Title: Do you call yourself an American?
Post by: Leontheslut on May 14, 2009, 01:17 PM
Mickey Reds and I always talk about this...

When you refer to yourself do you call yourself an "American?"

Do you think it's arrogant to call yourself an "American" being that America encompasses two continents and a shit load of countries?
:-?

What are the two continents you speak of?

Does anyone actually say: "I'm North American?"

That's a loaded question sir that sociolingusitic theses have been written about.

Personally I don't think too many care.  I call myself an American (shamefully) when overseas and I've never met a Central or South American that sincerely felt offended by it.  We are the only major country in the Western Hemisphere with the word America in our name.

I dunno, how would you feel if a Canadian refered to himself as an American?

EDIT: Wait aren't you a Canadian, in that case make it a Mexican?

Your logic is flawed. People from the United States of America call themselves American because that is their Country

People from South America are not South American, they are Brazilian, Chilean, Peruvian, etc. because that is their Country

People from Canada are Canadian because that is their Country

There is a difference between a Continent and a Country

The Mexican jokes mean little to Canadians since it ain't them flooding across our border. You guys make excellent buffers  :) In all seriousness, what a fucking mess Mexico is right now, especially in the north. It's sad.

If a Canadian referred to him or herself as American, I'd want them killed.

South Americans believe it's one continent, whereas we were taught in the US that there's a North and South America. They really would never refer to their continent as South America (as far as I know). I've always thought that was interesting.

Dude your questions have been answered.  If you want to play devil's advocate forever, have fun man.

I can see where certain individuals could take offense to it.  I remember when this seemed like somewhat of a PC issue back in the nineties but nothing came of it.

But to answer your question again, it is NOT arrogant.  Many things Americans do are horribly arrogant and I have a million and one stories for that.  This is the name that history raised us with and we have adopted.  It makes perfect sense.  It gives off no sense of entitlement in my opinion

The only logical parallel would be someone from the United Arab Emirates.  My uncle works in Dubai.  I don't think they call themselves Arabian ;)

So what do you think Leon?  You're initial question was whether it was arrogant and most everyone seems to believe that it isn't.  Is there not an underlying issue that certain Central and South Americans take offense to the usurpation of the word?  That part I understand but you have not elaborated.

Canadians call you folks Americans, but many call your country "the States." However, it's used more of a short or Canadian colloquialism.

I never say that I'm travelling to America; it's always "the States" and sometimes "the US."

Canada encourages immigrants to keep their heritage, so it's very common to hear Chinese-Canadian, Indian-Canadian, Native-Canadian etc...

Yesterday 15,000 Sri Lankan Tamils (mostly immigrants) held an all-day protest at the provincial government's parliment headquarters regarding the plight/slaughter of their people in their native country. It was a peaceful demonstration (the third in a week), but it did cause traffic snares in downtown Toronto. Many younger Tamils were born in Toronto, but the ones interviewed all said: "my homeland" or "back home." I'm not sure if the one's interviewed see themselves as Sri Lankan-Canadian, which is exactly what they are. Toronto is home to the largest Tamil population outside of Sri Lanka, over 200K.

Anyway, we are all immigrants and nationality debates can get emotionally-charged.

i have always felt bad for the Tamils but to me that's always been like the Gaza Strip, they'll never stop fighting and even after the declare a cease fire, in 2 years it's starts up again. i understand they want autonomy but they've been suicide bombing and killing innocent civilians for a long time (i guess both sides but from what i've read, more so the Tigers) sorry for the tangent. jaimoe-i had no idea they all settled in toronto area, i always figured they went to india but that really doesn't make sense.

They didn't all settle in Toronto. I believe there's big communities in Montreal and Vancouver too. Toronto has the largest gathering. Same with Italians and Chinese (outside of their native countries). Hell, there's nearly 500K Italians and Chinese in Toronto.

The Canadian federal government sees the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist organization, so are reluctant to even acknowledge the demonstrations. Naturally, the opposition party, the Liberals, acknowledge the demonstrations. The Ontario Government, (Liberal Party), support the Tamil's plight, but there's only so much we can do. It's not as if we can roll our tanks off of our "huge fleet" of ships and start up a war that cannot be won. Plus, we are in pretty think in Afghanistan.

Quotei used to get annoyed, especially around here, irish-amer, ital-amer, germ-amer, then you have the puerto ricans and the new yoricans, etc--it's like come on...we were all born here! BUT then i realized i was just jealous because i'm a midwestern mutt.

Canada encourages immigrants to keep their heritage, so it's very common to hear Chinese-Canadian, Indian-Canadian, Native-Canadian etc...

QuoteWhile we are at it, who the hell decided that the globe should have North America on the top and not the bottom?

There is no top or bottom, up or down in space. Only out.

I heard about that. The Tamil-Canadians in T.O. are devastated. I hope the UN can do something about that civil war.
