Title: Fantasy Football 2008
Post by: corey on Jul 27, 2008, 05:54 PM
So I'm pretty sure we agreed to go to 12 players this year. I think maybe we should give first dibs to the folks that played last year, then we can add additional folks after that.... unless you guys think that's unfair.
:)

I'll get in touch with Dylan.

So can we use the league that we established last year, or so do we have to set it up again? I can't remember who set it up last year.

One last thing... I thought starting a new thread for this year would be easier than using the one from last year in terms of looking back for info.

So what do y'all think about all of this? We're a little over a month away. Woot!

From last year:
Corey
EazyE
Dylan (aMD)
bowl of soup
true
jonT
walter
Bama37
K

dibs for additional players:
capt. headdy
killgies
crispy

Also, I think we should name our teams after our screen names on the forum this year. It got pretty confusing last year. :)

I'm in again and I agree about the screen names thing.  We should start trying to nail down a draft date.  Some of us degenerates play in multiple leagues and need to schedule these things.

I vote for a weekday aftrenoon as most of us come here to avoid work.

i already said i was in in the last thread. 2 other people that didn't play last year said they wanted to play, whoever they were should have dibs.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008
Post by: corey on Jul 28, 2008, 06:09 PM
Gotcha. I'll go check that other thread and see who the other newbies were. I'm pretty sure killgies was one of them.

EDIT: My post above has everyone that spoke up in the other thread. Capt Headdy spoke up before killgies, so I put him 1st on the dibs list, but I guess technically they'll both get in anyway since we're doing 12 players. So anyone after them gets dibs if there's someone (or multiple people) from last year that don't play again this year.

You're accounted for already. :) I went back and found it in the other thread.

So it looks like we have 7 people from last year so far. Who else was there?
Chris (bama 37)
K
knotcameloose

I'll call Chris tonight or tomorrow and see if he's in.
knotcameloose hasn't been on the board since March. I'll try to email him and see what's up.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008
Post by: corey on Jul 28, 2008, 11:32 PM
UPDATE:
I talked to Chris. He's in. That leaves K and Knotcomesloose.

KCL hasn't posted on the board since March. I sent him a PM, but I doubt he'll get it since he hasn't been around. I tried to go to the blog linked in his profile to contact him, but the blog doesn't exist anymore and there's not an email address option in his profile.

K was on the board a little while ago. I also sent him a PM. I assume he'll be in, but he needs to let us know for sure.

So unless Knotcomesloose appears in the next week or so, it looks like we'll have one extra spot.

As far as the draft goes, the middle of the week usually works well for me also.

Awesome... but I won't be reminding you about your substitutions. You might kick all of our asses this year if you actually get around to changing your team out each week.   :)

Who set the league up last year? I think we should set it up the same way it was done last year... all of the same rules and such.

Ok. I think we're good to go. I went ahead and set it up. I had the page bookmarked from last year and it gave me the option to look at last year's settings, so everything is the same except there will be 12 players this time.

Here is the login info. Let me know if you have any trouble getting in.

login: 2008 - The Fans of MMJ
password : Evilurges   (Dylan told me that the E has to be capital)
league ID #: 305720

Please create your team using the screen name that you use on this board. I think it will make life much easier.
It doesn't look like knotcameloose is gonna show up, so we'll have room for 3 new players this year:

capt. headdy
killgies
crispy

Welcome, guys. This is going to be fun!

These are the folks from last year:
Corey
EazyE
Dylan (aMD)
bowl of soup

I have the draft schedule for Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30 PM central. Will that work for everyone, or should I push it back another week?

I heard from Dylan also. He said that's a good time for him... and my brother said that Wednesdays are good as well.

Y'all try to log in and let me know if you can get signed up. Dylan said that it wouldn't let him in. He remembered that there was a series of #s last year, so I found it on the page and sent it to him. I also edited my post up there to include the #.

I'm cool with either date.  I'd prefer earlier; the earlier the better.  Whatever works for everyone else.  You can pre-rank your players in this league and the computer will draft for you if you can't make it for some reason.

thanks corey for setting this thang up.

yeah i haven't been here in awhile. wednesday the 20th works for me, but maybe you could move the draft time back. I'm leaving Omaha that day, so i'm not really sure when i'll be back in Minny. (Going to see the MMJ on 19th) 7:30-8 o'clock should be great for me.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: corey on Aug 06, 2008, 07:55 AM
It's officially changed to 7:30 Central time for the 20th. No more changes.  :)

Also, I saw the recommendation about having 2W/R slots as being too much since we have 12 players. Should I drop that and add 1 defensive player to each team ? Any other suggestions?

I almost added one defensive player the other day, but decided to leave things as they were. I don't really know how 1 defensive player would factor in if we already have an entire defense picked.

So now we need:

Bama37
Capt Headdy

Those are the only 3 that haven't signed up. Bama37 is off work today, so he'll probably sign up at some point today. Has Capt Headdy been on the board in a few days?

crazy format for the positions.  Why not standard yahoo format? It works just fine for 12 team leagues.
or

qb
rb
rb
wr
wr
wr
flex (rb/wr)
te
k
Def

I set it up the same way we had it last year.

QB
2 WR
2 RB
2 W/R
TE
K
DEF
5-6 BN

Walt suggested losing 1 of the W/R positions since there are 12 teams instead of 10 this year.

The 20th is my 28th birthday so if you guys want to let have first pick that would be cool with me ;D  Just kidding nothing to celebrate anymore besides that fact that my body doesn't quite respond the way it used to :-/   I like the idea of adding one defensive player though, be it a linebacker, corner, or d end

Happy early Birthday. Maybe it'll swing in your favor and you'll get first pick. You have a 1 out of 12 chance.  :)

I see Walt's point.   The talent will run a little thin filling those spots with two more teams.  I can go either way with that but I vote to leave the defense the way it is.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: corey on Aug 06, 2008, 05:01 PM
bowl of soup said that he hates the idea of having one defensive player plus another entire defense. Looks like there's a couple of folks opposing that, and I'm good with that, but I don't know what to do about the additional player. If we lose 1 of the W/R slots, does it have to be filled with something else? Aren't you supposed to have a certain number or players?

killies, you mentioned the standard Yahoo format. What does that consist of? I looked at our line-ups from last year and used it as an example for this year, so I have no idea what the standard Yahoo format is.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: Crispy on Aug 06, 2008, 05:29 PM
You can make one of those flex spots a W/T, so you wouldn't be able to put another RB in there, but you could have another stud TE. There's no minimum number of positions. I'm not much in favor of the extra defensive player either I guess.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: corey on Aug 06, 2008, 05:36 PM
That kinda makes sense, but if we already have 2 WRs and a 3rd possible WR with the flex spot, does it really make sense to have a W/T. There aren't that many good TEs in the league.  :)

Also, I guess I'm totally scrapping the single defensive player idea. Looks like it's gonna get a majority veto.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: .Walt on Aug 06, 2008, 05:36 PM
i'm not for a defensive player. but i won't be pissed if it happened. as far as the losing one of the W/R slots...i think with 12 teams free agency will be really thin, and people will be starting players that have no fantasy value. (i'm not for starting the browns third wideout) with 10 teams it worked, with 12 teams i don't see it happening. but i won't be upest either way.

oh, and thanks for moving the time back.

Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: bowl of soup on Aug 08, 2008, 11:44 AM
As a loser who has played these silly games since 1993 - I'm with Killgies.  The standard 1QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 flex (RB/WR), 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF works best.  I've used it in a 16-team league and there were no shortage of WR's - RB got thin though.

Think about it.  There are 32 NFL teams and in a 12 team league, that will require a minimum of 36 starting WR's (assuming no flex WR's are used) and a maximum of 48 (assuming all flex spots are filled with WR's).  There are 32 #1 WR's and 32 #2 WR's.  That's 64 decent options and many teams have attractive 3 and 4 guys.  There's no shortage.

Even at RB it is not that bad - most teams are 2 back teams at this point and there are about 40 RB's that will post decent fantasy points this year and maybe 10 more sleepers.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: corey on Aug 08, 2008, 11:55 AM
Good point. I just didn't know what the standard league set-up was because last year was the first time I played and our set-up was the only set-up I've known.

Is everyone cool with that? 3 WRs.... looks like it should work.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: .Walt on Aug 08, 2008, 04:59 PM
i disagree. i can come up with about 15 teams that don't have a second option maybe even more. and about 10 teams that don't even have a first. i can list them if you want. it's about fantasy value. there will always be players no doubt, but i'm don't want to start a second wideout that isn't any good. just because they are their teams "number one wideout", does mean anything is fantasy sports.
Title: Re: Fantasy Football 2008 (sign up*** please see list)
Post by: Crispy on Aug 08, 2008, 05:02 PM
In some leagues I've played in, kick returns + yards can be pretty valuable and you can fill that flex spot with one of those guys.

Anyone else have an opinion? I don't want to rule anything out. If we go with what Walt is saying, wouldn't that extra W/R slot be useful? Instead of having 3 regular WR slots...

I haven't seen Capt headdy on the board in over a week or so. I sent him an email reminder, but haven't gotten a response. K has been on the board but hasn't signed up. What's the hold-up?!?!?!?!  :)

Im officially signed up

I agree with Walt that it should be 2 WR, then 1 WR/RB flex. The theory of 62 decent WR options doesnt add up just because they are teams with no even ok options. I dont even know who San Fran's #1 is. Ive always played it this way (2 RB, 2 WR, 1 flex)

As far as the defense thing, just having 1 IDP doesnt make sense to me. I started playing using IDP's a couple years back, while at first I didnt like the idea, I think its more enjoyable than team defense and adds another interesting wrinkle. In the past, each team starts a 1 LB, 1 DB, and theres 1 DL/LB flex. If the majority want to do team defense though, thats fine with me.

The scoring works for me mostly. Id change QB yardage value from 30 to 25, but no biggie. Also, I usually play with fractional points (your WR gets 88 yards, he gets 8.8pts instead of 8...trust me, they can be the difference between a win and a loss). Ive usually done 3 pt bonuses for 100 yards rushing or receiving&300 yards passing

Let me know yinz guys thoughts

I don't really care that much and I don't want this to dissolve into a little girl slap-fight (that's what my money-league is for), but every team has options at WR.  San Fran you ask?  They are actually a very interesting team this year.  Mike Martz is the new O-coordinator, they signed Issac Bruce and Bryant Johnson, and Arnaz Battle is back.  I'd take any of the 3 as my third WR this year.

Having a larger roster rewards good drafting; having a smaller roster rewards people who can hang around the internet all day and scoop up waver-wire guys.  Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree with you on the being rewarded for a great draft statement. I always try to make my leagues deeper on the bench so I can stash somebody who either hits it big or makes me look like a 'tard - to a somewhat lesser degree on depth, see Mark Clayton last year for me..but also see All Day Peterson multiple times  ;)

However, if youre comfy with Bryant or Battle, and Id almost even raise you Bruce with how pathetic Alex Smith is, then I say put your keyboard where your mouth is and draft them as your WR3. I think Bruce is barely sniffing Top 50 right now, and youre putting all their WR's on that block? Now Ive never played with none of yinz guys, so Ill save the cheap shots for the draft and season, but youre reachin there my man! Ive slacked this year compared to all prior in my research, but Ill hold that statement.

Actually, in my rule idea post I forgot to post add another bench spot or 2 to add those stash spots, but I forgot to. I like your thoughts on that as Im usually not someone sitting there trying to pick someone up at 5:38am monday morning. Either way, I think starting 3 or potentially 4 WRs a week is somewhat excessive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not drafting those fine gentlmen with my first pick.  But I'd be happy to get one late and would be willing to wager that 2 of the 3 have nice fantasy seasons.  Smith probably won't be starting; it looks like O'Sullivan may beat him and Hill out.

I'm leaving town on Thursday morning and won't be home until Sunday afternoon or early evening. Can someone take a vote on how the official line-ups should go? I'll check in Sunday and make the appropriate changes. Voting ends then. :)
I'll be on the interwebs very little if at all between now and then, so it'd be awesome if someone else would take charge of the voting process. Thanks.

I will be out or town as well Corey so I don't want to keep track of the vote.  My opinion though is that this league isn't serious enough to turn into a democracy.  You took the time to set this up, so you decide what you think is best and we'll all adapt.  If all else fails, just leave it like it was.

Corey you set  it up you decide. Format isn't a big deal as long as we know well enough ahead before the draft. So we know how to draft and where to predict the runs on players.

Is everyone going to be present for the online draft?

On the 49ers recivers. We do know that with the Martz system that the number 3 wr can put up insane numbers. We also know that the Qb will take a pounding and prob won't stay healty

We also know that:

Warner (then)>>Bulger>>>>>Kitna>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Smith or any 49ers QB

Whether we change it up or not, Soup, you best be taking Arnaz Battle and stick to your guns. However, with Carl Crawford and Longoria out for a good amount of time and the Rays likely dropping out of the playoffs, Ill give you a break  ;)

I can live with the rules how they are, but off the record, I say drop 1 WR from the starter sheet...

I wouldnt mind adding a bench spot or 2 though...You know Cedric Benson would rather be a bench warmer than a FA boozing it up on the love boat

So here's what I think. I think it should stay the way it is. Hear me out.

Currently:
1 QB, 2 WR, 2 RB, 2 W/R, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF

What is being suggested:
1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 W/R, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF

I don't really like the idea of being forced to pick a 3rd WR. If we keep it with 2 flex players as is, the folks that want a 3rd WR can play that way with one of their flex picks. Hell, they could play a 4th one with the other flex player.
Right?

OR, if someone wanted to start 3-4 RBs, they could do that. I like keeping it open, rather than being forced to pick a 3rd WR.

So I think I'm gonna leave it. Unless someone can change my mind before midnight tonight. That's how we'll roll with this. :)

I did some reading over the weekend and it looks like there's gonna be a shitload of good RBs... and someone mentioned there's no shortage of WRs as well. So I like the freedom that we have on the current roster.

Cool?

Looks good to me too. I'll be on the road during the draft so if I get a bunch of stiffs you'll know why - I did use the pre-rank to block some that I know I don't want. A couple of times the autodraft has worked out better than when I did it myself anyway!

Dude, you cant tell me you didnt purposely set it up like that though..I dont remember your exact picks, but Im pretty sure that after 4 picks (and you had the first pick of the 4th), you had Garrard, Minny D, Vinatieri, and maybe Edgerrin

You def did have the 1st D and K by a mile

God damn. If Yahoo hadn't lied to me, I would have switched McGahee out and that might have been the difference.... or if Grant could have punched that long run in for 6.  :)

Also, I don't like that they took away free StatTracker on Monday night. Week 1 wasn't even over with yet. But I guess I shouldn't complain. It was free.  :)  I'll definitely be buying it before this weekend.

yeah, that sucks!  I guess it's you're turn, not to jinx myself.  Last year I lost my top 3 RBs in this first six weeks of the season.  That's tough to recover from.  You still have some time to recover, but you're probably going to have to make a few good trades/pickups to salvage your season. Jon T beat me to all the good pickups last year.  I've got my eye on you, Jon!

Headdy, you can afford to say that Favre is a backup QB because you've got Rodgers who is kicking all kinds of ass. True has Edwards. Favre is better than Edwards on any day of the week.

In my big $$$ league, I had MBIII, Owens, and LJ Smith going against Witten and I was down around 33 poitns

I lost 145.2-142.5

If Owens had 11 more yards to make it to 100, or LJ had 30 more yards, I woulda won

BUT, the worst thing is - he had Cutler...If Roid Ref didnt blow his whistle and call that a Cutler fumble so he never got that TD - I win

I HATE FF

...but lets go week 3!!

Post by: Crispy on Sep 18, 2008, 10:28 PM
I had that same Cutler thing happen to me in another league, except I wasn't going to win anyway. However, I had DeSean Jackson on the bench - if he was in, and hadn't thrown that TD away, it woulda been close!

I'm projected to lose in all three of my leagues this week, so I'm feeling pretty good about my chances.

Crispy's projected to beat me by like 20.  He's really got a good team though and I can't really say the same for myself.  I screwed myself by campaigning for the extra flex position because I have ZERO depth.  You live, you learn I guess. That's not to say I'm giving up already but I've already made some mistakes that I'm going to have to make up for somehow. Step one: defeat Chris!

Match-up of the week: Jon T vs 2-0 K!  Good luck BMFs!

Oh and next week I probably won't have enough eligible players to fill my lineup and the ones who will be in there will mostly be scrubs.  You're welcome, Killgies!

Good game, Crispy.  I hope you know my smack talk is all in good fun (I think you do).  I would say I lucked out on Ronnie Brown, but I went out on a limb to get him because he was so good for me last year before he got injured and I didn't believe the "Ricky Williams is my #1 stuff" either, so I'm going to have to take full credit for this W!  ;)  :)

As a PIT homer, I dont expect the OLine to struggle that much here on out.

Philly has a great D, esp pass rush, but Tomlin and players have said almost all of the problems were to due mistakes in protection scheme (1 OLineman blocking right when they were all supposed to go left, RBs doing the same thing), Roethlisberger not reading the blitz correctly, and WRs not running the correct hot routes

So basically, its not really the talent of the OLineman, but knowing the playbook and playcalling

BAL will be a good test on MNF so I guess well see how much they worked out

No shit. He's been a big producer for me in my other league and it hurt me this week. I'm 5 points ahead of the leader in that league in our matchup this week (I'm currently in 2nd). He has PITT's DEF tonight and all of my players are done. If Bush could have put up a few more points, I might would have pulled that one off.... but I assume PITT will come through with more than 5 points, so I'm probably screwed.  :(

I'll take a Steeler win for a fantasy loss any day.
At least i have my other league. I started out slow but I'll be 3-4 now this week, unless Jay Cutler scores over 40 points tomorrow. The win will also be against the undefeated first place team.

Would anyone that has a pretty stacked team want to trade for McGahee in the hopes that he gets healed up and can produce later in the season? He and Ryan Grant were my top 2 RB picks and injuries have slowed them down most of the season. Grant is starting to produce a little more, but McGahee may not be starting this weekend and I'm losing my mind a little.

Throw me a bone, people.

I took McGahee in my big $$ league in the 3rd round. I had him last year and he was just awesome, seriously a lock for 10 pts each week

This year it has sucked owning him. If I picked almost anyone else with that pick, my team would be so much better

Luckily I still have Barber, Bush, and TJones on that team...Willis not doing jack shit this year blows though

I can't talk every week, sometimes I feel like an ass.  But then I remember that I am an ass so it doesn't really matter.  That said, I'm not going to jinx myself.

On a different note, I've been waiting for torain to play all season and he plays a quarter and a half.  He was good for 12 fantasy points, but I just read he's done for the season.  I had him in all three of my leagues!  >:(

Good game, man. You put up a hell of a fight, but no one was touching me this week.  8-)

I have a feeling my game against Crispy on the last game of the season is going to end up deciding which one of us makes the playoffs. We'll see...

Hmm..Im kinda bummed only 4 teams make the playoffs. Thats 1 thing I never checked out before. Every 12 or even 10 team league im in has 6 go w/ top 2 getting a bye the first week of the playoffs.

So now Im kind of bummed. I thought I was right in it but now I think I almost need to win out to make it

If we do this again next year, I say 6 teams go (and this is coming from me after last year when I was #1 seed in my big $$ league and the 6th seed ended up winning)

4 is too few, especially for a 12 team IMO...but it aint over til its over!

Im actually surprised you were able to change the trade deadline at this point (no complaints here, although some of those trades are a little..i dont know..off the base?)

If you cant, you cant. No biggie, but if you do find someway or email Brandon Funston and ask him how to change it (im sure that Dbag has rigged a league or 2 so he has something to brag about), then go for it

AMD, i'm looking for records and statements in the greenwood league. the jacket league, well, i'm looking for excuses and hopefully not last place.

oh, and tim lincecum IS my boy. i had him last year on my fantasy team. just kinda have had a man crush on him ever since. but man-crush aside, he probably shouldn't of won it. but being that good, on such a bad team (especially for a pitcher) should count for something.

That was a hell of a statement this week, Walt. It will be noted in the commish's note.   :)  The whole, "year of the WRs" didn't work out too well for ya in the mmj league though.  I would've been out based on my draft in both leagues but being all over the waiver wire paid off for me.

I'm not going to hate on lincecum. I actually really like him, but I have an obvious bias.

just wanna give some love to the panthers. in my money league i was up .63 of a point, and would have lost if the panthers defense didn't block the extra point. this was my first year playing with fractional points, and i love it. it's so much better. you get everything your player earns. you don't get pissed every time someone ends a game with a 9, and it puts a stop to ties. it's pretty cool, we should do that next year. that's right, i'm thinking about year. i've got my playoff beard growing, and it's not looking good.

also good luck to the playoff teams!

I'm down with that. I'm already thinking about next year also. Both of my teams were a bust this year. I just got a shitty draft in this league, but injuries plagued me in the DBT league that I'm in.

I guess you could say injuries plagued me in this draft as well. My top 2 RBs were McGahee (who I wasn't happy with as my top pick to begin with) and Grant. Grant was slowed down considerably at the first of the year and McGahee has been pretty spotty all year.

not sure if you play any other fantasy sports, but that's the thing with football. it's really 95% draft, and 5% a pickup pans out. if someone gets injured, it's hard to make up that lose. i've always said that fantasy football is pretty much all luck. for example my buddies and i have a draft party, and there's a d-bag that always shows up unprepared, and butchers names, but he wins. maybe i over think things, but in other fantasy sports you can at least make up for a player that doesn't workout or gets injured. i guess you can say, it is what it is.

I meant in the jacket league since there was a three-way tie at the top and we all three had a tie on our record, it'd be interesting to know who would have won out.  We were all three pretty close in overall points, too.  I'm pretty excite about the playoffs in both leagues.

That's right, I made the playoffs in all three of my leagues.  Luck my ass!  8-)

I probably would have accepted that trade, Walt, because Brees is my boy. But I would have really mulled that one over. I couldn't believe Cutler was still available when I went looking for a QB.  Luck my ass!  ;)
