Title: Chicago Marathon -- 2009
Post by: mjkoehler on May 02, 2009, 12:59 PM
As some of you know, I am running the '09 Chicago Marathon. I used to run a lot a few years ago and had to take some much needed time off due to knee surgery. Well I started back up and it feels fucking great. I feel better physically and it's helping me clear my head.

I am running it for myself, because on old friend dared me too (I never could say no to her), and for an great charity. Rock for Reading (www.rockforreading.org) is a great organization helping to raise awareness to the alarming rise in illiteracy and helping promote literacy through the power of ROCK!

I have established a site for peeps to make donations for those that would like. Some of you I have already sent an email on this but I want to reach a nice broad audience. If you can donate that is AWESOME, but if you can't that's ok. If you are in the Chicago area, come on out October 11 and cheer everyone on. Maybe a small Board meet up since the ever cool Alady and Taterbug are residents? Certainly if there are any other members running, please come out come out wherever you are.

Oh and to sweeten this deal, I can post a video of me playing a song or 2 on the acoustic when I make me goal. I'm no Tom E, but I've been practicing and wrote a song that is ok.

Mike

Probably all over the course, actually - my best friend is running it too, so we're going to try to catch her at a couple different places.  Probably mile 8, 15, 21, and the finish?  What's your pace?

plus my foolish self booked a return flight at 6PM so I have to be motivated to finish with a good time, get the hell out of the chaos that will be the park shortly after finishing, head back to my friends to shower and consumer my body weight in homemade gellato apparently, and hit O'hare. Why did I not pick a flight next day  :-/

I am so excited for you. even better if ALady can spot you there!

ALady-you need to make a MOF sign so he'll see you (and so you can support the album)

Ah, but just think, you'll be at home sleeping in your own bed that same night.  I think you'll be thankful for that!

Penny, right now I'm torn between doing a Run Thru/They Ran sign...maybe one on each side?   :-?  I'd do a MoF sign, but I'm not getting strong "running" vibes from the album....  ;)

I kinda like "Slow Down Ko" for a slogan...but I don't think that's the message I'm trying to convey   ;D

Whole Lotta Losin and Losin Yo Head are good running songs for me, however I dont think "Losin" would be a good theme either.

Cold is good, snow is bad. 40's actually for me would be ideal. Of course a blizzard would be nice and I get trapped in Chicago for an extra day or 2. I wouldn't complain.

Better the cold than the temps in the 90s they had two years ago...it was rough even watching that one!   :D

My bestie is home sick today with a 100 degree fever.  I don't know if she'll even be able to run this weekend.   :-/  I'm bringing her some chicken soup and Gatorade after work.  She requested cupcakes too...heh.

RE: All this vitamin talk.

Eating an apple is much more nutritious than choking down vitamin C pills. Your body doesn't absorb the nutrients in pills as well as it does naturally through eating fruits, veggies, and animal proteins. Mix it up and eat something green everyday.

You all probably already do that and take vitamin as a supplement but I just had to throw it out there.

Oh, and good luck runners!

Ahhhhh. Finally all this shite is dooooone.

OK so it was colder then a well diggers ass in Chicago this weekend. I mean really fucking cold. The problem with the cold is ummm bladders tend to shrink which explains 3 of the 4 stops I hade to make. The lines where way long which f'ed up my time. I'm not one to whip it out and pee on the side of a building or drop a duece behind the dumpster in an alley.

I saw more nekkid female ass then I did the last time I went to one of those clubs. Some girls really are not afraid to drop trough and squat anywhere. I would have made about 4:30-4:45 but because of my potty breaks I ended up doing 5:28. I'm not gonna complain about that at all considering this was my first and it was very crowded.

I saw some freaks along the route. A man dressed in a pink tutu and crown and crocs, a man in full Will Ferral Semi Pro gear complete with giant fro. He was smoking and drinking beer through the course...not sure how. My favs were a group dressed as Marvel superheros. Not only were they having a good time, but they were nice and warm. Smart peoples.

I didn't see ALady on the course, but from where she told me she was at, I was running a pretty good clip so I may have missed her. And the best part, the last mile of the race, Dondonte kicked in and I crossed the finish line to the saxaphone fade out at the end.

All and all a fantastic weekend. Stayed at an old friend's house, who I have seen 18 years and it was a bit emotional. Met her husband who is supercool. Had a great dinner and an excellent post run lunch.

I can now officially cross this sumbitch off my list of things to do.

Body feels good, just stiff. And I'm chaffed in a few nether regions.

EDIT- And I'm fucking SORE today.

Congrats mjk!  You did it!!!!

I didn't see you or my friend at Belmont & Addison...it was really crowded there.  :-/  We only stayed there until the 4:00 crowd went through, and then watched the rest from Chinatown, which was fun.  I did finally see her there, but she didn't see me.  Ah well.  As it turns out it's quite difficult to pick people out of a crowd of 45,000!   ;D

She finished in 4:02...she really wanted to break 4 this year, but it was pretty impressive that she finished at all with her swine flu attack earlier in the week.  I had one friend who did it in 3:08 and qualified for the Boston Marathon (woohoo!) and another who pulled something midway and finished in 5:06.

It was COLD just watching you guys!  I had a full-on winter coat, scarf and hat on.  Winter comes early to Chicago this year!

Congrats Congrats Congrats!  Do you think you'll do another?

....and did you do the ice bath?   ;)

I probably will not do another, besides I do not think my wife would put up with this again.

I kept an out out for your signs, but yeah it's hard to keep an eye out in the huge crowds at some of the stops. I really was gunning for the better time, but silly mother nature kept calling.

Official results for the stats dorks in us all.

Overall Standing - 29,211 (I think there was just over 48,000 people officially)
Men's Overall - 17,245

Official net time is clocked at 05:28:04. I can back out at least 30 minutes for bathroom breaks if not a little more. Stupid bladder.

QuoteAhhhhh.

Good for you man...like I said-mad respect. One day I hope to get there, but for now I stick with my lil 5K's.  :P
