Indeed it does. A terrific modern western.

I'll compile my list tonight at work. I've only slept a few hours and I still have the flu.

One thing is certain: James Stewart and director Anthony Mann will sit prominently in my list.

The best Western of all time is The Wild Bunch. Other good ones are The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Proposition, Dead Man, Lone Star (if it counts), Blazing Saddles of course and . . . I'll think of more later. I just woke up.

Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite books, and the mini-series is also excellent. Gus McCrae (played PERFECTLY by Robert Duvall in the series) is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters.

I urge some of you rookie western fans to seek out films featuring some of the giants of the genre: Lee Marvin, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Alan Ladd, Henry Fonda and James Stewart (and many more).

I find this task of compiling my best/favourite list nearly impossible, but for now, here's 22 that come to mind:

Deadwood - no real list is complete without including this series
Shane - best ever? Yes.
3:10 to Yuma (1957) - better than the remake and then some
The Far Country
The Man From Laramie
The Naked Spur, Winchester '73
Bend of The River
The Commacheros
My Darling Clemetine
Dead Man
For A Few Dollars More
High Noon
Red River
Stage Coach
The Ox-Bow Incident - I've never seen a better psychological western
The Man Who Shot Libert Valance
The Searchers
The Grey Fox
Rio Bravo
True Grit
Once Upon A Time in The West
The Magnificent Seven
The Wild Bunch

How did I forget about Magnificent Seven? It's been too long.

Everybody tells me Ox-Bow Incident is great but I still haven't seen it.

It's a masterpiece, but unsettling. Gotta love seeing Harry "MASH, Dragnet" Morgan and Anthony Quinn in early career roles. Here's the AMG review, which is spot-on:  http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:36976~T1

Geronimo: An American Legend
Last of the Dogmen
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee

OPen Range is excellent. Watch the original Alamo instead of the choppy remake. John Wayne did a nice job directing the near classic and any movie with Richard Widmark in it can't be bad.

Open Range is excellent! Lots of love for love Robert Duval. Like Bbill said, Lonesome Dove is near perfect.

Dances With Wolves is my favourite western & quite possibly my fav movie of all time.

Unforgiven
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
A Fistful Of Dollars
For A Few Dollars More
Magnificent Seven
Wild Bunch
The Assassination Of Jesse James
The Proposition
Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider
High Plains Drifter
Tombstone

Used to love Young Guns, not sure what I'd think of it today though.

Haven't seen the original 3:10 To Yuma but I was really disappointed with the remake...

Glen Ford out-acts Russell Crowe, plain and simple. He makes his version of the character more subtly menacing and sexually creepy. The character development in the remake was full of implausibilities, which aren't there in the original.

BTW, Jack of All Trades is fucking hilarious. Bruce as a swashbuckling masked thief on a French-controlled island. Vern Troyer plays Napoleon.

Appaloosa

Wasnt sure what to expect exactly with this, and heard mixed reviews as well. In the end, I enjoyed it a lot. Its not quite a psychological western or a shoot 'em up, but its engaging and effective throughout. Sometimes you dont know when someone is going to raise their firearm or not, but thats part of the suspense and intrigue. I think Viggo Mortensen is 1 of the best actors going (watch Eastern Promises if you think otherwise), and he's good as usual in this, but Ed Harris (as a verbally challenged town marshall who seems sure of himself but needs reassurance) and Jeremy Irons (as a wealthy member of the community who may or may not have killed the previous marshall) are even better. I found the characters interesting and the actors engaging the whole way through, but if the viewer cant, they probably wont enjoy the movie due to limited action. Great scenery (loved 1 towards the end where theyre at some sort of pueblo-ish hotel, sharp cinematography, and I liked the music backing it. If I remember correctly it was written and directed by Ed Harris too.

Pretty small part..Hes 1 of 3 wealthy guys who seem to basically run the town/say what goes. He hires Harris and Mortensen as the law the protect the town from Irons and his gang
