Title: MMJ to play NY later this year
Post by: headhunter on May 14, 2011, 05:20 PM
From Tommy's recent interview with Consequence of Sound.   More good things to look forward to later this year.  Can anyone say T5 reunion gang?   :D

13. When're @mymorningjacket playing NY next? There aren't any dates listed on your tour calendar.
A. Still in the works but by fall. That's a long time to wait for a decent slice of pizza.

How about his answer to #9? ;D

9. Amen to that. Will any of MMJ's 5 nightstand shows at Terminal 5 last year ever see an official DVD/LP release?
A. Yeppers. Focusing on Circuital now. But there's some plannin' bein' done. Some mixes cooking up.

I kind of agree.  I'd fly back out for Radio City NYE, that would be sick.  Not even sure if anyone can get RCMH on NYE, I know it's pretty booked that time of the year.

And yes, T5 is possibly the worst venue known to man.

despite all the T5 hate, it is one of the easiest venues in NYC to get a beer....not counting MSG because they cut off the booze at like 10:00 / 10:30 which is RIDICULOUS

Plus, the food on the T5 roof is pretty awesome.  You're never going to see MMJ to play bowery, music hall, highline, webster hall....hammerstein is a'ight, and roseland is is the same bucket....best buy theatre is just weird....when you boil it down, T5 is one of the better indoor venues to catch MMJ simply due to size and ease of staking out a spot (if you're willing to get there early)...roseland maybe a close second.  MMJ in MSG if there's a pit section seats in MSG blow.....WAY overpriced regardless of where you are

Thus concludes a little love for T5

I couldn't disagree with you more on T5. The place blows, imo. It's definitely not easy to get a beer there during the show if you got there early and are camped at the rail. Pre show, maybe.

Roseland is a much better venue, with better accoustics too, imo.

As far as MSG goes, the energy in that place for shows makes it worth every penny to me. The only bad seats there to me are the upper 400's. I'd love to see Jacket play there again, NYE or any other night.

Different strokes,I guess. ;)

fair points - I think roseland would be a good substitute.  See your point on camping in the front - one of the secrets of the venue.  The railing in front of the first floor bar is one of the best places to watch from in the whole venue.  Slightly elevated, clear view, fairly close (in the grand scheme of things), and if you have at least one other person with you, you can take turns getting beer from right behind you.  Pulled the railing for all T5 shows, works very well....didn't get a banana, but had a great experience

You're right about that. I was tempted, but we had spots on the rail, and couldn't pass that up. Besides we did most of our drinking at McGees and before T5 got too crowded. ;)

The bartenders at that bar were pretty cool too. The one guy was a big Yankee fan and kept me up to speed on the scores during the playoffs last October.

I wonder how the sound is there with the overhang? Any problems? Whenever I was at that bar, there wasn't anyone on stage, so I couldn't tell.

you sir are crazypants !!! but each to their own naturally :) the only way i survived T5 was being on the rail up front each night which was just luck.

if it was fall and had to be an indoor show .. RCMH would be my obvious #1. roseland isn't bad .. i always go for upstairs and get a spot on the center railing and the bar just a few feet behind me. first spot i ever saw MMJ  the beacon is a great old venue but it's become a no fun factory .. security is very stern and last time i was there i kept being told to sit down. i had front row tix and told everyone that they needed to learn how to act at a rock show  ;D

i say a big no no to MSG. seeing them there felt a little .. i dunno, empty. it's just too big a venue for which i won't complain. i'm definitely cherishing MMJ not quite being big as say .. phish.

I don't see them playing T5 again. Especially if it is just 1 show. It isn't big enough for this tour. I also don't think Roseland and Beacon are an option for the same reason. This tour they are playing larger venues and I think it would have to be Radio City or MSG. But even Radio City seems a little too small. The last time they played their the show was an instant sell out. With that in mind I really think it will be MSG since Bowery Presents has been booking a lot of bands of a similar size there ie the Strokes and Phoenix.

First off, kind of surprised they are waiting until the Fall to play NYC because that pretty much means they would have to play MSG. They sold out Radio City in a matter of minutes back in 2008 and i bet they would do it again. Maybe they would do multiple nights in at Radio City.

It would have made more sense to come back in August and play an outdoor venue like Keyspan Park in Coney Island or out at Gov Island. Those are both in between the sizes of radio city (5500 capacity) and MSG (19000 or so capacity). Wilco and Daft Punk played at Keyspan the past few years and they did well. Maybe they will have an early fall show there.

Do you think they are waiting to announce this show until after Mountain Jam on June 5th? That festival is only about 2 hours outside of the city and maybe they contractually can't announce it until it has either sold out or the festival has passed.

I'm not familiar with most of the NYC venues... I saw TTF at T5 last year that's it. But with regards to some ideas floating around... Most of the shows they first posted for this tour (ex. Toronto) are in small intimate venues.. Making, from my perspective, NYC a major possibility at some point... Although they are focused mainly on the East coast so far and not one posted yet... I just can't wait for Toronto 7/11

I think another cool venue for them to play would be Floyd Bennett Field. Supposedly they are going to start having concerts there. here is some info on it:
