At first I was just slightly bummed that we didn't get Neko. I love her more by the hour. But noticed that basically also meant we get a theatre show and not an amphitheatre show which is so much more awesomer.

Yeah, this is the spot brother (sister?), top notch venue. Third or fourth most popular venue (by size) in the world. It'll be GA (maybe reserved balcony) so get there early if you want a seat.

Ive never heard that but it IS a great place. Only holds 2000, set up like a theatre, great sound, two awesome bars with plenty o' tenders and great site lines. What more could you ask for. It's also set in one of the 2 or 3 best night life areas in STL.
edit: also, yes, the fox is stunning. I've been told the Dead almost bought that theatre once to make it a home base but somebody tried and succeeded in stopping it from happening. Now I wish I had more info on that subject.

Sold out and it was 5 years ago. Trust me, I've counted every damn day since. It didn't sell out fast. Most sell out shows here are a slow burn unless its someone hot, like the mess with Mumford and Sons which sold out in less then an hour.
IF ANYONE GOES TO THIS FROM LOUISVILLE OR SURROUNDING AREAS - I'm trying to go to this then fly to Red Rocks the next day, so Im looking for a ride for my lady and I. Gas money and beers would be your payment. This is on my 21st bday and I really wanna be here!

venue sells a lot of tix cause it's AWESOME, I may be a lil biased, but I've been around a bit and it's hard venue to beat IMHO :)
It is a sick venue. Easily my favorite place to see a show. Hitting up Fleet Foxes there in July as well.

The pageant was voted 4th best venue last year, and it is hard to beat. Not really a bad view in the house. I've never heard a band sound bad at the pageant either. The loop is the area the venue is on. Lots of good bars and tasty food, good record store west of venue also.
... I was told the dead wanted to buy the fox also. But the owners didn't want "those kinda people" to run it. She's a gem now, but I think it was really ran down for a pretty good spell in the 80's. I kinda thought MMJ would play there this go round, pageants kinda small for them.
Back to the subject, after skipping St.Lou on the evilurges tour we ought to get a good one in aug.

You are probably right. Homeland Security would have to be brought in to offer protection if I didn't explode.

Is there a way to find out how much tickets are somewhere yet? Doesn't matter to me but I'm going to try and get a bunch of my friends to go to this one and I'm worried it's gonna be a bit steep for them. I would guess less than what was paid for L-ville last fall or Chicago in June. Honestly, if I were a promoter I would price them $35ish. They haven't been here in a while and I think in this case that works against them as they don't quite have the fanbase. But wtf do I know, lol :)

At the risk of sounding like an ass, kick ass $25 dollar shows are a dime a dozen over the past few months and they'll have to be somewhat competitive with that I think...plus a lot more shows on the schedule. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised at 25 advance, 30 DOS.

I likes bein right.... and I'm not going to catch to much hell for this.
Look into Off Broadway, Old Rock House, and the Firebird for affordable great shows. I don't think I've seen any show over $20 at any of those 3 locations. All are great and get great acts. I'm partial to Old Rock House as it's across from my office. Hell, BH and I saw Black Angles and I think my ticket was $12 or $15.
Is there a GA pit or is it all seats?
Pageant just changed their seating. Everything cept the balcony has always been GA. I think now just the floor is GA. The elevated table section by the sounboard has always been GA but I'm guessing no longer as it got to be a fight for those choice spots. I only want GA this time

last show I went to was Galactic and the guy from Phish...all the tables and chairs were removed form that soundboard level all the way around, if you wanted to sit it was the next level up or balcony.
I don't know if that is permanent or what.

I've lived in Memphis most of my life and yes it's total shit they've never played there. Memphis is home. I live in Lawrence, KS currently and just decided today, while sitting at the bar, that I'm going to th STL show and the KC show.
I am very happy with this decision.
Cheers!
excellent decision
Anyone thinking about recording this show? I love recording shows but I'm usually pretty well buzzed and have to pee and it's a whole thing.

If someone else is gona record I won't bother with it. I may record the next night in KC, either way.
Anyone have any suggestions for recording better with this particular device? Or at all really. I recorded a David Byrne show about 4 years ago with it and it sounds great.
2nded the excellent decision. There are a few recorders at the Pageant usually. I'll be a little busy to attempt to for this one.
I just noticed that Delta Spirit is the opener for this show. If you haven't heard them, they are a phenomenal band. I couldn't imagine a better 1-2 punch than this. Also, I saw The National at The Pageant last year and it is the best venue I've been to hands down, and I've been to almost every comparable spot in Chicago.

Yeah that happened to me, and there are four of us traveling so we went GA. So it says you must be 21 to be on the balcony, does that mean that if I'm on the floor I can't drink?! The reason I'm going to this show out of my way is because its my 21st B-Day...
Na I bet there will be wristbands or something. They'd loose money if GA people couldn't drink.
anybody know what the fees/shipping is on Roll Call tix?
I'd like to support the club but it's pretty easy to just drive over to Suite 100 (box office).
There looks to be a two seat limit for the balcony, I don't think I have ever seen that before. I guess they are expecting a crowd.

About 5 bucks per ticket for the fee - all roll call tix are will call
I got two balcony seats then tried again to get a different location and it, the computer, acted like all two seats side by side were taken.

There is an under 21 section. Part of the under 21 section include the pit. If you want to go down there with cocktail, order a water with your drink and pour the drink into the water cup.
It's not really an issue if use a lil discretion.

I guess that was the reason for the limit. I was worried after Milwaukee that the demand might not be there.....looks like that's not an issue.
i got center balcony seats so thats going to make the 4hr trek to louisville a lil better.
e wind - "So it says you must be 21 to be on the balcony, does that mean that if I'm on the floor I can't drink?! The reason I'm going to this show out of my way is because its my 21st B-Day..."
you have to be 21 to get in the balcony by theory at the pageant, but i've never seen them turn anyone away from upstairs for being underage.
if you try to get served and are under its going to be a differant ballgame i bet. the first few rows of balcony have a waitress that comes around sometimes, i think thats got alot to do with the age limit upstairs.
if you want seats get in line early(real early) and grab some of the ones at the tables on the ground level. great venue no matter where your at, be a good time for all. from what i remember you can drink on the lower level, just not on the floor. but that may change show by show. and have a happy bday show
I don't think you can hit Suite 100 for Roll Call pre sale purchases. For normal ticket sales, hell yeah hit the box office and pay cash as they waive the fees.
E-Wind. Normally the floor and part of the "section" just above it is all ages. Do as Rufus said to get drinks on the floor. Some of the security guys are cool, others not so much. The section around the soundboard and the main level bar area are stricktly 21+. Same for the Balconey
What is suite 100, and also the halo bar opens at five and you get to go into the show early is this correct?
A thought for the GA folks like me. There is a bar (Halo) attached to the venue that opens early, I think 5 or 6 and then closes when the bar reaches capacity. Those folks are let into the venue before the "doors" open. There is typically an informal line in the bar so the earlier you get there the better your choices are in getting a GA area table.
I'll be there early of course.
You are able to go out and bring in food from the surrounding restaurants. My choice is pizza from Pi located directly across the street. It's a nice place with a bar and that would be a great place for the reserved folks to gather if your not going in early.
Quote from: ChronicHunger on May 31, 2011, 01:37 PM

It's a store attached to the venue. They are open all day everything from coffee to band and Pageant merch and acts as the daytime box office.
Awesome - Thanks for the heads up!
Seriously, if you are using the Halo (my normal route of going), get there before 5 and wait in line to get into the bar. They will hit capacity very early for this one so be there early. They have been known to close the door 5 minutes after they open. And yes, get Pi. I have dreams of that fucking crust.
Right on, tickets purchased. It says box office opens at 3, is that going to be to late to get into the bar?
I will more than likely be taking the train in - arrives around 2 in the afternoon.

Yep. Doors for Halo open officially at 5 but for big shows lines outside start anytime between 4-4:30. Last time I saw Modest Mouse, I didn't arrive early enough and they hit capacity in 10 minutes.
Got two center balcony tix. My friend actually was able to order 4 tickets! I didn't even try that thinking two was the limit. Doh! I'm going to have to buy 6-7 more on Friday.
To summarize about the Pageant:
Balcony which includes seats AND GA AND a bar, is 21+ only and they will check your hand stamp at the bottom of the stairs.
The lower level, has several areas, mainly a pit, and lots of tables and "tiered" levels and another bar. If you want a table, or a good sightline handrail upstairs or downstairs, get to the halo bar early, like darkland said. If you want to get rail in the pit, you could probably show up a bit later as the pit seems to take a while to fill up. There is usually an under 21 area off to one side of the stage. Sometimes drinks are allowed in the pit, but rarely and almost certainly NOT for this show. So under 21 can get in the pit.
Entire venue just went to no smoking. Bathrooms are usually open with no lines. Drinks can be tough to get when it's sold out so double fist at all times.

amen to that. The traffic through the bar area is a nightmare. Get your drink on early.

I saw R.L. Burnside 3 times before he passed. Got to speak to him and a bunch of the Mississippi Country Hills blues guys. They played in Memphis a lot. Junior Kimbrough still does. Check out Paul "Wine" Jones if you haven't already. He's the man.
You need some of these.....

At Hangout we used these "flasks" that were sold as flasks but were basically IV bags. Made super easy hiding possible.

Rufus, I'm way down to meet at the bar, and my party and your party and everyones party join in the front at good tables.

If you have seats can you go on the floor as well or do you have to stay upstairs?
if you're 21 you can pretty much go wherever you want....up/down, in/out
that said I don't ever sit reserved so there may be some wrinkle there but I have never seen it in action

Was gonna splurge for balcony seats, but i'm in a group of 4 and wanted them all together... so GA for this guy!
PreSale Sold OUT! Take that Kansas City! (And Pittsburgh and Boston and Detroit and Columbia)
WOW, i was already counting down the days until this and kc, but after the louieville show my mind was blown. This is going to be the longest 2 months ever.
Chronic where are you from?
Thinking about taking the train from KS to the STL show and back .
Springfield mo, i think me and a couple of buddies are driving to stl, staying the night up there and then driving to kc, a train ride is always fun though. Ive taken one from stl to chi a couple times.
August 2 really cannot get here soon enough. This is gonna be a long, hot summer.
No shit. How to keep occupied??
I just got 2 in the balcony during the public onsale. Seems like the balcony sold out really fast. Anyone know what it is like?
Allright. Got all my tickets. 9 of us going. 6 of us have seen them before. 3 virgins that basically said they would go just so I would shut up and leave them alone. They are in for a treat! (I hope)

Yeah that minimum of two in the balcony totally thru my plans off. Had to get somebody a single! Oops. Oh well, I may go to the floor anyway. Balcony is really great. Great sound and you are seriously right on top of the band. You can't get much better viewing. It can get a bit rough at the extreme sides for viewing angles but otherwise it's great.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I may end up on the floor as well but it will be nice to have the option of having my own space and a seat if it gets too crazy. I am pumped!!

Balcony is great, except on far right or left. I've sat on the extreme stage right four rows u and you miss a good chunk of the stage on that side.
Shorter lines for bar and restrooms also.
last time Jacket came, I was in the balcony, front row, center seat, by myself, and absolutly happy as could be. You really are on top on the stage. It's great.

MORE IMPORTANTLY...if you are coming in town and are looking for something to do, you would be making a big mistake IMO if you didn't consider the City Museum. It's not a museum but really more like a playground on acid. It's one of the coolest places on the planet IMO.

SOLD OUT!
I don't imagine anyone knows of two reasonably priced tickets for this show? The Pageant is almost literally in my backyard, and I slacked just one or two days too many :'( . I am going to feel awful if I miss this show. I have two friends from Louisville coming in for it that got their tickets through Roll Call, and I would have to watch them leave my apt knowing that I cannot enter with them. I am a Louisville transplant and I have seen them thrice in Louisville, now I need to see them in my adopted city! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: I see there is a thread devoted to these types of transactions, but it is still worth trying in this thread in case you know anyone who isn't on the boards etc. Thx

Would anyone be interested in having more of an organized tailgate (bar-gate) or are folks going to go in early?
I was thinking again about the place directly across the street (Pi) we might be able to work out some special or ???
FYI, I think it would be easy to get a few tables at the opening and then some folks can rotate in and out...or does that sound like too much of a hassle?

Where The Pageant is located is pretty chill (the loop). My father-in-law used to live over there and we once stayed in this ridiculously kitschy hotel that is not too far from the venue. It reminds me of the kind of hotel that game shows would give away prizes to in the 60's and 70's. Awesome hotel bar as well. Our friends were on a super tight budget when they got married and couldn't afford much. They got one of the many theme rooms (jungle room I think) and loved it. We got just your average room, and well, we got what we paid for. If you have a little more flow, there is boutique hotel around there somewhere. BH and Mjk should know a little bit more than I...
Ok, just asked the hubs about this before posting. We stayed at The Cheshire, which just got remodeled and may not be open yet for business. But I would check them out. And go to The Fox and The Hound (the bar in the lobby) if you can. Bummer about the remodel, my guess is all the theme rooms are gone...
The Cheshire is cool! I have not been since the remodel, or even know what the deal is with the remodel. There is a hotel attached to the Pageant now but I'll bet it's expensive. The Pageant is not really that close to downtown so most neighborhoods around there are fine. If you have any trouble, let me know and I'll dig into it. I'd suggest Priceline for last minute Tuesday and you should get something nice AND cheap.
Where we meeting before the show? Pi?
I think it's awesome that the band took so much time off ahead of this show to plan for it. ;)

Cheshire is "themed" rooms now apparently. Like a jungle room, Arabian Nights room, etc. You might need some hand sanitizer and a hazmat suit staying there. Fox and Hound used to be great. Haven't been there in ages. Be very careful in the Loop area. This year has not been the best year for crime as there had a rash of muggings this year. Be careful walking the area alone. Moonrise is the hotel connected to the Pageant. It's very nice, but ain't cheap as BH points out. Closest "hotel area" that I can think of to the Loop is maybe midtownish, over by Slu and the western edge of downtown. Not particularly close. Pageant is next to a Metrolink stop so if you stay outside the area try to get a place near the Metro. StL does have a stupid 11:30ish curfew so this will not be an extra late night. If you need food in the area, Pi is across the street along with a really good Chinese place. Down the street in the western part of the Loop there is Chipoltle, Blueberry Hill (great fucking burgers), and Cheese-Ology (all mac and cheese and it's killer).
The moonrise has a special with the pageant where you can pay 100$ if you're seeing a show. Booked that! Connected? That's awesssoommee
Some tickets have been released if anyone is interested. See ya Tuesday
If you're at the Moonrise, more to drink!!
Hi guys! I've dropped the ball a bit on this as I was on vacation for the past couple of weeks (Alaska...words wouldn't do it justice) anyway....
I finally got the scoop from the folks at Pi (right across the street from the venue) they will be having from three to six $3.14 Missouri beers, $2 well drinks and $4 Sangria.
I think I can get the Missouri beers at that price all night but I'm not 100%.
They would like to get a rough idea of numbers so if you would let me know by a show of hands ::) if you think that sounds like a good idea and if you think you'll be coming.
Remember the City Museum
I should be bringing about 8 total to Pi but most of us are working so we probably won't be there until 6-6:30. :(
Ill be with a party of 5, I suppose we'll be there as early was whoever else. We'll be driving from Louisville leaving in the AM
I'm planning to head over earlier, getting in line at the halo bar for early entry getting a table for home base and back to Pi. Kinda depends on the crowd though.
A really slick plan would be to rotate folks in and out of the Halo bar to get a few tables together...throw some coats on chairs and head over to Pi.
Or something like that, if I get to chattin it up I might blow off the table thing you know how it goes ;D
oh and so I don't just disappear into the crowd again, I guess I'll be wearing a bright green Vintage Vinyl t shirt
just so's you knows

I don't know exactly, around five for sure, hopefully earlier....four would be the the odds on favorite. I like to have a table, it's kind of a pain on the front end but well worth it later. Ill be at Pi before five unles there is a line to get into halo....there probably won't be one but if it looks like a long line I'll probably hop in it.

The Halo will only fit a certain amount of people. So people line up to get into the Halo bar. Once your in the Halo bar, your good, because you and the rest of the peeps in the bar will get in before everyone else. You can also line up inside the bar so you are the first of the first, but I never really thought that was necessary. If you have seats, or want to get in the pit, none of this is really necessary. Only if you want a good rail spot or table.

And don't think just because it's a weekday show, that line will not get long quick. Been to weekend shows where not a lot of people showed up form early entry but last time I saw Modest Mouse it was a weekday show and got there about 5:10ish and it was full.

Oh hells...gotta figure out how to meet up. With the plans I have, I'm not making it to Pi beforehand and I'm not gonna be in the Pageant's area until closer to 6.
i'm going to meet up w-kate & robin for lunch which may turn into an extended beer-knitting hullaballoo. ;D if i don't see you before the show, will make an effort to find you after. i am always a lingerer when the show ends. so keep an eye out: about 5", shoulder length blonde hair, post-mmj-show-stunned expression. ;)

don't know if i'll make it to pi, or cave to my nature and get in line for the show. ;D but don't leave the pageant without saying hello!

Ha. Trying to somehow work out meeting up with your gurls for lunch. Robin is the bestest.
DAMMIT. Delta Spirit just tweeted that their flight out of RI was cancelled and they may not make St Louis. Keeping an eye on this.
FUCK THAT. THEY BETTER FUCKING BE THERE
If they cannot make it, does that give us a 4 hour Jacket set then?
one can only hope. i'm really really hoping to see delta spirit, but if they dont make it i hope the boys will go on a little early, or maybe jim wil come out and do a pre-show set thats just accoustic chorale

agreed that it would be a huge bummer, but I wouldn't worry - I think they'll make it.
Took a wild guess that they were flying Southwest since that's a big Providence carrier- I can see that flight 3690 to St L leaving 7:15 arriving 11 pm is cancelled. However, if you look at flights tomorrow am there's a bunch of flights they can take - 6 am, 7 am, 7:15 am, 11 am.....
can you tell I'm bored?
I for one wouldn't mind if delta didn't make it. A four hour jacket set would be mighty fine with me. I'm seeing them at the Kc show anyways. Im so freakin psyched!!
Does anyone know what time sound check is? And if there is anyway to be able to see it? I do know of a spot that you can hear soundcheck for shows at the Pagaent.
TODAY IS THE DAY
Getting ready to hit the road. Been pumped for this show for months now. All MMJ in the headphones today.
Sad that I don't get to see the Red Rocks show but I was there for their first time playing RR a couple years back and that was a spiritual experience. All you guys making the trip after STL are going to love it.

There is a tweet on the bottom of their website saying they boarded a plane about an hour ago and they are on their way to St. Lou. So relieved, they are one of my favorite bands and this will be my first time seeing them live.

I don't think there is a set time. Yeah, there are a couple spots out back and up front that you can hear. Be careful out back, Beatle Bob may pop up. :-\
Not sure if it's the exhaustion from my morning run, or the obscene amount of cafe cubano I just drank, or the tape worm I apparently have, but I'm shaking right now. Cannot fucking wait for this. 5 years has been way too long.
Anyone have any idea what the poster looks like? How fast will they sell out? I plan on being there early but I don't get off of work until 3:30. I need this poster
Same here G Wil. Suite 100 is open now, however merch does start getting put out until 5ish.
What's suite 100? Anyone know when the box office opens
Suite 100 is the store connected to the pageant. I think box office is open now
I don't know about you guys, but im freaking out c'mon. 2nd jacket show engage. Truck gased, St Louis bound, you can find me in st louis rollin on dubs. Smokin' on dubs in clubs blowin' up like cocoa puffs.
I'm planning on being at Pi around 4:30 ish, drinks and herbal refreshments!
Unfortunately I prob won't get there til 6:15ish. I'll be wearing my navy Blue Cat Brew Pub shirt. It's dark blue with a catfish on it.

I have a theory that the first show after a mini-break within a tour is usually awesome. Let me know if I am right!
Have fun kids! 8)

just heard from BH---loooooves First Light and going crazy because.....it's called THE DARK (3rd song I think)
Sooooo glad to hear The Dark is finally getting some love. I lost it when I heard those opening notes in Toronto. Here's hoping we'll hear it a few more times on this leg of the tour.
And on a somewhat related note, the rockers from TTF really need to be played with more frequency. Evelyn, War Begun, Twilight -- it would be a crime to keep these tunes locked up.
I'm alive....I think a jizzed and soiled myself a few times. I lost it on The Dark, yes it was the 3rd song. Tom is really fucking cool got to hang with him before and after. They were all exhausted afterwards. I think I have spoiled Trent for concerts. He's seen Sonic Youth on the steps of the Arch, got to have a long conversation with Pokey LaFarge before the show and got music tips, and this.

I'm sorry I missed the chance to meet any of you guys! (issues @ work, missed plane, blah blah blah). The show was ridiculous- "Dondante" was soul-crushing (in the best possible way) & the "Off/Mahgeetah" combo seemed to light a fire under crowd en masse. Man, withdrawals are going to be a mother...
Yah, I'm hating pretty hard on mjk73 right now ;)

La barba de Castro, yvon, my girlfriend, and myself were on the rail and could've touched Carl at any govin moment. Super intimate venue- probably the est one I've seen them in. Such a fantastic show! :D :D and seriously, Carl is the shit. K think I watched him more than Jim.
The poster is awesome, I got that as well as a pick from carl and a setlist! Great fucking night. THE DARK!!!!!
Sorry I missed all you guys again. Really sorry cause we ended up next to some psychopath who was intent on standing right in front of our table the entire night. The show was incredible and despite the d-baggery a great time was had by everyone. Passed on the poster, I don't think it was nearly as cool as the one from Chicago. Speaking of, I heard that there might be another "artisits" run.
good times!
What a night! We got to Pi late (6:45ish) and could hardly even get in the place. I'm bummed I didn't get to meet any more forum peeps. I should have worked harder to make that happen. Luckily I ran in to Ms. Y afterwards and we got to glow about the show for a nice long time. See you tommorow Ms. Y!

Holy crap, no matter how many times I see these guys, I'm still blown away by the intensity. We had perfect seats, the nice couple behind me didn't mind that I stood up and danced the whole night. Great sound, perfect view. What can I say. Greatest Band EVAH! Here's a good local review with the tidbits.......
My Morning Jacket | Delta Spirit
The Pageant
August 2nd, 2011
Considering it's been almost five years since My Morning Jacket played St. Louis, it's only fair that the band began the current leg of their tour to a sold out crowd at the Pageant. Even if it was on the hottest night of the year.
Opener Delta Spirit hasn't neglected St. Louis; it played the Firebird less than six weeks ago. Not that this caused the band to slack -- Delta played like it was headlining the show with a wild and raucous set. Lead singer Matthew Vasquez aims for Jim James' vocal range, and nearly succeeds, although his voice is more punk rock than James' ethereal falsetto. It has to be to keep up with his band's double drum onslaught. Sometimes that's not enough, so they whip out the trash can, banged with a tambourine.
In 45 minutes, the members of Delta Spirit owned the stage, earning a standing ovation before clearing their own gear and replying to fans on Twitter, having lathered the audience into a suitable frenzy.
My Morning Jacket entered in a green glow, reminiscent of the cover art for their most recent release, Circuital, slowing building with heavy bass into "Victory Dance" and "Circuital" -- the opening tracks of the new album. By "The Dark", from their 1999 debut, Jim James was stalking the stage, hunched at the waist, wild curls and navy blue jacket swinging as he bounced, heat be damned. All the musicians were as physically loose as the music was tight.
Before "I'm Amazed", James told of the band's love of St. Louis. "St. Louis is the center of the power universe," he said. "If people knew how much power was here, they might try to fuck it up and it's great the way it is." Through the song, he bounced across the stage, reaching his arms to acknowledge the furthest reaches of the audience.
James' voice might be the finest in rock music today. Clean, clear, and endlessly emotive, his only vocal stumble came during "Gideon," and it was barely noticeable. He sounded a bit weathered but lacking none of his emotional power for "Golden". Soft and quiet, he crooned with the sigh of the pedal steel guitar, his own acoustic playing restrained except in fiery bursts, begging to be unleashed but yielding to his high lonesome croon.
Guitarist Carl Broemel keeps up with James on harmonies with a lilting falsetto highlighted on "Slow Slow Tune", which settled the crowd into a deep, entrancing groove, the music polished without being over-rehearsed.
From there: The calm doesn't last. A dark and dire build-up leads to "Heartbreakin' Man", where a reggae-influence vibe disintegrates into howling guitars, sudden stops, psychedelic pedal effects that create a cacophonous swirl before slamming into pitch-black silence, a door slamming shut before a heavy guitar screech and James' soaring vocals on "Mahgeetah". He could climb to the roof on the strength of one sustained note.
A guitar tease does its job, opening an extended run of songs starting with "You Wanna Freak Out", that blend together. Too often this relegates My Morning Jacket into the realm of jam bands. Jam bands aren't this orchestrated, able to shake the balcony with shuddering restarts, bringing a full-on breakdown of sound that would be a fine ending to a show. But not at 10:30.
For the next forty-five minutes, the band culled its catalog to create a symphony that was nightmare one minute and a plush dream the next with "Movin' Away," a lilting piano waltz that left James perched on a monitor, plaintively addressing his audience, ending with a pristine note before the storm swung into full gear.
The block continued with a primal beat, extended and sustained, that morphed into James screaming through a face full of hair and guitar blasts that feel like a storm, complete with flashing white light and roars and groans, turning into an agonized beast ("Run Thru") before developing into electronic chirps that blip into "Touch Me, I'm Going to Scream, Part Two", with its soaring falsetto harmonies and pounding undercurrent below the blips. Then, the climax and ending action of "Dondante", which ends with breath from Broemel's saxophone before falling into feedback's white noise.
These aren't aimless jams of the "look what I can do with my guitar for ten minutes" variety. It's "listen to the story we can weave as a band." This storytelling tradition is what makes them a "Southern" band far more than their sound and subjects.
The encore started with the climb of "Wordless Chorus" before again emptying suddenly into pitch-dark silence. Then the melodic bounce of "Touch Me, I'm Going to Scream, Part One," which also slams shut at the end.
After the new "The Day is Coming", James told a story about going through a door in a St. Louis skate park and finding himself trapped in a tiny space (at the City Museum, perhaps?). The incident, he said, inspired "Holdin' On To Black Metal", which the band proceeded to rip to metallic shreds before inspiring an full audience dance party with "Anytime" and "One Big Holiday", running cymbals and pounding drums that explode into the closest thing My Morning Jacket does to a classic southern rock guitar homage, before dissolving into Tom Blankenship's most simple, primal bass line: a heartbeat rhythm that gets completed shredded to end the night.

Off the Record was great.
Couldn't tell
Did anybody catch what kinda problems JJ was having with his guitar? I couldn't hear a problem with it when he started The Dark. I don't really hold it against the guitar tech, he was obviously hard at work tryin to get it back on track. I'm sure they take a beating the way they they get slung around.
There was a kink in the system somewhere. They got it worked out. JJ was cool with the tech guy that I saw.
I think it was something to do with the wireless plugin on his pedal board, the acoustic worked fine, but as soon as the Gibson came out on the dark it started cutting out. It looked like Jim was pretty upset when he went back there for the second time. I would be too though, you would've thought that one of the roadie brahs would've checked all of his guitars and not just one.
Anyways, i was one the rail in front of jim the whole time. AWESOME!
Quote from: ChronicHunger on Aug 03, 2011, 12:47 PMAnyways, i was one the rail in front of jim the whole time. AWESOME!
I'm sad I wasn't on the rail, but really kinda glad I wasn't. I'm dead tired enough as it is, if I was done there rocked out with you guys I would be destroyed today.
yea every muscle in my body is tired and sore. Kc tonight!!!!! wooooooohoooooooo!!!!!!
A positive review of the show. But I am getting so tired of these reviews... it seems to be more about the journalist trying to exhibit supreme journalism skills more than it is about the music itself. The last paragraph totally negates all legitimacy to the article. Jim only said about 4 times he was at the City Museum and the author didn't catch that apparently.
Great show, but since I've seen them at a big festival atmosphere I was hoping for a more intimate experience... but this jam filled rocker was obviously good too.
The sold-out show last night was something that couldn't be missed. Here's a pretty comprehensive show review, set list and photos from last night's concert in case you didn't make it out or just want to re-live it all over again:

Ha, no I was thinking of JP since it was the only song he knew before about a month ago. :)
Going to youtube.....
I was a little disappointed in the sound and then I get on here and see a bunch of reviews praising the sound. Did a little research, and it looks like I might literally have some issues going on with my ears. By about the middle of the show I was hearing a great deal of static and it was hard to pick out instruments. I would also hear static when the crowd roared. If I can no longer go to loud concerts without having the static issues, I will be gutted. :'(
Also had some drunk idiots around me that ruined the show for several. Dropped a full draft beer on my foot and kept messing with a couple in front of me, nearly starting a fight on several occasions.
Other than that, Delta Spirit and the first part of the MMJ show before my hearing issues started were fantastic.

I didn't notice the static but I noticed a few times guitars weren't at the proper volume especially during solos where it was easily noticeable.
I would give the sound above average marks, but it was too loud and less than stellar sound board work. Sound board being more of a catch all phrase in this context.
Maybe I'm getting old but at the volume level last night sounds and instruments start to wash out, and I think they over baked the volume to the detriment of sound quality. Maybe that's just me.
I was right of the stage and it was fine other than the glitches with the black hollow body of Jim's and one or 2 times where the guitar solo was a little low in the mix than was corrected. No static for us thankfully.
I'm pretty sure the static part was just my ears. I had it happen at a Spoon show last year also when I was right by a speaker. I think when the overall volume is really loud my ears only last for so long before the static starts kicking in. Even the crowd cheering was static-y. It's similar to tinnitus (ear ringing). Not sure why it happens to me, but now I think I'll start the shows with earplugs and hopefully make it all the way through. I do agree with Rufus though, master volume was too loud. Delta Spirit, for example, had a nice loud set, but you could still hear all the instruments clearly. Not the same for me with MMJ.
Did anyone record this show? Been looking for awhile and haven't been able to find it. I did however catch a drumstick which I am more than pleased with
I don't remember seeing any rigging. I think it was posted no recordings for that show but I may be confusing that with a different show.
Anyone see this?

Yeah it actually looks really cool, unfortunately I can't spend 130 bucks on a book.

I agree 100%
And why the hell is a fanmade photobook $130? Seems kinda skeevy
Apparently, someone can. SOLD!
Another one, less than half the original cost.

Congrats! If I was at that show, I'd pay $1/page for that book.
Re: the poster, I haven't seen it anywhere, but there's a link to the artist, David Perillo. Click the poster to get there...

If I remember, they sold out of the posters at the show. They only printed like 130ish
they sold out pre-show...the doors to the merch area opened before the doors to the actual venue...kind of different. I met Jim and Tom after the show and got a photo and a ticket autographed so wanted the poster to go with it. The book and a radical signed ticket stub bookmark will have to do!!!!

Nice! For the record, I don't mind outing myself as splurging the other book. I absolutely love it and agree that spending $130 on a book is borderline foolish, but the pics are great and it is super high quality. It wasn't the show I saw but it looks so similar in stage setup that it'll give me good memories forever, way better than the phone pics I snapped.
As to the price difference, mine was 11.5 x 14 and these are smaller. The producer is a cool guy and I've struck up a conversation with him. To call these "fanmade" is a bit under-representing.... the guy is a professional photographer and this is a portfolio he put together to show off his work. He only made 2 of the larger ones, one for him and one I bought. He made 5 of the smaller ones so expect more to pop up on ebay over time.
As to the price, I showed to a friend of mine who's a photographer because I wanted his take on whether it was reasonable. His response was that the sellers claim that he's basically selling at cost is accurate - it is very expensive to make large size super high-quality color pics, and $2/page or $1/page for the smaller is not unreasonable.
Good luck w/ the poster - I will keep my eyes ears open. There were 3 on this tour that were a bitch to find, and st L was one of them.
Johnny Yac- open invite to check it out next time you're around.
