I just bought a PS3 bundle with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I've never played a Metal Gear game before, but I think I have the original game from the PS1 laying around somewhere.
If anyone here could help me out... Does one need to have played the entire series to "get it"? Will the plot be totally lost on a noob like myself?
Well they definitely progress from one to the next. You could read through the plot synopses on wikipedia if you'd like to get going on this one, but I can't help but think it'd be a whole lot mroe fun to beat the original tactical espionage shooter and then it's sequel, get to the freaking glory of Snakeater, and then play 4. I've only played about the first 5 minutes of Snakeater on someone else's PS2, but damn I wanted to get into that one so bad.
I remember back in the day when Metal Gear Solid came out... I played the demo at Wal-Mart every single freakin' time I went shopping. I loved the cardboard box gag!
When I bought my PS2, Metal Gear Solid for PS1 was the FIRST game I bought... and lo' and behold my PS2 has a skipping issue with blue discs (common problem with the old PS2 platform)... Maybe I'll finally be able to play the game on my PS3? Although the PS3 is backwards compatible to PS1 and PS2 games, the official website says that it Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 but with noticeable issues...
Thankfully, the PS3 appears to have no trouble playing the old Star Wars titles...

I also added Grand Theft Auto IV to my cart. I'm looking forward to the next chapter of GTA. San Andreas was okay, but my character being a fiddyshit copycat was a huge turn off. The whole Russian immigrant take should be really awesome.
Well, I didn't have the patience to dig up the ol' PS1/2 games, so I went ahead and played Metal Gear IV: Sons of the Patriots. Most of the plot was totally lost one me - but the whole game played out like a movie. There were actually cinematic scenes woven flawlessly into the gameplay... you take over, throw punches or do a specific task, then the cinematic takes over. The HUD lets you know you're about to be in control. Amazing execution.
There's the 3rd person, you can go 1st person. There's driving, riding, and all kinds of different game modes to keep things spicy. All of it works good, which is rare - usually when a shooter game tries to incorporate anything else, it fails miserably.
I've already played through the first few acts all over again. I'm anal about wanting ALL of the guns and items and secret masks and crap. I'll never be able to get the infamous stealth bandanna, I'm afraid.
:'(
Anywho, this has got to be one of the best games on the PS3 right now. I should be getting Grand Theft Auto IV in the mail in a day or two - that'll be mind blowing, I'm sure.
Anyone else around here own a PS3? Got any suggestions for a game?

I have read the Wikipedia description of LittleBigPlanet four times, and I still have no idea what it's about... but damnit the sackboys and sackgirs are cute and the level designs are awesome.

"LittleBigPlanet is a community based game that gives players the ability to play, create and share what they build with other games on the PlayStation Network."
Again, I don't understand it... but it just looks awesome.

I've been playing Battlefield Bad Company (Gold Edition) and I love it. There are a few challening battles and there is cool multiplayer/online capability as well.
P.S.--I love my 80g PS 3 and the look of Blu Rays on my TV!
I've got
Resistance: Fall of Man, now that it's a $30 Greatest Hits title, so that's my current game. Pretty fun shooter so far. Nothing beats using an old pump action shotgun on a Russian speaking alien.
I might pick up
Assassin's Creed, next... I definitely need to check out
Bad Company, too.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed comes out next month - I'm gonna have to pre-order that one.
QuoteP.S.--I love my 80g PS 3 and the look of Blu Rays on my TV!
Yeah, the Metal Gear bundle is badass!
We don't have an HD television, so I haven't bought any Bluray movies, yet. The TV isn't a clunker, or anything, but I just doubt I will see a difference on it.
Hey! Want a MMJ wallpaper for your PS3? I made one with some custom artwork. Set the wallpaper brightness down in the theme settings and it works pretty nice... Let me know, I'll e-mail it.
I picked up Resistance the same day I got Bad Company I need to start playing.....and YES PLEASE the PS 3 MMJ wallpaper! Thanks!
With Madden '09 now on the market, and I know im getting it 1 way or the other, im def thinking bout finally upgrading. I dont see the PS3 going down in $$$ anytime soon, and I got school loan money (i swear, its the devil), so I may finally take the plunge
im hooked on civilization revolution youll like it if you liked themostbadassawesomecool game that was ages of empires 2
Loving me some Rock Band 2, right now. You can create characters to be stand-ins on stage - I've tried to create MMJ, but it's easier to do caricatures of Jimi Hendrix and Elvis Presley.

It seems like Jacket songs would be perfect for RB. OBH on drums? Sounds exciting to me!
One cool feature is that you can load up a song from the drive, and "freestyle" the drums to it... no points for being awesome, but there's at least ONE way to rock out to MMJ on Rock Band.
My Blu rays are so beautiful they take my breath away when I watch them.
Civ Rev and Grid were awesome along with of course Madden, NHL and Tiger.
That said, what can we do to push the band and record execs to get a track or two as DLC on Rock Band 2. I got 220 tracks and no MMJ. :'(
I mean come on...OBH, Evelyn, Lay Low, O are solid possibilities.
This must happen!!!! :D
Highly Suspicious would be awesome on Rock Band.

I picked up LittleBigPlanet this weekend - Meg and I basically kept my PS3 running for two days straight. There really isn't a storyline, and some of the levels are insanely, annoyingly difficult, and sometimes the sackboy and sackgirl doesn't respond exactly right to the controls being mashed... but for the most part it was just great fun for the two of us.
Even without a friend, I spent three or four hours building my own level - I created a giant shark and a replica of the ORCA, two tanks, a bridge, and a giant bird that flaps its wings and talks.
Today they're releasing a new Metal Gear Solid level pack with a paintball mod. Awesome.

yeah, little big planet is a lot of fun. it's really cool that you can make your own levels and customize your character. it does suck, though, that you can't save your game. so if you mess up 75% of the way through a hellaciously difficult level, you have to do it all over again. that's the only weak thing about the game. other than that, it's awesome.

I don't know where people get off saying stuff like this. It's called a video game and it is meant to be fun playing with friends.
You don't tell people playing Tiger Woods to go take golf lessons or someone playing Call of Duty to go join the marines.
What better way is there to involve 12 people in one room having good time without having to be competent at something that many find difficult?
Hmmmm I'm thinking about getting a PS3 via Amazon.co.uk. Due to the exchange rate (Euro-Pound) I'd save about 100 Euro!
Man I was a douche in my last post on this thread. My apologies and I'm glad they still let me modify it.
Valkyria Chronicles is the &*^%. Love it :D
If you like tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics then add on hand drawn animation and 3rd person shooter elements, well there you have it. A great game and challenging.
For those hallucinogenically predisposed, I highly recommend Flower, the $10 downloadable game.
Awesome!!! (under the right conditions of course)
Agreed, Flower is beautiful.
Before I start posting in this thread, is it universally accept that the PS3 beat the 360 yet?
360 had the better games in the beginning, but used their ammo too quickly. Look at the consistency of quality PS3 games lately. Killzone2 online multiplayer is one of the greatest things ever. Just gotta get that online interface and friend list more user-friendly.
I've never played a 360. I'm happy 'nuff with my PS3.
Uncharted 2 is a masterpiece! Absolutely love it!
DJ Hero also a good time though I think I'm done spinning Holla Back Girl mixes..
Some classics
Gang Starr/Mobb Deep
Guerillaz/Marvin Gaye
Daft Punk/Queen
J5/Herbie Hancock
Vanilla Ice/MC Hammer
My life as I know it is over for the next 4 weeks cuz of Final Fantasy XIII. I feel like Tiger Woods because it puts me in sex rehab 8-)

I finished Castlevania several weeks ago. Great friggin game! The last 2 boss fights are pretty amazing & the ending leaves some interesting possibilities for sequels.
Currently playing Borderlands with 2 buddies online. I'm probably going to DL the 1st expansion pack today(ish)
I also occasionally play online MAG. Such an awesome FPS.
I'm very much looking forward to Dead Space 2 which I beliveve comes out late next month. The 1st game was killer
I haven't messed with LBP yet but I understand it's a great game. Maybe I'll give it a whirl & if I like it I'll pick up LBP2

Uncharted 2 was pretty sweet.
Fear 2 scared me but was fun (I love playing with all the lights off...pretty creepy).
Resident Evil 5 sucks...I couldn't even finish it.
I am currently playing Assassins Creed (the first one) and it's pretty good; I love the cityscapes and graphics. I also habitually play FIFA '10.
QuoteI also habitually play FIFA '10.
Did you happen to play FIFA 'O9? I have FIFA '09 and I've never really cared for it. I've heard from friends that FIFA '10 is so much better but I have been holding off getting it.
just bought a ps3 move bundle for myself for christmas this year. my brother is mailing me a bunch of his games that he doesn't play much anymore (uncharted 1, 2, metal gear solid 4, skate) so really i only bought one "new" game so far: fallout-new vegas

Do you play campaign mode, multiplayer or both?
I'm not a CoD multiplayer fan. I find their series repetitive & kinda boring. Very small maps combined with quick run & gun shooting gets old fairly quickly. There has been very little innovation in their multiplayer. Plus the focus on kill streaks turns me off.
If you enjoy FPS multiplayers that are objective based then I highly recommend Battlefield 3. It a complete team oriented shooter. StaggerLee & I play online most evenings. Its crazy fun to drive tanks, jeeps, ATVs, transport vehicles, jets & helicopters all in one game. & that's just the vehicle aspect of it. The infantry combat is just as awesome. Great game!

I got it last night and have spent a few hours on it today. I don't have the online stuff for my ps3 so multiplayer isn't an option. I like the single player mode, but I figure I'll beat the single player mode within a week. The graphics are fantastic; makes me glad I updated my tv this summer. I haven't played any of the Battlefield series so I can't really compare the two. It's a solid game, but I think I'd pick the new Batman game over MW3.

I currently only play in campaign mode, I need to get a wifi signal booster. My internet is on the 2 nd floor of my house and I'm setup in my basemant. I played COD spec. Ops MW2. I did buy Battlefield 3 and now since I have taken that thru the campaign mode I would tend to agree with you now that I have that to compare to the COD series. I do like the weapons selection better in COD. I'm missing so much other cool shit by not playing online. Someday when I get my wifi taken care of I will join you guys online. Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm gonna pick it up.

Cool, If it takes you a week it will probably take me a month. I have to limit my play to about an hour at a time. I would be divorced if I went on 8 hour benders like the old days. I updated my tv also, I went with the 55" LG. Love love love the picture. Plus I sit about 8 feet away from my set. Put in a HUGE dip and go hunting. I heard a that new batman game was pretty sweet. It's an incredible game for sure. There are some bugs & glitches to work out but that's understandable given the scope of this game. Unfortunately, a game imparing/breaking bug exists at the moment. It has to do with the save file size which grows considerably over time. The save file grows due to the game remembering everything you do to the in game environment. Knock a plate off a table & it will never reset to it's original position. That may sound silly, but with millions of interactable items & the game remembering that they were moved it becomes a problem. It eats up too much memory & the game starts to lag in cities & high traffic areas. Help is on the way though, as a patch to fix this issue is in the works.
Overall, it's like no game I've ever played. Soooo much to do & the character development is a blast. I highly recommend it

Agreed on not liking Obilvion but really digging Skyrim. Haven't played much of late due to being completely addicted to Battlefield 3.
As for talking about Skyrim in public, just be sure to steer clear of any "arrow to the knee" jokes. That shit is old ;D
Has anyone checked on the PS3 exclusive Twisted Metal? It is alot like the old ones...awesome
In case you don't know the premise is just like mario kart battle. Except for adults haha

Anyone pick up The Last of Us? Just finished it last night. Holy crap what a great game! The story in the single player is probably the best ever made. I was completely immersed in it for a week. TLoU is, in my opinion, the best game I've played in the last 10 years or so. Highly recommended! Especially if you're into a stealthy, tense, story driven game.
Going to try the multiplayer soon. I hear it's very different from most online shooters so I'm definitely interested.
I finally dusted off my PS3 and have been playing it more lately.
Have a bunch of games because I have PSN+ and download everything they give away
and also have the latest MLB The Show
Probably going to pick up Last Of Us soon.
I think my name is "NarcoticTundra" which was a suggested name since the name I wanted was taken, and I thought "shit that's pretty ridic"
I haven't owned a Playstation since the 2 as I currently have a 360, but PS4>>>Xbox One
