I think it is a good lineup. I rarely ever go to festivals for the headliners so the additions of Eminem and Lil Wayne doesn't bother me.
Pretty awesome lineup. I may have to find my way down there this year...
take note:
--mavis staples
--wanda jackson
!!! soul & badassery of epic proportions
mavis' was my favorite set from b'roo 2007
It doesn't appear that they sell day tickets to Roo, if I can get a ticket at a reasonable enough cost to justify just going for a day to see MMJ at the show I may go.
If I went it would probably just be because of MMJ and Auerbach and Dr John SuperJam :o
...not that there arent other bands that I want to see, but certainly nothing that grabs me
what the fuck is super jam?

what the fuck is super jam?
It's like a musical royal rumble
Good lineup, except for Neon Trees and Lil Wayne. I could do without that.
I'm debating between going to Roo and going to Mountain Jam. MMJ is of course the common theme to both festies.
Bands I would like to see at Roo include the Keys and Explosions In The Sky as well as Buffalo Springfield with Neil! Also, I'd be interested in seeing Arcade Fire, The Decemberists and Iron & Wine.
I'm just not so sure about how I feel in dealing with the crowds and the heat.
When will it be known if MMJ are one of the headlining acts or is it already known? If they play into the wee hours of the night like their last Roo appearance, that could tip the scales and make me just suck it up. 8)
Three of the best places to see MMJ are NYC, Louisville, and Bonnaroo. Although the schedule still hasn't been released, I think MMJ will play a late night set. If that's the case, this will be THE BEST show of the summer tour. Their 2008 set has gone down as a top 5 Bonnaroo set ever. It kills me that I wasn't able to go that there. There is no possible way that I will be missing another epic 4 hour face melter. IMO it will be the best and most talked about set of the weekend.
I don't want to go to Roo, but I don't know if I can stand missing a Roo jacket set

I'm actually excited for Lil Wayne, an added bonus on top of MMJ and all the other awesome artists

Whatever helps you justify one way or the other, let me know. Maybe it will make sense to me too.
My two cents:
I've bought tickets for numerous 'roos and have had to skip due to last minute emergencies...funerals, weddings, etc. I've always had to sell my tickets at a discount on Craigslist because they've been hard to get rid of.
The advantage to this is that by the time you're ready to go, say late May, odds are the schedules are already released, and you've got the advantage of the 2nd and 3rd lineups. This year it seems strangely light on electronic, and Inforoo supposedly had Blackstar and Massive Attack confirmed as well, which would be really interesting (I think Blackstar went against MMJ in 2006, or maybe it was Blackalicious).
The risk here is that (a) bogus tickets and (b) being the "10th" year there's a big chance of it selling out making tickets a bit more insane. So take that for what its worth.
I can't make a commitment until late may, but I will say this: if MMJ has a late night set, I am almost certain that would be a deciding factor for me in and of itself. Unless hangout or Mountainjam (Waka is too far for me) can guarantee they have an open-ended set list, I am likely going to try to go
Plus there's the whole superjam thing. I think any member of this band is ripe for joining in a few songs. I'd even rate the chance of a Patrick set on drums as exceptionally high since he toured with Dan in support of his solo album.

Well, after talking things over with my wife, I think I'd rather take the money we would spend on a festival and use it to go to multiple Jacket shows over the summer (hoping they have an extensive tour off the new album) as well as going to see some other intriguing artists on tour this summer. Tentatively kicking things off May 28th in Columbus with the Avetts. 8)
I don't know if this helps you out at all, but it is helping me justify things a bit... For now anyways. :D :)
Anyone else pick up tickets?
I decided to go big for the tenth anniversary of the festival and picked up VIP tickets. After four years of GA camping, I figure VIP tickets will add something new to the Bonnaroo experience.
June can't come soon enough. Now let's get some non-festival tour dates already!
lets do it again...
Why is it that someone always has to talk down on a festival line up right off the bat. Lil' Wayne? Eminem? Really? YES REALLY!! These are two of the most prolific musicians around. Get with it.

Yes, and if you are autotuned and quantized, you're not a musician even if you play music.
If you market your music to an audience of teenagers and those stuck emotionally as such, you're an entertainer at best, and not a very good one.
Save that shit for the ClearChannel hot 97.1 crunk-a-thons that go down every summer in NYC.
I picked up tickets on Saturday as soon as they went on sale. We got teir 3 (of 4) ticket pricing. This is our first Bonnaroo and I couldn't be more excited about the lineup, outside of eminem and lil wayne. They sold more tickets on Saturday than they ever have on opening day of sales. Also you will notice about 50-70 acts missing from the linup poster, that's a lot to still be announced and I think the general belief is that some of those yet to be announced acts are going to be rather big. I don't think tickets will be hard to get rid of this year if need be.
On a personal note...YEAH BONNAROO!!!! I can't f'n wait to be there!! Hope to run into some fellow Jackets forum folks from out East as this will be my forst Jacket show East of the Gorge. (All have been west coast shows)

Sorry I don't follow pop music trends, I would've thought people here would be smarter than that. Autotune makes me nauseous.

Yeah, I also got tickets on Saturday right at noon and got tier 3 tix. My first 'Roo was in '08 and was mainly interested in seeing MMJ of course. That '08 show was absolutely mind-blowing. I am really excited about this year and what kind of tricks they have up their sleeves, but the rain in '08 was truly magical and unlikely to repeat itself. I will be traveling from central Kentucky. Anyone else coming down from KY?
I'll be driving down from South Central Ky and meeting a friend from Durham. While MMJ is my primary reason for going/living,there are some fantastic, albeit lesser known, acts in the lineup worth mentioning.Jessica Lea Mayfield is friggin' fantastic and is doing a $12 show at Louisville's Headliners April 9th for anyone interested in a cheap preview.
Good call on JLM, kymom - I'd say the whole bottom quarter of that lineup is pretty choice.
If I do end up going it will be VIP - we'll have to meet up, oistheone!
how quickly have the tickets been selling out? There's only level 4 tickets left which are $250, how long do you think before these ones sell out?
I'm betting the remaining tickets won't sell out for a few months, but you just never know. The first lineup addition could create another surge for tickets that would deplete what is left, so I'd pick 'em up ASAP!
And ALady, ya gotta go VIP! Is there a better way to spend a grand than to hang out at the biggest MMJ Fan Convention since October in New York? I think not!
I would hope it doesn't sell out. I'm still indecisive as he'll abOut Roo. Electri forest, waka, or Roo. All have their ups and downs
From a source that leaked the headliners a couple weeks before lineup was announced, She said MMJ will be playing on the main stage before AF, so I am guessing there will not be a late show. I would also guess they will get at least 2 hours if not 2 1/2. Someone on Inforoo also mentioned before the lineup was announced that Grace Potter & the Nocturnals would be playing on the main stage as well, so I can see GPN>MMJ>AF
^^^ I hope that is not true... Bonnaroo really F'd up if they have MMJ in a pre-HL spot rather then LN after AF..
Big time fuck up by Roo if this is the case

If you're referring to "insider" on inforoo, she never said MMJ would be playing before Arcade Fire. She said that Arcade Fire and MMJ are both playing Friday, but "could not recall which act is first".
I've got a strong hunch that Arcade Fire plays 8:30-11:00ish, making way for an MMJ late night set on the main stage. It just doesn't make sense to me to give a band that almost always plays no more than their usual 90-minute set (Arcade Fire) an unlimited late night window.
^^ That is just what I assumed would happen
Could Bonnaroo be that dumb to have MMJ play a daytime set? with a limited amount of time.
Since Insider said MMJ and AF on fri I pretty much assumed AF int he reg headlining spot followed by an epic late night set from MMJ
I would be super bummed if it was MMJ ---> AF

I stand corrected. Some much gibberish talk happening on my message board that I thought that is what she said. In that case it could go either way, but I would not be disappointed if they weren't late night just because I know they will have a long set. I would take a stab and say Preservation Jazz Band might back them up on horns
^^^ I have not kept up with Inforoo for awhile now so I don't know if Insider has given any more info on the Friday schedule... So I really have no idea as to what the order will be on Friday other then just assuming AF ---> MMJ for obvious reasons (length of set)
You scared the crap outa me Jerzy, when I read your post it sounded definitive that it was MMJ ---> AF... IMHO that would be a HUGE mistake by Roo... I know I would be super PO.
Purchased tickets on Saturday but can't go any more. Anybody need tickets?!
The general consensus on Inforoo (take from it what you will) is that Buffalo Springfield-->Arcade Fire-->MMJ. I can see this happening from everything I have read. BS from 6-8 AF from 9-11 and MMJ from 12-??? All on the What stage. Words can't describe what that experience would be like...

Thanks for the heads up man! Turns out I'm still going as of now just with different people who I don't really like all that much :-\ It's going to be a long ass 20ish hour drive lol. If they are crazy and don't want to see MMJ I may be looking to meet up with people from here!
Roo tickets are never that scarce. Heck I've never seeen so many scalpers as I did at Roo's entry road. Craiglist will be chock full of tickets too.
Its been a long long debate between all of my friends between waka and roo with a ton of flip flopping but i think we landed on Roo. Roo has a better line up but waka has a better everything else. So, I guess I'll see you guys on the farm.
The only way i wont be at roo is if electric forest blows us all away on monday, but its not going to happen based on the rumors ive read.
I'll be going to Bonnaroo! I'm hoping to actually meet up with all of you this year. (I haven't order the tickets just yet, but it's about 99% a go. Should be a official this Saturday)
I'm sure that MMJ will be one of the top shows, if not the top show of the weekend but there are a lot of other amazing acts at Bonnaroo. Who are you guys excited to see? Here is a list of the so far confirmed acts I want to catch.
-Arcade Fire
-Black Keys
-Buffalo Springfield
-String Cheese Incident
-The Decemberists
-Ray Lamontagne
-Dr John
-Pretty Lights
-STS9
-Explosions in the Sky
-Florence & The Machine
-Deerhunter
-Wanda Jackson
-Portugal The Man
-Phosphorecent
-Black Angels
-Karen Elson
That is stuff I really want to see. I honestly think the only acts I don't want to see are the hip hop guys.
Is anyone else going to Bonnaroo for the first time? This will be our first trip to the farm. We are camping in tent only and probably trying to get somewhere around the Inforoo camp from the forum boards. What's everybody else planning?
This is going to my 2nd time, and I'll be camping. Inforoo and forum buddies on here were very helpful to making my first time a great time. So if you have any questions let me know. It looks like our list will be the very similar.
My Morning Jacket
The Black Keys
Arcade Fire
Buffalo Springfield
Superjam
Dr. John
Big Boi
Gregg Allman
Explosions in the Sky
The Strokes
Wanda Jackson (I expect Jack White to be there)
The Black Angels
Bassnectar
Bootsy Collins
They'll still announce way more. I wouldn't mind seeing Eminem. I'd never just go see him, but since he's there, what hell, right? The list already is better than the time I went in 08, so it was a easy choice to go.

An E-Z Up with a tarp facing East on the side and another on the ground plus any sort of cot/mattress (however thin is fine) makes a much better sleeping arrangement than a tent. Tents trap heat so fast and wake you up at 630-7 every morning. I took a tent last year and my friend took an EZ up and a cot. I would wake after an hour and a half of sleep from the heat and when he woke up just go get on his cot and could sleep until nine. The easy up allows for a breeze and its worth it. I'm also taking ear plugs this year without a doubt. I think I'll probably stuff a small tent in my car incase of a crazy downpour, which we didn't get last year. The EZ-Up is more expensive obviously, but I figure if I buy one I can use it for future festivals and events.

I'll have to kindly disagree and say '08's line up was amazing. Pearl Jam and Jacket. All ya need man, all ya need.
Haha, yeah 08 was good, plus it was the first time I've seen Pearl Jam. But this year I'll finally get to see The Keys. They always sellout in a day here. I've been screwed over by just waiting a day too long before, so this year is more about after years and years I finally get to see them. I'm really excited!
I'd love to bring an e-z up but we are flying from Calgary so that isn't happening. LOL. There are a lot of things I would bring if I was driving but we'll have to survive with whatever we can bring. That and some awesome inforoo-sters offer to pick things up for people and then hook up at the show for an exchange. What a great sense of community!
Although the 08 lineup was sick this year is as good or better depending on what you like. I am a PJ nut but have seen them several times elsewhere as has most every PJ fan. This years festival offers some huge once in a lifetime acts/ potential collaborations which Bonnaroo said is their goal for this year. Buffalo Springfield and Dr John!!! Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn!
Jack White is playing drums for his wife Karen and I also heard that Carl 'snowy bramble' is playing lap steel for her. I also expect Jack to play with Wanda (their album rocks).
I can see Neil coming out with MMJ and that will make my face melt.
There is so much more to talk and speculate about but we have 3 months to go so I'll leave it at that for now!
BONNAROOOOOOOO!
Yeah based on abovefactors plus the fact that jack white has been heavy in the news lately I figured he may show up for super jam.

Haha yeah, we have 3 months to speculate, but if even one of your feelings comes true I'd freak. BUT if Neil plays with the Jacket for even just one song I'd say my life is complete. Lets hope for the best!!!
So I would love to go to Roo this year. I've never been, I live near Toronto, Ontario so it will be a far drive, but I'm sure it will be worth it if MMJ's set was what it was like in 08 at Roo. My question is though; last time I checked only level 4 tickets were available. I don't mind paying 250 or even 300 to go but how many more tickets do they have before they sell out? If they do, I should be able to find some on kijiji/craigslist/other places, am I right? I reaalllly need to find a job so I can get on this!

Really don't mean to rain on the parade here, but while Jack and Carl played on Karen Elson's album, neither have joined her on stage for live performances. She uses a different, but equally bitchin' band. Jackson Smith (son of Patti -- husband of Meg) is a fantastic guitarist.
on jambase it says that mmj are playing 6/9 at bonnaroo. it still says may 20-22 at the hangout.
I would be willing to be it only says 6/9 because that's the day it starts. I'd be wildly surprised if they played thursday
They won't be playing Thursday. According to Insider on inforoo (who hasn't been wrong yet) they will play Friday Night. Either before or after Arcade Fire.
We changed our minds and have decided to rent an SUV for security and privacy. Oddly enough it costs the same as our shuttle bus tickets would have cost. Who's all driving into Bonnaroo?

in 2008, the previous last show ended a 3-4 hours before MMJ before so there was a long break and the crowd completely cleared.. we stood there for a good 2-3 hours before it started and were right up front. (Metallica was playing on the main stage so most people were over there)..on the one hand, they're bigger now than in 08 but considering that bonnaroo crowd's tastes, probably can walk up close up to an hour before the show...
My only issue with that is Arcade Fire will be playing and I won't be missing that. However, I would have done the same as you in 2008.

I'm pretty confident that MMJ will be on the same stage as Arcade Fire. The only question is does MMJ pre-headline for Arcade Fire or do they play late night main stage after Arcade fire.

In 08, Pearl Jam had some pre sold tickets to several thousand im guessing. There was a marked line or bracelets or something and they let people in the pit before the set began. Im not sure if this was a PJ thing or a Bonnaroo thing. I asked one dude in line if it was a Ten Club thing, maybe I missed it, but he said no.

erik, the one time if was in the pit at the main stage got in line during the previous band. once that band was done, they cleared out the pit and let in about 1,000 into it. once they reach capacity they close it. if someone leaves, they let someone else in.
even at max capacity it's not over crowded. this pit system is only in effect at the main stage. the other stages are all straight walk-up affairs.
for the record: pit viewing was wilco in 2007
Thanks Ms Yvon!

Do we know if that's done for every headliner? How do you even know how to line up, I saw no marked area...just kinda curious about all this.
From my experience in 08 and 09, for every headlining act that plays the main stage they open the pit and let in a set number of people. All you have to do is line up on the right side of the stage (if you're facing it) by the barricades, and they usually let people file in about a half hour to an hour before the show starts.
I saw day-time acts and late-nighters from the pit so it's always an option! The bigger the act though, the earlier you need to line up. There were people lined up for Phish all day long, but for Metallica and B.B. King I showed up about 30 min. before and got in easy.
I was there last in 08 and the PJ line was right in the middle of the main crowd, which I thought was strange.
with all the new west coast/canada/england announcements, looks like Bonnaroo will be my final answer!
Even though I was hoping for some more Southern dates, I feel more at ease knowing that my 3rd Bonnaroo is just around the corner

Ergh. I guess chances will have to be taken then. thanks for the info
Everything seems to be a little wierd this year with old Bonnaroo. They announced bands on a different day than the tickets went on sale. They have waited longer than normal to start announcing additional acts. I think they also announced less acts to start with than usual as well.
It's their 10th anniversary so a lot of people are thinking they may do a few things out of the norm such as having stage acts on thursday instead of just having the tents going. If they do that it wouldn't surprise me if they have late night sets on thursday as well this year. And if they do that it wouldn't be shocking for them to release the schedule earlier than normal so people could change/make arrangements to get there earlier than they were planning.
Personally I think they have some BIG surprises in store for us this year. They almost have to, I mean Sasquatch added an entire day for their 10th this year and Bonnaroo is supposed to be the biggest and best so I imagine they will do whatever they can to maintain that and I think there is proof of that in just the initial lineup alone. Who else has an artist showing up to play the album their festival is named after?

I feel pretty confident in saying there will NOT be main stage acts on Thursday. In addition to the problem of people who can't arrive on Thursday feeling cheated out of a decently-big name act there are also tons and tons of people who wouldn't be able to see them because they are still in line or pulling into the festival. I know this interview is from last year but it gives you an idea of how they people who run Bonnaroo feel about doing Thursday stage acts/mini-headliners:
QuoteHas there been a reason for not including a mini headliner on Thursday?
Because at some point you've just gotta decide you're not going to do some things. All of a sudden your festival lasts a week instead of three days and originally the Thursday night thing evolved because it was just local acts and regional acts and we didn't even announce who was playing. It was intended just to give the people who came to the festival early some music that they could enjoy before the actual festival kicked in big time. And it was our opportunity to surprise people with new artists that they probably didn't know, but that we thought they'd really like. Then it became more and more popular and more people kept coming to the festival earlier and earlier so we turned it up a notch and started booking bigger up and coming acts. It's still generally focused on relatively new artists to their scene but have a considerable buzz gathering around their music, but we really don't want to program the big stages that early in the weekend. It's enough to stay focused on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
So then, in the future incorporating a Thursday headliner to the mix is something you wouldn't be interested in?
Never say never but it's not part of the plans for right now.

While he says "Never say Never" I feel like it's not going to happen this year.
I do agree that they will have some big things planned. They have been promoting the fact that they will focus on the collaboration side of things again so we could see a lot of unique sit-ins. I'm sure there will also be some interesting comedians and films there. Probably a big name surprise or two (speculation is on Jack White showing up for Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson's sets).
Now you're crushing my dreams on 2 forum boards. LMAO ;D What about some late night thursday action this year? What if the Which stage opened at 00:01 Friday? Technically it would be a Friday act.
Additions tomorrow? Any believers? Or am I running on endless optimism?
Someone on inforoo said that Jim told him tonight at the Everest show that they are opening for arcade fire playing 8 to 10. :(
I just read that. Fuck me is that upsetting. I know--boo hoo we still get to see MMJ and so many people wish they could be there but can't, but I'm still going to bitch if this is true. I really was banking on a 4+ hour set. Part of the reason we are spending the $$ to go to Bonnaroo was based on that prospect. I'm going to stop now before I go over the deep end. :'(
It is a huge let down for me also. I was trying to talk myself into going and dealing with all bs that goes along with roo but now I'm not so sure.
I'm trying to come to grips with this and here is what I have come up with. Florence and the Machine playing in California on Sunday the 12th of June so most think that she is a lock for Friday. The What stage could very well look like this on Friday.
Florence and The Machine
Decemberists
MMJ
Arcade Fire
MMJ and AF time slots are confirmed and Decemberists are confirmed for Friday as well. Hopefully Bonnaroo doesn't decide to have the Decemberists close out the Which thus conflicting with MMJ. They should put Lil Wayne or something as the Which closer IMO.
It really is hard to digest having spent A LOT of $$ already to go (Flights were 800 each) in hopes of seeing the boys do another late night epic set but when I really think about it, is 2 hours less of a MMJ set going to ruin my weekend? Hell no!
Now, lets talk about what kind of set we are going to get if it is only 120 minutes. I figure 18-21 songs and since the set is short they will cut some usual songs like 'Thank you too!', 'Wonderful' ect in favour of tunes that are a little more rockin. Also I calculated that if you didn't sleep you could listen to Circuital about 260 times between its release and the start of Bonnaroo on the 9th.
IF true, this is very upsetting. And it would probably mean I am out.
I understand that the earlier slot is probably the more "high profile" slot, but it would really be a shame if they had to stick to a 2-hour time limit and couldn't really stretch their legs. I'll be sad if I've missed out on the epic Roo sets of years past. :-\
I have a ticket lined up, but I'm waiting until the official lineup is out to decide if I'm going to use it. Thankfully my ticket buddy is pretty understanding ;D
have to agree here. if they play a 2 hour set, i'm out.
Ah, I want a late night as much as the next person, but the one/two punch of mmj/af is still going to be ridiculous.
I don't care for Arcade Fire, so...
Late night acts are announced in April according to a thread on Inforoo, but then again EVERYTHING with Bonnaroo has been behind this year. I really hope this isn't going to stop MMJ forum folk from going. I mean the weekend is 96 hours long and MMJ being 2 or 4 hours shouldn't wreck a weekend of amazing music. Don't get me wrong, i'm as bummed as the next guy about this but its Bonnaroo and the lineup without additions is already beyond sick so...
I'm going.

Fair enough, but after catching them live last summer, I can't imagine anyone not enjoying themselves, at the least.
Did you see AF do Rococo at the Juno's on sunday? Wow! My first AF show was in November and they absolutely blew me away. I used to hate AF, i mean really hate them. After Neon Bible came out I started to like their tunes I would hear on the radio and now I am a full on AF freak. Not saying that 1 live show will do that for you but I promise, as a fellow PJ superfan, you WILL enjoy AF.
You are the resident PJ superfan right?
I don't like AF at all. There will have to be some major additions for me to choose Roo over Waka now...
What a bummer. Bonnaroo earned major points in my book after the solid lineup this year, but not giving MMJ a late night set is just wrong. Maybe they moved their set to 8-10 because they are renting a rain machine for only 2 hours in case the boys don't cause a torrential downpour as in years past...
While it is indeed a bummer that MMJ will allegedly play the 8-10 slot on Friday, it's still MMJ at Bonnaroo!!! You know they're gonna bring it no matter what time slot they're given. Carl has stated that Bonnaroo means as much to the band as it means to the fans -- I'd say that's a verbal guarantee that they won't disappoint.
And of course, you just never know what could happen between now and when the schedule comes out. While I don't doubt the validity of the poster who provided us with this nugget, all we're going on is hearsay information right now. Still wouldn't be surprised to see MMJ late night. But either way, I'm going to MMJ at Bonnaroo and I'm going to have a hell of a time.
And the silver lining here is less chance for conflicts! Bring on Dr. John & The Meters!
This concludes your daily dose of optimism.
I'm basing my decision on roo on the schedule for sure. If jacket gets a open ended set I'm 90%. If not, then it'll be based on conflicts because I'm not in to the headliners that much excluding buffalo.

this. If jacket gets said tim slot, i'm gonna need few conflicts and maybe some good artist additions. we'll see in the coming weeks, we'll just see. I don't mean to say that its going to be a boring set, I just think with that set time and the release of circuital there will be few chances for old gems and awesome covers

Bonnaroo had one redeeming quality, MMJ's late night set...wow...
God I hope that is wrong.. . I bought my ticket and help organize a nice sized group of friends so I'm pretty much commited to going but a pre-headlining spot leaves such a sour taste in my mouth...
Has AC/Superfly completely lost the pulse of their fans?
I feel like I'm 9 and an older bully just told me Santa is fake.
Please let this not be true!

I've seen them. I reeeeeallllllly don't care for them.
The lineup is solid, but in terms of unique acts you can only catch at Roo, it's a little light this year. Granted those unique sets all have the potential to be pretty epic (superjam, Dr. John performing
Desitively Bonnaroo, the possibility of Jack White with Loretta Lynn and/or Wanda Jackson...).

Those unique sets are what Bonnaroo is all about! There's a good chance the Meters will never play together again, ever -- let alone with Dr. John and performing one of the funkiest albums of all time in its entirety. Come for the funk, stay for the Jacket, that's what I say.
You know the boys will find a way to make this set unique regardless of when or how long they play. I mean c'mon, it's Roo X we're talkin' about here!
Man, I am such a Bonnaroo cheerleader.
I do think we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves based on a random message board posting.
*waves Bonnaroo pom poms*
My Morning Jacket played a one hour set in 2003.
They played an hour and a half set in 2004.
The had an hour and a half long set in 2005.
They had a two and a half hour set in 2006.
And we all know about the 3+ hour set in 2008.
But the key thing to remember in EVERY one of those shows is that My Morning Jacket rocked faces and won over many fans and continued their journey to where they are today.
I think a lot of people here are upset and that's understandable because who wouldn't want to see their favorite (or one of their favorite) band play a marathon set at one of the biggest music festivals in the country. But I think people are looking at it the wrong way. I feel like playing 8-10 would be amazing for MMJ and they would be playing in front of a huge crowd on the biggest stage in what essentially has been the headliner slot in the past. Even if Arcade Fire plays after them......My Morning Jacket is basically headlining Bonnaroo and playing the prime spot on the What stage.
I feel like Jim and the gang wouldn't take this news as hard or negative as some of the fans here seem to be and maybe we should try viewing it from some other perspectives. I personally am happy that it frees up more time for the late nights which are usually filled with conflicts. Now I think I will get to see the full Dr. John set that I wanted (i'm assuming he's playing late night).
Either way......MMJ will be amazing :D. 2 hours or 4 hours. I think it's amazing that Roo has given them so much exposure over the years and allowed them to take a few prime late night slots that only a handful of bands usually get.

I don't think MMJ would take it as negative, either. I think it's a testament to how deservedly big they've gotten. But to make the opposite argument, I think as much exposure as Bonnaroo have given MMJ, I think MMJ have given continual credibility to a festival that continues to get worse every year, while keeping its prices the same. The late night Bonnaroo sets are the main draws for a lot of people. The superjam was a really cool thing, also, all the collaboration. 2 out of the 4 times I went, were ONLY to see MMJ. With all the cool festivals (Hangout on the BEACH, Lolla in a cool city, Mt Jam up in the mountains) I have no idea (other than MMJ) why anyone would wanna trek out to that farm anymore. To me it's become the non-music fan's festival (then again, I'm getting old and cranky)..so I think MMJ playing the main stage is GREAT for them but kind of a bummer for fans

I've gone almost every year since 2005. Missed last year because of some BS but wanted to go badly. There are always at least 40 acts I want to see and I have a great time. There's an amazing amount of music on the lineup this year (and the years I've gone in the past) so that's why I would want to trek down there. I really enjoy it for more than just MMJ. This year I get to see Buffalo Springfield, Gregg Allman, The Black Keys, Robert Plant, Cold War Kids, Dr. John (twice!), and so much more all in one weekend. I'm so excited. I can't wait for My Morning Jacket and all the other great acts ;D

Have to agree here. Roo has become a non-music fans festival. I think this year is the break out proof of that? While they're grabbing acts as great and legendary as Neil Young and Buff Spring, they're bringing in acts like Lil Wayne. Between Lil Wayne and all the other 99.7 DJX bands playing, they are attracting a crowd that is just different than any other festival other than Coach. When it comes down to it, it's a festival for the masses, where as Waka or Mtn Jam are not. Honestly, that's not even a bad thing, it's just not what I personally want. I wa going to go this year for a MMJ 2008 repeat. For me that's enough to me to make the jump to waka this year, but it's all personal preference. Obviously there are music lovers at bonnaroo, and idiots at all festivals, I just think the ratio is higher at Roo. Between those factors and the environment I this there are many better choices.
The Superjam is back this year, though... ???

It ain't much, but I'll take it ;D
I'm actually sort of annoyed that Dennis Coffey was added, he was one of the acts keeping me away from Roo this year... ;D (I'm supposed to see him here on Roo Thursday, dangit).
Superjam is one aspect of Roo I've never seen, and I don't really get. What music do they play if its just a "super group"
Whatever they damn well please. 8)
So... Covers of basically anything? Covers that many people would know or what?
Who knows what they'll do this year, but in the past it's been songs from the people participating in the jam and covers. To wit, the '07 Superjam setlist (stolen from Inforoo):

SuperJam used to be a bunch of musicians coming together and playing a bunch of songs. No real rhyme or reason.
The 2004 Superjam featured:
Stanton Moore, Maceo Parker, George Porter, Eric Krasno, Neil Evans, Papa Mali, Adam Deitch, Reggie Watts, The New Orleans Horns and others.
and they played:
01 - Intro
02 - Jam
03 - Check Out Your Mind
04 - The World Is A Little Bit Under The Weather Jam
05 - Shake Everything You Got
06 - If You Want Me To Stay
07 - I Walk On Gilded Splinters
08 - Unidentified Instrumental
09 - Soul Power

2005 had Herbie Hancock, Pino Palladino and Questlove with I think a few others playing a mix of songs.
Some years they've put together a little theme or group for the show. In 2006 they had Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon from Phish play with the Benevento Russo Duo for a bunch of jammy songs. they even brought Phil Lesh out for some Grateful Dead tunes.
Other years it was less of the original superjams and more of a group with a theme. 2008 had Les Claypool and Gogol Bordello play a bunch of Tom Waits covers with Kirk Hammet from Metallica joining in.
2007 as listed above was a Zeppelin-themed superjam with some other tunes mixed in.
The last two years saw Superjam being left off the Bonnaroo schedules for one reason or another. Either cancelled last minute or other things took up the focus of the people running it. But this year they have vowed to bring it back by calling it Revenge of the Superjam and are putting a big focus on the collaboration aspect of Roo.
This year there are three sets that they are considering "Superjams":
• Dr. John and The Original Meters performing Desitively Bonnaroo
• SuperJam with Dan Auerbach and Dr. John
• Global Gypsy Punk Revue curated by Eugene Hütz
The set with Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys) and Dr. John will likely be the most representative of the superjams of the past. Expect many guests and a lot of different tunes - likely classics and standards. I could see some Dr. John songs, maybe some New Orleans Funk or some old blues covers (The Black Keys covered a whole album of Junior Kimbrough songs in the past).
The one with Eugene Hutz (of Gogol Bordello) should be a wild time with a lot of Gogol members and other high energy music.
The final set with the Meters and Dr. John playing the full Desitively Bonnaroo album will be amazing and I expect some guests on that one as well.
can't wait.
Thanks ITM! I knew you'd be on it.
So wait....question about this:

I thought the Revue thing was going to be more like a curated tent, like David Byrne did that year? I don't know if I read that somewhere or just assumed.
I'm still not totally clear on what that will be. I think he will be curating a stage one day and I could see the "Global Punk Revue" either being a set of Superjam stuff with many guests on the stage that Eugene Hutz curates at the end of all the other acts or maybe it just refers to the whole day of different acts that will have a lot of collaboration.
This is from an e-mail from the band:
We play many amazing festivals all over the world but Bonnaroo has always held a special place in our hearts and Gogol Bordello will not only return to the scene of the crime this year but Eugene will be curating a Gypsy Punk Parranda stage with the Bonnaroo folks to help bring in some of our favorite flavors from all over the world. Hutz and Dubta will be Djing as well and plenty of other cool stuff to be announced. In other words Bonnaroo will prove once again the place to be ... Don't sleep until then. And stay plugged in here and Bonnaroo.com for more info and stage line-up as it develops. PARTY!!
So I guess we'll get more info....I just know that Bonnaroo has mentioned that this year they have 3 superjams and the Gypsy punk thing was one of them. Check it out here:

I was thinking the same thing. The large number of festivals that they are playing, and only the handful of stand alone dates seem to suggest that they really do just want to introduce the new material and get their tour legs back under them.
Maybe a long Bonnaroo set just wasn't in their cards...I could understand that, especially since bonnaroo is early in the tour
I don't think Bonnaroo is a festival for the masses at all. They may have some mainstream acts now but the schedule offers SO much more than any of the other festivals. Case and point--super jam, global punk review, shows that start at 3am, as well as the spirit of Bonnaroo.
Am I excited that Eminem and Lil Wayne are on the bill? Fuck no, I wish there were two other acts instead but one could say that about all the festival lineups.
As ITM has shown there really has only been one super long MMJ set and all of their Bonnaroo sets have been classified as classic so there really is no need to worry there.
I get that AF and Eminem might not be exciting for some and I think that is great because Bonnaroo schedules in a way that forces you to make decisions so you're only going to see shows that you really want to see. (unless you're camping in front waiting for a set)
shows at 3am aren't for the masses? The line up isnt for the masses more than say Hangout, Mtn Jam, Wakarusa, High Sierra, etc etc etc? Bonnaroo is THE MOST commercial and accessable festival in the united states, except for maybe Lolla. On our half of the country, how many first time festie attenders are you gonna see go to Roo as opposed to any of the other many festivals available. I don't think its even an arguable point that Bonnaroo isn't a festival for the masses more so than any other festival. A ridiculous amount of people from frats all over the mid west and south will be walking around bonnaroo this year because Mumford, Black KEys, Wayne, Wiz, Eminem, etc and none of them will give a shit about Buff Springfield or Dr. John. Thats not me being a dick, thats being realistic. Ive had good times at Roo, so I'm not talking down on it, but it also ain't the end all of festivals.
I have to say that Hangout will probably be similar as far as crowd goes.
And those are just my personal feelings for the day
All fests are for the masses...just different masses. I sometimes think we (music junkies) forget what mainstream music actually is. I bet your average radio listener could name about three bands on any given festival lineup.
I have been to just about every American major (and lots of minors) and I still think the Roo crowd was the nicest and most respectful of the performers/performances out of any of them. *shrug*
The crowd is nice, sure. Although, I don't think I've ever seen an altercation at a festival. I also notice that camping festivals in general do have a better sense of "community" or something than urban festivals. At camping fests it's always been easy to meet people camping next door and things. I was arguing the "mainstreamness" of Roo over other festivals. Not saying that all fests don't have some mainstream acts. I look forward to my first Wakarusa experience. (unless Roo drops something awesome next week or with the schedule)
One thing I will say about Roo and awesome experiences is this. Last year I went with only 2 people that I knew instead of the other group of about 10 people we couldve gone with. We ended up camping with people we met from Bowling Green and they've turned into some really great friends that I met through bonnaroo.
And, are the other SuperJam artists with Doc John and Dan just going to be surprises?
Well, you throw in "first time festie attenders" and "people from frats" "none of [whom] will give a shit" and it tends to blur any point about the relative quality/mainstream popularity of the lineup. ;)
Most folks don't care about music festivals at all, and certainly don't travel great distances for them. If they have a vague interest in a few acts on the bill, they'll probably just go to whatever festival is in their backyard.
i must've missed it. what this about mmj playing 8 on the mainstage friday? is this a very reliable source? i know it hasn't been confirmed, but why does everyone seem to think it's a given. i thought for sure they'd do a late night. i already have my ticket, and it's not gonna put a damper on my mood, the lineup is awesome, but i will be disappointed.

Someone on Inforoo.com who lives in Louisville told us about how Carl and other band members played a little bit in a small venue with the band everest or something. The guy said that he got to talk to Jim James and Jim told him they'd be on the main stage 8-10 before Arcade Fire.
It's not the most reliable of sources.....an internet message board.......but i'm inclined to believe him. Insider (who told us about all of the headliners at Roo and hasn't been wrong) told us a while ago that Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket would be playing "one after the other" but at the time she didn't know who was first.
As for the whole "Bonnaroo is mainstream" argument I really don't see the problem. Are there a few mainstream acts on the lineup? Sure. But it's not like we have Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas, and a bunch of other untalented people. The artists that may be considered "mainstream" can still put on an entertaining show (which is what Roo looks for when booking acts) so I don't see the problem. I really don't care if there are some idiots at the festival.....every single festival I've been to I've encountered a majority of awesome people and a minority of idiots. Doesn't matter what festival I go to.....people are people.
Is Bonnaroo more accessible to a casual person? Sure.....but that's the point of having a huge 80,000 person festival...you NEED it to be accessible. If Bonnaroo only wanted to sell 30,000 tickets then they may not feel the need to book Kings of Leon or Eminem.
I guess i'm just tired of seeing people bash Bonnaroo by calling it "mainstream" as if it's some terrible thing. It seems so pompous and condescending to make judgements on a large amount of people and call them "not real music fans" and things like that because of who they may like or for their reasons for going to a music festival. You guys realize that almost all of the artists on the lineup wouldn't be considered "mainstream" anyway, right? Just because there are like 10 artists on the card that you don't like doesn't mean you can't find TONS of amazing artists who are creating epic music.

Like say... Eminem, Wiz Kalifa, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, or Kings Of Leon? (and 3 of those are this year!!) We seem to be arguing different points here. Bonnaroo is the most accessible and has the most user friendly line up for a camping music festival in the united states and possibly the world. HOWEVER (what everyone seems to be missing me saying) Bonnaroo does have its good qualities and I've had good times. This year I don't know if Im going because the crowd and line up, imo, have been going down hill in the past 3 or so years. Missing out on a late night MMJ set was what had me ready to buy a ticket, but now I'm not so sure.

Well I disagree about the crowd and the lineup. You list 3 acts that you think may suck but there will be over 147 other amazing acts. So I don't really see the problem. Different strokes for different folks though. You're experiences must have been different from mine.
Man I don't know else to say what I'm trying to say. Different strokes indeed. I'm honestly hoping for some really great artist additions because half my friends are going to waka and half are going to roo and I don't know what to choose
Additions supposed to come out sometime later this week. Keep an eye out :)
I know they need to add some reggae but beyond that I'm not sure what is really needed. I guess it depends on what you really like. Some people want more electronic, some want more indie, some want more headliners. Personally I love the lineup as is because of everything it already offers so additions are gravy to me. We also decided as soon as it was rumoured that MMJ and AF would be playing that there was no way we were missing Bonnaroo this year. I can think of a few acts for low, mid, and high-ish teirs I'd love to have added but I can't honestly say I have any idea of what they intend on adding. I do look forward to trying to make up a mock schedule when the additions come out.
Rental tents at Bonnaroo??? Just ended up with a years worth of backpay so I'm thinking of letting them rape me for $750 in exchange for a tent that is bigger, with cots/pillows/blankets/table/chairs, more secure, and very close to Centeroo. Anybody done this before? Kepp in myind we are flying in from Calgary, Alberta so buying a bunch of crap at Walmart to leave behind seems pointless if not necessary.

doesn't sound like a bad idea since you're flying. last year i was camped right next door to these and they are indeed really close to centeroo. It might also help with the heat in a tiny tent at night. its a lot of money, but if you have the $$ go for it
The pictures show people opening both sides so the air just flows like an ez-up. I think we're going to go for it. First Bonnaroo, might as well be a little more comfortable and guarantee ourselves being close to Centeroo. And now we won't spend $$ at walmart just to leave our camp gear behind.
Thanks!
Bonnaroo additions!!! Super pumped over Futurebirds right now...Actually I'm sideways with excitement. Oh and Henson Alternative Stuffed and Unstrung + MMJ = MMJ finally doing something with these crazy muppets. I'm calling it now!

I think you're right...If the muppets are there, how could they not incorporate them A) into their main show or B) into a separate show?
This news + additions + upcoming show fever has pushed me over the edge. Looks like I'll be joining you kind folks for Bonnaroo take ten (once I get paid on Monday)!!! Today just went from :-\ to :D, and will surely end in

And MMJ/Jim just happened to tweet this today....coincidence?
Dizzy Gillespie on The Muppet Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIvCJC8oAIE#)
Dr. Teeth's band is sounding tight!
I think this week we will also find out that Carl has a solo show at Bonnaroo. He would be a great afternoon cafe act or solar stage act.
are there more artist additions this week? I've notices that the line up is still very short but I don't know how they'll go about the rest of the addditions

Time to make lemonade  Look at all the incredible LN acts you can see! Think of the possible muppets collaboration, possible Carl solo show!
If they're not getting a late night set...this means they're getting a headlining main stage right???
Fuck SCI taking that coveted spot...
But one thing we can say is that MMJ has never played the same time slot/stage twice at Roo. Every time they graduate.

Even though some people will argue that they aren't a headliner (because they're not in the top 3 acts listed) I'd consider them as headliners.
Jim apparently told someone at a Louisville show (not MMJ show but Carl and band members playing) that they would be on at 8-10 before Arcade Fire. To me, that says MMJ and Arcade Fire are co-headlining that night since that's the slot that regular headliners usually take.
I'm pumped to be able to see the band in a huge field with tons of fans. Should be a big audience and I bet they gain a lot of new fans.

J RODDY JUST GOT ADDED
5 weeks to go. Can't wait for the webcast on the 31st, should be a gret warm up!
I'm so stoked for Louisville on the 31st, I'd forgotten about Bonaroo and how it seems to bring out the best in the boys. I'm opting to stay at a hotel nearby, rather than be stuck in a tent for dietary purposes. I've never been to Roo before, any info on navigating around and where to find other MMJ fans would be so appreciated. 24 DAYS UNTIL CIRCUITAL IN LOUISVILLE!!

The schedule is up. MMJ playing from 8-10 on the main stage before Arcade Fire. Two hours (plus an hour inbetween MMJ and Arcade Fire) for some rocking good times.
Where is the Bonnaroo schedule up?
Sorry.....I was under the impression it was posted on their website as well. Members of Inforoo.com found it yesterday and then it was taken down/blocked but some got screenshots.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/34070329@N08/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/34070329@N08/)
Disappointing that we only get 2 hours of MMJ this year. Should have been Arcade Fir first, they only have a 1 1/2 hour set anyways, put MMJ after and let 'em go all night. Fuck.
Now it's officially up.
http://mindreader.bonnaroo.com/grid.html#full (http://mindreader.bonnaroo.com/grid.html#full)
And MMJ gets two hours but there will be an hour of space inbetween so they'll probably go a little over. They'll rock faces.
Set time video announcement is also up - Bonnaroo set time announcement (http://vimeo.com/23494951)
Does anyone think they might play all of Circuital at the show? Kind of odd how they specifically mention it in the video. Whatever they do, it's gonna be an incredible way to spend sunset on Friday night at Roo. :D
Interesting that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Del McCoury set kinda overlaps with MMJ. I figured the PHJB were a lock to play with MMJ -- though I guess it's still somewhat possible for the latter half of the show.
So what's everyone's plans for Friday regarding holding down a spot for Jacket Friday?? I was realllly hoping to see Jack White with Wanda Jackson, but it's just uncomfortably close to Jacket time.
I know the sound is good all throughout the field in front of the main stage, but the pit is a no-brainer....are y'all camping out at the mainstage, say, 2.5-3 hrs before Jacket set time??
Yep, plan on getting to the main stage right after Grace Potter

We're driving all the way from Virginia and the only band we care about at all is The Jacket. We'd love to meet up with any of you who'd like to connect and get right up front as a friend mob. I mean, as much as any other band is intriguing, seeing the band with a cell of brothers and sisters is the way to go!
Friday is going to be epic.
Sharon Van Etten -> Ben Solle -> Phosphorescent -> Bella Fleck -> Warren Haynes -> Decemberist -> Jacket -> Arcade Fire -> Big Boi -> Ratatat.
I don't get why Arcade Fire only has an hour and a half set...I bet they go late. I hope they go late. I hope Jacket goes late and then I hope Arcade Fire plays all night...

Most people have been saying they usually play for a little longer than an hour and a half so I guess that makes sense to schedule them like that rather then give them 2 hours and force them to stretch into it. I think people said they played around 100 minutes at Coachella so yea I'm guessing they'll go over their scheduled time here. It's going to be a great night.
I'll be camping out at The What Stage from 3:15 until 12:30 am. This will be my 5th time seeing GP&TN (first time at Roo 06), 12th time seeing The Decemberists, and 13th time seeing MMJ (first at Roo 05). I'll miss a bunch of good stuff (Warren Haynes, Ray Lamontagne and others), but life (festivals) is about sacrifice.
Just saw the schedule and most say...a little disappointing? :'( After witnessing '06 and '08 late night sets, the only thing I can see them do is a another timeless late night or a well deserved headlining spot. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they will still kill it, but would of rathered a different time slot. Felt like the Black Keys got the shaft as well. They would be the two bands i would want to see the most and think both deserve there seniority based late night. Well at least instead of lil' Wayne? or Emimem getting a special 11pm time slot? Didn't they learn their lesson rearranging the schedule for Kanye?!
Black Keys were LN last year and MMJ we've known for wuite some time wouldn't be LN. I'll be rolling into the What stage lawn for the Decemberists and continually moving up to get close for MMJ. I plan on trying to get into the pit for both MMJ and AF.
My schedule for Friday looks like this:
Graveyard
Phosphorescent
Decemberists
MMJ
AF
Black Angels
Pretty Lights (Just the first 15-20 minutes)
Shpongle
Not a busy day in the afternoon just because it's a long weekend and it'll be nice to have a break during the hottest part of the day.
I'd never heard Arcade Fire before last night (because I refuse to listen to the radio. Blech) and can't believe how great they are! Rocking! Thanks to you all for giving me the incentive to take a closer look and listen. Friday is going to be incredible!

Arcade Fire are absolutely phenomenal live. Do yourself a favor and stick around for them.
For those of you who have never been to ROO (as I'm sure most of you have) the Main Stage has a barricade partitioning off the front section of the GA pitt. Every time a band finishes their set, security clears out the front section. There is a waiting area, generally to the right of this barricade, where you can wait to gain access to the front pitt. When I went to ROO' in 2009, I found out about this secret on Sunday afternoon. A friend of mine, who was second row at David Byrne (and who played on the Which Stage), secured third row for Phish, who started just after David Byrne.
If you intend on camping out in front of the Main Stage all day, it is simply impossible. If you plan on gaining a great spot for My Morning Jacket (like myself), your best method would be wait in the "waiting area" during Grace Potter's set. But if you are a huge Grace Potter fan, and want to be in the front area, you will have to exit the main area, and wait in line again. I know this concept it stupid, but it stops people from camping out in the main stage all day.
Hope this helps all of you!
Thanks for the tip! But using this method, wouldn't it be best to be in the waiting area during the Decemberists set? You mentioned Grace Potter, but there is a band in between. Thanks!

You are indeed a WONDERFULMAN! Thank you so much for this info, as this is my first ROO and I really don't have a clue about anything other than I want to be with other Jacket fans up front for the show. I'll be in that waiting area. Hopefully I'll see you there and be able to shake your hand sir. :dankk2:

From first glance, this might be exactly my plans for Friday as well. From Graveyard all the way to Pretty Lights (Haven't listened to Shpongle, so maybe I need to) but this set of bands, with MMJ as the main event, will be phenomenal. The one single band I'm most excited about besides MMJ would be Black Angels. Can't wait to catch them live.
Louisiana Fairytale will be screening in the cinema tent.
Followed by a performance!
Fuck yes.
So now the question becomes -- for someone who has never ventured into the cinema tent, just how do you go about doing that? Any tickets or lines or anything like comedy or do you just waltz on in?
LONNNGGGG LINES cause people like to get in the AC. get there early!
and the fact that jim and others will be performing in there also, you better get there extra early. should be good, can't wait to hear a report.
It depends on what's showing. I've always walked right in *shrug* but if the performance is well advertised, there might be a line.
Highly recommend everyone who's going to Roo to check out this doc. Danny Clinch is a fascinating dude in his own right, and the film stars our very own Sassbox ;) It was definitely the highlight of my SXSW this year.

maybe I'm thinking of the comedy tent? i've never been in either, I just know I approached one, saw the line, and said fuck that
I'm in on this!! The second showing EVER? What an opportunity...
It conflicts with Warren, and I think a good bit of people will go see Lewis Black at the same time too. Lets fill that front row :D
Does anyone think that the boys will hang around for the entire weekend? In 2009, one year the band didn't perform, I spotted Patrick rocking out side stage for TV on the Radio. The next day my friends and I saw Patrick casually walking through the crowd during Wilco. I got up and ran a 50 yard dash just to shake his hands. Prob my best memory of 09'.

That'd be awesome if they hung around. The Sunday SuperJam certainly needs a drummer...
The jacket / arcade fire back to back is what this whole festival is about to me.
Does anyone know what the process is for getting into the pit. I have only gone in on very lightly crowded shows. Do they clear it out between sets, or once you have a spot you are locked in if you dont leave.
I assume there is no way to go to the bathroom / food and get in and out of the pit area.
I will more than likely be looking to try to lock down a place where I can set a blanket right behind the pit area before the decembrist and just holding this down for the rest of the sunday main stage.
Ill have four to five in my group but would luv to have a big spot next to likeminded fans that can help each other by watching thier spots, locking down other spots, etc.
If anyone is interested in meeting up shoot me a text referecning MMJ bonnaroo 515.255.1784

I'm out. :'( The same stomach problem that forced me to leave the Louisville show has gone into hyper drive and now I'm facing surgery or 2 weeks on a "no solid foods" diet to heal my damaged g.I. tract. And if that's the case, Chicago is out too. I'm dying inside right now. I'm missing Bonaroo, missed 1/2 of Louisville (which I could have made it through, but my friends desire to leave made the choice easier) and now Chicago and maybe Minneapolis. I waited all year, bought all my tickets and airfares. And now this happens. :'( Ever seen a grown man cry? I can't even listen to CIRCUITAL without screaming and throwing things. I wanna rip out my stomach and stomp on it.

glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. Following your story is a roller-coaster. You should have your own reality show.

Thanks friends! Ill pass on the reality show tho. And really.... who wants to watch that tragedy? I'm glad its now seemingly on the way to being over. No pain all day today and stocked up for a buzzed night of buds, bonaroo and lots of damn good soup. Looks like ill make Chicago next week after all and I'm bringing something the whole band signed and just sent to me to contribute to the roll call charity auction!

Gotta hand it to ya Mr. YYac, you do manage to find everything out there on the interwebs. ;)

The movie was really great and I was glad that I got to see PHJB perform a couple tunes after since I wasn't able to make their full set since I was waiting to get in the pit for MMJ. I was quite upset that Jim didn't show up though!
anu! i was at movie & show but didn't see you. did you also see mavis? (that set she played in 2007 was the highlight of the weekend for me.)
friend of mine sent me the NY Times article about Bonnaroo from tuesday's paper: giant photo under the headline is of jim playing his acoustic guitar. the author of the article showed a lot of love to mmj's set & to PHJB, describing them as "Bonnaroo's binding glue."
i didn't find the fest-wrap article online, but here is a write-up re: mmj's show on saturday:

Yvon! I am so sorry I missed you! Mavis had one of my favorite sets other than the Jacket!
Here's something like a proper review:
Field of Dreams: the Jacket's Victory Dance
As dusk quickly approached, though, we found ourselves on the crowded walk towards What Stage to grab a spot for the Jacket's 8pm slot, seeking a particular piece of lawn where we could spread out and dance. Leaving the pit and the several rows after it to the patient folks willing to press, we really got a sense of the vastness of the main Bonnaroo venue by laying our blanket halfway back, with the VIP section just behind us and the waxing moon above. Seeing this band for about the tenth time brought layers and levels of emotion based on how their music meets me on a spiritual plane and in sheer anticipation of how they'd weave in the new songs that I'd been listening to for about ten days since Circuital had been released.
The opening one-two of "Victory Dance" and "Circuital" perfectly tones the crowd to connect with the new tunes – from the spine-chilling trumpet solo that kicked off the set as though "Taps" were playing in the belly of our common memory to Jim's otherworldly wail at the end of "Victory Dance" to the comforting way the new record's title track tracks our cellular responsiveness to the Jacket's versatile jangle and sparkle.
Immediately switching gears to three soaring hits from 2005's Z, the setlist immediately attracted anyone who wasn't already reeling towards bliss. "Off The Record" opens slowly before slinking into lyric and hook and a danceable refrain that had the mass of thousands grooving along joyfully; then, suddenly, at midsong we meet the kind of whacked and wicked jam that makes the Jacket the Jacket, that stretches every player in the band to follow its tangly riffs into the manna of meaning as Bo Koster's keyboards carry us to the misty mountaintops of rock and roll bliss. Followed by the fierce glory of "Gideon" and the playful abandon of "Anytime," the party was fully underway, with James then greeting the "ocean of humanity" by announcing the occasion as an entirely surreal, mind-blowing, and "magical honor."
At Roo, the everyfan's festival, many bands forget their roots as fans, arrive just in time to do their set, and leave with similar haste. That's not the case with My Morning Jacket who have been like pillars of the whole Bonnaroo project since its earliest years, always hanging out to catch other artists and really taking things to the next level with late-night sets of legend in 2006 and 2008. For two hours on Friday night, we got to give the Jacket their due by giving them such a premier place in the schedule, and the Jacket just poured the love back out on us.
Even though only a handful of tracks from 2008's excellent but polarizing Evil Urges have remained in the set, the journey that injects "Smokin' from Shootin'" into a snippet from "Run Thru" (a 2003 track) and then collapses into the arms of "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream, Part Two" undoubtedly torques listeners into a state of rotation and levitation that leaves little doubt that this band has no qualms about bending the tilt of the universe for the time that it's onstage each night.
Intentionally or inadvertently, My Morning Jacket give a ton of credibility to the narrative that the moment of Circuital signals a retro movement all about returning to the band's roots by playing more songs from the 2003 pre-breakout album It Still Moves than they do from either Z or Evil Urges. And even though I did miss hearing "It Beats for You," "Wonderful," Librarian," "Dondante," and "Evil Urges," to name a few, neither the focus on the new album nor on the older, jammier jams from earlier in the century in any way diminished the devastating beauty of the entire evening for me.
From their funkiest and freakiest with newer tracks like "Highly Suspicious" or "Holdin' On To Black Metal" to the culminating guitar-god pyrotechnics of "Dancefloors" diving into "One Big Holiday," My Morning Jacket made my night and my weekend with what may have been one of their career's most important sets to date. For me, it meant watching and dancing from a vaster vantage point, from a different distance and angle, from a more mature but no less appreciative perspective. As far as I can tell, the latest album embraces all these added textures in what is already a many layered rock and roll masterpiece of a musical vocation.
