So the Champions League and inter-league games are going on, and I was just curious if there were any fans of the game. DB, Mark, I know you're Englishmen.... Jaimoe, K, Canadians like soccer, right?
(sorry if I'm wrong about your homeland)
And if you don't like soccer, here's a little something to draw and help keep your attention:

I've caught some of the Champions League games this week. I hate Chelsea and Man U though.
Soccer is a huge recreational sport in Canada, but our National Men's senior team has been a disgrace, even though two of the bettter younger Canadian born players in the world refused to play for Team Canada: that fucker Owen Hargreaves and Jonathan de Guzman elected to play for other countries internationally (England and The Netherlands respectively). Toronto FC is a major success story in the MLS.
Soccer is massively popular in Toronto (and in Montreal, Vancouver and parts of Alberta) since Toronto has huge ethnic populations. I live in Greektown, so you can imagine the insanity when the Greeks play. The neighbourhood was shut-down when the Greeks won the European Championship four years ago. Soccer is on every weekend in bars and restaurants in Little Italy, Greektown, three Chinatowns, Little Korea, Little Portugal, Little India etc...

That second part is great to hear. I wish it's popularity would rise in the U.S like it has there. Yes, Chelsea and Man. U, blah(and though I don't like him, I can't deny Ronaldo his sickness).
Inter and Barcelona losing were both disappointing, but I was glad to see Liverpool get another win. Is there a Premier, Liga, Bundesliga, etc.. team that you call your own?
I just don't feel like this sport gets much respect.
I saw Zidane play live in a French international game. He was almost hypnotic.
I'm a huge football fan, but only follow England and my own team, the mighty Ipswich Town FC. I'll also watch local non-league football (either Bury Town or Cambridge City) whenever possible.
My company has a corporate box at Man U. I don't go, as it's just too far removed from anything that makes the game enjoyable for me (other than the free booze!).

I forgot to mention that Montreal and Vancouver are huge USL teams and will be in the MLS sooner than later. BTW, the Montreal Impact are into the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League (best of the MLS, Canada, Latin American and the Caribbean). Not bad for the only team from the US or Canada. All the MLS teams (a superior league) are out. Montreal beat the Toronto FC and USL's Vancouver Whitecaps in a mini round-robin to qualify and haven't lost since.
I don't cheer for the big teams. I normally will pull for any teams that have a Canadian on them (Tottenham, Everton) or an underdog, like Celtic or the Rangers.
My roommate is a big Tottenham fan. Besides being a fan of and traveling to see the Chicago Fire, I enjoy watching Bayern play a good bit.
Yeah, I had heard about those teams joining by 2010 at the latest. I also heard that Barcelona is trying to set up an MLS team in Florida.
Who do they play next in the CONCACAF?
My home team of Reading got relegated last season, they're currently 3rd in the Championship League (one down from the Premiership)
My brother-in-law is a Nottingham Forrest fan so we'll be seeing them play Norwich City when I'm home in a couple of weeks.

That's not bad, I saw where they beat Blackpool yesterday. Can't remember who's up next for them.
That's great. Darnet can be fun to watch when he's on. Oh how I wish I could travel over there and see a REAL game of soccer played.

I got it wrong: the Impact are in the quarters and play Mexico's Club Santos Laguna. It looks like Houston Dynamo are in the quarters too and play Atlante FC of Mexico. I like the Dynamo because their goalie Pat Onstad and their best player, Dwayne De Rosario are Canadian National Team members.

Mulrooney and De Rosario are two veterans, I've always enjoyed their play. I had heard talks about De Rosario going on loan a few months ago. Not sure as to where, but I think it was somewhere in La Liga.
Wow, this is better then the thread I started ages ago to ask about futball since I'm an ignorant American when it comes to these things and really want to be a fan

Thanks for starting this thread. I am a junkie of all things sports but have only been getting into international soccer aside from the World Cup over the past 4 years.
As for Inter...I feel like they've been going somewhat downhill over the past couple of years as I feel that Juve has...in general just the quality of Serie A.
I didn't see the Barca match so I have to look up how that went down.
It's hard to find a team as a foreign outsider in the EPL. My roomie from my sophomore year in college was a dirty Scouser and an Everton fan and rocked a Duncan Ferguson jersey every fuckin' day.
Having said that, we get so many of the Big 4 matches on FSC...if I had to choose.. I'll take the Gunners everytime just for their style of play.
I expected Man City to be much more competitive this year but I hear they will be more than active in the transfer window upcoming.
Besides...we all know that the best player in the world is Clint Dempsey
Will truly be getting into the Champions league once the knockout stages begin.

Inter have their days, and Ibrahimovic is always fun to watch(one of the best strikers in the game). But yeah in Serie A, even AC Milan isn't doing as well. Juve just looks terrible sometimes.
Adebayor is sooo sick! Aside from that, eh. ;)
For Man. City, have you heard anything with Robinho and transer? He's on my fantasy team and I need him to stay good team to produce for me. ;D
And finally, Dempsey huh? I actually chuckled a little when I read that. They're pretty far behind, but of course I like him; best in the world though? We both know that's KAKA!!!!
What happened to the great Fenerbahce?
Does anyone else believe that the Champions' League group draws are rigged. Perhaps I'm wrong because I'm relatively new to this but Bayern Munich seems to always be placed in a weaker group.
Now I know they have had a history of success in the Champions' League but they have not necessarily been juggernauts of late. Knowing how much revenue they pull in, is that why they manage to avoid groupings with some of the top clubs.
Merely hypothesizing. Must look it up

There's always talk of De Rosario playing for Toronto FC since he's from Scarborough (massive suburb in Toronto's east end). If and when Toronto gets rid of BMO Field's field-turf, look for Dwayne to make a move.

I think the MLS also should encourage all new stadiums to be built in the downtown. Most are in the 'burbs. Toronto's is in a perfect location right on the waterfront.

Even though it's not downtown, the Crew stadium is adjacent to OSU campus, which helps. Columbus is the perfect city but it lacks water, that's my only complaint about it. I'd love to have a downtown waterfront--they have the Blue Jackets arena, the minor league baseball team, etc; :(

I'm a fan of Rick Nash, Adam Foote and like the Blue Jackets.
Toronto's huge waterfront is disjointed - some good things, but the fight to revitalize it has been ongoing for 20 years. Still, things are happening slowly and surely (I'm being optimistic).

Why would you hate McBride? He's my hometown soccer hero (St. Louis).
I love soccer and look forward to getting an MLS team in St. Louis. I do wish I knew more about how the European league structures worked and so forth. The key in any sport, in my opinion, is having someone to root for!

It's a CONCACAF Canada vs US competition thing more than anything.
Are you guys in the US/Canada or the rest of the world hearing anything about the German team Hoffenheim?
I don't really follow the German teams too much. Only when the Champions League starts to roll.
Well, Hoffenheim is a town with a population of ~3000. It's their first season in the "1. Bundesliga" and they're on the first rank. Sure they get "some" finanacial support by Dietmar Hopp but they're playing a great football and they follow a great concept and they also have success in their youth section.
I heard that they started broadcasting their matches on foreign television. Is that true?

I saw their game against Bayern last week on Fox Soccer Channel. They play quick up front and had chances to win. I didn't realize this was their first year in Bundesliga, though.

ABC shows the odd game. Horrid announcers. I do watch a lot of Toronto FC games, but they are done by the CBC announcers, who are generally really good.

Anyone see the Fulham/Chelsea match? WOW!!!
Do the Reds have what it takes to hold on?
Man U. looked dominant against Chelsea. Don't know if anyone saw the corner that Rooney and Giggs took that was disallowed although it was really a valid trick play.
Beckham looked very mediocre in his debut in AC Milan but I guess that was to be expected.
Kaka to Man. City? Ronaldo to Milan?
Hoffenheim still in 1st :D
So many stories, so few fans :-[

ESPN or ESPN2 should have games on every week, at least on their international feeds. Canada carries English Premier games on Saturday and Sunday on two national sports networks and the Toronto area carries some Serie A games live on the weekends, usually in both Italian and English.
Of course the cable broadcaster of soccer is Setanta Sports, which you have to pay extra for no matter where you live.

Hey where are you located? I'm out in the east coast and pay 5 bucks a month for comcast's sports package on cable. This includes NFL network, NBA TV, a host of other channels plus the all important Fox Soccer Channel. If you don't get a specific soccer channel, it might be difficult for you to get much other than Champions League matches on ESPN (which are the best), MLS, and some EPL reruns on your local sports channel.
I hope that you can find a channel that plays some soccer. :)
Either way, Champions league matches begin again in February and those can be seen on regular cable.

St Louis area. You would think it would be on here as this is kind of a soccer town.
Can't believe Man U.'s clean sheet streak. Wow! Gotta give 'em credit and I can't stand them >:(
Champions League Fixtures in 2 weeks!
Inter v. Man U.
Real Madrid v. Liverpool
:o
My new favorite place to go for lunch, (Welsh pup with killer steak and cheese, delicious beverages on tap including a good 5 day IPA), shows matches all the time. Liverpool was playing someone the other day. I was nice, sandwhich, pint, large flat panal HD tv.

Glad you found a place for "soccer." In B'more, I've only found one really good place called Slainte that writes it's televised matchups on a chalkboard out front. Best pint of Guinness and B'more and also the most overpriced place and their flat screens a a wee bit on the small side. Oh well, great atmosphere though.
Liverpool has played some amazing matches over the past week from their wins over Chelsea and Portsmouth in the last minutes to their loss to Everton in the FA Cup! Definitely my favorite team out of the EPL Big 4
Hope some peoples get to watch US Mexico tonight. What a rivalry!! :o
Man did the US dominate Mexico though it could have easily have been a draw. I don't know if the US played that well or Mexico played that poorly.
1st step to Johannesburg
Where is Purvis? Haven't seen him in ages and he started this thread. Hmmmm
Anyways, I'll be DVRing the Man U. v. Inter match today. Incredible matchups and yes they will be televised on ESPN or 2 and evening on Classic.
Classic 1st leg matchup between the Serie A leaders and the EPL leaders at the San Siro!!!!!!!
And another thread that no one cares about ;)
So I'm getting tickets for AC Milan v. Chelsea at M&T Bank Stadium and was wondering if anyone was going to make the jaunt over to B'more to see this awesome matchup.

Reading lose to Birmingham...see you in the playoffs :(
Still wish they showed matches here in St Louis other then the Welsh pub I go to for lunch every so often.
Whenever I make it the UK, going to a match will be high on the list of things I HAVE to do.

Really looking forward to this game, should be a good one. Still, Barca is going to win :)
Manchester vs Arsenal was pretty good too, even though Arsenal was dominated by ManU.

DVR baby! Hopefully you'll be able to catch the final which will be Man U. v. whoever wins this.

Truly an impressive performance by Man. U. I didn't get to see the match but to do what they did at the Emirates was special. Ronaldo's 1st goal was almost as awesome as his 35 yarder against Porto :o
As for Chelsea v. Barca, both are in good form though what Barca did to Madrid (6-2) was ridiculous. I'm hearing that Thierry Henry might not play. Not that it matters when ya got Eto'o, Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Ridiculous. That said, it is at Stamford Bridge.
I've got no idea but it will be a good one for sure
Alright, that was insane! The red card was undeserved by the Barca player and at least one hand ball had to be called against them.
That said, what a strike by Iniesta! :o :o :o

Yes, Barca was lucky, but I think they are a better opponent for ManU, don't think Chelsea can keep up with them right now.

;D, not that there's anything wrong with that!
FA Cup and Champions League finals coming up!!!
Go Barca and Everton [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
Bumbeli? Ya' there?
It is the lesser of 2 evils for me but I will be at the pub rooting for Barca today. It sucks that Iniesta may not play and 4 defenders including the 2 center backs for them are out. Not good against United. Looks like they may have to score some goals.
On the bright side, unlike last year's painful final, with Barca instead of Chelsea, we're likely to see some scoring.
Will be in an Irish Pub full of Man. U. clowns. Can't wait to see them cry and make up petty excuses. This is Messi's chance to show he is close to on par with Ronaldo.
With Ronaldo's 41 and 35 yarders against Porto and Arsenal, I think anyone who still questions whether he is the best player in the world is INSANE!
FA Cup Final - GO EVERTON!!

Twas great to witness the somber exits from the pubs of all the Man. U fans. For one day, they looked mediocre to downright bad. I don't know if Man. U. had the right plan to attack, particularly after going down early but the Barca midfield really controlled the game and the back line made plays when they needed to.
It could have easily been 4-0 if Henry beats Van der Saar from point blank and Xavi converts that beautiful free kick. What a season for Barca!
USA - Confederations Cup
Anyone? Bueller?
The US sneaking into the semifinals might be the craziest, improbable feat I've seen in sports. Really.
For those that may have been paying attention, this crappy, underperforming team needed make up 6 goals in goal differential to surpass both Italy and Egypt and somehow finish in their group second only to Brazil.
So what happens, Brazil lambastes Italy 3-0 and US beats Egypt 3-0
Un Be Lieve A Ble :o :o :o
Off to face the #1 team in the world on Wednesday.
Any given Wednesday right?

I wish I could join in. No DVR and when matches are on, I'm not around a tv.
QuoteI wish I could join in. No DVR and when matches are on, I'm not around a tv.
I wish you saw it MJK. Quite possibly one of the biggest wins in AMerican soccer history.
Breaks Spain's 15 match winning streak, 35 match unbeaten streak, and the first non European team to beat them since Argentina in 1999.
ALso the 1st time a US team has reached a final of a FIFA cup since they started sometime around 1917 I believe.
Yes Spain outplayed them and outshot them, but the US played a very inspired game and actually had a strong game plan that worked.
It was the best I've seen this group play.
On to the final :D

there were no tvs here either!! TAKE THAT! it happens so rarely, i love it when our USA boys beat the Euros!! it's just annoying that everyone has to wear their stanky sweaty jerseys around here on 'footy' day. they stink up the subway!! I wish I could have seen it...
Anyone else watch the US Brazil match. I can't complain. It was a valiant effort by an overmatched squad. What a brilliant 1st half the US played.
Congrats to the U.S. soccer team
Chelsea v. AC Milan on Friday. Per usual all the local sports talking heads were bashing soccer and the silliness of an exhibition match in Baltimore and the price of the tickets in this economy. Well, it sold out early at more than 72,000 tickets.
I never understood the American propensity to spew vitriol at something they do not embrace. You don't have to like it but don't have to share unjustified hate.
The game is on Friday but scored the VIP seats that allow us to attend the practice session of the two teams at field level on Thursday. Cannot wait!
Anyone else attending?
It would be nice to go.
I have never understood the blatent disregard for Soccer/Futbol by the American sprots media. As nutso as we are for sports (in many many cases too nutso) this boogles the mind. Just because 2 roided up freaks are not crashing into each other ala Football, wrasslin, UFC, NHL, etc etc etc., it's not a fun/valid sport? That and Nascar is popular? It's so fucking boring watching cars drive in a circle. Grand Prix is better to watch at least.
I did notice Fox Sports Net has a soccer only channel and it's an option in my area...finally. I wish it was an free option. Honestly I do not need 5 Nickalodian channels and the 3 Lifetime channels I have. Hell I can do without the Speed channel and the almost dozen news channels.

Fox Soccer Channel is what I've had for the last 3 years. It is a very solid channel that shows live Serie A and EPL matches during the season plus replays during the week along with soccer news and various random international competitions.
Unfortunately, I just switched from cable to Directv and I now get MLBtv and NFLnetwork without having to order the sports package so I'm not sure I want to drop the extra cash just for FSN but I miss it.
I'm sure I'll break once the EPL season begins again.
Well put on the media's take on Soccer. What has been a slowly building cult/fringe sport rooted in suburban America, I think the sport is on the brink of really making it here. The increasing popularity of the national team, the MLS and greater exposure to foreign leagues via internet and specialized cable channels only builds the unavoidable wave.
So freaking happy. Get to watch Man U v Wigan on ESPN 2 this morning. The one announcer is killing me. I seriously cannot understand a fucking word he's saying through his Scottish accent. It's beyond thick.

Awesome man! Man U. for the 1st time in a few years is not one of the favorites and may not even finish in the top 4 this year with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and even Man City fielding more talented teams.
With Villa possibly having a good team, it's great to see deeper parity at the top of the EPL.

I hate Man U. They're too much the f'n Yankee's. At least the first half was good. I wish I could see more matches. I'll have to keep an eye out if they are going to do more Saturday morning matches. It was nice to sit with my boy and watch.
Chelsea v. Burnley tomorrow morning on ESPN 2. A friend of mine, who is also becoming a Footy, and I are thinking of joining the local Day Pinters group. Nothing like a Guinness on a Sunday morning with your eggs and bacon while watching.

That would be cool if you joined. I'm familiar with the local club at the Irish pub here and it is one passionate, tight nit community.
What could be better than drinking Guinness, eating blood sausage and watching 'footy' in the heart of America :)
It's so great now that ESPN is carrying EPL games. Now we get at least 4 or 5 live games a week. I love it!
It hurts because I'm an Everton fan and they are off to a horrible start.

I wish we got more here. Just the one weekend Match of The Week and some stuff during the week when I cannot see them. This week I believe the club is hitting the local Welsh place. I'm really tempted to make it as they have great rarebit. Cheese, toast, fatty meat, mothers milk...I mean Guinness. It really is good.

After a rough night of whiskey and having to work at 10am today, I managed to catch most of the 2nd half where Chelsea turned it on. I give Burnley credit. They have played well overall as a newly promoted club who already has a win over Man U. under its belt. That said, Chelsea early on look to be the strongest and deepest club. I guess they just turned it on the in 2nd.

Yeah, after Chelsea's first goal, Burnley deflated. With that said, I was very impressed with Burnley's keeper Jenson. The goals Chelsea got were not easy ones.
The Man U./Man City derby was one for the ages. I only got to see the 1st half but am about to watch the second. Thank god I recorded it.
Of course the wrong team won but wow! I'm hoping the recorded footage has the Man City player punching the Man U. fan.

Nahh, they only showed in Setanta Sports which I only got for free for a week as a Directv promo.
It was incredible and though Man U outplayed Man City in the 2nd half, I feel as if the ref screwed Man City by letting them play into the 96th minute of injury time, allowing Michael Owen to net the winner.
This is the 3rd time I'm seen Man U. get extended injury time and pull off a winner. It makes me sick. >:(
Didier Drogba again showed why he is one of the best strikers in the world. For all his unbearable diving and playacting (I hate it), those were 2 beautiful assists against the Reds. Chelsea look like the early team to beat this season.
Been a diehard Man United fan since I was eleven, and judging from the time I spend playing Football Manager each day,I guess I'm kind of obsessed with it. :D
As an addition,I must say I was pretty disappointed after seeing Arsenal win this week. :P Poor Birmingham..
I don't know if anyone saw the game but I was lucky enough to attend the U.S./Costa Rica WC qualification match. With the emotions running high after the terrible Charlie Davies accident, that 2nd half comeback was amazing and to be part of that energy at RFK was AWESOME!
Not often one gets to see a 95th minute equalizer to prevent another team from qualifying
Not happy i missed Liverpool over Man U. I hate that we get 1 match a week and it's at some ungodly hour in the morning on Saturday's. Come on ESPN, do we really need 5+ hours of NCCA pre game coverage? Since I'm no longer having to get up at 4:30, I'm missing matches. :(

Yeah, I caught some of the replay on Fox Soccer Channel. A huge, much needed win for the Reds. Anything to see Man U. lose is a joy to me.

Exactly.
Well the US has to be excited about their World Cup Draw. It couldn't have gone any better except for maybe England loving their draw even more.
What better way to open than against England! A ways away but I gotta think that if we can walk away with a point against England, we should move on
Happy that I'm actually able to enjoy a footie today. Fulham v A Villa. Neither are the greatest teams, but it's nice to have a match at a normal morning time and I can actually sit and watch.

Sweet! Good to see someone in this thread still. The U.S. team is starting to worry me. Davies is already out for the World Cup and now Dempsey is hurt. If he is out for sure, they are in trouble before it even begins.
The 2 goals I saw from AV were outstanding.
Is this where the World Cup banter starts? Roll on Saturday 12 June...
BTW, you might enjoy this story regarding the guy who threw a coin at Bellamy during the City/United match:
Rivals target Man Utd supporter accused of Craig Bellamy coin attack
FOOTBALL'S coming home for the Manchester United fan accused of throwing a coin at Man City striker Craig Bellamy.
In fact, it's coming right to his front door.
For Red Devils supporter Adam Teese is feeling the flipside of his alleged coin attack - with furious City fans bombarding his house with pranks.
Adam's name and address were released by police after the season ticket holder was charged with throwing a coin at Bellamy during the Manchester derby last week.
And within 24 hours, the enraged blue half of Manchester had ordered him £150-worth of pizzas, a skip, rat exterminators and TWO PROSTITUTES.
The barrage of jokes didn't end there either. City supporters also:
* Ordered him a bronze statue of WINSTON CHURCHILL.
* Sent a salesman to estimate the cost of an INDOOR SWIMMING POOL.
* Booked him a performance by SQUEAKY THE CLOWN.
Details of the pranks began surfacing on supporters' forums. Despite later being removed by Man City website Blue Moon, they were still picked up by other clubs.
This resulted in yet more misery for 26-year-old Adam, who lives with his parents. As well as a bouncy castle, a call from an Avon representative, a breakdown truck and a puppet show, he was also treated to a 1957 Pink Cadillac complete with Elvis-style chauffeur.
But dad Joseph, 55, raged: "We've had no end of trouble - I've had to take time off work to deal with it."
Teese will appear before Trafford Magistrates on February 9 accused of "throwing a missile on to the pitch" during the Carling Cup Semi- Final second leg at Old Trafford.
Mum Deborah insists her son is innocent, adding: "I was sat next to him and he did not throw anything. We actually had to duck when a bottle was thrown over us!"
Last night a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are investigating the incidents."

I tell ya. That Argentinian team is real strong but they really struggled to qualify. That may bode well for them, who knows. I think I'm going to have to start a separate World Cup thread soon. The anticipation is killing me. It is my single favorite sporting event in the world, well above Super Bowls, World Series, Olympics, Sunday Grand Slam Golf, Stanley Cup and March Madness.

The story gets better as you unveil more little facts ;D I was in Germany during the last World Cup and there were groups of Brazilian fans of at least 50 - 100 in airports in both Amsterdam and Munich, banging away at a number of drums and chanting. In an AIRPORT, in a WAITING AREA! It was loud
So my absolute love of the World Cup was the deciding factor in not going to Bonnaroo this year, even when it is announced that the Jacket are playing. June 12th is the U.S.' first game and I can't miss it.
Yeah, the Brazilians are nuts. if anyone wanted to take over Brazil by getting rid of the middle class, I think they were all in Disney when I was there. I suspect it will be the same come june. Hmmmm time to contemplate a revolution.

I very VERY happy to see the Mancs lose.
QuoteI very VERY happy to see the Mancs lose.
Yup. I'm not a hater of Man. U. so much as a hater of Smug Alex Ferguson and all the American followers. Hey, there are other EPL teams out there peoples!
It's really great to see Donovan succeed at the highest level of European soccer. He had failed so many times that I am very surprised at the overall impact he has had on the Everton squad. Though he wasn't all that effective against Man U., he has really helped make the Everton attack more dynamic over the past month.

I just wish the asshats at Fox Sport realized there are more EPL teams then just Man U and Chelsea. Seems every week it's one of their matches. Granted I don't want to necessarily see the teams on the bottom but some variety would be nice. Kind of hard for someone to form an opinion on a club when you never get to see them.

I can't believe I'm saying this because I'm a Man U (EDIT) disliker, but as of now, I agree with the masses that Rooney is footballer of the year. I always respected his all around game but the striking ability he has shown in key game after game w/o Ronaldo has been amazing. He truly is a well rounded, multi-talented player.
That said, we know the English will still choke in the World Cup. That goes w/o saying.

He's definitely out but I think it's a blessing for the English team. Beckham is such a one trick pony in his old age. He remains effective in set pieces, corners and long balls. That said, he is a defensive liability, lacks pace and creativity with the ball, and seems to limit the possibilities of what is a very well rounded and surprisingly athletic English team.
I guess we'll see but I felt like Capello felt compelled to play Beckham no matter his match fitness.
Anyone going to watch the Champions League final? Go Bayern Munchen! It sucks that Ribery is out though.
Just found this thread. Seems to be a 2 man show. Any room in here for a chick? Not sayin who I support, its pretty obvious ;D.
Got the camps league final on & muller just missed a sitter @ start of 2nd half. Damn! C' Mon bayern!
Ribery got a raw deal with the 3-game suspension, but nothing UEFA/FIFA does surprises me. I'm cheering for Bayern, but only by default, plus Ribery is my favourite player.
This game is killing me. Admittedly, Inter are playing their style to perfection and Milito has finished with class on his only two chances. That said, Howard Webb has been giving all the calls to Inter and his blatant miss of a terrible handball in the box in the 1st half by Maikon was unforgivable and a PK would have changed the game completely. The absence of Ribery has been so noticeable as Inter has been bracketing Robben on the right wing and left Altintop (Ribery's replacement) with room, not fearing his attacking ability.
Ughhhhhh

thanks ruckus! i will definitely be checking out the world cup thread as well. funny how most of my friends don't share my love of the game AND mmj is something that hasn't quite caught their attention either.
that final - ugh is right. bayern definitely missed ribery - that guy is insane & could've torn inter apart. i'm not sure inter could have dealt with both him and robben @ the same time. oh well. robben was more or less marked out of the match, although he did have a nice effort saved, we really didn't get to see him play in his true style. bayern seemed to have an advantage in posession but didn't take their chances, what few they had. and yes, howard webb missed a blatant handball in the box. i usually like him as a ref but this wasn't his best match. as much as i don't want to, i've got to say that inter deserved the win. huge credit to milito for scoring 2 fantastic goals, the second of which was a real beauty. and then, inter did what all morinho lead teams do and parked the fucking bus after that.
bummer. but now that the champs league final is out of the way (i really didn't have much vested interest in either team) i cannot wait for the world cup!!!
Managed to snag tix for tha Man City v. Inter match here in B'more on July 31st. If its anywhere near the successthe Milan v. Chelsea exhibition was here, it should be a blast!

I definitely am looking forward to it though I haven't sorted out many of the roster changes yet.
The Inter/Man City match was a disappointment. Unfortunately, unlike last year with Chelsea/AC Milan where it was a crazy atmosphere and sold out, this year's was rather tame with the stadium only half sold out. It's not gonna help B'more's attempt to be a World Cup site in the future.
The game was essentially over once Patrick Viera got straight red carded for elbowing Materazzi. Interesting huh? The same Viera that was Zidane's teammate in '06 in the World Cup and the same Materazzi that flopped on Zidane's head butt. Going in, we knew Inter was the better side but man down didn't help.
It was still great to be able to see an international match within walking distance from my place but I fear we won't be getting another one after this year's turnout. :-/
it's too bad there wasn't more interest in that milan/man city match. if it had been fucking man utd, i'm sure the stadium would've been packed or thereabouts. i don't think man city has a large fan base here in the states. possibly only in manchester & then some scattered pockets of folks who have relocated. the gallagher bros of oasis fame are city supporters; as is ricky hatton. but i think that's it.
too bad is wasn't a good match. i tuned in for a little while but didn't watch the whole thing. it would've been better actually being there. so excellent job on getting out there to show people what's up - "the game is in US" (i assume you've signed the petition?)
the transfer rumors drive me nuts. as a liverpool supporter, i was extra worried when the manager left. i thought there'd be a mass exodus of all our "international stars". honestly, after last season i'm surprised torres is staying. but thank God!
as for everton, i don't think they did too much yet. they signed jermaine beckford (striker) on a free. to my knowledge, everton usually don't do too much big money spending, because they don't have big money to spend. and even though i should hate them on principle, i have always had respect for the way they play. tim cahill is a menace!!!
you probably already have it bookmarked, but in case not - you should check out the bbc sport website. they are pretty quick w/ the updates. and when the season gets underway, check out the live text section. it can be hilarious.
let's go reds!!!
So pissed I missed this. Everton!! Toffees score 2 in stoppage time to draw Man U 3-3. :o
I've yet to watch a match this season. Once my race paces, I'll be able to catch them Saturday mornings.
I usually don't start watching matches until the college football season is over. I usually just catch Super Sunday Plus on Fox Soccer Channel to get my weekly recap.
I guess Sir Alex is a bit pissed after his squad squandered that two goal lead and let yet another valuable two points slip away at Goodison.
That is now twice this season that ManU has let crucial road wins slip away as they let in a late goal at Fulham for a draw after Nani missed a PK that would have sealed the 3 points for United... :-/
i'm definitely annoyed that i didn't watch the everton v. utd match. would've loved to see them throw that one away! is it just me or does SAF only give post game interviews when they win? ::)
they almost did it again yesterday! i just kept thinking "all it takes is 1 goal & the utd. defense will unravel". and it did!
*gripe warning* o'shea should've been sent off for that foul on torres. he was the last defender & it was a goal scoring opportunity. torres is one fast mofo & i think he'd have beaten van der saar in that foot race. and then, fucking berbatov for the hat trick. WAH!!! gut-wrenching. but man does that guy have skills!
fine, utd did outplay liverpool in the 1st half. but my beloved reds picked it up in the 2nd half. i think given the performances of both teams over the 90+ minutes, a draw would've been the fair result.
Hey Liz...did ya see the pre T5 matchup on Sunday the 17th? I hope it doesn't dampen any vibes ;D ;) If we pull it off, the 1st red headed slut is on me

I have yet to get a match in this season. Now that I do not have to get up so god awful early to run on Saturdays I can start watching. I had a chance this past Saturday, but it was ManU. ugh

this fixture is falling in the midst of a truly epic week. magical even (mine starts w/ the Ramble on the 16th :)). undampened good vibes will be intact, no matter what! it's been a terrible start to the season for both the red & blue halves of the city. fucking hell...we both deserve a GD drink.
but the league as a whole is off to a pretty crazy start. good to hear you'll be able to start tuning in, mjk. there's some good football being played so far. some of it coming from teams you'd not expect. west brom in 6th place, on 11 pts? what the???

I've been slow to catch on this season as usual because I have to wait til baseball season ends or else it's just too many damn sports to follow. Ridiculous. That is insane! :o
I will be thinking of a fancy blue cocktail for my indulgence that week. Thank you very much 8-)

to be fair - who doesn't love a red headed slut? anyway...
i did see ky's post about pique & i'm really not surprised. he's really freakin good! phenominal footwork, especially for a big guy. the name "twinkle toes" comes to mind when i watch him play. ALSO, man city will continue to be linked w/ all the big name players throughout their quest to
buy the prem title. bastards >:(
so the big day is sunday: merseyside derby! always a scrappy event & w/ both teams in desperate need of the 3 points, i think this one's gonna be a real cracker! crunching tackles, a flurry of yellow cards & maybe even a sending-off or 2. it won't be pretty, just pretty crazy.
anyway, i hope you've figured out your fancy blue cocktail because my reds are gonna kick the stuffing out of your toffees ;)

Pique is good but no player is worth that on transfer fees alone (I know its becoming the norm), especially a central defender. I know it's always a talking point in the states about the economic structure of each of our sports but we have nothing to bitch about when it comes to top level European soccer. It's ridiculous.

i never really paid too much attn to how much pro-athletes get paid before i started following the prem. and via that, learning the craziness of how much money these big time european teams will pay their players. it IS ridiculous!
p.s. i still don't get the structure of MLS w/ the DPs and all.

Sorry ynwa but woohooooo!!!!! The perfect birthday weekend is allowed to have one little hiccup right. ;)
It wasn't televised as far as I know. I just watched Blackpool v Man City which was actually a very good match.
you know what, i really wasn't that upset. i mean, seriously, everton came out fired up & fully deserved the win. 2 really sweet goals by the boys pictured above. i secretly love tim cahill. arteta, not so much, but what a strike! talk about hitting the sweet spot :o
liverpool, even though they played much better in the 2nd half, lacked any kind of creativity. torres had no support until the last, what, 15/20 mins? hodgson got it wrong, he picked a very defensive starting 11 & didn't make the right changes til it was last gasp time. poor.
so, red headed sluts later then?
edit: oh yeah - this is a pretty sweet little link for games that are not televised OVER HERE...
http://atdhe.net/watchtv.html
With the conclusion of the Super Bowl my attention turns to soccer until March Madness and Spring Training.
What a win by Wolverhampton this weekend! Wish I actually saw it. I wish I could watch the Man U./Man City match this Saturday!
Quite a bit has been happening in the EPL since this thread was last active. I think Chelsea were in firm control atop the tables and have since gone into quite a tailspin and now sit 10 points adrift of ManU in 4th place! 8)
Speaking of nice wins, how about Liverpool going to Stamford Bridge and ruining Torres' debut with the Blues! ;D I don't often pull for the Reds, but on this occasion I was all about Liverpool winning that match! :) It looks like King Kenny was a great hire and the new ownership at Liverpool seem to be all about breating life back into that struggling franchise. The EPL is a better league with a competitve Liverpool.
Lastly, I'm kind of glad ManU lost to Wolves over the weekend. Now they can forget about the burden of trying to extend that unbelievable unbeaten run they were on and focus on bringing home another title! And as much as that loss stung, it will all be forgotten with a win vs. City in the Manchester Derby on Saturday!
isn't it funny how we sports fans always (try to) put a good spin on things when our team loses? :P ;) i've certainly been doing my fair share of that the past few seasons. :'(
things certainly have changed quite a bit. chelsea had been looking unstoppable for a while. what the hell happened? not that i'm upset or anything. since liverpoool were clearly out of the running very early on, i've been pulling for arsenal to win the league. but after throwing away a 4-0 lead against newcastle i have serious doubts that they have what it takes. honestly, i'll take anyone other than man utd, chelsea or city.
we are getting into the meat of the season now. btw - rob, how convenient of you to focus your attention on the epl at this time ;D good to have ya back! anyway, i'm hoping that it will be a tight race until the very end. i'm all for the underdogs taking points off the bigger teams & no one team running away with it. keeps things interesting. it's pretty dull when the title has been secured by & the trophy presented to the league winners before the last game is played.
do i ever want man utd to win anything? hell no! and watching wolves beat them was glorious. sorry iLB, you are a much better person than yours truly! i respect them but just cannot bring myself to actually support them, or wish them well. but, despite their loss on the weekend, they do look like the team most likely to pull it out. i certainly don't want city to win it either so i'm hoping for a thrilling 3-3 draw this saturday. berba for another gd hat trick, yaya toure w/ a brace & an evans og in the dying moments. y'all heard it here 1st! 8)
actually, maybe it won't be so bad if man utd wins the title this season. at least then my beloved reds won't have that whole most titles thing hanging over their heads anymore. being tied w/ utd on that has really only been weighing us down ::) see, i'm doing it again :-\
so, ok, i was totally wrong about my man utd vs city prediction. i didn't get to see the whole thing, just highlights. 2 very sweet goals. but rooney's... HOLY SMOKES! :o it was beautiful! goal of the season?

I agree that when you factor everything in surrounding that goal, it has to be very high on the list for GOTY. I mean, you had the whole Manchester Derby thing, the fact that both squads are fighting for points to stay at or near the top of the tables. And then there's the fact that Wayne Rooney has been struggling to find the back of the net this season and despite Rooney's struggles, was still given the nod to start by Sir Alex over Berbatov who is only the leading goal scorer in the EPL this seaon. What a goal indeed!
BTW, if this goal happens to jump start Rooney's season, I would have to say that won't bode well for those teams chasing United.
Anyone going to watch the Champs League clash between Arsenal and Barca on Wednesday? I really don't see how the Gunners are going to pull of the upset in this one. I'm just hoping for a quality match.
ummm. quality match fo shizzle!
didn't get to watch it in real time but thank the lawd for FSC & their highlights. also was able to catch it on replay from the start of the 2nd half when i got home from work. it did not disappoint, not in the slightest! jack wilshire had a fantastic game, as did arsenal's, what, 3rd string keeper? also, cannot dismiss the russian messi's (arshavin) goal.
i should call upon this match in future when trying to explain soccer to folks that don't understand the beauty of a sport that rewards the fact that scoring is not assumed, yet earned, thru hard work, discipline & sometimes... a little bit of luck
(http://videogum.com/img/thumbnails/posts/brett_gelman.jpg)
I'd say that match lived up to the hype! Robin van Persie is having quite a run of late. How did he score at that almost impossible angle?
I will say, I feel Arsenal were fortunate to come away with the win yesterday as Messi missed on several opportunities he usually finishes.
This tie is far from over as I think Barca has the potential to possibly win going away in their second leg match at Camp Nou. But I would love to see Arsenal stick it to Messi and company.

Man U. fan caring about either side. Pfft ::)
I am about to watch the highlights but I'm really bummed I wasn't able to DVR the match.
I did however watch the entire replay of the Manchester Derby and United surely deserved the win. Watching Rooney's goal in context, from multiple angles in 55 inch HD glory was chill inducing even for me who could care less about either team AND had already seen it. One thing that bothered me a bit was how the announcers in calling United's 1st goal, attributed almost all its brilliance to Nani. Admittedly it was a fine 1st touch on the dead run but the pass from Giggs was perfection and was the more impressive aspect of that goal in my mind. Either way, a beautiful goal to watch.

I don't even remember responding to this which is probably a good thing because I celebrated it all over again on Sunday. I guess the the Truckers show did a number on me Saturday night. I had DVRd the match planning on watching it on Sunday. Well the DVR recording extension still wasn't long enough. Boy was I pissed when I watched for almost a hundred minutes and it got cut off. I ended up seeing it on highlights. YOWZA!
Timmy Howard!!! What can you say? He is the reason we may still have something to show for this season here in the FA cup.
Fellaini was offsides on the play in question as well.

Haha. Ya know, I alllllmost put spoiler warning above it, just in case. I have a buddy who would probably shank me for something like that. ;D
been wantin' to say "congrats!" to ya ruckus. what a sweet win
leighton baines' free kick was glorious(sung in falsetto)!!! gotta question cech's postioning, i mean, where else was a left-footer gonna put that? regardless, when it came down to penalties i had a feeling everton was gonna pull it off. big tim howard did come up big. and how about johnny heittinga's contributionzzzz??? absolutely fantastic pk & then the ole psych out tactics when he bumped into ashley cole on cole's walk up to the spot.
is it strange that a liverpool fan wanted, soooo badly, for everton to win? i even sat up straight and did the "YEEEAAAHHH!" fist shake ;D
Hey thanks rooting for us ynwa. ;D I guess it's like a UNC fan rooting for Wake Forest to beat Duke. I see what you're saying with Cech but Arteta was standing over the ball too so...either way, it just froze him. It was a perfect strike.
I love this one from some dude in the crowd.
Leighton Baines 119th Minute Freekick Vs Chelsea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahuZeSyw3No#)
haha, that's an awesome vid! someone was psyched ;D. dunno, from that spot on the pitch, it definitely favored a left footer. and baines sure has a sweet one of them. what a goal, the drama of the timing etc. and the crowd going berzerk.... goosebumps.
don' follow college hoops so your analogy is over my head. only reason i know it's b-ball is cuz i was a duke "fan" when in high shool. cuz christian latner was a fox. i have an uneducated guess, but i'll google around to figure it out.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ANYONE! did you hear about gattuso's 3 match ban? i think that's in add. of the yellow card accum.1 match ban. what a hot- head, for chrissakes. any predictions on who will win? i hope it's either arsenal or barca, more so arsenal tho. chelsea looked good today, actually, maybe it was more that copenhagen was poor. anelka looked good & there seemed to be some good linking play between the front 3. i do think once torres gets his 1st for chelsea, he could turn the corner. and im afraid yet excited of what he may do from playing w/ & learning from the likes of drogba, anelka & malouda. man utd will always be strong in this competition. and especially if rooney has turned the corner on his season. milan can be dangerous, ibra & cassano seem to have a good understanding. real madrid? not sure if they won today yet....

Ohhh Baby!!!! Here we go! I'll be at work all day and I hope I can avoid results until tomorrow night. I agree with you Beer after having seen the highlights/replay that the Gunners were fortunate to come away with a win. Having conceded one away goal though, I'm thinking they are going to need at least two tomorrow. Sounds like Van Persie and Fabregas will be a go right now and no Puyol and Pique means the potential for the shootout we crave!

Dude! Their first goal was glorious! Every single pass and movement on that counter was brilliant. Gotta reluctantly give it up.
Considering the form that Argentina was in coming into the friendly with the US, Americans should be ecstatic with the 1-1 draw. Unfortunately, the fortuitous result and Howard's magnificent keeping were the only two positives I could find in an otherwise sloppily played match by the US. They were lucky they didn't concede 3 in the 1st half alone.
The switch to Agudela over Jones was clearly beneficial from a formation perspective but the announcers were a little too ecstatic over the very mediocre performance by agudela except for him bangin in the rebound equalizer.
Timmy Chandler is funny looking :-X
Don't forget, Agudela is only 18! 8)
Tim Howard is freaking awesome too BTW!

You don't have to remind me of Howard. ;D I'm biased as I watch him play more frequently than other keepers but his in the upper echelon of keepers now. In fact I can't think of 5 I'd rather have.
That was my first time seeing Agudela play and he seems to have the killer instinct and lacks any fear of failure. On the other hand, there was once great hype about another 18 year old striker who actually played the entire game on Saturday though you wouldn't have known it by watching. I think it may be time the Altidore experiment ends. He continues to show me nothing so in that regard, it's great that we have an Agudela in development.
I've also been done with Gooch for a few years now. I just don't see what everyone else sees in him. I think his performance against Argentina should have been the capper that perhaps we need to seriously consider other options in central defense.

Tim Howard is the only reason that game on Saturday was not 5-1. He's a freaking maniac. It seemed that on every pass, the USA team stood there, waiting for the ball to come to them. No aggression whatsoever. They need to get their shit together because it was a sad display. The Agudelo goal in the 2nd half made up for it.

I did see the match toretm. Chelsea actually looked alright but blew a great opportunity when Ramirez missed that open header on the cross from Drogba. Wonderful save by Van der Saar on the header from the otherwise non-existent Torres late in the match as well. Good goal by United. Giggs CONTINUES to play like he's not 80 years old :o
If I had my way, they should both be knocked out for no other reason than just being Man U. and Chelsea :P

That was nuts! I had to leave right at the end of regulation. When I was checking the scores later, I thought for sure something was wrong. Good stuff!
Manu steamrolls the EPL this year. Would love to see the double but I just can't see Barca losing with that team. Ridiculous squad
I like the new look Liverpool - Suarez is an animal...once he clicks there, they will be tough. Too bad Gerrard is out
Off season this year will be interesting....more and more rumors that Chelsea blows up their squad and goes younger....Neymar is going to make some serious cheddar this off-season....good player, but someone is going to overpay
Hopefully the Toffees can win out and cause a ruckus. Slow starts crippled the Merseyside squads but its nice to Everton again vying for a Europa League spot but again on the outside looking in for the CL.
Haven't seent that Neymar kid play but I've heard good things.
I wouldn't give the CL to Barca just yet
Just set my DVR! WHY DID I have no clue that FX carries Champions League matches. Lesser of two evils dictates that I root for Barca. I can't stand Jose Mourinho. Either way, knowing it'll be one of the Spanish giants and Man U saddens me.
And of course I'll root for Barca cuz it's Ky's team.
It's been quiet in here. Anyone else watch the CL final? Clearly the better team won, but it was really exciting for a moment when Rooney equalized. What a pass by Xavi (per usual) off the outside boot to Pedro for the 1st goal. What was Man U. doing giving Messi that much space? Not often you see Van Der Saar caught leaning that badly.
While great for ratings, it's almost not fun when you have the world's best 11 players on one team, or so it feels.

The Rooney goal was pretty sweet and I'd rather have an exciting match any day over Barca just winning and winning. It does take the fun out of the game.
And as brilliant as Messi is at scoring, Xavi is a blast to watch....

I wonder??? I mean, but WTF? Has that ever happened in the history of history? I can't even imagine that even being a possiblitly with the ball being punched out that far. If it's during regulation, sure the Keep's still on his toes, but PK's? That's just insane!
In other news, how about Freddy Adu tonight?! Aside from the BEAUTIFUL ball he played out to Donavon that set up the winning goal, he turned in some quality minutes.
Yeah Jon, you just can't blame the keeper on that one. Hell, the coaches and players probably had time to yell at him to get back in goal. It could have been the greatest save of all time if he turned around, sprinted and dove to save it with his fingertips, just pushing it astray. ;D
Am I the only one watching the women's World Cup? Totally psyched about the 18 year old Miyabochi that the Japanese have the the talking heads have been calling the closest thing to the female Messi. She is young, tiny and has remarkable dribbling skills with the ball close to her body ala Messi along with excellent acceleration. Immediately changed the complexion of the game when she came on in the second half against New Zealand. I flew on a flight from Frankfurt to DC on Lufthansa on Sunday and the pilots were giving periodic Women's World Cup highlights throughout the flight. :) ;D
Oh yeah, and that Alex Morgan on the US :o :o

And besides the Sweden/Australia match (congrats SaraBB!), the other three matches this weekend ranged anywhere from excellent (Eng/Fra) to simply stunning (Japan/Ger and US/Brazil).
I'd the say in the 1st three, the best team on the pitch won.
As for the US, their playing was so uninspired after the own goal until the sendoff that I was feeling bad for Brazil that they were outplaying the US so badly yet were down a goal. Who knew it took being man down before the US figured out how to link passes together. Despite Julie Foudy's outrageous comment declaring the US the fittest team in the World Cup (as if there was a scientific measure for that), the difference really seemed to be the fatigue of the Brazilian side. I just wonder if Foudy watched the Japanese and Germans leave it out on the field, still sprinting unrelentingly into the 120th minute and beyond.
What a cross from Rapinoe, so exacting, and the perfect finish it deserved. Had the refereeing drama not occurred, the victory would not have had half the impact that it had. I can't rank this above or below US/Algeria from last year. Simply amazing and was again reminded why return reward for watching live sports can be exponentially greater than the 2 hours investment put in. For those that gutted it out to the end...
Disappointing and offputting was the histrionics of Marta. She made Cristiano Ronaldo look like the model of class and sportsmanship.
A dream matchup - US/Japan
While I'll be happy either way, I will be pulling for Japan. What another great day of World Cup it was yesterday. Pretty remarkable how much the technical skill of the women's game has advanced exponentially over the last decade.

I was wondering who you would be pulling for. I didn't want to post anything in here yesterday that might have spoiled it for you. Damn! That was thoughtful of you. I worked til 8 but denied myself all smartphone access and got through watching both before midnight. Not to sound like a broken record or sappy but the meaning of this performance on the collective Japanese spirit has been remarkable from my understanding. Regardless of the outcome, what a sensational, uplifting run it has been for the Japanese side. They really do play a beautiful passing game and have overcome ridiculous size disadvantages in each match along the way.
You're right about the US. Though they were getting owned in the midfield for much of the match, I never felt like they would lose. I don't know why. That was such an entertaining game. France plays a gorgeous game as well. Who knows what happens if Bompastor doesn't hit the crossbar on that beautiful short corner set piece the French had. Also, Pia Sundhage made the change that Foudy had recommended in the Brazil match but didn't do this time around when she put Cheney in the middle, Rapinoe wide, and pulled Lloyd. Pretty brilliant. Of course we know that putting Morgan in is always the right move.
What a chokejob
The rules of soccer are why it will never be truly embraced in the US like it is in the rest of the world, especially their rules concerning OT and PK's to end World Cup Finals?!
First of all, why is there a need to play TWO overtime periods regardless of the score at the end of the first 15 minutes of extra time? I much preferred things when it was a golden goal to end the match. It just makes NO sense to me how one team scores in OT what should be a game ending score, yet because of screwy international rules, the US not only had to finish off the first extra time period, but also another 15 minutes of extra time to kill off so that Japan could have the chance to tie the game and thus, force us to have to endure the most disappointing way to settle such a meaningful tournament?! It is beyond me how the powers that be in FIFA cannot figure out that this is a HORRIBLE way to end a soccer match, especially one with the significance that a World Cup final brings, be it men or women?! Oh well. In the end, the US put themselves in that situation by not capitalizing on the many many opportunities they had to put that match to bed. I really was quite surprised to see how much the US pretty much outplayed Japan for most of that match given how Japan was playing coming into that finals match. It was definitely some quality football to watch even though it's ending left a lot to be desired.
Now that my rant is out of the way, I would like to say congrats to the ladies from Japan on an outstanding tournament. I'm disappointed that the US didn't finish the job, but if they were going to lose to any team in this World Cup it might as well be Japan. I was happy to see the US get over on probably 2 of my least favorite teams in the tournament in Brazil and France. And while it would have been great to see them bring home the trophy, Japan was a deserving winner and I am happy for them and their country as a whole. Hopefully this win can help in some small way in the huge healing process from the tragedy that happened just a few short months ago.
Agreed on all P-Funk....what were they vs Japan, 22-0-3, I believe??? So not only do they lose to them for the first time, but they do so by blowing a 1 goal lead twice, and probably putting on the most horrific PK performance ever (Id assume). IMO, what really killed them was not scoring when they had all those opps in the first 15-20 minutes. How can such a talented team kick ball after ball into the damn mezzanine?! :o
Based on your argument about the overtime ILB, the US wouldn't have beaten Brazil.
It was a great match and though Japan wasn't the better side yesterday for large chunks of time, they were the better side throughout the tournament. They did win the possession battle 53% to 47% but as ILB said, I was surprised at how well the US controlled in the midfield and created chance after chance.
It should be pointed out that a terrible offside call against Japan prevented what looked to be a breakaway one on one with the keeper. The announcers acknowledged it for a seconds and never mentioned it again. My American rooting friends acknowledged as much that it prevented a very likely goal.
I'm just disgusted by so much of what I've heard on American news and sports talk radio. Penalty kicks and OT's are dumb but they loved it against Brazil. The better team didn't win yet conveniently forget the 1st 65 minutes against Brazil and most of the match against France. It's soccer. It happened. The tournament had so much drama I actually enjoyed it more than the last men's World Cup.
In the end, I am not a fan of penalty kicks but it makes for great drama. I'd be OK I think with a golden goal but unless they change substitution rules, it's no good having players running for 135 minutes in heat and humidity still on a 0-0 score. I don't know what the solution is.

The guys on sports talk here in Nashville prefaced their critque of the game with: I don't know a lot about soccer.
Soooo, let me give my opinion about something I know very little about. How American is that? :-\
Everyone complaining about the US women "choking" got me to thinking of how America loves a winner and how we are basically a nation of losers, strictly speaking from a sports analogy front. Every member of the NBA who is not a Maverick is a loser; every member of the NFL who is not a member of the Packers is a loser, and so on and so on and so on. And just about every American is not the best at much of anything, yet we "demand" perfection from a group of women in a sport that we collectively don't understand.
I have never played 1 second of organized soccer, however, Alex Morgan is my hero.

And just about every American is not the best at much of anything, yet we "demand" perfection from a group of women in a sport that we collectively don't understand.
I have never played 1 second of organized soccer, however, Alex Morgan is my hero.
1st, you are right about Alex Morgan. It was a wonder why Sundhage stuck with Amy Rodriguez so stubbornly and all we could surmise was that she had some type of strong loyalty to her that was not easily broken. We agreed that Sundhage's moves to put Cheney up front instead of Rodriguez and starting Rapinoe made sense but it left them with less options for subs in the 2nd half outside of Morgan who sure did her job. She's a hell of a soccer player too. ;) My friend was upset when they announced the starting lineups that Sauerbrunn was pulled once Buehler served her one game suspension. Who knows what would have happened had she not started but Buehler did unfortunately blunder the clearance in the box that led to the 1st Japanese equalizer.
As for your other point, I couldn't agree with you more. It's not even the "if you're not 1st you're last" mentality. It's more expectation of always being the best, the petulance when they don't succeed, and a general lack of appreciation for effort and class. This American women's team was all class and effort. It just didn't happen for them but they were still inspiring and a joy to watch.
When I think about my roots, I was born a citizen of a country of 1.2 billion people and I can't remember ever rooting for an Indian who had an opportunity at a gold medal in the summer Olympics. Of course we make it up in Spelling Bees but... ;) Similarly, I would have been happy with any successful run by the Japanese. This was amazing! They didn't have to win. They did the Japanese proud either way and the Japanese people would not have had the reaction that many here have had they lost.
Maybe I'm in the minority here but I think women's soccer won big time here regardless of who won and all the while, both the American and Japanese sides were all class. :dankk2:

I too was disappointed in Buehler's inclusion back into the starting line-up on Sunday. I thought Buehler struggled for the entire tournament on defense. While here red card in that Brazil match was iffy at best, she always seemed out of position or a step behind in every match she played.
And not only did Buehler botch that clearance that led to Japan's first equalizer, it was Buehler who was out of position allowing Sawa to get open for the flick for her equalizer in OT.
I also am agreed on how unfair the media is being on the US women calling them chokers. Yes, they failed to hold late leads twice in the match and their PK display in that shootout was pretty bad. But it's not like Japan are a bunch of hacks?! Japan is the 4th ranked team in the world?! Instead of criticizing the Americans for not finishing, how about giving them a little credit for even getting to their first WC Final since they won in 1999?!

Not like Ive been following every media outlet, but its seemed to me to be pretty split. That said, choking is choking. Of course the team is talented and should be commended for their performance and how far they went. And yes, there is a difference in choking if they didnt even make it out of pool play vs how they twice gave up late leads and looked like middle schoolers in the PK of the finals, but to some degree, they choked in that game.
I don't think I can even move my leg like this, much less kick a ball for a goal; incredible!

Pretty brilliant! It looks like even she couldn't quite believe she was going to make it but she's got instincts around the net for sure. With that and her pace, I look forward to see here start for the national team in the near future.

we all know this what you meant
What a visible difference in attitude and style by the Americans against Mexico last night under Klinsmann. Whether that translates to more international wins in the long run is another question but it was great to see players having fun and a coach showing enthusiasm on the sideline. A breath of fresh air compared to the stoicism of Bradley.
Bocanegra got lucky not getting red carded and then the US took some bad non calls late.

I 100% agree. I'm sure there will be some hiccups along the way, but I'm really happy with this move.
On another note, I knew Landon was fast, but that break away he had on one of the no calls you speak of - that burst was impressive.
Speaking of futbol, anyone catch the ESPN 30 for 30 movie about the Colombian soccer team and Pablo Escobar? I only caught part of it, but what I saw looked like it had potential.

Nice seeing CFL games on the site.
Should be a dandy at Azteca Stadium tonight! Can't wait! It's so funny to see ESPN crank up the hype machine. Looks like soccer viewership in the states continues to grow (thankfully) despite the relentless pathetic and played out jokes about soccer by domestic sports talking heads.

Should be an interesting match. I think the win on Friday was huge for the US coming into this game. They are now sitting on 3 points and just a draw would be a great result for the Americans. El Tri, on the other hand, is coming off of a horrible road draw where they blew a 2-0 lead and also a horrible (and lucky) draw at the Axteca vs. Jamaica so they will have all of the pressure to get a result tonight!
The US should be coming into this match loose, basically playing with house money and also having the confidence they can get a result at the Azteca based on their breakthrough win in their last visit!

Thanks for the reminder! I was thinking it was tomorrow.
Should be a nice, cordial match in a friendly environment between two teams with nothing but love for each other.
Anyone watch the match last night? I wouldn't normally qualify a 0-0 draw as a great result, but when that 0-0 draw comes at Azteca, where the US has only managed one point ever in their history of playing WC qualifiers there, I think you can qualify that as a great result for the US!
I was kind of annoyed during the broadcast that they had to have former Venezuealan international Alejandro Moreno in the booth with Taylor Twelman and Ian Drake. Alejandro seemed totally pro-Mexico calling for a penalty on Michael Bradley where it looked like he pushed Chicarito in the box but replay looked like Chicarito did a bit of embellishing to try to draw the penalty. You could tell Twellman was getting a bit tired of his pro Mexico analysis as well.
I will say I think Mexico had a legitimate complaint for a penalty when Edu tackled Aquino, but it was tough to tell whether or not Edu actually got ball. It was a tough call either way and I'm glad the ref opted on the side of the US!
Too bad the US had to blow that match in Honduras or they'd be at the top of the tables right now. But I'll take where they're at after playing 2 of their first 3 qualifiers on the road...
I agree the end result was great. Not a very entertaining game to watch, though. I thought Mexico looked awful. That could be in part to the US game plan. We did a good job of disrupting just about everything they did, IMO. Our D showed some potential, while our offense was non-existent save for last 20 or so of the first half. We definitely caught a break with the no call on Edu, but that's part of the game and we're on the wrong side of that call more times than not.
I didn't have too much of a problem with Moreno's commentating. As many Mexicans and Mexican fans we have in the states, ESPN isn't only broadcasting to us Americans.
All of that being said, I have no expectations of our team at all in Brazil. I know there is a little time left to start putting things together, but I have not seen too much to get excited about.

For some, yes. But not all Mexicans are fluent in Spanish. Take Ruckus for example... dude's as Mexican as the day is long. Not fluent in Spanish, though (i think). Queue up Moreno.
I get what you're saying and I do agree to an extent. When I watch our National team, I want the the commentators to be on our side. However, I don't want them to be so biased that they aren't calling things fairly. I kind of liked having both perspectives.
I enjoyed the commentary in the US match. I always find US commentators too pro US in order to stoke interest at the expense of objective analysis. Yes the Edu tackle should have been a penalty and we can never complain about not getting calls in Azteca ever again.
But seriously, Matthew Lowton?!

Anybody see Luis Suarez biting incident yesterday in the Liverpool/Chelsea match?
http://youtu.be/g7w6yHoTO-w (http://youtu.be/g7w6yHoTO-w)
As if that wasn't crazy enough, this wasn't even the first time Suarez has bitten someone in a match? He was banned 7 games for doing this when he played for Ajax?! This dude is nothing but a racist nut job and I hope the FA has the stones to step up and make sure he never plays in the EPL again. There's no place for this type of player in the EPL if you ask me!
There's no place for it anywhere. Who cares right? He just hates black people and bites people for recreation. Insanity that some are calling his 10 match ban harsh. There is precedent and a year ban would be more fitting given his history.
I am loving the Bundesliga move to the elite. It was only a matter of time given the economic strength and size of Germany. More and more top players are willing to leave England and Spain and Italy and German clubs are more eager to sign non German talent as well.
Edit: I should add that both German sides have homegrown talent, particularly Borussia Dortmund.
Congrats on your league title Beer ::)I don't see Everton making the top 4 barring a miracle. In the meanwhile go Bayern Munchen!
Ruckus, have you been able to recover yet from Moyes leaving your beloved Toffees for the evil empire that is ManU?

You are a bad human being beer. I love Moyes and I want to wish him the best but of course I will cheer for Red Devil failure. I was crushed but we all knew it was coming. Not that it would have happened but the only thing worse would have been Moyes trolling the sidelines of Anfield.
In better news, I grabbed quarterfinal tix for the Gold Cup at M&T Bank. So long as the US finishes 1 or 2 in their group, we'll see them.
Only 50 bucks for decent seats for both quarterfinals combined

I can't imagine what a dagger that must be for Evertonians to see Moyes now sitting in the chair of Sir Alex. I'm excited to see what Moyes can do with basically unlimited recourses at ManU. To think what he was able to accomplish at Everton with a limited budget at best, it's scary to think of the success he could have at ManU!
Anywho, nice to have another Scot roaming the sidelines at Old Trafford! I've always liked Moyes and I was hoping he'd be the man to succeed Fergussen and not the Special One...
Any idea of who replaces Moyes? They're going to have big shoes to fill to try and duplicate the success Moyes brought to the Toffees.

Very cool! Hope the US is there playing!
The US is playing a friendly with Belgium in Cleveland but it's on the day we're leaving for vacation so I'll be missing it. I'd LOVE to go to the WC qualifier down in C'bus in September. Had tix to go the last time they played a Cup qualifier there but I had to bail at the last minute. I just remember watching it and how pissed I was to be missing watching the US take down El Tri...
Hope you get tix to the WC qualifier Beer. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2010 WC qualification clincher against Costa Rica at RFK which may have been of the best live sports moments of my life.
So I was at the Gold Cup quarterfinal here against El Salvador and it was a great time. We had lower upper deck right on the 50 so the sight lines for the entire field were perfect. Once Honduras and El Salvador qualified, the event sold out. I'd say of the 70000 attendees, about 20% were American, 50% were Salvadoran, 25% were Honduran, and 5% other (not many Costa Ricans around here) but you'd think it was skewed more because Honduran and Salvadoran jerseys looked so much alike.
As for the team, I'm just trying not to read too much into this unprecedented winning streak. However tempering the excitement has been tough when they are showing offensive creativity that I've never seen before and they are getting healthy. They consistently used space wisely with mechanical precision and created chance after chance. They probably left another 2 or 3 goals out there as well. Donovan looked world class on Sunday and Klinsman is going to find a clever way to incorporate him onto the #1 national side without disrupting the chemistry that Dempsey and Altidore have finally developed.
As for the 1st team, I like Besler and Gonzalez enough in the middle and Fabian Johnson has been somewhat of a revelation for me. Bradley has been a monster in the middle and I wonder if Holden will be able to capture a spot to move up as well. Lots to figure out between now and next summer but I sure like where this is headed.
Did anyone catch that friendly between the US and Bosnia the other day?
All I can say is Jozy Altidore is playing like a man possessed! I was beginning to wonder if he would ever show me anything for the US National Team and boy has he proven me wrong! He scored a hat trick in the 2nd half for the US after they were down 2-0 at the break in the US's come from behind 4-3 win over the 13th ranked team in the world on their turf! It was also the first time the US had a come from behind win on European soil and kept intact their 12 game win streak which is currently the longest streak in the world!
