Im only 24, but I told my sister who just turned 21 and had her 1st time to vote today, that I remember sitting with my friends from Penn St in our apartment, on Locust St across from College Pizza, watching Kerry vs Bush and just have our hopes fall like a balloon with helium slowly leaving it.

In my short life, I equated it with being in 2nd period Physics on Sept. 11, 2001, and I remember both just as vividly...Its like a lucid dream

Today is the same exact thing, but finally giving me a happy feeling  :) :'( :) :'( :)

Wow, it is. I never really felt pride in my country until a few hours ago, but I sure as hell do now. After that speech, how could anyone not love this guy? I say we abolish term limts and let Obama keep the job for as long as he can. I feel so good about having him as the face and voice of our country and, while I want to be cynical about all the promises he's making, he makes that so hard to do. I think I'm just going to sit back and enjoy this feeling a while longer. Hope is awesome.  8-)

It certainly goes down as one of the most momentous days in your history. It's fantastic. I visited Memphis a couple of years ago and was really moved to visit the motel where MLK was assasinated. I'd say his spirit came alive in this election.

The questions I ask myself this morning though are:

How much of this massive change of mood in the country was down to the economic crisis? And how much was down to Obama's vision and values? In short, without the economic crash, how close would the race have been? Why did it take the American people SO FUCKING LONG to realise they had chosen the wrong path with good ol' Georgie!

And spare a thought for us Brits. As your country thankfully shifts back towards the centre and a new dawn, we are about to go the other way and elect David "Eton Boy" Cameron!!

For myself, I'm delighted too. I think this is good news for America and the rest of the world. Obama's acceptance speech was very moving. I listened to it on the way to work this morning and sat in the car park till it had finished. A truly momentous time!

However I do feel for the people on the losing side. I'm sure they love the USA as much as anyone else. I disagree with them on most things but their convictions are just as heart-felt and I respect their passion. I'm thinking in particular of MMJfanatic who obviously feels very strongly about many issues. He must be feeling very low today and I hope those celebrating feel able to be gracious to him and others in his position.

Having said that: Woo hoo!!!

Couple of points on this.

McCain was extraordinarily eloquent in his concession speech, much of which was off the cuff and not on his monitor.  Such class and eloquence may have paid off for him had he used it earlier or even incorporated his fighting energy from the night before during his final speeches.

As for the attending audience, while acting a bit less appropriate than we would all like, we should temper our thoughts on how classless they were.  The Kerry concession speech crowd was not a bunch of winners also.  That being said, at least they didn't but out U S A...U S A chants.  Those should be banned.

As the final Senate seats are decided, January will bring a huge change to this country.  As some experts argue that checks and balances, split power, and gridlock are what make our system work, I will gladly take our chances with new and aggressive legislation domestically and emphasizing multinational diplomacy abroad.   :)

Congratulations to Barack Obama and all the lazy ass voters who got off their asses and voted before bitching about America!

Yeah, I saw Oprah in the crowd too, she looked SO proud  ;D

I like McCain, and he did a wonderful job with his speech. I wasn't worried about his home crowd booing...the losing team is always like that, regardless of the party.

I voted for Obama though, and he was superb with his speech. He offers exactly what this country needs right NOW...unification and hope. Is he what we need for the FUTURE? Nobody really KNOWS for sure, but a whole lot of us get the feeling that he is.

I REALLY liked how in his speech, he admitted that change would take time, and that his early presidency might include " setbacks and false starts"...he's being honest. He's inheriting a broken country, but I really believe that he will be an amazing leader, and with time, will lead the rebuilding of (both domestically and internationally) the strength of, and the faith in America.

Strange, uncertain, exciting times  :)

My class and school are actually very supportive of Obama.  In our schoolwide vote obama won something like 312-110.  So, overall my class was very excited and hopeful.  It was neat watching Obama's victory speech with my class and explaining to them that they were watching history being made in their own time.  Unfortunately I did have a few students who changed the tone like the one kid who's convinced Obama's gonna to have everyone killed (you know, since Obama's a baby killer).   ::)

Here's a bit of our discussion (names have been changed to protect the innocent):
Susie: He[Obama] really is gonna take our money.
Beth: Ya, and give it to poor people.  That's a good thing.
David: Well, it's not as bad as killing people in wars.  Obama's gonna stop the wars.

Out of the mouths of babes.  :)

I am not homophobic.

I am for civil unions.  If there was a ballot  initiative in Illinois I would have voted for it.  I am not one to deny 2 people that love each other the same social benefits that I have.

I still struggle with gay adoption.
My apologies then but do you not think that if you make comments like 'It's Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve' and then post pictures like the one above with the comments you did that people will naturally presume that you're homophobic & racist?

I don't see the racism in my post of Obama.  What about it is racist ?

I am SO Happy right now.. what a wonderful election, it was rough at times but we did it!!!  I think this is the start of a great era and I feel so good to finally be here after all these crazy years!
Amazing, just simply amazing to soak all of this in.  Obama will prove many people who believe in him right and the rest wrong.

Yeah that's the pot calling the kettle black.

But I completely understand, losing so bad must really hurt right now. You obviously feel the need to make silly little digs & comments like the one above so go ahead, that's fine...keep on bringing the hate! That's pretty much all you've contributed to this forum of late isn't it?

-I've read the books
-I've been to the classes
-I've listened to the speeches
-I've seen the bumper stickers

-BUT I'VE NEVER BEEN SO TRULY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!!!

Hope is a great thing.  I feel vindicated by being able to place a vote for this quality of a presidential candidate.  I would like to thank every person that put forth an effort to make this possible.  This was not a win for Barrack Hussein Obama; this was a win for a mass of people that have felt apathetic and disenfranchised.  This was not a win for African Americans; this was a win for citizens of this country that felt like they would never have an opportunity to vote for someone that they truly BELIEVED in.  This could have never happened without the time and energy put forth by people that were truly passionate about change and were willing to stand up and take action.  I'm inspired.....It starts NOW, a window is open, we can't sit back and wait to feel the breeze, it's time to step out and swing with all our might.

Yeah that's the pot calling the kettle black.

I just think it's interesting that there are a couple of people running around screaming "racist" and "hate monger" in the MMJ Forums (of all places) when they're the ones making the broad and sweeping generalizations about fellow fanatics that they don't even know.

You already had your mind made up that Taterbug was homophobic, for some reason. Then you decided he must be racist, too, because he posted a photo Obama and his family. You still haven't answered his question - Why did you assume he was a racist based only on the fact that he posted a photo of Obama and his family?

You already had your mind made up that I'm a racist, too, and thus I must be absolutely devastated about the outcome of this election. So you decided to have a round at taunting me in the other thread by calling me out and posting a photo of Obama giving a nice thumb's up. Why did you presume that photo would repulse me? The same reason you presumed Tater is racist for posting a photo of Obama's family?

What I'm getting at is this... What does it say about you, that you want me to be disappointed or disgusted? Why do you want me to be racist? Why do you want to make me out to be a villain?

Why is the despised Republican more jubilant, excited, motivated, inspired about the outcome of this election than you are? LOL

Like I said, pot calling the kettle black...you talk about me not answering people's questions, I asked you twice if you had empathy for the innocent civilians killed in US bombing raids, you chose not to answer me on both occasions. Other people have asked you relevant & important questions & instead of answering them clearly by expressing your views you've said things like 'Why ask me? Read the book.'

I apologized to Taterbug & felt it was best to leave it @ that. I wrongly mistook his comments above the picture he posted as sarcasm, that was my mistake, like I said, I apologized.
In my defense though I don't think I was wrong of me to presume that he might be homophobic...this is the internet, very few people know each personally, comments like "It's Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve" come across as homophobic. Even if he was joking, like I said, this is the internet. Some jokes simply don't carry well...didn't EC leave because of homophobic comments?

You talk about sweeping generalizations about people we don't know yet do the exactly that in your following paragraphs. You state that I "had (my) mind made up that Taterbug was homophobic" & that I "presume that photo would repulse me"...who's making sweeping generalizations about people we don't know now?
I didn't presume that the photo would repulse you, what a silly thing to say. I took pleasure in the fact that the man you continually expressed a strong dislike for (your comments like "McCain is not running against Bush. He's running against Barack Huessain Obama" make me want to type strong racial hate for but since we're not 'making sweeping generalizations about people we don't know now' I won't) won the election & posted a picture of him giving your signature thumbs-up.
I never presumed it would 'repulse you'.

Like I said, you drop Obama's middle name during this election year (and no other candidates) then you must be living under a rock to not grasp the racial and fear mongering connotations. You have to be 100% out of touch with what is going on in this country. And how many times did you disregard my questions to you?

You're lying to yourself (and everyone else here). Jesus says we are all hypocrites. All of us. That includes you; I'd check into it.

this question is more to Ewok/MMJ Fanatic--any ideas for 2012? what about Bobby Jindal from LA? (or is he too religious) thinking Pawlenty? can you honestly see them running Palin?

think the repubs need to regroup and figure out how to not alienate the northeast and the west coast--how to not just lower taxes but go back to smaller govt and not focus on social issues---think there are a lot of good candidates out there but they need to fix some of the probs--they lost 20 or more congressional seats--pretty clear message...just my .02

I couldn't help that, but thankfully hearing a speech on YouTube is a lot like hearing a speech on TV.

OH everyone, relax! this is obviously going to be controversial issue and we're not going to reach agreement so can't we just take it for what it is:
we have our first biracial black president. that says a lot in itself, regardless of his policies and whether or not you disagree with him.  here's the point, or hte most important point in my opinion: we have a black role model and a positive black figure, and that is a positive image for both whites, minorities, and people of color alike. and based on the media, unfortunately, we don't get a lot of that.  do you know how important this is? of course you do. we're just on the right track, even from a very superficial stand point.  (again, regardless of whether or not you agree with him and his policies.)

there's nothing we can do about it, so why don't we just sit back and watch what happens? things are gonna be alright, we're all still alright after the horrifying last 8 years (yeah okay that's an opinion. but statically speaking...)...
who knows. history has happened. we have our first biracial president.  and he's an eloquent speaker, he's a smart dude, he plays basketball real well... and he's got a nice face.  that is something to be proud of, country.

If you said my life would end today if I missed the answer to this next question, I would be confident in my answer:

If a white republican from Alabama is going to invoke just 1 candidates middle name during this election, which candidate would it be?

McCain? Biden? Palin? Of course not.

Now, why would I know the anwser to that? Coincidence? 1/4 chance? Is it b/c I am a genius? Or is it b/c I got out of bed today?
Sure, it's just a "coincidence" that the white republican from Alabama dropped Hussein out there and no one else's middle name. Laughable (and sad).

I meet so many young black men who only want to be a basketball player or rapper. That's all they can see. And only a few of them can bust out a rhyme on spot or beat me in H-O-R-S-E on the basketball court. All that will slowly change as young blacks realize their potential.

Will Smith was so convinced Barack Obama would be elected the President of America on Tuesday he instructed his family to capture the historic day on camera.

The movie star handed out video cameras to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and his children and told them to film everything - so they had a permanent reminder of the election finale.

He says, "It was really important to me to capture it. I got about six video cameras, everybody in the family had video cameras and everybody videotaped their entire day.

"Jada woke us up as 6am. My daughter and I are laying in the bed and we wake up and... she's over us with the video camera.

"We filmed ourselves going down to the polls... and then at night we had the party... My parents came out and Jada's parents (came out)."

And when the big announcement about Obama's victory was getting close, Smith gathered his kids around him - supporting their emotional father.

He adds, "When Barack gave his speech... I just lost it. I was like, 'That's what I believe.'"

Will Smith is obviously a male chauvinist pig for telling his family to do something, Tracy.

(At least I think that's what he/she is saying?)

I don't imagine for a minute these were Will Smith's words.
I take issue with the author of the imdb article for suggesting that instructing ones wife to do something is ok.
That's all.

Doesn't "instructing" mean giving someone instuctions? :-/

Let's not go start burning bras or anything.

My wife "instructs" me what to do about 10x as much as I do her. SO, it's out of love and it's really no biggie, IMO.

Actor Edward Norton has produced a documentary chronicling America's next President Barack Obama's path to the White House.

The Fight Club star's production company Class 5 Films has closed a deal with bosses at American network HBO, who plan to air the finished programme early in 2009.

Norton reportedly approached the Obama campaign in 2006 to document his entrance into the world of politics. Directors Alicia Sams and Amy Rice filmed extensive footage of the Obama in his role as Illinois' senator and continued to shoot the politician as he kicked off his presidential campaign in 2007.

Norton tells the Hollywood Reporter, "Senator Obama's history-making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history."

That sounds great, DB! Thanks for posting.

Saw this in the Chicago Trib today. I liked the message, a lot! And the writer quotes Sam Cooke!  8-)

20 life lessons from the 2008 election

Mary Schmich - Chicago Tribune

November 9, 2008

Life is larger than politics, but politics can teach us about life at large. Here are 20 life lessons from the 2008 campaign.

1 Joy and grief sometimes collide.

On Monday of last week, Barack Obama's grandmother, who raised him like a second mother, died. On Tuesday, he was elected president. It's a deeply sad coincidence, but also a reminder that life gives and it takes away and none of us is exempt from its capricious timing.

2 Be yourself. Your best self.

Barack Obama was his best self in this campaign. John McCain was not. The public knew the difference. The best McCain—the maverick who doesn't talk so much about being one—re-emerged in his humble, blunt concession speech.

3 Loss can liberate.

See above. McCain has been liberated back into his better self, which is good for him and for the country.

4 Be wary of flattery.

Sarah Palin was cynically flattered into a job for which she wasn't prepared. But flattery is like ice cream: You can't blame anyone else if you gobble it up and wind up feeling bad.

5 Cynicism is at best a short-term gain.

6 Do the prep work.

Bluffing, as Palin learned, is like walking on stilts—you can't do it for long.

7 Don't hold others in contempt just because they disagree with you.

Barack Obama preached that message and abided by it. Unfortunately, not all of his supporters have learned to follow their leader.

8 Don't question the motives of people with political ideas different from your own.

Joe Biden expressed that point—a corollary to lesson 7—in his debate with Palin. Question your opponents' judgment perhaps, question their conclusions, but assume that their motives are as good as yours.

9 Tina Fey is smarter than you and I.

10 Failure isn't forever.

Do your work and your fortunes may change. Think Katie Couric.

11 Don't abandon the people you love for your own profit.

Until they make it impossible not to. Think Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

12 Stay on point.

The economy. Not Bill Ayers.

13 Success is a friend magnet.

Have your friends from around the country been e-mailing, texting and calling about Obama and the Grant Park rally, as if the fact that you live in Chicago gives you special insight? Have you been basking in the glow just a little? And isn't it amazing how many people who've never even been here suddenly know the words " Grant Park"?

14 Looks help.

Vigorous, youthful looks help more. What if Obama were 72 years old?

15 Luck helps.

Think about the sex scandal that knocked Republican Jack Ryan out of the U.S. Senate race that launched Obama's national career.

16 Connections help.

Think Richard Daley.

17 Everything runs its course.

Presidencies, generations, banks, interminable campaigns. And, we hope, wars.

18 Progress is patchwork.

On the day we elected a black president, voters in California and three other states proved how many Americans aren't yet willing to treat gay people as full citizens.

19 Radical change is possible.

But radical change tends to happen slowly. See lesson 18. The election of the first African-American president of the United States wasn't the result of one campaign. It was the consequence of centuries of struggle.

20 We should all listen to Sam Cooke.

Obama's a fan of Cooke, the soul singer who had 29 Top 40 hits in the 1950s and '60s. They're all worth singing along with, but the song guaranteed to give you chills—the theme that outlasts the political season—is "A Change is Gonna Come."

There've been times that I've thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on

It's been a long time coming

But I know a change is gonna come.

Not at all--just hanging back letting all the gloating occur and waiting to see what happens next.
Tho' I gotta say making Rahm Emmanuel chief of staff is hardly a good start or a way to eliminate partisanship.

From Bill Kristol in the New York Times today:

Quote...a few minutes into his victory speech, just after midnight, Obama told his daughters, "And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House."

I gulped.

Not out of my deep affection for dogs, fond of them though I am. But because while we've all known that Obama is a very skillful politician, he hasn't until now been a particularly empathetic one. Competence plus warmth is a pretty potent combination. Suddenly visions of the two great modern realigning presidents — Franklin Roosevelt (with his Scottish terrier Fala) and Ronald Reagan (with his Cavalier King Charles spaniel Rex) — flashed before my eyes. Maybe a realignment could be coming.

Obama was, naturally, asked about the promised-but-not-yet-purchased puppy at his press conference Friday. (If one were being churlish, one might say that it was typical of a liberal to promise the dog before delivering it. A results-oriented conservative would simply have shown up with the puppy without the advance hype.)

Obama commented wryly that the canine question had "generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything." He continued:

"We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic. On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So — so whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household."

Here, in a few sentences, Obama did the following: He deepened his bond with every dog lover in America. He identified with every household that's tried to figure out what kind of dog to get. He touched every parent with a kid allergic to pets. He showed compassion by preferring a dog from a shelter. And he demonstrated a dry and slightly politically incorrect wit by commenting that "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

It could be a tough four or eight years for conservatives.

Now, that's Bill Kristol. Mr. Fox News Sunday himself. The biggest, most adamant cheerleader Sarah Palin every had. This is editor of the Weekly Standard. Among the most prominent conservative journalists that exists today - out n proud style. To my ears, it sounds like he's having fun with how special this Obama guy is.

But in all seriousness - fan-boy crushes aside - here's the salient part of his column:

QuoteHis selection of Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff suggests that Obama's not going to be mindlessly leftist, and that he's going to shape a legislative strategy that is attentive to Congressional realities while not deferring to a Congressional leadership whose interests may not be his own. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were both tripped up in their first two years by their Democratic Congresses. Obama intends for Emanuel to ensure that that doesn't happen.

I say this not to rub your nose in anything. I'm saying it to release you from the knee-jerk need to hate on everything. 95% of the population on this planet has experienced something like a euphoric group-exhale-tears-of-joy-this-eight-year-nightmare-is-finally-over and I have to say, it is the most amazing feeling. I have two friends who are studying abroad in Germany right now and they said they could not. believe. the difference in how people react to them - over night.

This whole thing has been a profoundly surreal experience of the effect one person can have on the world and it is ecstatically, insanely fun to feel a part of. There's no reason you can't feel a part of it now too if you want to. Barack - President Obama - hasn't solved anything yet. Though announcing that he will lift this country's ban on stem cell research and put an stop to dangerously unregulated uranium mining near the Grand Canyon on Day 1 is an incredibly reassuring step in the right direction... We do have hope that he will, over time, get us going in the right direction again...

Not the usual playing-not-to-lose, gritted-teeth, I-know-all-politicians-are-assholes, but maybe try to actually get something done in the first couple days before you completely sell out, kind of begrudging "hope" some people sometimes have in their candidates. I'm talking a whirlpool, sunbeam calm of "I recognize this guy as an actual human being - an incredibly intelligent and compassionate one at that - and I'm honestly not scared like I used to be." type of hope.

we have hope we have hope we have hope we have hope we have hope we have hope...

Take a moment to actually analyze this guy's policies, his positions, the people around him. I swear to you he is not right/left. I think maybe this guy is for you too...

I was talking to a conservative friend of mine who said, "It's a shame this election was decided solely on race." I said, "Why, all of a sudden, do you think it's a shame this election was decided on race when every presidential election in the history of our nation was decided on race?" He did not answer, but he laughed and got my point rather quickly. (even though Hillary would have won, or Edwards, etc...)

What Obama and all who voted for him have put into motion cannot be stopped by any partisan politcs from either side.

Liberty and Justice for all.
