Title: Jim's autograph
Post by: mmj37 on Dec 04, 2006, 04:25 PM
Does anyone know why Jim signs a "#37" with his signature whenever he autographs something?

Post by: sweatboard on Dec 04, 2006, 04:56 PM
I think he mentioned that it's just his number.  Jim James #37

I asked Jim about that. He had the funniest grin, and twinkle in his eye - it means something, I doubt it's just a random number yanked from the sky.

Yeah, he wouldn't tell me... lol

I have an autograph from Jim and it's a #34, not 37.    He also signed my name with a "4" as in "For ______", which I thought was fun.

I have no clue what it means either.  I do know that I have a number that "follows" me.  Some people just have numbers.

I think maybe your 7 looks like a 4  because he does sign 37...

hmm...well even before I obtained my autograph I remember reading other people say it was a #34.

I think he was 34 before the off season trade, someone already had 34 so he had to take 37.

It definately looks like a four but it could be a seven with a loopy top.  It would be awfully exagerated but very possible. I'm just sayin'

When they aren't on tour Jim does autograph sessions at Ramada Inn's around the country.  You have to wait in line for like an hour and he won't personalize anything but it's still worth it.

Yeah, I had to sign this form promising to give him my firstborn as his personal slave, and I had to give him two cases of apple butter, a pair of Puny Devil knee-high socks, the door handle to a '84 Plymouth Duster, a lock of Stockard Channing's hair, and five Toblerones.

And seven bucks. Upfront.

But then again, that was during his Motel 8 autograph tour. I hear it's a sweeter deal at the Ramada. ;)

my bad--I misremembered.  My extra Buddy System poster that all the guys signed for me in their dressing room after the Pearl St (Northampron MA) show has 34 on it--don't know why I thought it was a seven.  Anyway he has definitely stated in the past that it was a number that was "given" to him--nothing more explicit than that .  Sorry everyone its a 4 not a 7

if not, he certainly is, and if you wait around the back exit of the venue long enough, they're bound to escape at some point and all of the guys are more than happy to sign whatever and high five you and whatnot.

Jim seems fun and quirky enough to do a motel autograph tour.  That would be hilarious if he really did that...or maybe grocery store grand openings.  I once met zach from saved by the bell at a k-mart opening...oh, treasures of a lifetime.  ;)

I didn't want to start a new thread, but thought I'd share a find from two nights ago.  I was doing my nightly eBay search for Omnichords and MMJ stuff, bought my fifth Omnichord!, then stumbled upon a poster from Austin '08 for $40, with proceeds benefiting cancer patients in Austin.  Sounds like they signed this for charity.  Its my third item with all five signatures (the others- a two-sided Evil Urges promo poster and a signed Okonokos CD- are also pictured below).

eBay has had a Z poster with YY's autograph up for $50 for months.  Don't know if it ever sold.  He also signed a ton of guitars, which I think is a bit sleazy, that go for $150-$400 on eBay.

It does seem like Jim (and to a lesser degree, the rest of the band) have signed a lot of stuff (guitar pic guards, photos, CDs, etc.) that seem only designed to make someone else money.  Likely, they're getting paid to do it, too.  I suppose its a form of advertising and it promotes their own work, for the most part.

I would take some posts with a grain of salt here, however.  ;)

And I will be quite excited if we ever see ANYTHING new on the yimyames.com site.

That's the only time i've seen it look that much like a 4, might be a fake. There's no doubt that in my roll call certificate and most Jim James' autographs that it is a 7. Sometimes he swoops the top line of the 7 with a curve and makes it kinda look like a 4. We need a handwriting expert here.  ;)

The number is the number of guitars he has.  The older signatures are going to say 34.  He now has 37 hence signatures haves 37.  I have one that has 34 on it from a detroit show a couple years back.  My buddy got a signature at the columbus show that says 37.

i'm sorry but thats just not true.

I think i got that rumor off those forum awhile back.

i wasn't trying to be snarky, but like its been said several times in this thread, take what some people say here with a grain of salt. its hard to see sarcasm through the computer

Yeah now that I think of it, it does sound stupid.  I doubt he has anything close to that number of guitars.  On a related side note, I haven't seen him play the strat recently.
