Title: Fishing
Post by: pawpaw on Jun 19, 2009, 12:27 PM
Any other anglers here? I've been out several times in the past month...once to my favorite river here in CA, the Pit River. Great trout river, beautiful area, one of my favorite places in the world, really. I've been doing some fishing on the American River here in Sac too...shad right now, though steelhead, salmon, stripers all come through at different times of the year.

I've been ocean fishing a few times here in CA, would love to get down to Mexico and do it one of these days...and I'd LOVE to go fishing in Alaska.

So, what do you guys like to fish for? What are your local waters, your go-to spots? What types of fish do you like to go after? I'll see if I can dig up some pics...

I love fishing!  Haven't gone out a lot this year, I've been super busy.  But, inshore I love fishing for Redfish some people call them Red Drums.  Great fighters.  Big Speckled Trout are always fun to catch.  Offshore, in the Gulf of Mexico, we catch Tuna, Amberjack, Triggerfish, Snapper, all kinds of good eatin'.  We catch Tuna and clean and eat it right there on the boat while fishing for more!  Good ol' Florida Panhandle.

I forgot my favorite - Grouper.

I'm not big on fishing, but it is big here. Land of 10,000 lakes. Lakes with islands and islands with lakes. I'd say the walleye is the most desired. I did late night cat-fishing on the MN river, but it was more about the festivities than anything. Ice fishing is the same way. A group of guys with ice houses, it's kind of like a community on the ice. I've been ice fishing a handful of times, but every time was a experience.

That's what's cool about fishing, all the different types of water and variety of fish. Ocean fishing around N California for me has been salmon, rock fish, and lingcod, but like I said, I've only gone a couple times...I just grew up inland, fishing rivers and lakes, so those are the places I know well and have great access to.

Dude, Walts, ice fishing always struck me as an excuse to drink...and I always wondered how thick the ice needed to be, especially since some guys have stoves in their little huts (so I've been led to believe from seeing Grumpy Old Men). Though, a lot of types of fishing is not much more than an excuse to drink for a lot of folks...  ;D

Lingcod, they're like little underwater dragons...

(I didn't catch that one, but I've caught others just as ugly...REALLY good eating)

I'll check that out later choder...I remember seeing videos of Primus fishing on the San Pablo Bay around the release Sailing The Seas of Cheese. Les was (and probably still is) way into fishing, even wrote a few songs about it.

In addition to halibut and salmon fishing in Alaska, another (more attainable) fishing fantasy of mine is to catch Golden Trout in the Sierras. They're a Rainbow sub-species, and native to a VERY small area of the central and southern Sierras, and only up HIGH, like over 10,000 feet. You have to backpack or horse pack into most of the areas they live, so it's an undertaking to even get to their habitat...I've tried catching them a few times, no luck...maybe just the wrong time of day or year, I don't know. They're not big, but they're beautiful little fish.

I love fishing. I used to only plug fish but then I got more laid back and got into worm fishing. I love just wallering around a boat and not really doing anything, but then all a sudden catching a huge ass bass.

It's really too hot for me to daydream about fishing, though.

i grew up fishing...my dad has a little bass boat, which wasn't big enough to tackle lake eerie, but we took it out around the lakes in E ohio, W PA.. and we used to take it up to Canada every summer for a week (probably like 6 hours north of North Bay? pretty far up there) i  the water is so clear and clean up there. walleye are the best tasting but a pain in the a** because of all the bones.. the one thing i remember is my uncle has this killer cajun batter recipe. i haven't fished in a few years, but i almost took my niece the last time i was home.

you should SEE these blue fish that these guys catch off the pier here in Hoboken! I'll try to find some pics. They are huge...and the Hudson River is disgusting, i can't believe people are eating those, too...

my favorite fishing memory, my brother casting back and hooking my uncle in the ear...i'm pretty much the son my father always wanted...

I'm a fan of both fresh & salt water (we have both)   For me, trout fishing is the greatest, though.   I've done some in Western PA and Massachusetts.

That is one ugly fish.  If I ever pulled that out of the water I would just cut the line for fear of losing a digit.

I LOVE ice fishing. We have an annual ice fishing extravaganza every year  with what started out as a few old high school buddies that has grown to about 20.   Each fisherman is allowed 3 holes. Multiply that by 20 dudes and you are guaranteed to have an excellent day of drinking and one hell of a fish fry. Small mouth or large mouth bass out of the ice is the best tasting fish IMO.  The only thing that sucks is that if it's below zero your fingers will stick to your hooks and tip ups when your setting them.  Oh yeh... and if you gotta go #2 it can be a bit of an adventure. Layers suck if you got projectile diarrhea and your about 200 yards from the closest porta potty ( I almost made it  ;) )....

How do you cut the holes?!?! How thick does the ice need to be?!?! What's the thickest it can be (to still cut holes)?!?! I need to know these things!!!  :D

What's the drink of choice for ice fishing? I'd choose a hot drink, or whiskey, neat...something warming for sure...

Hadn't been fishing since I was like 11 or so, but I started back up the last couple years.

Ive only gotten out a couple times so far this year, but hope to more. I dont think theres really any GREAT fishing within a hour of where I live, but there's some decent places. State College, PA  and the surrounding area is supposed to be the best collection of stream in the US. Im pretty sure Im going up to Lake Erie during Steelhead season in September.

Im going out to Montana in less than a month for sure though to visit my pops and plan on going fly fishing everyday. Should be fun.

Always wanted to do saltwater, but have yet to.

Here's a website that pretty much answers it all.  People on snowmobiles get killed a handful of times, by trying to be too extreme. There's always that dumbass that brings their car on ice they shouldn't have.
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html

The ice auger. It's all about layering your clothes. You put a propane heater in your shack and if you're warm take something off. No need for coolers full of ice.

the beer, but a warm drink is always a good call during winter!

Someone should hire you to write the ice fishing handbook! (Or maybe you just did  ;D)

That's good knowledge my man! I especially like the diagram at the top...that's less ice that I thought was necessary.

I found some old, printed fishing pics...I'll see if I can scan one and post it later today.

We used  to cut the holes with a hand auger that is like a big cork screw that you turn by hand. The hole diameter is normally about 6"- 8".
I just about had a heart attack trying to get thru a foot of ice. By the time I got to my third hole I was ready for a nap. We finally got smart and chipped in for a gas auger.

One if the lakes we fish at has a tavern with a nice big window facing the lake. We would normally set up all our tip ups and go back into the bar and start off with about 2 - 3 bloody marys. While partaking in our beverages we will take turns looking thru binoculars to see if any of the flags on our tip ups have sprung. If we do get a fish on we will hop on the snow machines and hall ass out to the flag and pull out the fish.

We don't normally fuck around with shanties.  If the ice is more than 6" thick we will drive out on the ice. I refuse to drive my vehicle out on the ice. I would hate to make that phone call to my wife telling her that my car is on the bottom of the lake until spring ( I would be jerkin off for the next 20 years).

While on the ice I prefer Jack Daniels single barrel in my flask. It's a nice belly warmer. And some backwoods smokes.

After a long day of trying to mantain a buzz we go to a local supper club for the BEST king cut prime rib  in the world. It could feed a family of 5.  Once we are done gorging ourselfs on red meat and twice baked potatos we will go back to the hotel and jump in the hot tub or take a steam.  I will then go back to my room and collapse and get rested up to do it all over again the next day.

Never a dull moment.   It's all about the fishing  ;).

Hell yeah! That would be cool to have a Forum Ice Fishing weekend! I'll bring a couple handles of bourbon, and if by "backwoods smokes" you mean "fat spliffs", I'll bring some of those too!

Here's a really bad scan of a photo...this was actually taken about 4 years ago, the day before I got married! That's a lingcod...not a huge one, but nice size. Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, CA.

My roommate and I have this week off of work, so we'll doing some fishing. Although he wants to go a couple hours away, but we have maybe 5+ lakes within 15 miles. It seems like a waste of time, but he has the boat.

Trust me, I don't claim to be a knowledgeable fisherperson.

But I'm heading out on a 3 day fishing trip. I just wanna catch sunfish all day. Going to a little place called the Detroit Lakes area. It's about 5 hours away, but it's the start of northern Minnesota or God's country. So it should be pretty scenic.  Weather is going to be great! High 60's and sunny, and mid 50's at night.

But yeah, there's some lakes around...

I believe outside of CA, Minnesota has the most shoreline in the country.
