Title: A Letter to My Morning Jacket (Evil Urges Review)
Post by: Jon B. on Mar 29, 2010, 12:05 PM
My Morning Jacket,
As an avid consumer of new and progressive music, I would like to begin by saying that I have been waiting for you guys dive into the (for lack of a better term) "mainstream river" for years. Your album Z was close; being both musically complex and highly emotional but it was completely non-relatable. While a few songs, like (Wordless Chorus), blew me away the majority of the album was just beyond the public's taste. I read good reviews about Evil Urges and expected a more refined product from a manufacture I respected but could not quite relate to. After my first tour through Evil Urges I was simultaneously turned on and abruptly turned off by the lineup.
It started out great (Evil Urges) then drifted into the unknown instantly (Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.1). (Highly Suspicious) is in my opinion your best song to date and deserved a lot more crossover radio play then it received. This song represents the formula you need to evolve on to fully connect with the masses. (I'm Amazed) lost me again just as fast as (Thank You Too!) framed a wonderfully new kind of love song for future bands to dissect and elaborate on. (Sec Walkin) was a welcome blast from the past; sounding like a cover of a non-existent track from an early Neil Young album. (Two Halves) killed my buzz but (Librarian) fully revived it and me and is an excellent modern slow ride (letting your hair down optional but recommended).
I have the misfortune of declaring that I felt the next three tracks: (Look at You), (Aluminum Park), and (Remnants), bring you right back to the "non-relatable" territory you were charging through on Z. I felt like I could maybe let those songs into my life but I would have to force the entry instead of just letting them flow in; which is obviously the desired effect. In your defense, the last two tracks (12/13) on the album are irrefutably divine. (Smokin From Shootin) and (Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.2) took me on a journey I still haven't come back from...truly inspirational and obviously inspired.
As this "who am I?" album ended, I sat back and realized that if a band can blow my mind with just the final (nearly) 15 minutes of their searing hot and simultaneously bitter cold Evil Urges; I can't wait to see you fully and intelligently act on these urges that have thus far led you half way to the promise land. Fuck walking in circles; time to tap into the milk and honey.
Sincerely;  A critical fan with high(ly suspicious) hopes for the future of My Morning Jacket; Jon B.

I'm sure the boys can accommodate you. Have you listened to any pre Z?? These guys are too good for mainstream. :)

You've been waiting for them to become mainstream for years and you're just now getting Evil Urges?  There's something fishy about this letter.  It kinda weirds me out.

I hope MMJ stays the hell away from mainstream. I find all the albums to be relatable and have a hard time understanding why you would want them to sound mainstream. Remember what happened to KOL?

"(Highly Suspicious) is in my opinion your best song to date"

I have an issue with this. Seriously? Steam Engine, Lay Low, PWW, OBH, The Way That He Sings and on the same disc Smokin and Touch Me part 2.  I could go on. I like Highly Suspicious but in no way is it the best song by MMJ.

As you can tell I really don't like other people's opinions. lol

The whole letter is funny, but I find it particularly odd Jon B is waiting for them to have that mainstream sound, yet the one's he disliked on EU (Im Amazed, Thank You Too, Look At You, Aluminum Park) are probably the most accessible songs on any album of theirs let alone EU, and the songs he loves (Evil Urges, Highly Suspicious, Librarian, Touch Me Once) are probably the least mainstream or accessible

yeah, for a guy who claims to embrace all things normal, it is a really WEIRD letter.

The fact that he hasn't come back to respond to any of our comments makes me think someone's just having fun with us.

so it's alright for people to call me "crazy" and a "douche bag" and to ask me why I am posting here if I have these thoughts but that is the EXACT reason why I am posting here. I want to LOVE MMJ and not just LIKE them. Everyone who is here already loves the band but I am trying to tell them how to connect with more people(conceded I know but still a valid opinion). And if they don't care I'm fine with that but if you are turned off by my review then FUCK YOU. I'm not reviewing you. And after going though "Z" and "Evil Urges" again I solidify my statements...so close to a perfect album :)

By now, if you're still "wanting" to LOVE them, perhaps they're just not for you.  You really shouldn't have to try to love anything; it's either there or it's not.

so... you want the band to change who they are & how they do what they do so you can love them & also so they can connect with more people?  frankly, in my opinion, there's more than enough soulless music out there being pushed on the masses.

not to be rude, but who the fuck are YOU?  even if you are somebody of some kind of importance, so what.  i think it's beyond conceited for you to think that you "know better" than the band.  did you happen to consider that maybe this is exactly where they want to be?  perhaps they like the fact that they have such a widespread fanbase of people who dig what they do (and defend them vehemently) and want nothing to do with being fake, or putting out something they don't believe in just to gain popularity or more success.  maybe their definition of success is different than yours?

i think for the majority of us (here) who already love this band do so because their music speaks to us.  we may not be able to fully descibe how or why in words, it's just something you feel.  some of us felt it from the very beginning & others found their way at varying stages.  whether it was thru one of their albums, a friend dragging them to a show or that american dad episode - at some point, something clicked.  it just happens.  you can't control it.

apart from all the jabs & knee jerk reactions to your post - i'm sure we all wish you loved them too.  sorry.
