Title: Best UK TV Comedy of all time?
Post by: dragonboy on Jan 16, 2009, 07:50 PM
Best UK TV Comedy of all time (non-animated/animated/sitcom or otherwise all on the same list)

Make a list (max 10) Your number 1 gets 10points, 2 gets 9 etc

Need to think carefully about this...

I've never seen a full episode of Simon Pegg's Spaced, but if I did, I bet it would make my list. Some didn't make my list because I haven't seen them. I grew up watching On The Buses, but it didn't make the cut. Same with Sorry and the Two Ronnies.

Anyway,

1. Fawlty Towers - best comedy of all time
2. Black Adder II, III (and I like IV too)
3. Father Ted
4. The Office
5. Not the Nine O'Clock News
6. Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em
7. Alas Smith and Jones
8. The League of Gentlemen
9. The Young Ones
10. Extras

I gotta say though dragonboy, I doubt many Americans will pipe up on this thread. Canada and the Commenwealth countries get almost all British TV shows - not including talk shows.

Not to worry, we shall remain a small, select group  ;)

Thanks for the list! I'll post mine after work...

Many Canucks would include The Trailer Park Boys and Kids in the Hall as some of the best TV comedies, but they don't really fall under the sitcom label. And almost nothing beats The Honeymooners, but it wasn't a sitcom - it was a segment on The Jackie Gleason Show.

Fawlty Towers-----come on this is a given
Flying Circus if it counts
Extras
Coupling
Little Britain
The Office

Apparently I need to see Spaced, Young Ones and Blackadder. I do love Mr Bean. Does that count?

I haven't seen enough of Are You Being Served to say if I truly like it or not. I remember 1 episode with the old lady who always talks about her pussy.......cat was talking about her pussy......cat and the truckdriver that was involved in the conversation crashed.

Black Adder I isn't very funny, but give it a try. At least its historical and it has a good cast, epecially Rowan Atkinson and the great Brian Blessed (as his father Richard the Lionheart). Black Adder II, III and IV are all great, featuring Atkinson as Adder and a young Hugh Laurie and a few more famous Brits.

Add Father Ted on there too. Three Irish priests banished to an island, living together. One is a brain-dead drunk, one is almost retarded and Ted, well he's a closeted swinger. Hilarious stuff.

Father Jack, the drunk, can only say a few words since his brain is fried:
"Drink, arse, girls, gob-shite!"

Ted is smart, but he was banished to the island, Craggy Island, because he was accused of stealing money from the church, although he said the "money was just resting in my account."

Father Ted was one of the most popular BBC shows ever.

It's a fact that if and when you ever meet an Irishman or woman, whenever you agree with them on something, say the following and they will always get it: "Ah, you're right there, Ted."

Sorry Jaimoe.....your list is totally discredited by the fact that it has Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em on it!!! You must be of a reasonable age because you can remember that dross.

Do you really think that beats the greatest of all time.....Porridge? Or Dad's Army, Only Fools & Horses, Steptoe & Son to name a few?

I'll put it down to your illness. Come on......
Title: Re: Best UK TV Comedy of all time?

I have to admit. I really don't understand the amount of people that rate Little Britain.

David Walliams must wake up every day and pinch himself to see if its all a dream. He has to be the most overrated comic actor I have ever seen.....and lucky that he has Matt Lucas to cover for him.

In terms of sketch shows Little Britain doesn't even come close to The Fast Show, Not The Nine O'Clock News, The Two Ronnies, A Bit Of Fry & Laurie, Harry Enfield etc. etc.

Am I alone or does anyone agree with me?

Discredit be damned.

I'm not British and I didn't get to see ALL the shows from across the pond, including the one's you mentioned. Some Mother's will always hold a special place in my heart since I did watch it as a lad with my late father and I love Frank Spencer, especially the episode where he "almost" completed the army obstacle course.

this is a long shot, but i thought i'd try: i met a few brits in new orleans and they were telling me about a british comedian (not sasha baron cohen) who would pose as an interviewer for the bbc then catch celebrities off guard.  the one i recall them telling me about is him asking steve martin something like "how does it feel to not be funny anymore?".  sounded like he'd be right up my alley.

any guesses?

Yup. I was a big fan of Pegg and Frost before SotD. I have a friend who is a bit of a Brit slut so he always passes on the best stuff he comes across. Spaced was amongst some of that stuff. Then SotD came out and it took them to a new level.

Another awesome comedy is Man Stroke Woman with Nick Frost

Hopefully his his part in Star Trek will get him some better roles. How to Lose Friends & Alienate People was disappointing & I've heard mostly negative things about The Big Nothing & Run Fatboy.

I just checked & it comes out on DVD here in June (again, how behind is Japan?!! Burn After Reading just opened in theaters!) Big Nothing is already out so I've added them both to my rental list.

Did you see that he's currently filming Spielberg's Tintin movie?

Yeah Japan sucks for movies! Other Asians countries get them (movies) at the same time as the US, I guess because they're readily available on pirate DVDs @ the same time but Japan doesn't have a pirate movie 'industry' & the movies do better if one or some of the actors/director come over to promote the film so they have to fit it into their schedule, which is sometimes months later.
In good news we do get the big3 for this summer (Star Trek, Transformers & T:Salvation) @ about the same time.

Don't worry, I have read your disclaimer RE:Big Nothing & will not hold you responsible if I don't rate it  ;)

Has anyone seen 2 Pints of Lager and A Pack of Crisps? I watched the first episode and thought it was funny, juveline yes, but funny. Unfortunatly, I have to get it through bit torrent since it's only on region 2 DVD and I do not have a region free player. Features Rudi (Smithy's sister) from Gavin & Stacey.

Someone was just talking about The League Of Gentlemen in my department. Still one of the best openings to any black comedy ever:

I've been watching clips of Room 101. That show is pretty funny, and tackles tough issues!

QuoteHey DB, Gavin and Stacey is finally coming to the US on DVD so I can watch it properly instead off a website. Makes me think of one of my other favs, Coupling. Did you ever watch it? Thoughts?
Haven't seen Coupling but I really love Gavin & Stacy! Everyone should watch it when it comes to US TV.

Will check out Coupling now...
Jeff is one of the funniest damn characters ever. Seasons 1-3 are fantastic. 4 slips but is still funny

... About pissed myself when Bryn started singing James Blunt

YES!  absolutely hilarious!!

i haven't really followed many brit. comedy series, but i've seen a few episodes of the following which i found to be pretty funny:

fawlty towers
father ted
shameless

The episode where Jeff has the hots for the women on the train and the whole leg "issue" is one of the funniest episodes of any tv show ever. Nudity buffer, sock gap, giggle loop. Jeff is my idol.

i saw them a while ago & was probably slightly intoxicated, so my memory's a bit fuzzy.  but i know i saw that episode.  i have to add this to my netflix.

jeff reminds me of charlie brown.  shit just doesn't work out for him, and it's funny but i always feel bad for him  ;D

a few months before i was moving, the landlord changed to FiOs.  wasn't worth it to get my place wired so all i had was network tv.  so i found justin.tv & watched stuff there.  watched a lot of a british comedy channel.  some good stuff there.  but a lot of red dwarf which i don't really care for  :-X
