. Oh, I concur with the love of Dog Soldiers, although I really liked the The Decent.

A terrific B movie that's as good as any A big-budget horror film is the classic The Re-Animator, based on an H.P. Lovecraft short-story (starring genre great Jeffrey Combs, also from the underrated Peter Jackson horror/comedy The Frighteners, the decent series The 4400 and Star Trek DS9 fame). I urge folks of Lovecraft to look up the films of Stuart Gordon (director of Re-Animator, Dagon and From Beyond).

Now, back to horror or scary films. I have a few that folks have missed that I absolutely love, but first I'd like to add a couple Guillermo del Toro films to sit alongside the beautiful and terrifying Pan' Labrynth and Devil's Backbone: Cronos (Spanish modern vampire film starring Ron Perlman) and Mimic (del Toro's first foray as a Hollywood director).

I love modern and classic horror, and a some of the best are must owns let alone must-sees, for the direction, imagination and atmosphere alone:

Night of the Hunter, directed by Charles Laughton (Robert Mitchum trying to kill two kids who know where his stolen money is located. Fucking great great great film that The Simpsons paid homage to)

The Mummy (with Boris Karloff)
Frankenstein
The Bride of Frankenstein
The Son of Frankenstein
Dracula
The Wolf Man
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein (hilarious and creepy film starring Legosi, Lon Chaney Jr. and Vincent Price as The Invisible Man)
Suspira (from Italian horror master Dario Argento)
The Hound of the Baskervilles - gotta love Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce
Young Frankenstein

Other films I rather like are Cabin Fever, The Ring and Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, The Shining, The Blair Witch Project (say what you will, but the film has imagination and the ending is disturbing), Ghost Story, The Changeling, Brotherhood of the Wolf and Robert Wise's The Haunting (1963), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Donald Sutherland version).

And on to David Cronenberg...

His early low-budget stuff is worth watching and remains highly influential: Shivers, The Brood, Rabid (with Marilyn Chambers) and Scanners (with the terrific bad-guy Michael Ironside).

Dead Zone isn't too frightening as it is thrilling and fascinating.
The Fly rules and Dead Ringers will make you sick. I hope David goes back to doing horror at some point.

Oh yeah, Hitchcock's Psycho is in a class by itself and Psycho II is a surprisingly effective sequel.

Bruce Campbell for President.

Last House on the Left.....it's only a movie....it's only a movie.....
The Romero Dead trilogy + Diary of the Dead(skip Land,it sucks)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre pts 1&2.Pt 1 is prolly the best american made horror film of all time.Pure terror with very little blood.Pt 2 is totally the opposite, gory as hell and funny.
Rob Zombie's 3 movies are great(House of 1000 Corpses,Devil's Reject's and his Halloween remake)
The Evil Dead trilogy,Bruce is the man!
I thought The Mist was pretty good as well, although I have not seen the B&W version.
The Grudge was really scary.
Exorcism of Emily Rose was good.
The original Exorcist stands the test of time, really frightening and shocking.

The most frightening movie that isn't a movie may play out on Tuesday if Canada's Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper gets re-elected by a majority vote - it would mean the Devil would have full-power. I'm praying for a Liberal Party victory (unlikely, but possible) or a minority Conservative government (likely). Amongst other things, the Conservative government wants to drastically cut arts grants and funding, making David Cronenberg, Margaret Atwood, Sarah Polley, Michael Ondatjee and many others in the film/arts communitity very very angry, and they might not like David Cronenberg when he's angry.

That's a good one. I watched it with my best friend when we were teenagers, when it was over she looked at me all scared and said "Would you pee for me?"

Some other Favorites:

The Changeling
Donnie Darko (not sure if I'd call it a thriller but others are and it's my Fav.)
Rosemary's Baby
Pet Sematary
Alice Sweet Alice
Nosferatu
The Haunting (original)

Cheesier Favorites:

Puppet Master (1 & 4 being the best IMO)
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Lost Boys
Troll

When I was little I loved movies featuring zombies as they used to play them late at night on Sci-Fi all the time.  My favorite was Night of the Living Dead.

I also am a big fan of The Shining.

For fans of Nosteratu, Shadow of The Vampire is an interesting and creepy film that offers a few new wrinkles to the vampire/film-within-a-film genre:

I like all the movies everyone has mentioned (especially The Exorcist, Evil Dead Trilogy, and the Zombie (Rob) films) but here's a couple more:
The Omen (original)
In The Mouth of Madness
Hellraiser

On a side note:  I got to meet Bill Mosely last night at the Rock & Shock Convention.  What an incredibly nice guy he signed my copies of House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects plus all the cds I bought from him (filled out my Cornbugs collection).  This guys is a true horror legend and if this event comes to your town I recommend going.  Also saw William Forsythe there too so I got him to sign Devil's Rejects as well.  Roddy Piper was there too and I almost offered him some bubble gum ;).

I saw this in France before it opened in the US & UK. I'd read (in Empire probably) that this was 'one to watch' from Cannes & went into the movie theater (on the Champs Elysees, no less!) completely blind, long before the hype & backlash...scared the shit out of me! Excellent movie IMO, very clever & very disturbing.

Bubba Ho-Tep is indeed one of my favs!
Did you see the trailer for My Name is Bruce though...ouch!

Love all these lists!  :)

Yeah, but it's directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), so I'd say he has more credibility than Shamalan. Its nothing like his other movies, and its almost like he was trying to do a classic B horror movie and it works.

Saw it before, but watched it for the first time in 5+ years on IFC just now, so:

Jeepers Creepers?

I remember watching it the first time, and thinking the first half was great, but the 2nd half was just cheesy

After watching it again, I think pretty much the same, but as a horror movie, the 2nd half really isnt all that  :D when its all said and done

I think it holds up pretty good, and Justin Long keeps it interesting the whole time, so Id probably recommend it to most. Id actually compare it to the movie I started the thread with 'Feast', in that its a horror movie thats not great, but good enough, and it has a comedic side to it that elevates it a bit more.

Thoughts?

I know it's been mentioned before, but seriously. Day of the Dead. Good Lord. Not the remake, the original Romero. Man alive.

"Choke on it!!!"

I haven't seen the Strangers yet but it's a remake of an excellent French film called "Them".

Watched Brain Dead,Kevin Tenney directed("Night of the Demons"), last night.A low budget zombie flick that did not disappoint.Lots of gore, humor and nudity.:P

Hey Jellyfish  :)

I thought that but IMDB says different...In The Strangers FAO:

Is this a remake of the French film, "Ils"?
No. The Strangers was written two years before Ils was made.
