JACKET FEST NOLA 2012!
Tag 'em and bag 'em! I would expect them to play the second weekend, perhaps in Thursday headlining role Wilco occupied this year. Aren't the guys rumored to play Memphis in May? If so, the second weekend makes more sense.

Yeah, I'd expect to see them headline Acura and that Wilco spot makes sense. They'd be a great Friday headliner, though. Or Saturday. Or Sunday. :D
Full lineup due at midnight (CT, I believe). We should know which weekend then.

There MUST be! Nothing will stand between me and tickets to that after having to stand outside of Pres. Hall in 2010 trying to listen thru cracks in the doors ;D
Hopefully PHJB and Yim will have collaborative sets like Voodoo too! Good times to be had in April, good times indeed :)

levon helm band w/ mavis staples and sharon jones and the dap kings, pres hall 50th anniversay JAM!!! Gary Clark, Jr., Bunnie Wailer, Herbie Hancock....some serious decision making will need to be done on these weekends :o
I just might have to attend all of them.
I think we're due another headliner (or two). Rumor all day has been the special announcement (which never came) is Bruce.

Supposedly Bruce isn't playing any gigs till he plays the European shows so I kept reading he was OUT, but who knows! This is part of the fun of it! I'd love to take the week off and do both weekends...but I gotta go with the MMJ, Steve Earle, Eagles weekend..(yes EAGLES!)

See everyone there! I think Beale Street in Memphis is happening as well so schedule accordingly!
Also, please post if you hear anything about a show at Pres Hall the evening of the Jazz Fest show - still bummed I missed out on this last time!
This would mean MMJ are out for Hanout right? Radius clause and all? NOLA and Gulf Shores can't be any more than 180 miles apart.
May have to start looking into this!

Love me some NOLA Jazz Fest love. Need to get my Maple leaf on anyway!

serendipitous.. just locked in a 2nd weekend hotel and flight last week. Really need them to pull Sat or Sun though. Beyond MMJ pretty stoked with lineup as well.
Getting the Pres Hall tix will be a crap shoot, but I'll be checking every day from here until the fest so if I see something, i'll PM people on this thread...they'll sell out in one day if they do something special.

If they play Pres. Hall again, I'll be walking around with a laptop at all times. Missed the onsale last time b/c of a meeting...tickets will be tough regardless...very, very small room. The percentage of tickets to RC members would mean maybe 10 tix total. Doubt there will be a Roll Call pre-sale if the show happens.
Anyhow, I'm hoping for a bigger night time show. The Joy Theatre will be available during Jazz Fest and maybe either the State or the Saenger will be in play...Or the Mahalia Jackson would be nice too. At this point, my hope of them playing Tip's is fantasy. ...or Roll Call Memebers show at Tip's? ;) :)

Reserved a room at the Crown Plaza across the street! Thought about renting a house but would be too complicated. If you're gonna book, hurry. CP was one of the few you could get refundable rooms, most of the others are non-ref.

We'll be staying at the Hampton on Carondelet. Nice hotel, great location. A little pricey but that's been my NO home for 17 years now. Can't break tradition. Another random tradition... I've always eaten at Popeye's chicken at least once when I go. This is weird because I work less than 2 miles from a Popeye's and never go. When get to NO, I can't stay away.

so one of my very good long time (phish) friends has never gone to NOLA or JF *gasp* and was after me to go this year a few months back. we booked for 1st weekend but after the lineup was announced i proclaimed that 1st weekend looked like a pile of poop compared to 2nd weekend and we must change ... so we did  we were originally booked @ the Crown Plaza where Penny is and i think it's been changed to 2nd weekend as well. i really really wanted to get a house. after my 1st JF in .. forever ago .. i decided that would be the way to roll but alas, it is a pain in the ass and you really need to plan almost a year out or have alot of dough and a solid group behind you. so hotel it is !! i'm hoping we have more come with us to help shave the cost b/c right now it looks like my share will be $500 for 4 nights :o i've been dragging ass on planning for this and told my friend .. talk to me after the new year. come on big bonus .. mama's got to get to JF !!
OH and if there is a show @ Pres. Hall during that weekend .. my ass will be there come hell or high water :D

If they play Jazz Fest and Memphis in May will anyone be makin' that trip? I wonder if those back to back shows would make it less likely for a late nighter...
Either way I hope it's at the Mahalia Jackson! Tips would be unreal...they played there in 07 I think. So glad to see the forumites jumping on this :bath:
Easy-are you talking Beale Fest to Jazz Fest or straight Memphis shows?
If any of you wanna link up and split rooms, I think Seth wants in on this, too.
Also, they haven't added that other headliner yet for the 2nd weekend.
Also, trying to convince TEO and Crazylove to go!
(and ps, if you SEE or HEAR of any Pres Hall special show tix with the Jacket before it's officially announced, might not be good to post it ASAP, maybe you can PM us or buy up the tix first that way we're all covered before it's posted on here officially?)
It's possible that I would do both the Memphis music fest show and the JazzFest show. My +1 lives in Memphis. It looks like they are both on the same weekend. We are still in the planning stage right now so I don't know. I'm also going to be a jerk by missing my niece's college graduation that weekend. But I'll give her a nice present. Graduations are boring.

Yep, I meant whichever Memphis festival that is allegedly happening on that same weekend as the Jazz Fest show- sry bout that heha. I'm just trying to figure out how I'm gonna go about doing this.

Tickets for night time shows -- if Pres. Hall does the Midnight Preserves series again and includes MMJ again, tix will be tough to get. Somebody posted a link to the Beale Street Music Fest facebook page. I don't remember where, but apparently they have all of the bands that will be on the lineup "liked" which usually means that's who is going to appear. I always thought that this was part of Memphis in May so I thought it was the same weekend as Jazz Fest since that weekend is in May. I could be wrong though. I haven't really researched it.

Beale Street is the second weekend of Jazz Fest next year, May 4-6 (something is up with the Beale Street Website and they still have the 2011 dates up). I talked to Bo after the Houston show and he said they are playing Jazz Fest and Beale Street in 2012. I do not know when the line-up will be announced, but it sounds like they will be playing Jazz Fest and Beale Street back to back, so hopefully (as previously mentioned here) Beale Street comes first to increase our chances of an aftershow in New Orleans!

Speculation is they're going to close out Acura on Thursday, with ZBB Friday, Eagles on Saturday and Foos on Sunday. I'll be disappointed if they don't make the 50th anny set with PHJB on Sunday, though :'(

Piss. This changes everything. Do you think this is pretty credible speculation? I was looking over some of the VIP packages and one of them said premium seating for the Acura stage. It then listed some the bands that will include. MMJ was not one of them, but it did say "many more". I know that's not much, I was just trying to do some digging.
Makes sense to me that the Eagles and Foos would get the top spots on Saturday and Sunday. I suppose there's a chance MMJ could play Friday, though. Still doesn't bode well for aftershows and such if they're committed to Beale Street. Wilco closed out the Gentilly Stage (2nd largest stage) two years ago. This year, they headlined the Acura Stage (largest) on Thursday, so it would make sense that MMJ follows suit (as they closed Gentilly in 2010).
As an aside, if you'd like my personal opinion, the special JF packages aren't worth the money. The viewing stands aren't that close to the stage, unless you get the one that gets you pit access. Even then, I find them pricey for what you get. You can get relatively close with just a bit of effort.

As an aside, if you'd like my personal opinion, the special JF packages aren't worth the money. The viewing stands aren't that close to the stage, unless you get the one that gets you pit access. Even then, I find them pricey for what you get. You can get relatively close with just a bit of effort.
Yeah, but you still get a cool lanyard that says, "look at me, i'm VIP, mofos", right? ;D I was just doing some sleuthing, but I appreciate your opinion, nonetheless.
Your theory makes sense. I just had not even accounted for Thursday to be a possibility. I wasn't planning on going until Friday. How far out do they typically announce times?
I think we usually see the grids in February or March. Don't hold me to that...I usually go every year, both weekends, so I rarely pay attention to the schedule until a few days beforehand ;D
If I were a bettin' woman, I think we're going to see them on Thursday. Don't forget, they closed Gentilly AND did the legendary PH show that same night, so don't discount the aftershow possibility!

Tickets for night time shows -- if Pres. Hall does the Midnight Preserves series again and includes MMJ again, tix will be tough to get.
If this does happen again, I WILL get you a ticket this time. So regret that. :'(
Looks like Al Green has been announced as second weekend TBA. Verrrrrrrrry nice.
Thanks and no worries...it all worked out! I saw another show and got to hang out with you after and got to meet Patrick! Was a solid night! Plus, when I saw the movie...it was like watching a Lila-palooza!!

Makes sense to me that the Eagles and Foos would get the top spots on Saturday and Sunday. I suppose there's a chance MMJ could play Friday, though. LOL...I agree with Sass here. The VIP passes are not worth the money IMO, but if you get to Acura early and squeeze into the pit, you will be up front. The viewing stands are way off to the side...no one would see your cool lanyard. ;)
The Times Picayune hinted that Foo Fighters are either going to play on Gentilly Saturday or close out Sunday, but the Eagles are confirmed to play May 5th. I really hope Zac Brown Band plays Thursday and MMJ closes out Friday either way.
I'm wondering how the Neville Brothers fall into this. Could they close out the festival?? I'd personally like that a whole lot more than FF finishing off a jazz festival.
I would be SHOCKED if they put Foo Fighters on the Gentilly Stage. Shocked. I think Nevilles will close out Acura as always, but maybe The Eagles will get a longer set a la Neil Young a few years back (I think he got two hours pre-Nevilles).
They should include all-you-can-eat crawfish bread with the VIP pass...
i booked my flight for friday so i pray to God if they do play on friday its late late. i thought they would play on sat or sunday.
If they close out either stage on Friday, it'll probably be a 5:30 - 7:00 slot (Jazz Fest ends at 7 pm).
Crawfish Strudel > Crawfish Bread :D
Thanks everyone for the great info, especially those who live in New Orleans. I booked a hotel for Thur - Sun so I've got a place to stay but I can cancel before the end of April without penalty. I'm still not totally sure I'll make it. I think I'll only go if I can be sure to see MMJ at a second show in addition to the festival.
I love New Orleans (have visited twice) but I've never been to Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest. I worry a bit that the crowds will be overwhelming. I know having a lot of people celebrating at one time brings a lot of energy and that sounds like it could be a lot of fun if the logistics of being a visitor when its so crowded don't get in the way too much. I usually don't go to music festivals, because I almost always prefer to see the band I came for and then head somewhere more comfortable when its over. Jazz Fest is a little different for me because there are so many bands I'd love to hear and then there is all the local music that I consider a national treasure. The times I've been there not many of these well-known bands were playing or I didn't know where to go to see the really good lesser known bands. It seems visiting during Jazz Fest guarantees that I could hear all the New Orleans music I want. I know this post makes me seem a little stuffy, but I really do love to party, I just like being comfortable while I'm doing it. I can deal with a big crowd for a full day, but probably doing it for several days in a row would be more than I'd want.
If I go, my basic plan is to attend the festival on just the day MMJ plays, and then the other nights see shows in the clubs after the festival is over. From what I've gathered, one can still gorge themselves on music just going to the after-shows. Mostly what I'd like to see is local New Orleans music like Irma Thomas, Funky Meters, Kermit Ruffins, Dirty Dozen, some zydeco, etc. Wouldn't mind seeing stuff like Sharon Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Levon Helm, Grace Potter, etc, too.
How crazy-crowded will it be for MMJ's festival set? Would there be a spot with a little bit of space that isn't super far away from the stage?
How realistic is it to expect to see a bunch of the festival acts at the after-shows? Are most of those last minute deals, or is there a schedule announced ahead of time and can you get tickets ahead of time. I know people have kinda answered some of these questions already about hoped-for MMJ after-show, but I'm still wondering about how it works for other after-shows.
Any attempts at trying to answer these questions by folks who know would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Sounds like a good plan, Shug! There is MUCH more than enough music to feast on after the festival ends each night. I wouldn't worry about that at all.
I was at both of MMJ's shows last year, and at the festival you should be able to find a decent spot relatively close to the stage w/ room to spare. That is if a proportionally sized crowd shows up to the bigger stage this year. The only thing to think about is sound usually bleeds over from other stages if you sit too far away.
Last year I walked up to the Gentilly Stage for the show before MMJ's set and then nudged up to front row for MMJ no problem. I would expect a similar situation this year depending on who will be playing the other stage at the same time.
With regard to the after-shows, a lot of them are announced ahead of time, but there are always impromptu occurrences that materialize out of musicians meeting one another/knowing each other at the fest. Typically you can find tickets to after shows pretty easily (with the exception of Pres. Hall b/c it's so small). I have a feeling this year might be special due to the PHJB Jam that's going to happen during Weekend II. Hopefully in the coming months we'll hear more
Oh and don't worry about the crowds. Jazz Fest is one of the most laid-back and spacious festivals I've been to. Plenty room to sit/lay down/eat/dance/people watch. This year will be a big one, but it really is a comfortable environment. Hope to cross paths, and hope this helped
Thanks, easyryder for the encouragement! I'd really like my wife to experience New Orleans, and I feel I gotta go to Jazz Fest at least once. What better time than when MMJ is playing. And who knows how long all of this goodness will last? Gotta do the good stuff while its still good. Thanks for helping me decide I'm going to Jazz Fest this year!
And thanks in advance to Penny Lane, NoVa NoLa, Sassbox, etc for PMing those on this thread about MMJ after-party info as it arises. Thank you, good people! :dankk2: :)
:D
Hey guys, anyone know who's playing what night or when it would be announced? I just figured that weekend two of this is possible. My family lives in the south, my parents love the eagles, and on that Monday morning I leave the country for awhile. What better way to spend my last weekend than with my parents in Nola seeing our favorite acts.
If Al Green and MMJ are on the same day, I'd seriously consider this. Both are on weekend 2, right?

Well, boo.
The overall lineup is so much better the first weekend, sheesh.

Yeah, I thought so too. I think I'm going to end up just going to Memphis to see them. It's closer and I won't have to take off work to go. Plus, I've got a friend I can stay with so no hotels needed.
ok so it's looking more like i'll be at JF this year  please alert me via all means possible WHEN there's so much as an rumor for a show .. Preservation Hall or not !!!

i'm looking to do both weekends and make that my big vacation of the year (staying in NOLA all 9/10 days). i also wouldn't mind trying to get up to memphis and catching a day at the Beale Fest (seeing MMJ) --a fest i've always wanted to do. (+ seeing the Stax Museum)
Penny, the Stax Museum is worth the trip! I went this past November and loved it.
Penny, you are right in wanting to see the Stax museum. I've been to it about four times and for me, its an awesome monument to the greatest American music form, classic soul and an incredibly emotional experience. There is such a great story and history to the formation and development of this kind of music. Combine a visit to Stax with a challenging and sobering visit to the Civil Rights Museum at the old Lorraine Motel (where most of the Stax musicians used to stay) and you've got quite a vivid portrait of the tangled history of Southern music and culture in the middle of the 20th century. So much music history happened in Memphis (and New Orleans and Nashville), its really amazing to think about it. Go to Civil Rights first, which will probably make you sad and finish off with the celebration of Stax, pure joy through and through. And don't miss the ribs at Cozy Corner BBQ!

thanks Shug and Fully--the only prob i'm gonna find is trying to do that stuff on Beale Fest weekend so it might not be feasible..i made my parents take me Graceland when i was 12 so i have seen some of it but don't remember--def haven't seen either museum you mentioned@!

ha ha...i know..i've done JF before, but never both weekends.
i'm not going to the festival on all the days, either...def gonna pace myself and not get too crazy..hopefully catching a few late night shows and hanging on frenchman st during the week ...
just got confirmation that I have Wednesday through Sunday available. Looks like I'll be heading to NOLA. My dad loves the Eagles and is paying for the hotel room, woooooooo
without having to read all the pages... whats the best hotel situation for price/location. I don't think i need to be right up on the festival if we can save money somewhere else
I like the looks, location and price of the Omni Royal Crescent http://www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/NewOrleansRoyalCrescent.aspx (http://www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/NewOrleansRoyalCrescent.aspx)
Price...well, things can get pretty spendy very quickly. I liked to stay in the bigger hotels on Canal for Jazz Fest primarily for convenience. Easy access to cabs and short walking distances to/thru the Quarter.
There are a few club shows being announced: http://www.boomboomtickets.com/evlis...&events=search (http://www.boomboomtickets.com/evlis...&events=search)

Shug...totally hear you one this! Nothing wrong with not wanting to be jostled by strangers all day. :)
For years, I had a friend who came only for the night time shows during jazz fest. If there was something really special happening on the Fairgrounds, he'd go that day, but otherwise, its was party all night sleep all day. I have another friend who comes every 4 or 5 years, hangs at the hotel pool all day until around 5, then heads to the Fairgrounds...maybe. It's all about doing what you want.
The crowds can be a bit much. I like to travel alone during the day...it makes it easier for me to get where I want to be without having to wait for a group to get food, or look at art, or talk to strangers, etc. All of that is great and I do all of those things myself, just when I have time. Selfish, yes. But, this was my major vacation every year so it was all about me. ;) As you mentioned there are so many other bands to see, it's really easy to get out of the crowds if it's too much. There are 13 stages...if you really want a treat go to the kid's tent. They have good music and it's shaded and mellow. :)
I spend more time now in the Jazz Tent which has chairs and misting fans. When I need to be at one of the outdoor stages, I travel on the (sand) track. Usually, it's a lot less crowded than trying to walk on the main pathways with everyone else.
The big names that play the fest will probably not play any clubs shows. However, all of the New Orleans bands will be around in a variety of combinations and venues. The night time shows are slowly being scheduled/announced now, but that will get into full-swing in the next month or so. My rule of thumb for many of those shows is that if it's sold-out, I can find at least 5 other equally as good or better shows to see. My favorite motto still: "Jazz Fest isn't about what you saw. It's about you had to miss to see what you saw."
For MMJ's prior festival appearance, I stood about halfway back in line with the sound board. There was plenty of room. The front looked crowded, but I think it may have looked worse than it was. This year may be different.
Hope this helps! And, (early) welcome to New Orleans!

i've heard that hotels are released in blocks and that there can be cheaper (good) hotels/rooms out there in the weeks/months to come. if anyone knows what is the best way to stay on top of this / know when to strike on a deal / block of rooms being released, i'd LOVE to hear about it
i still haven't gotten my flight yet. i'm not in love with any of the prices or schedules. i saw an all-time low on some flights though .. $168 roundtrip .. but it's the worst possible times -- arriving in NOLA at 12:13AM and departing at 5:30AM / both with connections. those prices are no longer available but i'm sure they'll pop back up again. i saw them on monday. on one hand it's like YUCK but on the other hand, to save $200+ and arriving to NOLA after midnight ain't no thang b/c it's an all night city. leaving early isn't a bad thing either as one of my roommates is flying out at 6:30AM anyway. and then sometimes i'm of the mind to say screw it and go for the $500 nonstop jetblue flights but i really don't have that kind of cheese to just throw around :P
If you've got the patience to wait it out, there may be some good deals as the event gets closer. In the past I've used Priceline and Hotwire and gotten really good deals ($70/night for a 4*), but recently it seems as if those deals are few and far between.

I will die if it's prince and come close to death if its springsteen. The problem is though, that more big names = more conflict
as soon as i heard the eddie vedder news, i knew a friend we are trying to confirm (and help make the trip more affordable by sharing our room) was a shoe-in to go .. she's the biggest eddie fan i've ever met.
still haven't booked airfare yet and i'm getting frustrated with it ... the cheaper prices (which are still $$$$$ .. today it's like $400) are the worst flight times EVER .. like get in after midnight and depart at 5:30, both with connections. or pay close to $600 for good flight times >:(

prices will go down---it's too early--i'm going to be watching, too...
If you look at daily line ups on your phone you can see who plays what night. Here's my maybe conflicts:
Thursday:
Eddie Vedder
Florence and the Machine
Friday:
Grace Potter
Rodrigo y Gabriella
Saturday:
The Eagles
Herbie Hancock
MMJ
Pres Hall
Levon Helm
Sunday:
Neville Bros
Pres Hall 50th
Sharon Jones
If you all already knew the daily line ups, sorry, I didn't know they had been announced
Nice! Dailies come out officially tomorrow...now I gotta see if the app will work on my (not i) phone. :)
thursday and saturday it is then  the chances of seeing the eagles, mmj, and levon seem remote at best tho
Super excited when I heard it was Eddie.
Now just hoping there is some great late nights in the works.
2nd weekend already booked for me with Grand Marshall passes. Flight/Hotel/Resturants all booked as well.
Only thing left to do is get late night tickets and PARTY!!
Despite my best wishes, Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band have been added..."Springsteen and company will close out the Acura Stage on April 29, the fest's first Sunday."
Love Bruce. Sad it's weekend one. The weekend one line up is all around better

Very true... :) Depending on what else is happening, I'll probably do a drive by. I mean, I am from New Jersey. I should at least be able to say that I've seen the guy. ;)
Yeah, he's worth seeing...about once. ;)

;D He knows I'm just playin'.
i thought we were gonna see the schedule today? I thought schedule meant time slots.
I wish we could make this festival, but as we'll only be returning from Australia a couple of weeks before this looks unlikely. Plus, we probably have to do some home improvements (ugh!).

What you're looking for are the "cubes" ...it will be a little while before they are released. Enjoy the line up conflict free while you can ;)
eddie and MMJ are on separate days. being my two favorite artists of all time, its quite a weight off my shoulders that they're on different days.
Pretty cool article on NoLa.com about Jazzfest/ Springsteen ties, and how the deal got done.

You got it. I thought it was a great read too.
Big Bruce fan here, so not surprised to read about his generosity. He does tons of that, but for the most part it's not something that gets much pub.
I really liked the part about him loving New Orleans, and wanting to be involved.
2nd weekenders - what's everyone looking forward to? I love catching acts at festivals that are new to me...
Hey Eric,
This is my tentative plan of who I'd def like to see:
Thurs:
Eddie Vedder
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
George Porter, Jr.
Glen Hansard (if possible)
Honey Island Swamp band
Friday: I don't think I'll go to the festival this day, probably will do sight seeing..
Saturday:
MMJ (gonna camp at this stage so right now depends on who else's at their stage).
also like to see:
Levon
Steve Earle
PHJB
Sunday:
The Neville Brothers
Sharon Jones (have never seen)
Rebirth Brass Band
Foo Fighters (if possible)
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are awesome. Bring your dancing shoes.
For cheap rooms at Jazz Fest, last year for the 2nd weekend, I booked a cheap hotel a couple of miles outside the Quarters and then about 3 days before I left, I got the Sheraton on Canal St. for $65 for Thur. night on Priceline. Then I booked the Marriott on Canal St. on priceline for $115/nt for Friday and Sat. night. Then on Sat. I got the Chateau LeMoyne in the Quarters for Sun. night for $59. But I'm a pro on bidding on rooms.
This year I used my credit card miles ($100) and got a suite in the Quarters for Thur. nite and since I will have wheels, I've booked the Hilton at the Airport for $59/nt for Friday and Sat. I'm bringing my bike so I'll have lunch (best poboys in the World) each day at Parkway Bakery and Tavern, then leave my car there and pedal 1.5 miles to the fairgrounds. I'll skip the Fest Friday and will be touring NO on my bike most of the day.
Can't wait to see Hansard/Vedder Thru
(Glen Hansard w/ Eddie Vedder "Falling Slowly" PJ20 9/4/11 HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4-4HUS1euA#ws)) MMJ, PHJB, Levon, Steve Earle on Sat. and Sunday will be cool too. Hope I can stumble upon one or two private shows at the clubs too but ya have to get lucky there.

If you've got the patience to wait it out, there may be some good deals as the event gets closer. In the past I've used Priceline and Hotwire and gotten really good deals ($70/night for a 4*), but recently it seems as if those deals are few and far between.
Keep an eye out here: http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html (http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html) (scroll down a bit to see recent winning bids, if any)
Good luck and enjoy the Freak's Ball this weekend...I almost booked a flight home. Saturday is going to be nuts!! I think this is the 3rd or 4th Ball that I've missed...whaaaaaa :'(

I really wish we were going! :( Especially with Bruce now added! :'(
Is there any update on the possibility of a PHJB aftershow like last time?
thanks for the update Nova
any idea what time the gates open every day?
also, where do you get one of those flags that everyone flies? should we try to fly one jacket related?
Gates open every day at 11...first bands are on stage right after generally between 11:10 and 11:15.
Try to buy your tickets before getting to the festival. The ticket lines will be horrendous...same goes for will call.
Those flags are the creations of the owners. Flags are cool, but they require someone to hold it/carry it all day. I've never had one, but I think they used to let you stake them down to the ground but that's not allowed anymore. That said, I think it would be cool to have some sort of flag flying on MMJ day... =)

I won't post all the shows here (will be way too many), but I just got this from another list (which Brooke probably received as well) :) For what it's worth, the prices for these shows are a bit much IMHO...

i'd love to hit the last Anders one ... seeing him in NOLA (non-fest stage) is a must but i'm sure he'll be all over the place that week. we shall see what else comes up :) i saw him last wednesday and ooooh, fun times as always !!!
I saw that Scott just posted that Anders set, along with the Sticky Fingers set...I gota few texts from folks during that show. :)
Anyhoo, here's a Tip's Fess Jazztival Line Up:

Just realized that Instruments A' Comin' isn't on that image. That show is a must for anyone who hasn't been...always a fantastic lineup and the money raised goes to charity to buy band instruments for local kids.
The show is typically the Monday between weekends...if you can stick around, do. Get dinner up the block at Dick and Jenny's or Clancy's (really good local joint...one of the best smoked ducks I 've ever had) and then stroll down to Tip's.
They do the Walk of Fame inductions that night as well as having some local Mardi Gras Indian and local marching bands play outside before the music begins inside.
Fun, fun event...I think it starts around 5:30 or 6 and runs into the wee hours... :)
Booked our flights tonight. Leaving ny on thurs May 3rd and hope to meet up with many of you in NOLA!
i haven't booked my airfare yet and it's driving me crazzzzy. i check every day an embarrassing number of times but i am just not liking what i'm seeing. i'll cave on something soon i hope. the plan is to go down on Wednesday, May 2nd through Monday, May 7th.
i am SO FREAKING EXCITED. jazz fest is just the ultimate good time .. fun town, fabulous food, a festival by day and so many amazing artists in town to play together at night

can't wait, i need a vacation like NOW.
Today is the last day to get your single day tix at the lower price (45$ before fees). Tomorrow they go up to 50$. Total for the 2 day tix I got were 111$ with all the fees. Got 2 day tix for Sat and Sunday. Will probably sit Friday out to sight see and hang out on Frenchman Street!
i've got my single day tix on my fridge already  i got three ... thurs, saturday, & sunday. i too am sitting friday out. is it may yet ?
Any late night shows anyone is attending?
Nothing set in stone yet..one late night that I always do is Vinyl late at the Maple Leaf. It's usually Saturday/Sunday morning second weekend starting around 4-4:30 AM...they serve mimosa's and pancakes at the end.
Anything catch your eye yet? Pretty reliable listings here: http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/ (http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/)

So far the late night show I'm thinking about is Honey Island Swamp Band/Soul Rebels at Tips (on Fri night i think?) ...I want my friend to experience Tipitinas and can't beat HISB/SR---plus it's only 25$ as opposed to other shows...plus Miss Mae's is up the street for 1.50 well drinks (lol)

Aargh...just found out that the late Vinyl show has been switched to first weekend. Loud booing ensued. >:(
That HISB/SR show at Tips should be fun and not super-duper crowded which is a bonus. last year, I all but gave up on seeing HISB b/c the shows were so packed. Tip's should be plenty roomy. Might join y'all there. ;)
No Miss Mae's for me though...LOL... ;D
I will usually have a plan for the 10 pm slot and an idea for the 2 am slot...if there's anything super-late, it usually depends on if I feel like getting home at 9 am.
One suggestion for y'all: Always go out at night with your sunglasses. Don't wear them at night, but sometmes sunrise happens while you're boogieing the night away. There is nothing worse than coming out of club into full sunlight without sunglasses.
You have been warned. ;)
I know it seems there's not a lot of Springsteen fans on this board, but I was wondering if any of the Jazzfest vets were there in 06, and caught Bruce's set?
I've heard from quite a few peeps that weren't fans before, but came away with a new appreciation for his music.
Just curious about your thoughts if you were there, and if this tune live that day was really as intense as I've heard it was.

IMO, if you've seen Bruce live before you are a fan.
If you haven't seen him live but just know some songs, you have NO clue what you are missing.
Kinda like MMJ. If you see them live, you are converted.
I was there that year, Eric, but I opted to see the Meters instead of Bruce. Everyone that I know who went to Bruce was incredibly moved by the entire set.
That was a weird year...and part of me is still sort of happy that I choose the Meters. '06 was the first Fest after Katrina. The neighborhood surrounding the Fairgrounds had been searched (after the flood) on 9/11...Most of the houses that year still had the rescue team markings painted on them...date searched, bodies found, animals found...Blue roofs were everywhere...the Oak trees were still struggling to come back. Every local person that you ran into had a Katrina story to tell...there were a lot of tears that year.
9/11/01 is still really heart-breaking for me as I'm sure that it is for everyone else...especially those from the Northeast...Walking through that neighborhood everyday, seeing 9/11 painted everywhere, and hearing My City of Ruin would have ruined me...but I can imagine that for the residents of and visitors to this city of New Orleans, how incredibly touching and appropriate that moment must have been.
Thanks Nova.
It's amazing to me that MCOR was written about Asbury Park, and the troubles that little city has seen, but this tune fit so well with the tragedies that were 9/11, and Katrina.
I think this years set will be more upbeat, and a celebration of N.O. and their spirit.
excellent heads up on the shades
the only night show i've gotten tix to is Tab Benoit's Swampland Jam >> Anders Osborne with special guests .. 2nd saturday @ Republic. i'm curious to see what riverboat shows will be put together and of course, MMJ LATE NIGHT ?? ?? !!
This seems to be the time the remaining venues around town finalize their late-night schedules during JazzFest. Mahalia Jackson (booked Trombone Shorty + Ozomatli recently), Joy, and PH are still open during the second weekend. With MMJ playing MIM Friday, JF on Saturday, and presumably joining PHJB on the last Sunday, what are everyone's current thoughts about a late-night show that Saturday? FYI - PH announced the 2010 show around the end of March.
Saw Ben Jaffe at the Andrew Bird show on Friday night and inquiring about the late night series at PH during JF was killing me. Just couldn't get the chance to ask him.

I'm not sure if this suggestion will be helpful for you, but if you've been eyeing shows over on jazzfestgrids.com, it might be helpful to start gridding (or otherwise noting) your night time plans.
I don't buy tickets to many shows in advance, but it is helpful to note somewhere what you're ticketed for. From there I usually note which shows I'm really interested and also which shows I would be happy to see. I also note parties and dinner ressies.
There are so many options... :bath:
Is it Jazz Fest yet?!
How are you guys getting to Jazz fest from your hotels?
a friend of mine went last year and he said he cabbed it but i know they can get expensive. Cabs in NOLA are expensive in general, one from the airpot to our hotel cost us 20 buck each before.
i saw a shuttle runs from downtown to the festival through grayline tours but there wasn't a price attached on the website -

cabs, this shuttle, or walk..PM me your phone no if you wanna meet up and share rides!
Cab rides from the airport are charged a flat fee. I think it's $36.
Getting to the Fairgrounds...I'd take a cab with 2-3 other people or take the city bus. The taxi fare is $5 per person. If you ride single, you'll be charged the meter, which can get spendy.
The city bus is $1.25 each way. Check out this link for some really great info on your options: http://jazzfest.swagland.com/transport.html (http://jazzfest.swagland.com/transport.html)
Meant to post this earlier, but if you are not on a tight schedule when you arrive, take the airport shuttle. I think it's may be $20 each way. The only catch is that everyone is dropped off depending on the location of their hotel. Once, my hotel was the last stop and I could swear that I was on the shuttle for a couple of hours.
Oh...very few of the cabbies here have credit card readers, so be prepared to pay with cash.
Last, call United Cabs. They are the most reliable and dependable. Put this number in your cell phones: 504-522-9771....when in doubt, take a cab. Better safe than sorry.

So do you all think people will line up on the rail as early as gates open for Eddie? This is the best shot I have at seeing EV close.
Just got this tweet:
"Jazzfest will release this year's schedule cubeson Tuesday, March 27th!"
So next Tuesday, you'll know who is playing on which stage at which times (please, Jazz Fest schedulers, let me enjoy the full Herbie Hancock set).
Cubes are out...full MMJ and Herbie overlap... >:(
MMJ from 5:25-6:55...probably some lee-way here for an encore or two.
Wow...Springsteen is 4:30 - 7...

Have to say... WORST scheduling I've ever seen. The fact that they all start at the same times is outrageous. There's no room for catching the second half of shows and shit like that. Bizarre. This makes me think I'll never buy tickets to jazz Fest again until schedules come out.

LOL...Sorry e-wind. This is how Jazz Fest rolls.
"Jazz Fest isn't about what you saw. It's about what you had to miss to see what you saw."
The way things look right now (and there will be changes), I'll be missing 70% of the MMJ set unless Herbie Hancock is terrible. ;D
So, don't print your cubes today. Print them before you hop on the plane. There will be some changes, but don't expect them to clear up the conflicts in the 5-7 slot on any day unless someone cancels.
Well I can confirm I'll be seeing EV, MMJ, and PHJB and Friends. I'm glad it ends early every night, cause ive never been to Nola.
:)
You'll see lots more on the Fairgrounds. My first fest I came for one band...but by the end of those 4 days, that one band didn't even matter. I still liked them, but I found so much more.
If you need any recommendations for stuff to do, let me know. Happy to help. I'll be on the Fairgrounds all seven days...and out almost every night.
i can see the frustrating end of it but i know whatever bands i do see, it is gonna be amazeballs and those i don't catch, there's a good chance i can find them playing elsewhere for a late night show
to say i'm stoked would be an understatement. tomorrow kicks off my 5 week countdown until departure :D jazzfest is THE BEST ... live music 24/7 !!
they're right---when i went to Jazz Fest, i came home with my head still boppin (for DAYSSSSS)..it's not so much about what specific bands you see, it's part of the whole experience...it's not like any of the other festivals, trust me...whether you miss a band you wanna see or see someone you weren't expecting to, everyone is there for the music and culture and you're not going to be dissappointed at all. don't try to see too much or move from stage to stage, just enjoy what you're seeing because there's nothing like it--especially the NOLA bands
and as far as the fairgrounds--save some energy for the night time, focus on soaking the music and food up and save your partying till later (except for Nova-who seems to have an unlimited and un-human like ability to party all the time) ;)
and PS--bring a festival HAT!

I agree 200% with everything, except this. ;D
Go from stage to stage...get caught up in a 2nd line parade...and also, just like Penny said, if you are enjoying where you are-enjoy it. If you have the time, wander around and let your ears pick where you will go. See/hear/eat as much as you can!
Ahhh, screw it. It's New Orleans. Do whatcha ya wanna! (and yes, that was a subliminal message to suggest that you see the Rebirth Brass Band!)

Brooke...if you're hanging with the NYC Freaks for the Fest, you're going to have a very good time and our paths will probably cross at some point. We run in the same circle loosely connected Freak circle. :)

well you know more than i do--- :)
however, i left for Pearl Jam a few years ago to see BOH at a smaller stage and never made it back anywhere near the main stage...(that's how i ended up seeing Honey Island Swamp Band --which was a magical accident) people had blockaded --but that could have been PJ thing, not a JF thing..
but Nova's the expert! did i mention BRING A HAT?

i'm counting on it 8) and i'd love to hear the story of how we have so many folks in common (which i LOVE by the way). i'm not sure who all from the freaks are going down for 2nd weekend yet but i am fortunate enough to say i know a whole mess of folks going ... freaks, mmj folks, phish friends from LA, regular friends from CO, and a very old friend that lives in and is from NOLA. i'm expecting very good things
Better Than Ezra before MMJ - just like 2010!

i am going to this @ Republic on 5/3 .. early show (10pm)
Anders Osborne w/ special guests Luther Dickinson & Karl Denson (CD Release Show for "Black Eye Galaxy") + Tab Benoit's Swampland Jam (Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Sansone, Waylon Thibodeaux, and more)i might go see The New Mastersounds later that night for the late show (2am) but other than that, i'm not sure. i'm reallllly wanting to know what Preservation Hall will be doing in the way of night shows for 2nd weekend ;) as well as what Superfly will do for the river boat shows.
3/4 Honey Island Swamp Band/Soul Rebels--Tipitinas
Also might do Brooke's Anders Osborne show if it's not sold out.

If you're attending weekend 1 & a fan of 90's band Morphine, the two original members now have Louisiana-bred musician Jeremy Lyons on lead vocals & bass and plays these days under the moniker Members of Morphine with Jeremy Lyons (or The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band)- they're playing a 2 a.m. show (Friday night/Saturday morning) at d.b.a. on Frenchmen on the 28th. This is going to be so good.

True...I'll probably be at this show. Jeremy Lyons sounds almost exactly like Mark Sandman...it's eerily good.

I wish that I had a great story for you, but the only connection is that I'm from the northeast. Most of my music buddies are New Yorkers (and Freaks)...so that's where we overlap. I'm not sure who's coming when either, but I do enjoy the NYC invasion that happens during jazz fest. :)
I gotta get someone to bring me some bagels!
Preservation Hall Jazz Band would be taking over the coveted responsibility of closing down the Gentilly Stage on the festival's final day. To commemorate the band's yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration, the band will invite a slew of special guests to join them, and Davis named a few including My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Ani Difranco, Bonnie Raitt and several more. Trombone Shorty, Shamarr Allen and very special guest Mayor Landrieu (on tambourine) then joined PHJB for an a.m. version of "Bourbon Street Parade" followed by a few words from the Mayor, Hasting Stewart of Shell and Nancy Marinovic before a couple more songs by Pres Hall, some red beans and rice (courtesy of Zatarain's) and a photo opp (see below) of the festival poster subjects posing in front of this year's official Jazz Fest and Congo Square posters.
firgured that would happen cause on the iphone app it says "PHJB and Friends"
So I bought Chris Robinson Brotherhood tix for Thurs night..
so far it's Thurs-Tipitinas (CRB), Friday Tipitinas (HISB), and Sat hopefully a special show post MMJ show at fairgrounds.
possibility of the New Master Sounds show (2am Friday) but i'm not sure i can handle that.
and that's all she wrote! can't wait.
This is what I got
Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Thurs
Maybe Honey Island on Friday, but I'm really holding out for ANY show inside the actual Pres Hall, as I really would like to see it. I'm not going to the Fest Friday so I'll definitely be doing a show or two Friday night. I was looking at the new master sounds too, but I'm not sure I'll be staying up Til 4 AM every night. I'm a baby compared to most of my friends and Caroline is a baby compared to most 21 year olds.

Truth be told, before I moved here, I would spend at least two months getting into physical shape for Jazz Fest. Sad, but true. I'd hit the treadmill daily, go to the gym at least 3 days a week, and do yoga. I'd even try to go out to hear music a little more often just to get my body prepared for 13 days in New Orleans. We called it Jazz Fest Training. ;)
The Fairgrounds can be grueling...especially if you're on the move all day. Lots of walking, standing, and dancing in the hot Louisiana sun and humidity. I only drink water, the herbal teas, and the lemonades on the Fairgrounds. I may have a beer here or there, but pretty much the day time is all about staying hydrated so that I can make it out to the night/late night/early morning shows.
i think ill be at that HISB show cause i just looked up the Soul Rebels and they are SICK.
since people around here say jacketeers should be the Cosmic Soul Rebels, maybe there should be a Cosmic Soul Rebel tour where the Soul Rebels open up for MMJ and then play horn section for em, and then they cover Sweet Dreams are Made of These together

Yup. Grabbed 2 tix this morning...floor. I'm gonna regret that, I'm sure (floors instead of seats, I mean).
Brooke (and all), no riverboat shows this year :(
And holy crap, I accidentally discovered the Jeremy Lyons/Morphine thing just yesterday. I will definitely plan on dba for that show!
I grabbed some as well, it's a small theater... I think it'll be cool with or without MMJ as guests
I opted not to get tix for this. Not sure I wanted to spend another 50$---If there are tix left last min, I might change my mind. (also holding hope out for yet another, secret, more intimate show --but highly doubt it).
I think it will be awesome, though.
I too am passing on the Joy Theater gig. I've seen JJ play with PHJB a bunch and went to the 50th anniversary Carnegie Hall Show. I think the Gentilly Stage performance (http://www.nola.com/nolavie/index.ssf/2012/03/jazz_fest_cubes_unveiled.html) closing out the end of Jazzfest will be enough for me. Still holding on to my Anders @ Republic plans .. for now.
also, boo for no river boat shows. what the hell ?!! actually i'm often apt to skip those unless it's someone i loooove b/c being trapped on a boat for several hours w/o an option to leave makes me feel cagey ;D oh well.
anybody still looking for tickets?? I'm bailing and doing beale street instead due to a variety of reasons. I have two 2nd weekend any day tickets.

Eddie Vedder has cancelled: :'(
Eddie Vedder cancels New Orleans Jazz Fest show due to injury
Published: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 3:49 PM Updated: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 4:16 PM
By Keith Spera, The Times-Picayune
Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder has canceled his scheduled appearance at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz Fest. He has postponed the rest of his 15-city ukulele tour to the fall, in order to recover from temporary nerve damage in his right arm that resulted from a back injury sustained earlier this year.
In a post on Pearl Jam's web site, manager Kelly Curtis said, "After having worked aggressively with doctors and physical therapists for the last eight weeks to repair the damage, the intensity of the injury and time needed to heal has made it impossible to play the shows as scheduled. There was hope up until the last minute that the treatments would be successful.
"Sincerest apologies go out to those who have made plans and bought tickets. Eddie is frustrated beyond measure, but remains positive that come this summer all will be back in good form."
Vedder was slated to headline the Acura Stage at the Fair Grounds on Thursday, May 3. The festival has not yet announced how the slot will be filled.
Vedder is the second major festival act to pull out for health reasons. John Mayer's recurring throat ailment forced him to cancel his entire tour. R&B singer Jill Scott backed out of Jazz Fest in order to accept a role in a remake of "Steel Magnolias." She was replaced by Cee Lo Green.
All postponed Vedder dates, except for Jazz Fest, will be rescheduled for November and December 2012; tickets will be honored for rescheduled dates. Refunds will be available upon request through the point-of-purchase. Fan Club members with Ten Club pre-sale ticket will receive an email regarding proper refund procedures today, Thursday April 5th.
i saw that today. vedder playing closed the deal on a friend of mine coming to JF and with this news, she's kind'a crushed.

Might be bailing to go to Beale Street now. This was kind of my motivation to spend the money. Dammmmiitt

are we there yet?
Almost! I can see the top of (what I think is) the Gospel Tent structure from my living room window today! The count down is on...after next weekends French Quarter Festival, that is =)
I'm starting to get excited!
JP--i think you got rid of yours-but if anyone has extra fest tix for weekend 2, let me know! (for a friend, i've got my Sat and Sun tix)
After Jazzfest 2010 and Voodoo 2010 in New Orleans, my wife and I decided to skip Jazzfest this year and make Forecastle happen instead (we have never been to Louisville), so no tickets here. Y'all have an awesome time and eat some Crawfish Bread for me! I hope you get DANCEFLOORS and/or HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS with PHJB!
Not sure who will be here Tuesday between, but this show at the Blue Nile Upstairs looks too cool to pass up:
A Night of Improvised Round Robin Duets
Helen Gillet
Mike Dillon
Aurora Neeland
James Singleton
Simon Lott
Justin Peake
Jeff Albert
Mark Southerland
Also, Penny...let me know if you want me to pick up one more ticket for you. I'm going to run to the box office this week to pick up my outta towner's tix.
So, based on past events, does anyone know if Eddie Vedder or John Mayer will be replaced?
Hello, long-time lurker, first-time poster and huge MMJ fan here.
I live in New Orleans and am hearing all kinds of rumors who they're lining up to fill in for Eddie Vedder's vacated spot. Some great, some not so great. But, supposedly, there will be somebody. Not sure about Mayer, tho. Also, here's the schedule for Preservation Hall's "Midnight Preserves". http://www.nola.com/jazzfest/index.ssf/2012/04/preservation_hall_announces_mi_1.html (http://www.nola.com/jazzfest/index.ssf/2012/04/preservation_hall_announces_mi_1.html)

So, based on past events, does anyone know if Eddie Vedder or John Mayer will be replaced?
Still waiting on the Vedder replacement. It's a shame that he cancelled so late. In the recent past, last minute cancellations have been filled by Earth,Wind, and Fire. Now, I love EWF, but I would prefer to not have them fill-in again.
Mayer and Jill Scott were replaced already...I think Cee Lo Green is filling Jill Scott's place and Bruce Springsteen is getting a marathon set replacing Mayer's slot, I think.
Yeah I'd perfer it not be EW&F, but my dad would be STOKED! (ha) I'm hoping for something (ANYTHING) that is appealing enough to attend Thursday. Right now I'm thinking about discovering NOLA on Thurs and Fri and Jazzfestin' on Sat and Sun. I've never been to NOLA so i think i'll be having a blast all 4 days no matter what I decide to do.
Do you all think it will be possible for me to sell my Thursday or Friday tickets outside for a lesser price? I was thinking of just selling them for 1/2 off if possible just to unload them quickly and get on with my day.
Okay going to kill myself now
I take it you've just seen this tweet:
Jimmy Buffett, Acoustic - with Mac McAnally has just been added to #JazzFest2012 on Thursday, May 3 and will be closing the Acura Stage.
...and the Parrot-heads rejoice...
I feel like the tweet said "hey eric, fuck off"
LOL...My first thought was to wonder why they would want to ruin my favorite day on the Fairgrounds. Have I not been a good Jazz Fest patron?
Ah well, I will still be on the Fairgrounds that day. Will be able to see Esperanza Spalding's full set or I can split that time with Astral Project. And the Iguanas are friends, so I'll probably pop over there for a bit, too. My only real regret is that this market won't get Eddie Vedder again...
This (snipped from the OZone newsletter today):
:)
I always tell the novices to pace themselves for Mardi Gras so they can last till Tuesday. But it's just the opposite with Jazz Fest. The best advice I can give you is to start cutting down on sleep around January say an hour every two weeks - so that by the time you hit April 26th, you don't need any sleep at all. It's the Crescent City version of boot camp, just as second-lining and dancing at the drop of a high hat cymbal beat is how we maintain ourselves aerobically.
Just one example of what I'm talking about:
Of course you'll want to do the whole first weekend of Jazz Fest at the Fair Grounds, along with every great night concert from a slew of venues across the city. But then, that's when we separate the die-hards from the amateurs.
Racing right from the Fair Grounds as it closes Sunday night at 7 pm, you'll just have time to join Jon Cleary at 8 pm followed by Papa Grows Funk with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux at 11 pm and capped off with a set by Lightnin' Malcolm at 3 am all at the smoke-free and sound-level friendly d.b.a club, at 618 Frenchman Street.
As you head into the glorious sunrise you'll probably want to grab some café au lait and beignets at Café du Monde on your way over to Armstrong Park where the Monk Institute will be presenting a spectacular one-hour program in honor of International Jazz Day. Right from Congo Square you'll hear among others, Luther Gray and ten drummers, Ellis Marsalis, Dr. Michael White, Bill Summers, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Roland Guerin, Dianne Reeves and Herbie Hancock. Oh, yeah--show starts at 7 am Monday morning. (WWOZ will be broadcasting this one live if you can't make it.)
After that, it's time for a power nap, then on to the Louisiana Music Factory, 210 Decatur Street for in-store performances of Meschiya Lake and Tom McDermott, Mia Borders, Trombone Shorty, Shamarr Allen and more. Starts at noon, ends at 7 pm.
Then, across the street, hop on over to the House of Blues and take in WWOZ's 24th annual Piano Night ivory fest featuring a host of famous piano players simultaneously performing from three stages till two in the morning. (WWOZ will be broadcasting this one live, as well.)
Probably time for another power nap, 'cause on Wednesday, there's ten hours of non-stop music at ChazFest before hitting the second weekeend at the Fair Grounds Thursday through Sunday! Party till you drop.
Yours in fog horns and lightning storms,
David Freedman
General Manager
Is it Jazz Fest yet?! :D
I have had two sailors who are also painters/contractors at my house all week. We've been discussing music and yesterday I casually remarked that I hoped neither of them are Buffett fans. They laughed and gave an emphatic "NO!"
Not an hour later, the announcement from Jazz Fest. I swear, I jinxed the Fairgrounds!
I think the only aftershows I'm down for are 4/28 dba (Jeremy Lyons w/ members of Morphine), the 5/5 show at the Joy and possibly Soul Rebels (Pennylane, do you still have an extra for me)?
NoVA, have you picked up tix yet? I need one for first Sunday if you haven't. If you have or it's too far out of the way, that's okay. But if not and you can swing it, I'd really appreciate it!

No problem...planning to go next week. Will happily grab a ticket for you!
Wow, this is quite the year for cancellations. Levon Helms (get well soon!) has cancelled a bunch of dates, including his Jazz Fest slot which was opposite MMJ.
He's been replaced with the Warren Haynes Band. I last got to see this band at High Sierra last year and they put on one of my favorite sets of that weekend. Super-tight...unfortunately, this makes that time slot even tougher.
WHB and Herbie Hancock and MMJ...still holding out hope for a Warren night time show...all but given up on an MMJ night time show.
And another...Bunny Wailer has been replaced with Ziggy Marley.
I was mad I had to miss Levon, but this is even worse!
oh my goodness i'd be all about a late warren show. we always joke that he's the slut of jam bands (he guests and plays with evvvvvvveryone, yeah he gets around) and while i always liked him enough .. it wasn't until this past mtn. jam with the new band that i was like totally on board. penny and i were heading back to the condo for the night but WHB was playing and i'm like let's check this out for a minute. i ended up staying the entire time 8)
sad news about levon. i've heard some not good things and i know he could certainly use some love and prayers sent his way.
Warren Haynes is incredible--always fun to watch--no matter who he plays with!
From PHJB site:
Just announced! The first round of guest artists that will be joining The Preservation Hall Jazz Band for the Crescent City Revue on May 5th at the newly renovated Joy Theater. Guests confirmed so far - Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Stanton Moore, Leo Nocentelli, Ivan Neville, Benny Jones & Uncle Lionel (of Treme Brass Band), Fleur De Tease, Pedrito Martinez, Ernie Vincent, David Torkanowsky, and Little Freddie King! Opening up the festivities that night will be the one and only New Orleans Bingo! Show. More guest artists will be announced soon so stay tuned!
i guess it doesn't belong here but why not ... on levon's site
Dear Friends,
Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.
Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage...
We appreciate all the love and support and concern.
From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy
RIP Levon.... :'(
I'm not sure who wiull do a tribute, but I can't help but think that the Warren Haynes set will include some sort of tribute, as well as Mavis Staples in the Gospel Tent (that's likely to be a tearful beautiful set), and Terrence Simien who does one of my favorite covers of The Night They Drove 'ol Dixie down...
He won't be with us physically....but you'll hear him all over the Fairgrounds.
JJ does a lovely "It Makes No Difference" .. I'd love to hear that on the fest grounds.
Levon will be greatly missed. The man had so much spirit and whenever he sat at his kit, he'd have the biggest & most genuine grin imaginable. May the four winds blow you safely home
So, my friend Coach wrote up this bit of advice for a friend of a friend who is making her first trip the Fest this year. Offbeat (local magazine which you should pick up as soon as you can when you get here--Jazz Fest Bible edition) picked it up and ran it today:
http://www.offbeat.com/2012/04/20/jazz-fest-first-timers-take-note/ (http://www.offbeat.com/2012/04/20/jazz-fest-first-timers-take-note/)
Here are my band suggestions. Try to see them at night time as well as during daytime. Or mix and match it up. Or do whatever the hell you want to do. There's so much going on that planning (at least for me) borders on ludicrous and lots of people will end up getting pissed off that you're not "on plan."
Rebirth – MUST see, indoors/outdoors, early/late. They're the epitome of a great NOLA brass band.
Trombone Shorty – MUST see, he's the most "on-friggin' fire" guy going. He'll have an amazing, eclectic assortment of stars with him.
Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys – MUST see for authentic rockin' zydeco, another legend Rosie is.
The Stooges Brass Band, the Soul Rebels, TBC Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band, the Dirty Dozen, etc. – All have their own charm and infectious enthusiasm. Always fun.
Anders Osborne, Big Sam's Funky Nation, John Mooney all blow doors off.
Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias – They always play on Sunday at "Coach's Spot," Heritage Stage, for those of you who don't know or haven't seen me there in the past 17 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- At the Fest, make an effort to check out all stages, even if for just a song or two. Hidden gems abound. Also, the grandstand has air-conditioning, long lines at much cleaner restrooms (for those that give a sh*t) than steaming hot, feces-laden port-o-potties (nice visual, eh?). I like the respite of AC personally, but only briefly.
- If you want to see a headliner, plan ahead. Find a spot in front of one of the two big stages right after the previous bands set ends. Fest is very good at keeping the bands on track timewise. Otherwise, NOLA has two times: It's either getting darker or it's getting lighter. Bring your shades when you go out at night!!!!
NO BEADS – BEAD SEASON ENDED ON ASH WEDNESDAY.
Clubs:
The best shows start after 2:00 am, hands down. Sleep when you get home!!!!!
Maple Leaf is a favorite, as is Tipitina's (always a clusterf**k at Fest though) and Rock-n-Bowl (I think you all will really like this place, just a hunch). Gotta get a Bloody Mary at Igor's with two caveats; 1) the sun must be coming up and 2) you have not slept. Talk about a freakshow!!!!!!
your enthusiasm and excitement bleeds off of my computer screen. LOVES IT

seriously Penny, how do you hold down a job? ;D ;D
OK, last post from me (probably):
First, safe and happy travels to all those who will be coming down over the next 2 weeks!
If you're staying in a hotel, they'll probably have Offbeat magazine for you (it's free and available all over the city). Also, pick up a Gambit. Read the Counts Picks. I don't know these folks, but they never fail to point me in the direction of something new and good. Offbeat has all of the club gigs (as of when they went to print) and will also showcase some of the talent that you may not have ever heard of...
The Louisiana Music Factory (in the French Quarter) is a pretty good record shop here and the have free in-store performances just about every day. Euclid Records is a little further away in the Marigny, but is also a pretty good record shop..Bonus if you go to Euclid, you can eat at Elizabeth's...get the praline bacon--thank me later. ;)
Don't forget your sunscreen! :) And, your sun hat as Ms. Penny has already mentioned. Don't mention the word ra*n, but be prepared for it. A ziploc baggie for your electronics is a good idea. If we do get ra*n, there will be mud. The mud will eat your flip-flops.
Please, if you haven't already, put the United cab phone number (504-522-9771 or 504-524-9606) into your phones...please stay aware of your surroundings particularly after dark. When in doubt, take a cab.
If I can help with anything, give me a shout via email vachelle at yahoo dot com and if you see me, please say hello. :)
Last, welcome to New Orleans and Happy Jazz Fest!! :D

They're going to have to broadcast the MMJ set, right?? You don't put them in your promo video and then not show them (I hope!!!)

For those of us unluckies, wwoz is streaming tunes live from the fest (i think from the blues tent right now?), and the sound is pristine. Check it out (box to click says Listen Now in upper left corner of homepage).
