Title: London Show - November 7th?
Post by: justnoah on Oct 19, 2011, 06:25 AM
Hi all -

Long time MMJ fan here in Europe for about 6 months and just had my travel schedule line up well to see the London show on November 7th (and it's a good thing since Paris isn't on the current tour nor was it on the summer itinerary either).

Wondering who else is going from here?  Also, I have some questions about the venue -- if anybody has been to the Roundhouse before I'd love some suggestions on what type of ticket to get.  It seems that the reserved seats that are left aren't so good -- so go for standing room?  And as discussed here MMJ doesn't seem to have taken off in the UK (yet) so also wondering if just turning up and finding a ticket for sale there might be another way to go?  suggestions welcome and also open for meeting up for a pint before the show if anybody is interested -- I can't believe that I get to see HATH *AND* MMJ in 2 weeks!

Hi - definitely go for main area standing rather than seats at the roundhouse. It's a cool venue, very unique but I recal it has a lot of columns which get ion the way of some of the seats. I reckon MMJ will be awesome there - if nothing else cos it's a pretty small place.

Definitely standing to get a good view.  The Roundhouse is pretty intimate in GA - get down the front and enjoy it...

Excellent -- thanks all.  Have booked a standing ticket and will plan to be there early enough to queue up for the front.  Still up for meeting for a pint before the show if people are interested.

I'm traveling to London from New Orleans and scored tickets for this show.  There's a great pub called the Enterprise (according to google) Anyone wanna meet up before hand?  Probrably get there around 4pmish.

I'm up for meeting at The Enterprise.  I probably won't get there until closer to 4:30 or 5.

Sounds like a plan.  I'll be there!  I'm about to head to the airport so I'll check back on this thing once I land to see if anyone else wants to join in.

Sounds like there might be a few of us there tomorrow late afternoon/early evening.  I'm planning on getting in line fairly early to get a good spot and catch HATH.

I'm about 5'10 (thats just under 2 meters for those of you on the metric system.. like the Swedish ;).  I have brown hair and a beard with a bit more grey in it than I'd like to admit sometimes.  Keep a lookout.

I'm starting to get fired up for this now. Somerset House was my first MMJ gig but something seemed a bit off kilter for me that night, probably due to the fact that we got through the gate at the exact second they kicked off with VD and were stuck at the back.

If we get either one of At Dawn or What A Wonderful Man (or both) I will die.

Doors are at normal time tonight right? Don't want to be caught out by an early start!

Extended curfew! RAGING! 40 minute delay while the fire brigade checked things out, then back to normal. Even ended up in a slightly better position in the "second half".

We got "At Dawn", "It Beats 4 U", "Wonderful" and a killer "Mahgeetah". I'm tired. Bye.

Yeah, though I seemed to be the only person in seventh heaven ;) It was spoilt for me a little bit though as it was the first song after the restart and the people around were just chatting, on their phones or doing that annoying "twisting and turning" thing that people do when they're frantically looking for their mates.

I loved the gig, much better than Somerset House. Slowly I'm getting more into the introspective side of MMJ. Excellent all round. The sound was first class and how they can go from a pindrop hush to blowing off the roof is outstanding.

It was frustrating with the fire delay and no communication or organisation by the venue staff. If a fire had broken out in the main auditorium, alot of people could have been hurt. No one knew what was going on and we were all just shepherded out into the loading dock. No one knew if the gig would continue or if it would be rescheduled. A fire truck had to get through the bodies in the loading dock as well, again there could have been an accident. All in all a very botched job. One funny point though was that the house lights came on half way through I'm Amazed and it seemed like it was part of the show - you know how bands sometimes do to involve the crowd. With about a minute of the song left, the power to the PA was killed. It was funny to see the band still rocking out, totally oblivious, with just the stage sound coming out.

I figured something was up when the house lights came on AND the PA packed up. Just wish they could've actually anounced something.

Anyway, some piccies from last night here if anyones interested:

If you were at the back you could hear the alarm going and sound people going crazy before they called it to a halt. Although the lead sound went I guess Jim was still getting feedback in the monitors, hence he carried on.

Thought they were gonna come back with a nine minute version of 'Tyrone'........

Well, it was almost my first MMJ show. I saw them 3 years ago in a festival, but the setlist was so short and the audience wasn´t very involved in the gig.

I went to The Roundhouse on my own from Spain (when are this dudes going to set some dates in decent venues in my country?) so i had plenty of time of thinking about how it could be. Obviously, i get so nervous and excited as i was walking to the venue through Camden Town.

The delay was a shame. I managed to get in front of the set of Jim James. I could almost touch him, and watching his facial expressions during the 4 first songs was amazing. Unfortunately, i couldn´t get the same place when the gig was resumed, but i still was in a good position.

I´m glad the gig was worthy of the travel i´ve done, and where ever they play across Europe, i´ll do the effort to attend as many gigs as i could. I´m afraid that would be the only way to listen the so many songs i would like the have played and they didn´t.

Now it´s time to get some rest and watch Okonokos, it´s been a long trip today.

No one knew what was going on and we were all just shepherded out into the loading dock. No one knew if the gig would continue or if it would be rescheduled. A fire truck had to get through the bodies in the loading dock as well, again there could have been an accident. All in all a very botched job. With about a minute of the song left, the power to the PA was killed. It was funny to see the band still rocking out, totally oblivious, with just the stage sound coming out.
I think they did a pretty good job. It was clear that the audience was in no immediate danger otherwise they could have killed power to the band's amps and sent somebody on stage to tell them to stop. As it was they switched on the houselights and waited a while before turning off the PA and letting the band reach the end of the song. No need to risk causing panic if you don't need to.

I don't think the security staff themselves were that great though. They were hired in from outside and I'm guessing didn't know the venue well enough - they didn't know where the correct assembly point was and they didn't know that the back driveway had to be kept clear for emergency vehicles. I expect that an evacuation is very rare so the management will be using the opportunity to think about what could be done better next time.

The only bit that sucked a bit was that my friend (who has a disability) needed to sit in the warm after 20mins standing outside so we went to a pub. We were convinced at this stage that the show wouldn't restart and that they'd offer us a refund. Then when we headed out and towards the bus stop we were a bit gutted to hear music coming from the Roundhouse as we'd missed 20 minutes! You can blame the venue staff for not keeping us more informed when we were standing outside but really their priority would have been making sure everyone was safely out of the building (and rightly so!)

This aside, really good gig. Particularly I thought it sounded beautiful - both due to the band and because they bothered to bring a decent PA (why can't all bands do this!?).

I suppose that it's too much to hope that someone taped the show? I looked at the review from The Guardian and it sounded like it would have been a great show to hear.

Sadly, there ain´t many Jacket fans in the south of Spain. Or at least, they hide themselves very well.

The one above Patrick is a drum overhead and the ones on the crowd are for their in-ear monitors, though like most bands they probably have a vault of recordings!

What a great time!

Met up before the show with laststop at the Enterprise Pub across the road.  Plowed through 4 beers and headed over to try and get a good spot shortly after the doors opened.  Was pleasantly surprised to be able to walk all the way up to the 2nd row and take a seat on the floor while waiting for Head and the Heart to start.  What a beautiful room!  The only other time I'd been in the Roundhouse was for the Royal Institute of British Architects annual awards show a few years back and didn't get a feeling for the space.  Great venue for a gig though.

While waiting I met some people from their fan community and the guy who was traveling with them selling merchandise.  Nice people.  Their set was good -- hard being an opening band but people seemed engaged and were liking it.

Thought the MMJ show was excellent.  Yes, it was great to NOT hear Circuital right after Victory Dance :) -- a good sign of things to come.  It was nice being so relatively intimate compared to the large MMJ shows I've seen in North America -- especially being up in the front row.  Great to meet Kajsa and SaraBananaBear; we spent the time outside in the rain together.  I was pretty annoyed by the fire alarm because the communication from the venue was so bad.  Also, with the way they let people back in -- those of us who had devoted the time to get good spots were a bit out of luck with other people who had taken our spaces.  Eventually got a good spot but had to fight for it.  But once the show started up it didn't matter and the whole rest of the show was top notch.  Kudos to the band for picking up right where they'd left off.  I also have to hand it to the sound -- really excellent -- and despite being up close my ears were not ringing when I left.

All in all a GREAT night and I'm really happy I was able to be there.  Thanks to all of you for making it such a good night.
