My favorite ones all died.
:(
Yeah Eisey, mine too. :'( But I have two cats now and sure their my faves too I mean my kids. Chloe and Maceo.
my little cat is still hanging in there (by a thread) - i've had her since i was 10, but she lives with my parents, so i don't get to see her much :'( mum occasionally puts her on the phone when i call them though ;D
wish i had a photo to put on here, she is so cute. grumpy as all hell, but so cute!
Is sparky there like half fox, half corgi?
QuoteIs sparky there like half fox, half corgi?
half corgi, half otter....
(actually terrier)
he's a bit of a scoundrel, watch your wallet around that one there.
I have a grey tabby cat that I named "Tommy the Cat". He's a trip.
Here's another one of Sparky, during his short lived Depeche Mode phase.
reeeeeeeeally primushead. you have a cat named tommy. not you, surely, PRIMUShead. ;)
say baby do you wanna lay down by me, say b-baby do you wanna lay down with me, s-say b-baby do you wanna lay down by me, say baby? SAY BABYYYYYY? weeee, woo do do dugga do.
ahem.
My little kitty is sick and I really hate it when she's sick. She's had this ongoing eye infection since she was a babe, and it occurs when she's stressed out. It makes me feel like shit, because I honestly think we're connected, and whenever I'm stressed out, she gets sick, even though I try not be stressy around her. I think she picks up on it. So it's an even worse kicker. But a good reminder to chill, I guess. Poor little number.
we had a photographer in the house the other day and he took a few of the pretty lady.
yeah speaking of Tommy the Cat...can anyone here play that on bass? I would like to attempt it but I am short a 6 string.
EC your cat is so gorgeous!!!! especially with that little ginger chin... :)
she looks a bit like my brother's cat mischief... she was just black & white though. she passed away a couple of years ago... :'(
When my sisters & I were young we had dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters & goldfish. Just not all at once.
I remember I wanted a hamster so bad until I got one & he kept me awake every night chewing on the metal bars of his cage!
when i was little we had two goldfish called batman & robin... who mysteriously changed appearance every now and then... ;)
QuoteEC your cat is so gorgeous!!!! especially with that little ginger chin... :)
I just told her you said so. She seemed quite pleased through her puffy eye. Yeah, her chin is almost my favourite part of her. After she drinks water there's usually a drop or two that stays there, and it's quite lovely. My true favourite part of her are her paws. Her toes are speckled pink and black like her little lower lip is.
Oh my god. As IF I am talking about my cat this way.
Quotewhen i was little we had two goldfish called batman & robin... who mysteriously changed appearance every now and then... ;)
Ali, I suggest you sit down because I have something important to tell you...
i wouldn't worry about it... i talk to my cat (when i'm at home) and she's completely deaf (not that she really understood when she could hear, but you know...). it's kind of sad - you have to slap the ground to try & get her attention now.. poor little baby
when i scratch under lucy's chin, her little bottom lip sticks out. kind of adorable!
what's her name? tell her she is definitely the cutest cat i've seen for a while!!
Thurston (Moore) & James (Taylor)

thurston is a GREAT name for a cat!
thank you, I agree.
My kits Crosby (has big moustache) and Emmylou (very pretty, high voice) will be a year old in May. ;D
I'll see if I can get a picture up.
sheesh, a lot of you named your pets after musicians, and here i just named my kids that way.
theres hyde orion trent. i actually didnt name him specifically for karl hyde of underworld, but thats where the influence came from. my daughter is sydney zimmerman trent, named after syd barrett and bob dylan. my wife is the greatest for allowing this to happen! ;D

Tracy, Daisy is a beautiful animal. And Sparky just frickin rocks.
everyone's dogs are so cute!! if i can get the scanner working, i'll have a pic up of my little cat.... it was so good to see her when i was home for easter, but my poor little baby isn't doing so well - she's got kidney failure.... she's 18, and had a good life, but i've had her since i was 10 & it was hearbreaking to see her so thin, just sitting there looking at me. she's on some steriods now which seem to have helped her, but i won't be home again until november, and she might not make it til then... :'(

here's my lame cat. sometimes he's cuddly, sometime's he'll stay less than an inch out of finger's reach, and normally he's ridiculously anti-social. but if i catch him while he's sleeping during the day and start rubbing him, he's pretty freindly. i've actually made him purr a couple times. my parents need to get a better cat. our old was awesome (but he was stolen)
my cat, foot foot, just had five kittens.

weird timing. my youngest cat, tiny dancer, just had 3 kittens. two survived and are doing excellent. pics to come when they emerge from under the deck.
I just got a new kitten and we adopted our friends cat. I named the Kitten "Owen" and the other cat's name was "Sunny" so I guess he will remain named "Sunny" :-/

Yes, I know they are big girls. I'd probably overfeed my kids too if I had any. The darker one is Emma, AKA Kill Muppet because when she lived outside she would pluck birds out of the sky with one swipe of her forest cat paws- hummingbirds being her favorite. That's one reason why she lives inside now.
Orange one is Sam AKA Hot Buttered Lightning because that's what it's like when she runs. And she always runs even though she's almost 12 and very overweight.
ROBOCAT!!!

QuoteRobocat seems to have some devil inside. Is it a boy or girl? What do you call it for short?
Robo (for short) is a girl and she is most definitely the spawn of Satan.
Yeah, she's such an old lady- she was trying to clean the ceiling!
Thanks fr the love, Colleen! All of his vets suggested pills, chemical treatments, putting him to sleep. Nothing worked. Then my caraazy moms heard about the acupuncture-It's pretty amazing what ancient medicine can do... highly recommended fr any struggling pets!

Yeah, I am no western medicine worshipper, in fact I am highly suspicious of most of it. Acupuncture is amazing. It definitely added a year to my gran's life and I am going to take my old kitty soon for her asthma. It's encouraging to see more holistic stuff out there. Take care.

Does anyone have tips on making two dogs get along?
My sister's dog and my dad's dog have to live together and neither are happy about it. We have to keep them on a leash everytime they see eachother or they'll rip eachother apart.
It's driving me insane!!!!!!! :-/
It depends on how aggressive they are. Dogs are like 10 year old boys, sometimes you have to let them fight to establish dominance before everyone's cool with one another. If you think they can establish dominance on their own without injuring each other, that would be they way to go. One of them will beat the other up and the loser will buy the first round of beers.

Thinking back to my days as a pet advise for Purina...
You will need to introduce them slowly. Keep them in seperate areas and bring them around for small periods of time and only increase when they start getting along. Reward good behavior (treats work wonders) and if they start growling and yapping at each other do something to distract them. Dogs have the attention span of a nanosecond and unless you catch them in the act, have no clue what you are correcting them on. It's a slow slow process sometimes. They may not ever fully get along also. As D said, they are pack animals and there is usually an alpha and pretty much makes the others know.
This is Bailey my spoiled rotten Lhasa Apso and my "fuzzy bunny". She can identify each of her toys on command! She chased a bird down once and killed it. Great watch dog and very possessive. Requires a lot of play time and that gets me off the couch!

Thanks for the info.
I think they are both really jealous dogs. Sometimes they seem fine with eachother but if me or my sister are around them it's hell.
...and keep them on leashes during the introduction period, so you can immediately correct them if they get aggressive.

Actually it's a Frenchton (I guess that's what they are called). It's half Frenchie half Boston Terrier.

Well, if you'd like, you can puppy sit this Saturday while I'm at the Langhorne Slim, Low Anthem show. ;) :)
Ruckus - D'oh! Cute pics - and love puppy name!
We had a bit of bad luck last night. Lucy, aka my favorite dog, hurt her leg. She was running around chasing our other girlies (Teddy and Mojo) and somehow really did some damage to her back leg. ETB took her to the vet this morning and she was put on pain meds (aka doggie downers). We are bummed cuz we are supposed to fly out to Chicago on Saturday for the PJ shows but don't want to if our girl is not well.
Her limp seems a bit better tonight - but I'm not sure if it is because of the drugs or not. I am incredibly distrustful of doctors who prescribe pain meds at first blush of a problem.
Thinking good thoughts...
great pics BDR and Wizz!
tell Lucy to get well soon!

Awwww.....I love Brittney's! My first dog as a child was a Brittney/Springer mix (Zippers) and my mother-in-law has the most precious Brittney named Bird/Shadow (started out as Bird and got renamed Shadow by her Grandbabies...we still call him Bird). Well, I dont have any pets because I cant afford one, but here's a pic of my cousin's dog Tyson.
He got him in early 2006 and I was actually the one who named him. My cousin and I lived in Myrtle Beach that summer, in an apartment that you werent even allowed to have pets, but we brought the little guy anyway. So far in my 25 years, those 3 months in Myrtle were the best time of my life, and my cuz and Tyson were a part of it. A couple of days ago, Tyson got hit by a car and was killed. He was only about 3 and half years old. I feel like a part of that summer died with him.
My cousin was pretty rough on him trying to get him trained, but Ive never seen a more obedient dog. He was chill as hell too. My cuz says he feels like someone in his family just died.

Just be prepared, they are a LOT of work. They have a lot of health problems. We're fortunate with Martha that she only has skin problems and some allergies, but many of them have issues with their eyes, heart, hips, and breathing. They can be a handful to say the least. They are stubborn as hell and quite territorial, even the females. She gets along fine with Boone for the most part, but every now and then they get into it pretty good over food and toys. She's to tough for her own good. Boone is at least double her weight right now and she'll still start crap with him. She's a funny dog though, they are quite the characters

He likes to sit upright.
This is Cheech. He just pitched up in our garden a few months ago looking hungry and dirty and wearing an old collar. We really didn't want a pet and we tried ignoring him. Our neighbour told us that he had been sleeping in her garden for quite a long time. He hadn't been looking after his coat because of being homeless and his fur was grey and greasy.
We took him to the vet to see if he was micro-chipped because we didn't want to adopt him if he was someone else's cat. Anyway, he wasn't and the vet reckoned he was about 7 or 8 years old and in good health. We took him in and he was really hungry. He ate anything we put in front of him! We shampooed him and the towel turned black with dirt, so it took a few goes to smarten him up. Once he'd settled in we took him back to the vet for a check-up and it turns out the vet threw us a curve ball - he's got a severely over active thyroid (his thyroid blood count was on 180 and it should be 15!) As a result of that he's also got thickening of the heart walls. He's now on daily medication for the thyroid (we've got it down to 90 at the moment), and liquid medicine for the heart condition (which he hates). So far he's cost us about £500 in vet's fees and £50 a month in medicine. The other option is to have the troublesome thyroid gland removed.
My wife is always wondering where he came from. I reckon it was either an old person who died, or someone who couldn't afford the vet bills and kicked him out. Either way, he's doing pretty good now. He's got a great nature, loves attention, but never sits on your lap (great!) I don't have a picture to back it up yet, but when he falls into a deep sleep he rolls on his back with his legs splayed open! And he does it out in the open too. I found him in the back garden on the concrete doing it the other day!

Here's 2 of our family pets, Cocoa and Bella.
They're not spoiled in the least! ::)
We've had Bella since she was a puppy which will be 3 years this X-mas. She's a newfie/lab mix and a very cool dog. We got her as a bridge to my oldest dog Reilly (the old man is 13 and father time is really catcing up with him). She loves water and my parents have a pond where she goes flying off their dock to retive sticks we throw in the water! She's definitely got the energy of a lab and not the laid back attitude of newfies! :D Here's a shot of her in action!
Then. a llittle over a year ago, my wife and I found Cocoa dodging traffic on a busy road. My wife opened the door to my truck and he hopped in and the rest is history! :) We posted that we found him at the local shelter but no one came looking for him. Turns out, he's about the same age as Bella and they became quite fond of having each other as playmates. I really didn't want to name him in the cliche of something chocolate as he has some chocolate lab in him. But my girls were bound and determined that his name was Cocoa, so Cocoa it was! :P
And here's a pic of old man Reilly:
He's a springer mix and I've had him since he was a pup. He's not too fond of the young labs. >:( And he's also pretty freaking spoiled!
From a no pet household we've got the animal bug! Between me, my wife, and my sister-in-law we've got a horse. Apparently it's a Czechoslovakian Warmblood and has potential to be a pretty good jumper. Although luckily for the horse I'm too heavy for it!
I am able to do a lot of work with it on the lunge rein though, as well as free schooling it in the exercise ring. It's fascinating stuff.....the old horse whisperin' Robert Redford thing!

Warmbloods are supposed to be really good for jumping and dressage.
Are you going to take him to shows or is he just for trail riding?
What is his name?
It's a mare called Gina. She already had the name when we bought her, otherwise I'd have gone for something more flamboyant!!
My sister-in-law is going to go for shows and dressage in future. I'll see if I can post some video footage sometime.

Aww. What a cutie! I love retrievers, though Minnie is like the Lab of Steel. We bought her this "Kong Genius" toy yesterday. It's label touted the toy's indestructability... she had it torn apart in an hour!
;D
I think we had a great Pets thread in the old new forum and I had pics of my beautiful cat and dog. My son asked me yesterday if I loved one more than the other and I said no because I love the cat for her cat-ness and the dog for her dog-ness and that they are such wonderful animals and I couldn't get another pet right now because I don't want to mess with perfection.
Today, my kitty Suki got hit and killed by a car in front of our house. I was standing about 4 feet away. Everything went wrong in about 10 seconds. I tried to wave the driver down and stand in front of the cat, and the dog jumped out of the car, distracted the driver, the cat bolted towards the house. Horrifying but the only blessing is that she went pretty fast. My 3 kids were home and handled it all much better than I did.
I've had 2 pets die in my arms from euthanasia, but never had to deal with this kind of gruesome trauma and can't get it out of my head. My dog is acting very lost too.
So here is to the best cat ever. She just looked like a regular cat but her personality was amazing. (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/jkmm/IMG_0197.jpg)

I'm sorry, Jaye, that your cat died. When my cat died I took it much harder than the kids.
Sorry to hear about your cat. She was an absolute stunner. Like you say watching one being put to sleep is hard enough so what you have just gone through must be really difficult.
Oh my. I'm so sorry for your loss jaye. I hope that time begins easing the trauma you endured sooner than later.
I echo the sympathies jaye. So sorry for your loss. Cherish the great memories you had with her!

This thread made me miss my pup. But you know what they say.... if you love them (but are way too busy to give them a great life) you have to set them free.

Good looking dog!
Bigsky, you have 3 girls too? What is it about this forum and people having 3 daughters? I know of Yac and myself already! :cheesy:
I have 2 male dogs and they are my only male companions in my house as well. Although our female dog is truly my dog. Go figure...
Sorry to hear that Jaye. That's terrible.
Bigsky, your dog is beautiful. What is that? Looks like some kind of Australian something or the other.
I recently had to get rid of our lab. My youngest son is highly allergic. He has stayed sick for about a year now with one thing after another. We tried our best to make it work, but in the end the only option was to get rid of it. Luckily, my parents adopted him so I know he's well taken care of and we still get to see him regularly.
Thanks...he is a stud.
Chase is pure mute...;)
Australian Shepard mix...sometimes he looks like a Great Dane.
My pup was an Australian Shepard mix that looked nothing like an Australian. Australians are good dogs though, that's for sure

Thanks everyone. I don't think we're going to get another cat because I'm afraid of this street and it's impossible to have an indoor cat with my kids running in and out all the time. I've been thinking about getting a puppy though and this unfortunate event might make that happen. I'll miss that cat energy around though. :(
Really beautiful dog Bigsky.

Add me to the three daughters list. That might be why I'm on the forum so much - got to escape the early teenage girl hysterics.

Ugh. Mine aren't there yet, but they
think they are sometimes. I rennovated our attic to make a playroom for them (also a way to get them out of our hair when we want some quiet time ) and I'm already making plans to make that my escape room when the hormones start kicking in. I'm planning on putting about 3 deadbolts on the door and even then, I'm wondering if that will make it secure enough...

My oldest is only 5...so our biggest problem is the fights over the 15 Barbie dolls they have.
Chase is a great dog...it must be the Australian Shepard in him; the kids can crawl all over him, even our 9 month old, and he just lays there. Chase is only 2, so I'm sure he thinks he's one of the kids.
It's great having him, being a boy dog, we just sit around and talk about all the hot bitches in the neighborhood...;)

I've got 3 kids but 2 are boys - BUT I am one of 5 sisters so I understand everyone's concerns. ;)
For some reason I have never owned a male pet - cat or dog. 3 dogs, 3 cats all female. I think a boy puppy sounds good.

Julie I am so sorry to hear that! I am tearing up reading it! That is so awful. I understand how hard it is, the sudden unexpected death of a pet. One day our old lab just died right there in the middle of the kitchen from a seizure. Kids home, too. And I just lost it. It is so hard but with time it will get better. So so sorry to hear it. They are like our babies.

Zan, Mr. Charlie looks a helluva like our chocolate lab mix.
Here is a pic of our two labs I use for a beer label for one of my homebrews (Two Dogs Ale; it's a clone of Two Hearted Ale ):

It's been a long time since I visited this thread. Since then we've added Alfie, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, to our home. We found out that some acquaintances of ours abandoned their own dog as a stray which led to it being destroyed. As a consequence of that we ended up volunteering at a dog rescue centre near where we live. We had one successful foster dog who was rehomed and Alfie was meant to be our second foster. He was a dog at the centre who had to be muzzled on his walks because he was supposedly very dog aggressive. I walked him a few times and he was as calm as can be. He wasn't overtly dog aggressive, but just hadn't been socialised with other dogs and reacted out of fear.
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that after a few months of fostering at weekends my mother-in-law wouldn't let us take him back. We are at work all day but he stays with her until we pick him up each evening.
He's an absolutely brilliant friend - I've gone from sitting in front of a TV all weekend watching sport to just walking miles with him. There's nothing better in my weekend than walking for miles with him on a cold sunny day.

What cuties! I think I saw this pic on the old new forum and thought your dog looked like mine. We think ours is a boxador. Lab in looks, boxer in personality and body.

Yeah. Our vet also thinks Cocoa is a boxer/lab mix as well as his coat has some brindle in it. He's a very good dog although he can be a little o.c.d. when it comes to his feeding time. He as skin and bones with frostbite on his ears when we found him and god only knows how he was treated and how long he had been roaming the countryside?
Great story Paulie! Alfie is a cool looking dog! I totally agree about going out for walks with our dogs. Nothing better than putting on your headphones, listening to good music and heading out for a good walk.

HILARIOUS! He's got that look like SERIOUSLY? WTF will you humans think of next???
Lost a good friend this morning as my oldest dog Reilly had to be put to sleep.
Reilly was 15 and he lived a good and long life despite the fact that he was nearly deaf and blind in the last year or so. I was always amazed at how well he could still get around except for when my wife would fuck with him by rearranging the furniture in our house?!
I had noticed he was not eating as well and was barely moving around at all over the last couple of days and yesterday he didn't eat at all and I began to brace myself that it was his time to go. So, my wife and I took him into the vet this morning with the thought that he would be put to sleep. The hardest thing for me was not knowing if this was the end although my gut was telling me it was. The vet told us he felt a large mass around his abdomen and he told us he would recommend putting him down so at least we had the reassurance that we were doing the right thing.
He was my first dog I had on my own and he's been a part of our family his entire life. He was a great dog and I will miss the hell out of him!
So sorry ILB - I know the feeling. It is great that he had such a good long life.
so sorry ILB. the worst part of being a pet owner, but it's the responsible and humane thing to do. I've done it before and unfortunately, our older dog who is 11 isn't doing so well. we're hopeful that he's going to be ok, but he's showing similar symptoms of our dog who had cancer in her snout that we had to put down in 2000. we just adopted another dog, so our 2 year old dog has a companion to play with in case we are close to the end.
here is our new 4 month old pup, Samson:

We said goodbye to Daisy (above) on November 26th. She was 14 and lived a happy long life. I really couldn't have wanted more from a dog. We got Daisy on the return trip from our honeymoon in 2000. her health began to decline in the past year and she took a real down turn over the past month where she was shaky on her feet and couldn't control her bladder. We took her to the vet to say goodbye; it was pretty tough but she was such a shell of her former self. We buried her in our backyard and that spot now has a special new character. Sparky misses her and has been moping a bit around the house.

Sorry to hear that, man.
ILB, so sorry to hear about your dog. Its amazing how much your pets become an integral part of your life. As my first dog gets closer to double digits in age and grayer and grayer, I have to just keep reminding myself to just enjoy his company because who knows when I may be facing the decision you just made.
I'm so sorry about your loss, ILB. Losing a pet is so painful. Sometimes people don't understand, but we pet peeps do. 15 is a good, long life, and I am sure your family has lots of good memories with him.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Definitely have lots of good memories we will cherish. But it's still tough because it's like we lost a member of our family today.
Beats, sorry to hear about your older dog. Hope he pulls through. Samson's a cutie though.
Sorry to hear about Daisy as well Tracy. We're planning on burying Reilly in our backyard also. We told our kids last night that we would be taking Reilly to the doctor and he probably wouldn't be coming home and they took it pretty hard as they were crying when they went to bed and kept wanting us to come up to their rooms. They all 3 got to say their goodbyes to him this morning and they wanted to know if we would be having a 'funeral' for him which I assured them we would for the family.
But like you said Tracy, he too was a shell of himself as we couldn't even get him to wag his happy tail anymore.
And I didn't see your post above ILB's, Tracy. So sorry for your loss, too.
Man so sorry to hear that guys.
yeah Tracy, so sorry. doesn't matter if it's 9, 10, 14 years or whatever, it doesn't make it easier.
