There is a great article in the latest Rolling Stone (Katie Perry is on the cover...not quite sure why). It isn't online yet, but when it is I will post a link. Definitely worth picking up the edition, article is quite lengthy and has amazing insight into the band.

Hour Weekly - My Morning Jacket: Circuit bending (http://"http://hour.ca/2011/06/30/my-morning-jacket-circuit-bending/")
I know this has been posted before, but for the newbies and those of us with short-term memory problems, here's a nice historical piece on early MMJ, inspired by the fact that I'm listening to The Helgeson Story right now...
Early Morning
This weekend, My Morning Jacket will make a triumphant homecoming, playing for thousands in their native city. It didn't start out that way, of course. We talked to the people who were there at the beginning.
Peter Berkowitz and Joseph Lord
My Morning Jacket leader Jim James wasn't always Jim James. To those who grew up with him, he was and will always be Jim Olliges of Hikes Point, Louisville, Ky. With MMJ poised to play its biggest Louisville show ever on Saturday at Waterfront Park, we take you back to the beginning, when a big gig meant playing for 20 friends at a local pizza parlor.
Ben Blandford played bass in Month of Sundays, a band he formed with Jim Olliges, Dave Givan and Aaron Todovich. Olliges and Todovich were the principal songwriters.
We all grew up together in Hikes Point. We went to school together. Around age 13 or 14, we just started talking about making music together, making a band. We didn't know what we were doing. We just started getting together at Dave Givan's house, in his garage, and found our instruments one way or another. Every week, whether it was 90 degrees or 10 degrees, we'd be in there.
Danny Cash was a friend of Olliges and Todovich, and later played keyboards in My Morning Jacket.
We went up to Highland Grounds on Baxter and saw his band play. It was Aaron and Jim and Aaron's older brother, Mike, singing. Their friends Ben and Dave were playing bass and drums. Any coffee shop back in the '90s was open to kids who would come in and buy an espresso. That was sophomore, junior year, maybe. 1992, '93, something like that. They were called Chains of My Own at that point -- it was a lot of spoken word from Aaron's brother, a real high school kind of thing. But then Aaron's brother said, "Um, I don't want to do this anymore." Aaron was, like, "I don't wanna do it," so Jim was the next in line to do vocals because he was already playing guitar. So he (Olliges) just kind of took over and they became Month of Sundays.
Ben Blandford
I think Jim was always interested in vocals. When we were kids, different people sang. I guess at some point, Jim was ready to be the vocalist. When you're 15 and you're on stage, 100 people looking at you, you'll be uncomfortable. The older Jim got, the more comfortable he got, and the more he was able to command that role as the front person for a band.

Thank you for this one, Johnny. Some seriously heavy and emotional situations seem to have created what we know as My Morning Jacket today...I didn't know about half of that stuff.
I've always associated TTF with feelings of pain, or overcoming emotional pain- at least that's how I personally relate to it. Coming to know the early history definitely helps to understand that album or what led to it, and maybe even explain why the earliest tunes aren't played very often anymore.
Glad you enjoyed the read. Ready for more?

Oh man, William Bowers. He wrote one of the best articles about MMJ ever in Oxford American in 2004, called "I Think I'm Going to Hell," subtitled "A Descent into My Morning Jacket Fandom." I ran across it while googling the phrase "My Boring Racket," which I had heard was uttered by Jeff Tweedy while MMJ was opening for them (still love Wilco). It was mentioned here long ago as one of the most important early publications about the band, and used to be linked directly from this website, but has since disappeared. The version I found is digitized at Google Books (http://books.google.com/books?id=QYHUExudAdoC&pg=PA41&dq=%22throw+down%22&sig=wu9KnwjqfwFpMk3Q7AI2Y4ym15c#v=onepage&q=%22throw%20down%22&f=false) from a compilation of music writing from that year (guest editor Mickey Hart!) and is incomplete with two pages missing. But what I read was so awesome, I found the compilation on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=books&linkCode=qs&keywords=0306813807) and bought it -- for $0.01 (shipping $4). Lots of other good articles in there that I haven't read yet too.

Awesome, cool to see that picture. Also interesting that Da Capo got the date wrong, it's listed in the credits as being from April 2004. My favorite quote: "Is it not just plainly obvious that My Morning Jacket is the greatest band in the world?"
The line about At Dawn being listenable when friends are over or when you'd give anything for friends to come over is beautifully written, not to mention outrageously true. One of the best parts about that album is that its always a good choice.

Just came across this. Forgive me if it's been posted. I don't really think the title of this is fair, though. I wouldnt say a lot of these guys are underrated. I think bassists, in general, are underrated, but as far as bassists, these are some pretty damn good ones that I thought got lots of respect?
Anway, congrats to TTT for being underrated! ;D
edit: maybe I should have read the VERY first sentence of this article before I posted...

Jim James: The Band
The Band were a profound influence on My Morning Jacket, says frontman James. "We always looked up to them. It's so rare to find a group that followed their impulses and didn't give a fuck about the trends of the day. That really speaks to me."
1. "It Makes No Difference" 1978
I'll never forget seeing Rick Danko sing this in The Last Waltz. He could be a goofball and a heartbreaker, sometimes at once.
2. "Up on Cripple Creek" 1969
Superfunky; you can tell they had a deep love for soul, funk, every kind of music.
3. "The Unfaithful Servant" 1969
Another of my favorite Danko songs. When I'm in Woodstock, I visit his grave to pay my respects to his massive spirit.
4. "Whispering Pines" 1969
This is filled with such pain, but it contains that tint of hope.
5. "Yazoo Street Scandal" (Basement Tapes version) 1975
Psychedelic funk, with Levon Helm just crushing it. The recording is fucking nasty, dark and dirty, and his voice sounds so fucked up.
6. "Don't Ya Tell Henry" (Basement Tapes version) 1975
I saw Levon do this not long ago, and he still had the energy and spirit of a young child.
7. "Tears of Rage" 1968
Richard Manuel's vocal here is one of the greatest ever captured. There's something about this that's so pure.
8. "Don't Do it" (The Last Waltz version) 1978
The original is by Marvin Gaye, who's maybe my biggest singing influence, and they give it just as much power as his version, if not more.
9. "I Shall Be Released" 1968
One of the most important songs ever written, by Dylan or anyone else. I see this version almost like I see Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" - like Dylan wrote it just for Manuel to sing.
10. "The Weight" 1968
Back when My Morning Jacket formed, this was one of the first songs we tried, because the harmonies are so great and stacked in such a cool way. But we couldn't do it, couldn't nail 'em. We sang this one with Levon at his house recently, which is pretty fucking crazy.
Awesome, Johnny! Thanks for sharing this...despite all of the many influences on MMJ, The Band seems to always shine through the most in my mind. Especially when live...seeing them cover The Band is a dream of mine.
Whoooooaaaaa nice find indeed!!! Sweet info!
Ah, when in Woodstock.......... :) I'm just not gonna start on that again, 'tis hard to stop......... "#10" about sums it up though.......

"Asked what, if any, of today's bands might warrant the 20-year treatment two decades from now, Crowe settled on My Morning Jacket. "

I just came to post that they're #3. Have to say it kind of upsets me that out of all the incredible new music of 2011, Fleet foxes got #2. I was happy to see wilco, MMJ, and middle brother in the top 10, as those are my 3 favorite.
Am I crazy or did I not see iron and wine in there?
Iron & Wine is #12. Good list in general, IMO.
good list in general BUT
imo (humble or not) no list is complete without including both Go Go Boots by Drive-By Truckers and Here We Rest by Jason Isbell.
Both of those make my top 10
Hayes Carll KMAG YOYO should also be in there.
and maybe i just don't get it but bon iver puts me to sleep.
Uncut magazine has MMJ listed at #35. I was disappointed to see that Q magazine didn't even list Circuital. However, no one ever completely agrees with these lists. They are purely arbitrary.
A recent review of Circuital, fairly excellent but for misplaced criticism of earlier albums.

The complete answer to this question is pretty cool IMHO as well as the entire interview.
Not only is his music great but when you read or see his interviews, Jim is as articulate, and thoughtful as any musician out there today.

In early June 2011, after filing a handful of trademarks for his cloud-based service idea, Young traveled to the Bonnaroo Festival to perform with Buffalo Springfield. While he was there, he invited fellow musicians into his Cadillac for a Pono demo, including members of Mumford & Sons and My Morning Jacket, and videotaped their reactions for a potential marketing campaign.
"Neil's premise is cool, and I think it's exciting as a traveling musician," My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James tells Rolling Stone. However, he adds a caveat: "I think that's somewhere that he has to be careful: I've already bought Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' a lot of times. Do I have to buy it again?"

Quote"Yeah, I'm putting a band together to do it. We'll probably do a few things when it comes out in February, but I really want it to be out at least a couple of weeks before we tour it. Because I want people to have a chance to digest it. When you tour immediately, it's kind of fun for people watching who don't know it, but it's kind of weird too. Especially for something like this where I've never put out a solo record before, because it's not like I have five solo records and people will know the older stuff. When we do the tour, I'm sure we'll do some of the My Morning Jacket songs, but I want people to have had a couple of weeks to know this record and want to see it live."

"Uhh, I want it to sound like it's grey and it's purple and it's up in the clouds," and they're like, "It's a B diminished seventh chord, with an augmented fifth." You know, all that kind of technical talk."
Jim James is really sounding like John Lennon here. I remember seeing an interview with George Martin comparing/contrasting John & Paul and he said something along the lines of, "when we recorded For the Benefit of Mr Kite, John just said he wanted to feel like he was in a carnival, he wanted to taste the sawdust of the carnival grounds".. Where as Paul would get completely technical.
A funny thought to me.
As a huge Bruce fan, I loved this last section!
You're a big Neil Young fan. Are you into his current work?
The last Neil Young record I really enjoyed was Prairie Wind. I thought that was a fucking beautiful record. I like everything that Neil does. Neil's a big hero of mine, but I really came to this realization: I saw Springsteen in Louisville, and I've never been giant Springsteen fan. I only liked things here or there and I wasn't like a giant fan. I saw him in Louisville and he was fucking phenomenal! It was like seeing the sun shine for the first time or something. It was like he was so positive and it felt like every motherfucker in that place was his best friend. You know he touched everybody. He was crowd surfing. He was fucking running around and shit. When you see Neil and Bob, they're, like, all pissed and you feel like they don't give a fuck if you're there or not. I'm so sick of that, and seeing Bruce I was like, "Fucking-a, man! Thank you! I paid a lot of money to be at this fucking show and you care I'm here." It was just, like, such a revelation.

I wonder if that's part of why during the PC and Boston shows, Jim interacted with the crowd even more than he has in the past. Penny  knows what I mean!
That was a great read. I thought the interviewer asked some great questions. Jim wasn't specific about the dark period. It's great to know what his hopes are for MMJ for the future.
Regarding two of the above posts, I cut and pasted the Bruce paragraph two my two friends that love The Boss. Very cool that Jim's mentality is more like Bruce and he appreciates the people at his concerts.
I love how Jim describes things and has a feel for what he wants. And Carl is more technical and maybe "properly schooled." But regarding the Beatles, I don't know how technical Paul could be since he can't read or write music. It was interesting when he discussed how that pertained to writing his classical music in more recent years.

I noticed that too, but thought maybe he was just stoked to be playing PC. Once I read the RS interview, it dawned on me that quite possibly there was more to his interactions with the crowd than just being happy to be there.
I know MMJ tix aren't as expensive as Bruce tix, but I definitely had the same feeling at PC that JJ had at Bruce; that with all the money we all spent, JJ and the band definitely cared that we were there. It was noticeable to me then, and now I think maybe I know why.
That could account for all the "Muchos" and fingering going on :drum:
love my neil young but I DO AGREE... neil doesn't look interested on stage which is part of why i love the man... bruce is a whole other kettle of fish.. a different type show... the new MMJ q&a gets me excited.

just got done reading this over lunch and was coming to forum to make sure it had been shared. Most complete and detailed interview/preview/review of all the ones i've read. Well done CoS.
This just occupied the first 45 minutes of my time at the office this lovely Monday morning. What a fantastic article and some fine pics of JJ, as well.

I am so excited for this CD!

"Finally, what are the plans for the next My Morning Jacket record?
JJ: We have plans and windows to get together. I have tons of ideas and things churning. We are putting a schedule together and getting the time worked out. So, an album is in the works and
it might come out before the end of the year, but it depends where the songs want to go. I start with all these grand ideas but you never know until you start going down the path, whether they will be rejected or embraced."

Of course, RoL&SoG was finished over a year ago (so I'm told), so...

hmmm..i usually read it cover to cover and i hadn't seen that..
I don't think he actually says her name, I think he says something about Kurt Cobain's crazy girlfriend
I think there is a very recent RS interview out there somewhere. I held off on reading it thinking it would be in the actual paper issue but it wasn't. Helpful, I know.

"ELLE: Is Jim James a fashionisto?
JJ: I feel like fashion is one of the most beautiful forms of art we have. It's a form of art that every person gets to possess and create for themselves. I take it really seriously, and I really love figuring out things to wear. It's funny looking back at things I've worn, like, 'Oh damn! I wish I wouldn't have worn that' or 'I did a pretty good job with that!' Like anything else it's a beautiful form of expression."
Seriously?!? I had no idea that those brown pants with a hole in the knee was all part of a carefully orchestrated outfit. I thought for sure it was from the many knee slides across the stage. :drum:

It was pretty funny reading the Billboard down and dirty interview with all of the colorful language after reading a totally sanitized version in Elle. I wonder if Jim changed his persona or Elle did some heavy editing.

So not a fashionista! You can't be a fashionista if you wear the same black shirt with the same rips in the elbows for six months running. I will never forget what that did to my soul!!!! And my imagination about his manly elbows that had to burst forth from their restrictive black sleeves. I'm still traumatized by this how many months after he finally quit wearing that shirt.
I think he does these things on purpose to upset women. We have an innate need to take care of men who cannot dress themselves. It's biological. I worked for years with a bachelor who never had his shirt buttoned right or his suspenders were always crooked and he wore duck tape on his plastic flip flops with socks. I spent every morning fussing and fixing his clothes for him.

Poor Fully  I do feel ya. However, one of the most stressful times of of the day for me is figuring out WTH I'm going to wear to work each day. The simplicity probably helps our dear Jim focus on more important things
Did you notice his suit changes colors (lighting) on those Williamsburg videos? That suit wasn't maroon Nashville. Ha.
He has a brown suit that he wore on Fallon. I think he has two or three different ones.
Also, I definitely have trouble getting dressed myself, but I can button my shirts correctly and I don't wear holy clothes. I'm not very holy either, for that matter.

Well that's true...Jim's current inside-out
holy shirt has been going for a while now. But at least this solo deal has a neat prospective with all those suits. Not to mention his new stage presence style

Jim James Has "Big Mountain of Ideas" Ready for Next My Morning Jacket Album

Jim James may be out on tour promoting his debut solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God , but the singer's says that he's ready to reunite with My Morning Jacket and begin work on the follow-up to 2011's Circuital .
"I've just got a big mountain of ideas that I'm sifting through and we just need to get together and start hitting them around...and see what happens and which ones work and which ones don't," he tells ABC News Radio. "But I'm super excited about it."
The singer adds that he would like to release the band's seventh studio album in 2014, but it will all depend on how the recording sessions go. "We're hoping to get together later in the year do some recording...and it just depends on how quick that goes or how slow it goes," he reveals. "It's always so hard to know until you get in there."
James has solo tour dates scheduled until July 28, so it's unlikely that MMJ will any get time to work on anything new before then.

Quote"I was originally in Riverdance, and they saw I had rhythm and that I could use my feet. I applied my Riverdance techniques to the drum set and they were like, 'Wow, would you come play?' And I told 'em no, made 'em fester for about a year. Then they asked me again and I said yes."

Thanks, Sara. I love these old articles. This made me laugh:
They'll keep driving around in their van-except for Jim, who is banned from the driver's seat, not in the name of star treatment but because, Danny says, "for most people, the brake pedal has varying degrees of breaking pressure, but for Jim, I think it's like a button, either on or off."
Thanks Sara! I really loved this article! Especially in the authors trouble he has in describing MMJ to people not in the know. It really accurately describes what I go through every time I try to get a friend into them.

In the current issue, there were 4 mentions of Jim/MMJ throughout. There was a blip about Americanarama, a blip about the Super Soul Jam, their ranking as the #10 best live act out right now and then the mini interview with Jim James (I can post the text of that later) about what goes on in his head during a show.
4 mentions!!! That's awesome, seems like since Jim released his solo album, Rolling Stone mag has been talking about Jim/MMJ more.

Nice find right there, it always amazes me how no one has heard of this band even though they get good pub from most of the magazines out there.

I think this is a new pre-show article, but a lot of it seems familiar. His reference to how awful his Iowa City stage fall in 2008 was makes me wonder if he'll ever come back... face his demons. It's been five years. We shall see.

Now I can finally figure out the elusive chord changes at the end of each verse. I've been looking for a good video of Jim playing TIWTCWY on the Omnichord for years!

"You sat in with My Morning Jacket during their One Big Holiday festival. How was that?"
"I had a ball with those guys this summer; they're a wonderful band. They're a rock band with a pedal steel in it. There aren't many of those. And they all listen to each other; they're not your classic jam band per se, but they can play. We had a bunch of fun and I'm looking forward to having a bunch more. And to boot, they're recording in Stinson Beach [California], right over the hill from where I am in Mill Valley, so I'm looking forward to going out there and raining on their parade a little bit."

So does this mean that MMJ are not finished recording their new album yet then?

Some intel from folks at OBH talking to Carl? Bo? Tom? suggested they've recorded about 18 new songs so far and plan to return to Stinson Beach to record some more. I'm guessing the album will be a fall/winter release. Elsewhere, Tucker Martine on Instagram perhaps, I got the vibe they were done recording, done with that space, but now...
