I'd like more explanation into Cobra, though I can imagine them just doing this:
One day, we were sitting around watching Rikki Tikki Tavi, the ol' Chuck Jones cartoon based on the Kipling novel, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rikki-Tikki-Tavi) and then we played a show at the Rud and then [begin Cobra]

call back!
They will probably be doing a few songs from their new album. When Springsteen did Storytellers a few years back, he did songs from his upcoming or newly released album. If he did 10 songs, for example, it was like 4 from new album, and 6 from all the other stuff. I'm guessing it will be the same formula for MMJ.
This whole list needs to be given to them... priceless
Why do you think you're going to hell?
What's so real about O?
How do you know?
How can I know?
Do you ever dream a little dream of me?
Where is the swimming pool on the cover of 'Tennessee Fire'?
What's the bear thing, anyway?
Will you finally tell us what the hell the lyrics to 'Cobra' are?
Who are Joe, Paul and Catherine?
Who's Neil Young?
Will you be there when I die :'(

guys! c'mon you deviants; it's more about letting out the rage from someone who usually just bottles it all in. it's the allegoric fetus, the yet to be born, yet to be experienced person who these lyrics are refering to and attempting to provoke them to just be human and concede to their inner desires. or at least that's my take :)

you gotta keep in mind storytellers is only an hour long and it's VH1 which has commercials. so maybe 45mintues of music/storytelling will be released. these shows are notoriously hard to get. now that everything is digital they probably don't have to stop to change tapes at least so I suppose there is a chance the whole thing gets released some day but I'm betting most of this show will never be seen or heard again after tonight. once in a life time shit going down tonight.

Oh HELL YES! This makes me so happy. YAY BLUESKY!
She DID get inside..it was something to see..Lots to tell.
Jim had lots to say, at first I think he was wishing he could just play music, but the more he talked, seemed like the more comfortable he got. Lots of funny moments, I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that he got emotional when he was talking about Dondante, it was really heartwarming. I had heard that story before, but to hear him tell it like that was really something to behold. I guess VH1 asks all the artists to do one cover song at least, so they did Lullabies, Legends and Lies.
Somehow Brooke and I (and Steam Engine) thought we were walking to the back of the line and ended up cutting the line and got in first..no idea, but no one questioned anything. Then I was so excited that I accidentally headbutted Brooke, we thought maybe she had a slight concussion but she turned out to be fine.
The whole sitting standing thing was weird at first. We would sit when Jim would tell a story, then stand when the song came on (except for Wonderful). They played a new song called "Moving" and ended up having to play it twice because the audio was bad or something, another time Jim asked if he could start over with Wonderful.
I don't want to say too much. Just wanted to report back. I'll try to remember all the stories. Thanks again, Brooke. It was something I'll never forget. Oh yes, I got a setlist, BUT the setlist I was eyeing all night was a setlist for Jim that had this notes for his stories on there. Another girl saw me looking at it and said "Don't even think about it, it's mine." So right when the show ended, she beat me to it (she was closer in proximity on the other side of the studio) and they ended up telling her she couldn't have it. now THAT would have been a collectible..

How was the new song?!!?
AHHHHHHH-MAZING !!!!! i still can't believe that 1.) we got to go and 2.) we sat in the freaking front .. just a few feet from jim :o this was our view...

christine did a great little recap and i'm exhausted and starving so .. full post tomorrow
Unbelievable that I got in, really did not think it was going to happen!!! :D
Moving Away, as I think Jim said was about moving for love and leaving ones you love and and ones you don't love. It was really amazing to hear them in such a small studio. You really could pick up all the details in the sounds. When they had to rerecord it  Jim said that trying to recreate that same feeling again was like telling a really funny joke and having everyone tell you to tell the exact same joke again. It's a country waltz.
Hope Brooke's feeling alright now ???

Oh yes...I like the sound of that (or how the sound of that would sound ???)! I look forward to hearing the other stories y'all have to tell about the stories.
So glad y'all shared that experience :) Thanks for reporting back so soon!

rumor has it bluesky charmed her way inside .....

2 things: what's the Dondante story? And this is off subject but at the appilachian vox show in Lexington I snagged a set list with Jims notes on how to play the App Vox songs.
I can't wait for this thing to air! I'm sitting here at work in Bama thinking about how cool it would have been to be at tonight's taping. Im so glad Jason and Penny got to attend. Congrats to you too bluesky! I know if I had tried to go without a ticket I would have been form tackled and sent back to alabama. It's gonna be great to hear some detailed reviews of this thing. I love the fact that the new song has a country flare to it. I was really hoping they would go this way with some of the songs on the new album after the statements were made about the album sounding "kind of dirty" and all of that other stuff. I'm sure they are still gonna rock our faces off with some new epic masterpiece of a song...Oh and guess what else just hit me? It's under 3 months until THE HANGOUT!! This year is about to get gooddddddddddddddd!!!
PENNYRAIN getting competition for most coveted setlist is SO lol..... ;D
just reading all the comments makes me happy. must have been a truly special night.
woah - sounds pretty dreamy for sure! i'm torn between wanting to know every detail RIGHT NOW and biding my time til the air date so as not to spoil the surprises. will tiny morsels tide me over til then??? :D
just looking @ the setlist as it was coming thru on jason's fb & then to see the complete list from penny's pic sent my head spinning. i'm drooling over what these stories were...are...errrrr...will be. i got emotional thinking about dondante...
thanks for all the updates gang! so happy that you got to be part of such a special event. this most certainly is one to tell the grandkids. hope to hear some inside scoop stuffs soooooon. see ya when you come back down from the clouds :)
I would have given my right arm to see that little exchange between Penny and her setlist-grabbing nemesis. ;D Soooooo happy for you ladies!
So, Jim is looking out at this audience, with two young ladies in front, eyes glazed, drool from mouth's corner, and the slightest hint of bruised forehead. :D
I hope you two are okay following the noggin knockin'. ;)
Sure it was an epic moment. Val, nice score slipping in.
I'd love to see pics, setlist, etc. since I'm out of the Facebook and texting loop.
I'm torn as to how much detail we should hear before the show airs. Maybe you can write down memorable moments to share once the thing is broadcast to cover stuff that didn't make the final cut.

Jesus I can't even process all of this right now. Val! So happy you got in! And being in the front row and scoring a set list...seems like the stars aligned for you guys. :)
Would have loved to witness the threat to throw down over that set list. Does she even know who Penny is? ;D
So was that setlist exactly what was played, except another Moving Away after Smokin From Shootin? Or was it after Wonderful?

Indeed, Seth. :D ;) :)
That was not the setlist as actually played - Instead of playing Look at You off the break they replayed Movin' Away again. I think the rest is accurate.
Also just before Lullabies,Legends, and Lies.. they played "26 Second Song" off the Shel Silverstein Tribute album.
the setlist is exactly as listed except the 2nd take of Movin' Away took the place of Look At You which is too bad b/c i really really would like to hear what he had to say about Look At You

exactly Johnny--i don't wanna tell too many stories and give anything away. i will say that the Dondante moment was by far the most emotional moment---he really couldn't hold it in when he was talking about his friend, and how he and pat had been friends since 4th grade with this kid...(more to the story but i won't say anything more).....i had heard or read that what that song was about (as have most of you) but to hear it live was something else..
the best parts of everything was just hearing the stories
really wasn't about the music
oh and Ghosts--the new song "moving" or "moving away" was really a testament to jim's voice, to me it was like his master's voice fused with groove (i'm bad at describing songs but lots of HIGH notes) and before the song, jim talked about having a relationship on the road and trying to decide if one person should move to be with the other person (i assume his situation in the recent couple years) or whether you should just leave it as is/and how traumatic moving can be. i really identified with it as i've had distance relationships where the big question was is it worth it, should i move there to be with that person, and i just happen to be moving this weekend---and jim also talked about how traumatic it always is..moving TO or FROM something..but no matter what there is HOPE in something new..
Don't lie, you just identified because each time a show ends, so does your 3 hour relationship!
So what was the atmosphere? mellow? Was it like full-out songs or more stripped? OBH was a typical OBH? Did Dondante bring the chills?
the atmosphere was surprisingly mellow .. at least alot of tapings i've been to have been very controlled and rigid. we were allowed to stand or sit, whichever we wanted and were told that above all else HAVE A BLAST. um yeah that won't be hard ;) the songs were pretty rocking / full-out .. OBH was typical .. power slides and all were present .. there was cape'age. the one thing there wasn't was talking from any of the other guys .. all stories and chat were from jim.
Carl piped in after Jim described the process of writing Circuital. Jim said they were recording in a big gymnasium and all of a sudden Carl "ripped" the "best solo ever written" and after "closer examination" it "was indeed the best solo ever written". Carl said something but was drowned out by laughter from what Jim said.
The atmosphere was great, despite the fact that it was kind of an anti-concert with all the time between songs. Even the Live on Letterman taping felt much more like a concert. Altogether an amazing experience. Dondante was the highlight for me.

As THE sole songwriter for MMJ, I suppose that makes sense, but too bad. I've always enjoyed rare opportunities (in person or in interviews) to hear from the other guys about their role in MMJ, as well as their own music. Still, they would have less direct insight into the genesis of MMJ songs.
Thanks for being our eyes and ears without too much detail.

Sounds like a great night....Congrats to all who were chosen. Did they mention a potential airing date ? (if already stated sorry did not see)
Br00ke that is an awesome avatar!
Did they mention any more details about the upcoming album?
Not a whole lot about the new album, except I do remember him saying that "So we just got done recording our new album" - so it could be finished or in finial mixing stages.
They did say that it felt very circular to them, as if they were going back to something. They mentioned that before they played circuital.
gah .. i'm still reeling. i just wrote an e.mail to a friend that wanted details and it took me right back. i can't wait for this to air .. no matter how dorky i look rocking out in the front (yeah i'm a little nervous about seeing myself on tv, eek!) .. our faces were worn out at the end from all the smiling. i wish you all were there (http://www.thejamgirlz.com/phorums/images/smiles/049.gif)

Nice recap for us without giving it all away. Penny thank you for the text updates! I am so glad you two got to go and nice charm Bluesky, not surprised in the least. Did you give them chocolate and a smile? :)
Can't wait to see this air and bug you guys for the details they will surely have to edit out. Sounds incredibly emotional, layers pulled, words spoken and hearts open.
this sounds so awesome. can't wait to see this. hope nothing ends up on the cutting room floor!!
what is the story behind dondante? was this mentioned in an earlier interview?
I don't know if he had mentioned it in an interview before, but I think it was well known that the song was about a friend of his / former bandmate who took his own life. I won't recap what he said yesterday, so you can enjoy it on the show, but it was very emotional and very beautiful.

Great stuff people, SO happy for you guys just getting in, but getting up front even! As for the Dondante story, I consider that part of the public domain by now, and now I see TSarge spilling the specific beans -- anyone seeking more on it can surely find it in old threads.
Well I didn't spill too much!! That information could be found on the forums, on google, or even on Wikipedia.
Can you guys say where this was now? For my records... (name of theatre/studio or whatever...)

I say spill all the beans if you want to. :) No one needs to read this thread if they don't want to learn too much and it's ridiculous to set arbitrary lines as to how much to divulge.
Great stuff! Also sooo awesome that Bluesky got in! Hooray Val!

what is the story behind dondante? was this mentioned in an earlier interview?
It will be cut. They'll probably televise 4-5 songs and then show random clips coming back in from commercials.
People who worked for VH1 and the casting company told me the following:
They selected 30 entries (60 people total) out of "a few thousand responses" they received during the first twelve hours
The episode is scheduled to air on June 3rd.
They filmed interviews with the band before they let us in to the studio where they asked some of the questions submitted by the 30 winning entries.
Can I please submit a heartfelt request -- no, more like an anguished PLEA -- for all of the details? The show that airs will only be 40 minutes long. The taping was several hours. All of those precious details that won't show up on air are, right now, leaking out of your lovely brains. They'll be lost forever.
Surely, people who don't want spoilers can just steer clear of this thread, and then after the show they can check in and see what went on at the taping that didn't make it on air. It's a perfect solution.
I tried and prayed and made ritual sacrifices to get tickets to this show, to no avail. Please, please -- if you could find it in your heart to detail everything you remember as an offering to those of who didn't get in, I'd really really appreciate it.
In particular, I'd love to hear anything / everything about the new song. Do you remember any lyrics? A general tone? I don't know a country waltz -- is that upbeat? sad? What's the funniest thing you remember? What are random odd details that you remember?
Really, I'll take anything. And I sincerely hope I'm not coming off as pushy -- I don't mean to be. I'm just full of regret and jealousy :) ;)
Thanks y'all
This is my Gmail Convo with Mr. Reid Wilkof who was front and center at the taping last night. Enjoy.

me: im reading the forum now..
what did they talk about?
did they tell the stories of their songs...?
what the fuck is Dondante about?
Reid: about their friend
and that changed the mood for the rest of the night
he was in tears
Patrick was in tears
whole room weeping
the stories were not really stories as they were these tangents of thought
and belief
very spiritual
me: kinda spiritual?
9:20 AM
Reid: but not preachy or religious
me: totally
Reid: just openness
of life
and caring
compassion
honestly if this guy started a cult I would be there
me: he has started a cult...JOIN THE FORUM!
Reid: we sat next to two girls who are two frorum heads
me: Penny?
Reid: Casey, we were 4 feet from them. there wasnt a stage it was studio so we were on the floor with them
definitely got a lot of air time
me: did you look nice?
Reid: casual
so hot
if I took my sweater off it would have been bad news came home pits were soaking
me: hahahaha
how was that new song "moving away?'
Reid: ohh man they had to do it twice
me: i heard...why?
Reid: something happened with the taping one of the computers fucked up or something they did it
he fucking killed it
after that song production manager comes up and was like we got to do it again
Jim is like I cant I cant do that again
he poured it out on this take

they did it again at the end
the other new song
is AWESOME
me: the one the had to do again, what did that one sound like?
Reid: slow ballad
I wanted to leave during its about leaving a loved one and trying to have a long distance relationsip
and it not working
shit I just cant hear right now
whole time I was thinking about that fucking girl
even dreamt about her last night
me: nice, Jim tappin into your psyche
Reid: really has
I feel different after last night
made me think of culture and our reasons for even being on this planet
the world is shit
people treat each other like shit
from day to day to our government

Hmmm. Some of us will be otherwise engaged on June 3rd- Wakarusa and Mountain Jam.
I know when Springsteen did Storytellers a few years back, they also released a DVD of the whole session later in the year after it aired. Not saying they will definitely do this for MMJ, but there's a precedent.
Thanks Funky
For those who want to hear all the details of last night's taping, the simple solution is to create a brand new thread with the subject VH1 Storytellers SPOILERS. All the juicy details can be put in there, and then people who don't want to be spoiled can stay away from it.
ok some details/
WARNING SPOILERS? .. fragmented memories and obviously i can't quote what the man said b/c i wasn't aloud to record it and b/c we were up front i couldn't sit there with a notepad like i had hoped though i'm glad as hell i was sitting where i was ;)
some e.mails i sent a friend this morning below .. this one RE: dodante
Quote.. it was a very emotional moment. jim said he didn't want to tell that story but that it was kind of unavoidable. after every time they play dodante jim always disappears backstage for a few moments .. this is to go say hi to his friend that's gone. he said there was a happy ending though, that he had this dream where they all went to heaven and his friend was there helping them get checked in, showing them the ropes and all .. it was quite humorous, the way he told it was (trying to lift the moment back up maybe). anyway .. he said he believes that we go on after we die and that his friend is doing well. that he believes if we have a tough go of it on this earth there is somewhere else for us to go and be happy, taken care of, etc..
In A Dream I Saw You Walkin - Like A Kid Alive And Talkin - That Was You.
On The Streets You Were Policing- In The Classroom You Were Teaching- That Was You.
To The One I Now Know Most - I Will Tell Them Of Your Ghost Like A Thing -
That Never, Ever Was.
And All That Ever Mattered Will Some Day Turn Back To Batter Like A Joke.
Behind Thin Walls You Hid Your Feelins - Take Four Legs To Make A Ceilin Like A Thing.
In A Dream I Saw You Walkin, With Your Friends Alive And Talking - That Was You.
Well I Saw It In Your Movement - And Even Though You Never Knew It -
Well, I Knew, Just How Sweet It Could Be - If You'd Never Left These Streets.
You Had Me Worried! So Worried - That This Would Last...
But Now I'm Learning - Learning That This Will Pass...
there were so many things .. it was so amazing. the things he said about the songs. alot of them made so much sense, feelings and thoughts the songs had given me and then for him to reiterate it.
and RE: OBO
Quotethat was another neat thing .. what OBH is about. when they were starting out they would send demo's/packages out and they would try to make them look really wacky so they'd get noticed. jim talked about the package he sent to darla records and how he pretended darla was a girl and he was writing a love letter (to the record label). talking about how it worked and they got the call from california .. from darla records. and talked about the beastie boys .. "no sleep till brooklyn" .. when they were young they were like yeah i just want life to be one big holiday. fun times all the time .. sex, partying, rock n' roll, bustling down the highway in rosie (the band's van from early days)
Wakin up feelin good and limber
When the telephone it ring
Was a bad man from california
Tellin of a stone he'd bring
And of better days
From this town, we'd escape
If we holler loud and make our way
We'd all live one big holiday
So we listened and up the river
And recorded all the sounds
Was some shakin and some record playin
All the leather kids were loud
also RE: doing something you love / something that puts you in that zone .. talking about how he knows people his age that have no interests .. people saying "gah we're so old" .. this coming after mention about how fast things are these days .. everyone on their iphones .. people becoming so absorbed that they don't have things they love .. they don't have things that put them in that zone (i.e. when he's raging on stage .. i.e. when i'm raging at a show) or they don't have hobbies or learn how to do things (play tennis well .. play the guitar well .. etc.). and how he knows people that are in their 70's and so young .. living life. this is where Wonderful was played.
QuoteIt matters to me
Took a long time to get here
If it would have been easy
I would not have cared
Like a tropical forest
Like a cop on the beat
When all is in order
You get lost in the heat
I feel so wonderful, wonderful,
Wonderful the way I feel
I feel so wonderful, wonderful,
Wonderful the way I feel
Doesn't matter to me
I could take it or leave it
I can learn from way back when
And still live right now
With the sun on my shoulders
And the wind at my back
I will never grow older
At least not in my mind
I feel so wonderful, wonderful,
Wonderful the way I feel
I feel so wonderful, wonderful,
Wonderful the way I feel
So wonderful
Wonderful the way I feel
I feel so wonderful, wonderful,
Wonderful the way I feel
I'm going where there ain't no fear
I'm going where the spirit is real
I'm going where the living is easy and the people are kind
A new state of mind
I'm going where there ain't no police
I'm going where there ain't no disease
I'm going where there ain't no need to escape from what is
Only spirits at ease
this was so special to me (and to everyone else i'm sure) .. a moment where that is what i got from the song ever since the 1st time i heard it and to hear him say yes .. this is what it's about (more or less). love love love !!!
i could go on and on and on and on forever but i really haven't done any work today b/c i'm still just in this cloud of awesomeness. i'll be back though .. gotta talk about GIDEON !!!
Cool transcript. I love Jim's reply of "I can't do that again". That sums their live shows up in a nutshell!
I also reallly love your "did you look nice?" question. ;D That reminds of the scene from Swingers when the pizza guy is at the door and VV is asking, "is he clean, is he clean - is he brown". ;D
Thanks Brooke! I for one am happy to get all the details, since the show will be edited and all. And this really just confirms a lot of what I always guessed JJ and the boys (and the songs) stood for.
Which brings me to the set list showdown, wtf? ;D ;D
Sounds like the Chelsea Handler wanna-be that tried to steal my spot on the balcony rail at T5. So rude. But I guess karma got her in the end. I do think that Jim's mama (or someone close to him) should have that set list, but that is just me.
man. this really has my psyched on this year and the new album. best band ever.

This is my Gmail Convo with Mr. Reid Wilkof who was front and center at the taping last night. Enjoy.
Reid: I am trying to find words to describe last night to you one of the most powerful music experiences of my life
me: im reading the forum now..
what did they talk about?
did they tell the stories of their songs...?
what the fuck is Dondante about?
Reid: about their friend
and that changed the mood for the rest of the night
he was in tears
Patrick was in tears
whole room weeping
the stories were not really stories as they were these tangents of thought
and belief
very spiritual
me: kinda spiritual?
9:20 AM
Reid: but not preachy or religious
me: totally
Reid: just openness
of life
and caring
compassion
honestly if this guy started a cult I would be there
me: he has started a cult...JOIN THE FORUM!
Reid: we sat next to two girls who are two frorum heads
me: Penny?
Reid: Casey, we were 4 feet from them. there wasnt a stage it was studio so we were on the floor with them
definitely got a lot of air time
me: did you look nice?
Reid: casual
so hot
if I took my sweater off it would have been bad news came home pits were soaking
me: hahahaha
how was that new song "moving away?'
Reid: ohh man they had to do it twice
me: i heard...why?
Reid: something happened with the taping one of the computers fucked up or something they did it
he fucking killed it
after that song production manager comes up and was like we got to do it again
Jim is like I cant I cant do that again
he poured it out on this take
on the first one
they did it again at the end
the other new song
is AWESOME
me: the one the had to do again, what did that one sound like?
Reid: slow ballad
I wanted to leave during its about leaving a loved one and trying to have a long distance relationsip
and it not working
shit I just cant hear right now
whole time I was thinking about that fucking girl
even dreamt about her last night
me: nice, Jim tappin into your psyche
Reid: really has
I feel different after last night
made me think of culture and our reasons for even being on this planet
the world is shit
people treat each other like shit
from day to day to our government
to traditions about faith how those traditions treat people
makes you want to get away from everything and forget about it
I guess the whole band went to Lady Gaga the other night at MSG hilarious tweet pic of them
me: nice.
brb
got to shower
END CONVO
beautiful..
Beautiful indeed, so lovely, thanks for sharing! :)

I know when Springsteen did Storytellers a few years back, they also released a DVD of the whole session later in the year after it aired. Not saying they will definitely do this for MMJ, but there's a precedent.
Oooh, that'd be so nice! :D
Thanks everyone for sharing stories/details, love reading it! ♥ :)
Thanks for all the info on the show last. I'm glad everyone had a great time and it was really nice meeting everyone. Unfortunately they didn't have enough room for just one more person. There was only two of us that didn't get in and the super nice girl who was in charge of the guest list came over to me and said how sorry she was I couldn't get in. She said that she had pleaded with her boss to let me in but he wouldn't allow it, she actually looked more upset about it then I'm sure I did. Keep the details coming if you think of anything else and I'll see you all next time the band comes around. Now where the fuck are these tour dates I need something to look forward to.

great to meet you too :) after we found out val got in we were asking her about if you would get in .. sucks that it didn't work out man !!
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
(and a lot of paraphrasing, brevity and mixing up when he said what exactly as there was too much to remember right)
first story or tangent of thought was in relation to a long night that had eventually became morning "as long nights tend to do"... at which point, though he tries to eat healthy, even when he doesnt want to, he went in the refrigerator to grab a fresh box of eggs. and when he opened the lid the light in his kitchen somehow hit the eggs that got him thinking about the existence of life in all things be they eggs, leaves, people etc.. and how we all need to realize there is in all of us as there is in all things like leaves and eggs a core brilliant light linking us all (i am really paraphrasing here).
- wordless chorus
he then mentioned something about how we loves to read the onion and how sad it is we get our real news from that and the daily show, etc. but he said his favorite headline was "US department of Retro warns we are running out of retro"). he then got into the whole thing of how we constantly recycle the past and how this led to "we are the imitators, they are the innovators" but then he said FUCK THAT . WE need to be the innovators, and that we (not that just them as a band) need find our own identity in all of this and not just look to the past. so he changed the line!
i think at this point is when he started to talk about how in the early days he was learning his voice and how to sing he would admire those people who could hit those crazy high notes like shannon hoon (for the life of me i cant remember all the others he mentioned). and which is why he thinks he closes his eyes so much when he sings - he is trying to reach them "up there" so that they can help him.
- the way that he sings
he got into when they were first starting out they all decided the best thing to do was to go buy a van and hit the road. they found a beautiful 1989 dodge or something that was two-toned (just like tommy over there) in beige and white? i forget. and they called her "Rosie." they were all excited to go out and hit the road (or the "circuit" as so many people he'd talk to would refer to it). so one night when he was having dinner with his grandmother he told her about it. and she asked if they would be playing lots of bars, to which he replied well probably yes. to which she said "bars are dark and lonely."
Golden
talking of the new album, how they recorded it in a sweaty hot gym in kentucky and how the heat helped the sound. this album is much more round in its sound. where as the past few might have been triangular or "spikey" like how sprite or carbonated water feels on your tongue. this album is like milk on your tongue.
circuital
then he spoke about the universal feeling of what its like to have to move, especially the choice to move for someone else, but i think that was covered by others' posts.
new song - moving away
i dont need to explain the intro to dondante as i think its been explained way better than i could have done already, but just wanted to add one little part regarding his friend. when they were in the 4th grade his father got a new guitar (a fender strat?) and how he and his friend would stare at it as though it was the holy grail, then in a whisper he said "all the secrets are contained within"
dondante
getting into the religion / political thing here... the dangers of organized religions repeating the mistakes of the past, how kids at church are so bored but outside of it how they see everything for the first time and the joy in everything. also the frustrations they felt during the bush administration. how he kind of lets it all go with his scream at the end of the song.
gideon
i found this part pretty interesting as i really had no idea what the song was about... but here he gets into what its like to be in love and in a relationship but there just is something missing, something just isnt right, but you stay in the relationship anyway. you start looking at all the wrong things and how its kind of like running down an alley shooting at all the wrong things - like i dont deserve this, i could never have that - but you are never hitting on the right thing.
smoking from shootin
they took a little break then came back to do movin away again. mentioned something about how great the song was the first time but the computer was saying "ERROR ERROR 10001001011100" pretty funny. asked us all to put our hands in the air, even if its only metaphorically, to get the song right. and how being asked to do the song again is like telling a really funny joke and everyone around laughs out loud and then someone says - now tell us that same EXACT JOKE.
(something else he said, and i cant remember when it was but it was quite funny - hey you guys can stand or sit, do whatever you want really.... as long as you are standing)
he spoke about being invited to work on a shel silverstein tribute album in the famous MCA studios in nashville (at least i think thats what it was). and that since they were asked to do a cover for storytellers they thought this would be appropriate -
26 Second Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxGX9OeQCCo#ws)
the 26 second song... it was pretty funny.
then since this was storytellers they thought this was really the most appropriate cover - and it was great - lullabies, legends and lies.
i'm leaving out a lot but i think others have got it covered elsewhere - especially the part of the importance of finding that thing that helps bring you to that place where nothing else matters whether its sports, or music, or whatever that can help define you - because he's afraid all the reality tv, and texting, and video games are stealing the identities of the new generation. how he sounds like an old man saying that, but back in the day when they invented the telegram there was some old guy saying "its too fast! its gonna ruin everything!"
- he felt like a schoolteacher up there but he wasnt teaching anything (wrong jim. way wrong).
- he hates silence between songs because it gives people the opportunity to say something stupid, but pat wishes he could have just a few seconds of silence to let the songs settle before starting up again. and jim was like "no way! i'm making noise, youre making noise!!"
Great intro to OBH. "i'm going to read a quote, i wrote it down because i didnt want to get it wrong - on location, touring round the nation. beastie boys, always on vacation" and how no sleep till brooklyn is kind of how they thought it might be... just partying, travelling "fuckin shooting people!" whatever. it was pretty funny. but then he said the reality of the road turned out to be different of course, but that what it did to them in the end made them closer and better musicians and people which is a better result anyway.
ok folks i need to get back to work but was afraid if i didnt find someplace to jot this all down real quick i'd lose it....

YEAH !!! ;D ;D i forgot about that part. jim can be quiet serious and profound and really freaking hysterical too  great recap ... really great .. helped bring some of it back. i can't believe you can remember all of those details and have it so well written out. bravo !!
Thank you so much jesseyoungblood! :D
Hey Camp it was really nice to meet you outside, I am sorry that you didn't get in but hope now that we know you we see you at more shows! I really had a difficult time last night falling asleep my heart was still pounding fast at 2am. I feel super lucky to have been able to make it in to the show! Let's see if I can recall more details:
The early highlights were typical Jim at a show. He was abstract. He started talking about staying up late and being hungry but being a healthy person and still wanting bad food late at night. He was looking at a carton of eggs. And start to talk about how much life is in something like an egg, how it have potential to become a chicken or just be an egg an eaten. He mentioned how leaves were like that too, how all these things have life in them. He talked about meditation and how all things are connected. You got to love Jim!!!
The Way That He sings: Jim talked about wanting to channel the great singers like Roy Orbison and Marvin Gay. How they could hit the high notes and how he wanted to do that. How he looked for them when he would preform to guide him or something.
Moving Away is slow and LOVELY!!! He said it was about moving to be with someone and the hope that brings but also what you leave behind, those you love and the ones you want to leave. But that it is hopeful!!!
RE: movin' away ... i believe that one of the lyrics in the 1st bit is "anything for romance"
Jesseyoungblood great recap!!! :) More keeps coming back though it's hard to write. Meeting Brooke later so I am sure we will relive together!

Just found this!
My Morning Jacket Tape VH1 Storytellers Performance
VH1 Storytellers: My Morning Jacket will premiere on Friday, June 3rd but the network is looking ahead and sent over this tease:
My Morning Jacket front man Jim James declared "[touring] ain't what like the Beastie Boys promised on the song 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn'!" as they ripped into fan-favorite "One Big Holiday" in front of an intimate 200 member-audience last night at the taping of "VH1 Storytellers" at Metropolis Studios in New York, NY.
The hour-long "VH1 Storytellers" episode will feature the band performing a selection of songs including "Gideon," "Dondante," and a new track, "Wonderful," from their upcoming album. While introducing "Dondante," an emotional James told the story of the childhood friend who gave him his first guitar, formed their first band and collectively dreamed of appearing on "VH1 Storytellers." That friend has since died, but James explained that he was with them on stage in spirit as their boyhood dream came true last night.
James also spoke of hitting the road during the beginning of the band's burgeoning career. Prior to setting out on tour in a new van, James was spending Christmas with his grandmother, who asked James if he would be playing music in bars. When James responded with a yes, his grandmother said that "bars are dark and lonely places," a warning that turned into a key

and you ladies represent us well.
Can't wait for the rest on June 3rd. Question is, do I sit in the condo during Mountain Jam watching this? Guess it depends who's on stage at that time, and does the condo get VH1. :-\
i think it can be watched online / downloaded when you get home or even the day after !! maybe we can have a mini-viewing party @ the condo on saturday night after the shows end :)

Does the condo have a DVR? If so we can watch it post show every night, and over breakfast too. ;)
I think we should play the Penny Lane drinking game. Every time they show Penny during the broadcast we have to do a shot of makers or your beverage of choice for you non drinkers.

jeff - is the live viewing party also going to be the Circuital on vinyl listening party :) shoot, i may as well buy my mtn jam sun pass. if i don't now, i'll surely be talked into it that night ;D
Friday night June 3rd will be the Circuital Listening / Pre-Mt. Jam Party. Ordered the mega-cool-super-duper deluxe package and hoping it arrrives for that day as I would love to spint the Green Vinyl for all our "party guests". Otherwise, the download and burn to cd will have to do. Wanna join the party Liz?
Sorry I can be at Jeff's for the Circuital listening party or Storytellers premier viewing. I'll be hanging with Eric et al at Mt. Jam Friday. The condo owner says the VCR is out of order but has a DVD player. Any way to record the program to DVD? If so, bring it to Hunter. I could bring a VCR; if anyone still uses that techonology, bring the tape.

Finally watched this tonight--it's really goofy to be on tv..and embarrassing...but what a great experience! Thanks again, Brooke. We do definitely resemble Vatican Warlock assassins.

Whatever, goofy, 10 lbs. You girls rock. There's a reason the cameraman was on you two all night! Remember when I predicted it was going to be a video? (Wrong as always with my predictions!) You made it on screen anyway!
is the Golden video not working for anyone else? I click "play" and it hangs at 'connecting'. This happened on my PC at work and my Mac at home...

'Storytellers' Gets Hip
The VH1 standby books indie bands, rising stars
"Its a dream we've had since eighth grade," says My Morning Jacket's Jim James, whose band is one of six booked for VH1 Storytellers' 15th season. "It's in that Saturday Night Live and MTV Unplugged category."
Storytellers is shitfing from radio giants to younger acts like MMJ, Kings of Leon and Cee Lo Green. "We had every A-lister we wanted, from Green Day to Springsteen," says VH1 president Tom Calderone. "It's time to give the platform to rising stars."
The change means less canned stories and more revealing moments. James teared up while discussing "Dondante," about a pal who gave him his first guitar - and committed suicide. Kinds of Leon's set was full of hits like "Use Somebody." "We used the watch [Storytellers] all the time," says bassist Jared Followill. "It's one of the cooler things on television."
'Storytellers' Schedule
Kings of Leon, 5/13, 11 PM
Cee Lo Green, 5/20, 11 PM
My Morning Jacket, 6/3, 11 PM
Sheesh! I can't wait for this to air! :o
Fucking love this... :D
I did a search on "The Shows" and this was the last thread on this topic that I could find and thought it deserved a bump, but this airs tomorrow night!! Here's hoping for a real dvd release (along w/ the ACL show). Those are spectacular.
Thanks for the reminder!!! :dankk2:

OH WOW, I thought it was actually in the middle of the month.
Thank you for bumping this. Now I can DVR it in HD. It's been a big week for MMJ! : )
So excited for this!!
You are my current hero, my brain hasn't recouped from tuesday night yet, I would've completely missed this. Dvr set
It's also re-airing at 1:00 am, thankfully.

FYI to those DVRing this event, you might want to record the show immediately following Storytellers as well. I had set my DVR to record the entire series and the KOL show went over and cut off part of their last song. I could care less about missing the end of the KOL set, but I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone for MMJ in case it were to happen again.
BTW, I have watched both KOL and Death Cab episodes and I have a feeling MMJ is going to blow them the fuck away! I think the boys will be showing those tuning in that are not familiar with their live performances just how freaking good of a band they are! 8)
i cannot wait for you guys to watch the part about dondante :D :D

i'm sure this'll be up somewhere but kicking myself for not having cable right now... well, not actually, i enjoy not spending 60+ dollars for trash tv.

i hope they don't but i'm sure they are gonna cut something b/c we were there for a long ass time .. i would think it was too much content for the show and has to be edited down.
Plans for this evening equal this....
1) Drink a large amount of beer
2) Watch Eddie Vedder's "Water on the Road" dvd which just out on 5/31.
3) Drink a large amount of beer
4) Watch video from the amazing Louisville Palace Unstaged show by MMJ on YouTube.
5) Drink a large amount of beer
6) Watch VH1 Storytellers on MMJ.
7) Drink a large amount of beer
8) Take a bath because this much self indulgence can't be clean :bath:
I think that's about the best kind of night you can spend if your not going out anywhere and just chillin with the wife. Be a perfect way to cap off this work week!
Unfortunately, they'll probably cut out quite a bit. I remember with Pearl Jam, they cut out at least 4 songs from the original show. Also, they dubbed a lot of the interview footage over the songs when being played, making it very distracting. I mean, you want to hear what the guys have to say about the songs, but you also want to see them play the songs too.
Hopefully, they get it right tonight.

Perfect plan. Laying by the pool, drinking and listening to Circuital right now as part of the pre-game.
I really hope they don't play interviews over the songs. That was the main reason I wasn't a big fan of Storytellers. It's very cool to have them introduce the song and tell you about it, but then lets hear the music.
I really want to hear the Dondante story, so if they do cut it out you better have a good memory so you can tell it about us.

Pretty sure Golden is on there too. Read somewhere about Jim talking about bars being dark and lonely with his grandmother. Maybe I am wrong though.
Golden and Wonderful should be on there since those are already viewable on the website. I've seen those two.
I'm just hoping it's as good as the concert the other night, being able to watch that live on Tuesday with my wife and a bottle of wine was outstanding, one of the best nights of TV we've had in a long time.

They've released the Golden performance online. However, for KOL I know they released "Knocked Up" online before the show aired on TV and it didn't make the cut. So, it's really impossible to know.

great show, another cool twist.
Great show last night but the mix was just horrible. I was actually astounded that the mix was so bad. Its VH1 and a national event on TV? But the guitar was so poorly mixed that it overtook most of the music. maybe I'm extra picky being a musician and a audiophile but I felt that it took away from what was otherwise an epic show. And listening to Jim chat was really cool.

I noticed at the part in dondante when the band really starts rocking that the overall sound was muted a bit. usually that song gets louder as it progresses and you could tell the producers compensated for tv there. Amazing sound for the most part though.
Not available in my area... If it's not the time zone, it's the area, damnit! (http://im-smiley.com/imgs/girly/girly018.gif) (http://im-smiley.com) Good thing we got those meatballs, or I'd be so out of here!
Really enjoyed it. Thought the mix was a bit off too, but for me it seemed like Jim's mic was way too high in the mix at the start. Figured it was the format given the "storytelling" part of the show and that it was just like that cause of the talking between songs. It def seemed to level out after Wordless. Have heard Jim's voice sound a lot stronger than it did on this show. Kinda a bummer that it couldn't shine brighter for the exposure they were getting. Def thought the Dondante was the highlight and loved the Golden story. Bummer it's such a subdued environment for the crowd. Hopefully there were SOME people dancing in that place. I'm thinking I would have got tossed for flailing during that Dondante. Regardless, I'm sure there were a bunch of new MMJ fans born last night. Glad to see 'em get some quality exposure.

Same thing for me with Dondante. I knew the background but not all of the bits and pieces. It was def hard to not get emotional seeing Jim so emotional telling that story. Best part was him saying he didn't want to play that song but then said that they were going to so that their friend could be on storytellers too. That was pretty awesome.

Did find it odd that noting off of EU made the cut?
Also watched this with fascination and admiration. Dondante flat-out knocked me on the floor, as well as emotional Jim's tale behind the song.
INCREDIBLE!!! Can't wait to watch it again and again...
Any kind soul able to share a DVD recording of this anywhere?
Argh, no Irish love with the storytellers show, can't watch any of the vids dammit :'(

Yeah, no love outside of the US, it's so sad (http://im-smiley.com/imgs/sad/sad010.gif) (http://im-smiley.com)
Was it just me or did the guys just shred through on amazing set? The insight into the lyrics were awesome a name drop of Shannon Hoon always gets me giddy, and the performance of Dondante rocked my face off! Hail Jim James & Co!

Says 90 minutes for Cox Cable. All of the other episodes from this season have been just the 60 minute reairs. Hopefully this is not the case with MMJ
Is the download 60 or 90 minutes?

Wow, so I have watched this episode three times now, and I just need to say something. It's a tad on the long and serious side, so feel free to skip through to the next post >>>>>
Of course, as a devoted fan, I knew the story behind Dondante. I have read as much information as I could find about the young man, Aaron Todovich. As a mental health professional, and someone who lost a close family member to suicide in 2009, I was anxiously waiting to hear Jim tell the story about his friend.
As is the case with this band over and over again, I was emotionally wrecked by Jim's relating of the story about his friend. When he described him as someone who was so special, but not matter how much you told him that, he couldn't hear it, and someone who had chosen to leave us, I couldn't help but fall apart. When he spoke about this cruel world, and the sentiment that he "can't hardly blame him" for wanting to leave, I was able to understand just a little more about my own loss. Obviously, I know about mental health as someone who has worked in the field for 15 yrs, but when it's someone you are close to, all bets are off.
I just want to say that as an active member of suicide prevention groups and foundations, and always trying to fight the stigma around suicide, I thought Jim's telling of that story couldn't have been more perfect. My hope is that if there is anyone who was watching that, or anyone reading this, that they will reach out to someone, anyone, and know that things can improve, and get better. This is a great community of people on this board, and I would hope that no one would feel so isolated, that they couldn't reach out here and get the support that is sometimes so desperately needed.
Another resource that can be helpful if you or anyone you know are feeling this level of desperation is that American Foundation for Suicide Prevention AFSP.ORG or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.
Bless you all, and bless this band. Thanks for lettin' me share.
i still haven't watched this because I was at Wakarusa and I don't have cable. I'm about to enjoy it on the computer over some lunch for the first time. based on all these writings i feel like itll be great.

It is hard not to get teary eyed while watching him talk of his friend. DonDante is a song that I love to no end. Told my wife to make sure that's the last song t hat is played at my funeral (Okonokos version because I loved hearing them play it live). Thanks Trish for providing that and your right about your post.
I think anyone who has ever connected with MMJ's music at a certain level can say that it is a real representation of a soundtrack for their lives. That's the kind of music they produce. So many different emotions and tales that we all can relate to. Very good stuff.
I'm confused.....? What channel is this 90 minute Storytellers on Saturday? I just looked up 9pm Saturday 6/11... and its FUCKIN "Bring It On"?

Finally got to watch this. Wow. What an amazing show and a gut wrenching story. Let's say I'm glad I was watching it alone, :'( Dondante has always been a favorite of mine, as perhaps you can tell, and that just took it to another level. I love this freaking band!!
Was also especially pumped to hear the Shannon Hoon shoutout. I have believed for a long time that he and Blind Melon are an incredibly underrated band.

trish.... love you, lady! thank you so much for sharing. you are so spot on. about mmj, the story behind dondante & this wonderful online community i feel lucky to be part of.
watching that & hearing the story (which i was sort of familiar with already) told by jim & seeing patrick wiping away his tears in the background & then jim struggling to keep it together... oh man... ask laura - we were both near tears ourselves in my living room. welled up to the brim. for me it hit really close to home as well because i lost one of my best friends a little over 2 years ago too. the part that really got me tho, where i could not hold back the tears, was
after the song when jim said (paraphrasing) that the story has a happy ending because he knows his friend is in a better place & happy now and so on. that just moved me. i definitely had a take a moment after that. because i know that's true of my friend as well & i am finally at peace with it.
and to say again that if anyone was watching/reading who feels like they just can't take any more in this life - there are people out there (and in here too) who can help. you're not alone.
;)
This forum really is a great place.
For those not familiar with Palladia...
I have Comcast cable with HD service here in New Hampshire. We get a channel (828) called Palladia, which carries content from VH1 and other music channels, in HD.
They are broadcasting a 90-minute version of MMJ on VH1 Storytellers tomorrow (Saturday) night at 9pm EST.
Here's there website:

It will be rebroadcast at midnight.

The "setlist" for the taping of this show is:
Wordless Chorus
The Way That He Sings
Golden
Circuital
Moving Away (audio problem)
Dondante
Gideon
Smokin' from Shootin'
Moving Away- take 2
Wonderful (TWIF)
26 Second Song
Lullabyes, Legends, and Lies
One Big Holiday
For the 1-hour episode, the setlist/order was:
Wordless Chorus
Golden
The Way That He Sings
Dondante
Wonderful (TWIF)
One Big Holiday
Based on online clips and articles, I would expect to see Circuital, Gideon, and 26 Second Song > Lullabies, Legends, and Lies. Not sure if there'll be time for more. We'll soon see...
"The full 90 min Storytellers storytime airs tonight on Palladia at 9pm EDT! And 12am! And tomorrow at 4, and Tues at 2, and Wed at 2.30..." MMJ just tweeted. Excited!
I don't know how the band did it, but they got the majority of the songs played on the Palladia broadcast. I have never seen that happen on any other Storytellers. Usually what you see on the VH1 broadcast is what you get.
Only the 2 clips CC mentioned (26 Second Song, Lullabyes) were not broadcast.
I was so happy to hear the story behind Smokin' From Shootin' because I always wondered what it was about.

So if you watched last night's 90-minute episode and this clip, you've seen nearly all that VH1 has to offer from the Storytellers taping (though some of Jim's "storytelling" is still missing).

These guys always want more! Thanks for the vid; too soon for the 90 minute version to appear. No we all have something for our iWhatnots.
I think the Dondante story was incredible, shows the emotion that Jim puts in his songs. If you lose someone close it's hard to talk about it to someone without getting emotional, so can't imagine talking in front of that many people about it. So thanks for sharing the story with us!
Any chance there is a link out there for the full 90 minute version ?
Here's a link to the extended version of Storytellers. I tried to record it in HD but my computer and cable box wouldn't play nice so I had to record it in SD. I guessed that something is better than nothing? I encoded the video into MP4 so it should be playable on idevices and whatnot. I made a DVD as well, but it's too big to upload. If anyone wants a copy let me know, but be forewarned its just letterboxed widescreen in SD. I haven't uploaded to megaupload before or watched the entire MP4 start to finish so if anyone has any problems let me know.

Haha, nice analogy. No shows this summer- maybe a last minute decision for Philly but the rest of the shows fall around the wedding and honeymoon. Maybe if they are hitting the tri-state area in the fall.
Love the show but the sound mix is god awful. And it's been that way for all the new storytellers. The vocals are up way to loud and sound harsh. But still enjoy watching it.
just watching this on VH1 again
same. so good.
On Palladia now. I love how Penny looks like a giddy schoolgirl Everytime they show her. ;D

Are you kidding me? I love seeing y'all in the audience with the exact expression that I would have on my face. I'm living vicariously through you.

priceless!
EEEEEK@!! (lol)....it's really hard to watch yourself on TV. You think it would be exciting but it's hard. ...
;D ;D that is the priceless shot of penny with her hands clasped over her heart .. so endearing, so cute !!! i was slightly terrified to see myself on tv but it wasn't as horrendous as i thought it might be. what a great experience that was
I am desperate for the full set of this recording. Can anyone please tell me in 2015, how can I get this in my eyes right now?? Thank you so much!
It's aired on Palladia every couple of weeks.
Anyone know when the next showing of this is? I havent forgiven myself for letting this get recorded over a couple years ago and am dying to see it again.
Here's an extended version from Palladia.

Grabbing this as soon as I get home! Thanks JY!
I can't believe this is here. I am a fairly new fan (last 2 years-ish) and just discovered that they did a storytellers a few years back. I watched some clips on youtube yesterday but wanted the whole thing. YAY!!!! I can' wait to watch this tonight!

Thanks, John, for bringing this to light again. Jim's stories are great and I think this is an excellent video to prepare virgins for the trip to the altar like I have to do over the next few weeks. Listening to Dondante now and no doubt all of it through the weekend.
I've only seen the Dondante video from Storytellers, but nothing else.
Thanks for sharing, downloading now and excited to watch!
