When I heard the rumor I decided to not go to All Good or LouFest. Red rocks is well worth it, especially of all the details are true. I will never miss a MMJ red rocks show as long as I can help it.

JFW pt 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After some quick number crunching... if I can go from now until mid-July without eating I can afford to fly to CO and catch this. So we'll see.

...jimsflyingv   there is a belief that mmj's tweet "what color is your favorite rock" might refer to the band hopefully playing at Red Rocks in Colorado.... (JFW~ jacket fest west)

This is the rumor/news I've been waiting months for!  If true, it means I'll be hitting Red Rocks twice this year, once for two nights of Wilco and again for MMJ.  How cool would that be?

maybe others have answered this, but to be clear- Red Rocks is an outdoor concert venue in Colorado, famous place, great musical history, fantastic natural setting....

Nice.  I love the speculation/anticipation, but it makes me check the web and the Forum too often.  Could be a summer tour brewing???.......

..........I hope I'm not reporting anything out of line or bogus, but Songkick (which is not 100% reliable) has MMJ at the Mann in Philly August 17.

I have a friend who works for AEG in Denver and he posted about five new Red Rocks shows on fb yesterday.  I think it will be VERY soon...today would be my guess.  I am really antsy to see what else gets announced.  Would love to do Red Rocks but don't know if it's in the cards for me.  I could really use a multiple night SF run!!!

PLEASE don't read too much into this, but a well-known promoter in the area tweeted about bringing a horse to Colorado. I want this so badly to mean Neil and Crazy Horse, but I'm trying to tell my imagination to shut up.

Anyway, where do you guys usually stay at these RR shows? Close to the place, or do you just grab a cab from Denver, or another close area?

Jack White is coming August 4th. We also have two nights of Wilco in June. Gonna be the best summer concert series at Red Rocks in a long time.

I went to the Band of Horses site, looking for clues.  A photo on their "Tour Blog" link looked familiar, so I enlarged it.  See a lot of familiar faces, and an over-the-top BoH fan we all remember well.

I went to boulder and one of my fave red rocks memories is neil and crazy horse in the pouring rain!  Grateful dead not too shabby, either!  ;)

That said, nothing would make me happier than mmj/boh at red rocks.  I think I would need to plan a mommy getaway weekend.  Crossing fingers it all works out.

Agreed.  BOH is a terrific band and can certainly be a headliner.
But NOT when they are playing with MMJ.

I think they all seemed to get along well when BOH opened for MMJ at MSG.
If BOH is with MMJ, they are the opening act.

whether they're commercially as big or as popular won't make too big of a difference when planning this tour (i would think). can you see MMJ coming out and playing their set balls to the wall and ending on OBH---then BOH comes out playing Detlef Schrempf? two types of music and one OBVIOUSLY goes first...

MMJ JUST DOESN'T PLAY FIRST...that's like trying to brush your teeth with your opposite hand..(or for all you dudes, doing something else from what i've heard...didn't want to get too graphic)  ;)

I thought switch-hitting was something else. Also, Band of Horses is a good band, but they are not playing after MMJ. That said - if it is possible for me to be there, I will be there. If Neil Young and Crazyhorse were there I would fake an illness at work to be there. Otherwise, it had better be on the weekend.

Personally I'm hoping for something later. I'll take anything, but I'd rather not have to take off more time from work in the 3 week span from Forecastle, All Good, and my family vacation. Also, ive heard that they are touring in August/Sept. if that's true it seems like they'll start east and move west based on the Phili date.

I hope I don't have to tell my mom I won't be able to make it to family vacation, but I'll be at red rocks either way.

i think we all got GA and then were the first people in; once we were in, they wrist banded the first few rows so we could roam around and not have to worry (they were very strict about who they let back into those first few rows.) thanks to crazylove having a yellow rain jacket and pretending to be security and soulshine's gimp going on, we had mastered the entrance/security issues.

i don't know if Band of Horses are doing the whole run or not, but they are playing the show here in the Twin Cities area. as for "co-headlining", i've heard 75+ minute set for BoH, regular for MMJ, whatever you want to call that. i would still say BoH are opening, but with a longer set than most openers get (and rightfully so).

as for being announced on the 30th, that's only for the show here due to the public onsale of a major outdoor festival starting on the 28th. they could announce the other dates before/after that.

In 2006 Pearl Jam was "co-headliner" with Tom Petty for a few shows, as part of Petty's 30th anniversary tour.  PJ opened and played 75 minutes, while Petty played 2 hours. PJ fans were not happy with that, but it helped sell out Pepsi Center for two nights.

I don't think MMJ sold out last year, or it did on the last day. So calling BOH a "co-headliner" would help sales. It lets BOH fans know they re getting more than the typical 45 minute opening slot.

OTOH I recall two nights at Red Rocks when the co-headliners were the Allman Bros and String Cheese Incident. They took turns opening for each other.  Those were epic shows going 4-5 hours combined.

Christine made a solid point that I think the members of BOH would even agree with. Who wants to see then insane entity that is a Jacket show ending with one big holiday and then watch BoH. I like BOH, but no one wants to have to go on after jacket. It'd be like going on in the talent show after Susan Boyle or something.

Also, jacket has been around for 13 or so years building a extremely loyal following based on their epic live show. BOH has been around for half the time and built their success on a few singles. I don't think anyone can argue that BOH has the drawing power of jacket, no matter how many Facebook likes or airtime they get. About 18 months ago BOH played the brown theater in louisville (tiny venue) and a month later MMJ damn near sold out the Yum Center  i know hometown advantage, but  still that says something. And I don't think jacket would do a multi night run at an epic venue and not play last.

Of course, I could be eating all these words in a few weeks. We'll see.

One more thing- Phish is playing Dick's Sporting Goods Park near Denver over Labor Day weekend, so they might want to stay away from those dates.

Charles

You're so right.  8/3-4 makes sense, esp with east coast dates 2 wks later.  Makes me hopeful for end July CA dates then they swing east.

We'll see.

oh i don't think ANYONE was saying that BoH would ever play after MMJ, simply that they'd get a longer/nearly headlining length set for them :). but yes, to clarify, MMJ will def play last at the shows with BoH (not even sure the entire run is with them or not yet actually).

no question that live show wise, MMJ still outdraw BoH probably 2:1, maybe even 3:1 in many markets.

that said, i do think if it's known ahead of ticket onsales, that if Band of Horses are getting 60-75+ minutes, that would entice a lot more BoH fans who might not be the biggest MMJ fans from paying the $35-50+.

that is definitely true. I was really impressed with BoH at MSG in december, but not impressed with them at all a year earlier at a headlining show. That said, if BoH did for some insane reason play last, I would consider going to another run of shows like mann>marriweather>NYC or something.

obviously, were all gigantic mmj freaks around here, so i'm trying to say anything to convince myself everything will go the way we want. i realize thats selfish.

i've seen BoH a bunch over the years, and sadly they used to be very hit or miss with the various lineup changes, etc. The original lineup with Mat Brooke was certainly my favorite, but saw just an AWFUl show @ First Avenue in 2007 or so? Ben just complained about the monitors the entire show and it ruined the entire vibe. thankfully their show a week or two later at the Fillmore in SF was fantastic.

by all accounts the new (and fairly stable) live lineup has lead to a lot more consistent shows the last few years (i've not seen them since Lolla in 2009) with Pearl Jam, MMJ, etc.

well i think the term co-headlining implies they'd be switching the order back and forth and playing for the same amount of time...which won't and shouldn't be happening..not sure which venues where BOH would get 75 minutes..logistically probably isn't possible at a lot of the venues...maybe Red Rocks and some others..

Pete was a huge Hendrix fan. He and Clapton were blown away watching him in in England. AFAIK, the dispute was over Hendrix burning and smashing his guitar at the end of his performance (which he did at Monterrey). The equipment smashing was pretty standard for The Who in 1967 and Pete felt it would make them look like they were copying Jimi. Both bands were new to the west coast. Pete is never consistent with his stories, so I am looking forward to the latest version of this incident in his new Bio in October.

No one ever wanted to follow The Who.

not always tho... i've seen plenty of co-headlining tours (such as the Petty/PJ one above) where while it's billed as a co-headlining slot, the obviously larger band still always played last, they just both got as much time as they normally would.

and honestly... while MMJ are known for 2+ hours, BoH rarely hit 90-100 minutes in my experience (that could have changed the last tour), so 60-75 min for them isn't far off. i'd just be bummed to have them only get 45 minutes, as they're a pretty established band and one whom I love at least 75 min worth of their material (likely a bit more).

1.  I can't think of any scenario in which Band of Horses would go after My Morning Jacket.  It's a silly thing to worry about, really.  There's just no chance.  But given a longer set?  That makes sense.

2.  Solace, are you saying that there will be a Jacket show in Minneapolis?  I may have missed it but can you say when?  And if so is this separate from the festival?

3.  What a glorious, glorious summer for music.

4.  There was talk earlier in the thread about Austin City Limits.  Is it pretty much a forgone conclusion that they'll be there?

MMJ was one of the headliners at Austin City Limits last year.  I don't think they ever repeat headliners two years in a row, so I think it is a foregone conclusion that MMJ would not be there this year.

Last year, what kinda seats did Roll Call get? Were they assigned, or was it first 20 rows GA kinda thing?

i think we all got GA and then were the first people in; once we were in, they wrist banded the first few rows so we could roam around and not have to worry (they were very strict about who they let back into those first few rows.) thanks to crazylove having a yellow rain jacket and pretending to be security and soulshine's gimp going on, we had mastered the entrance/security issues.

I've still got the boot.

Just a tip from a fellow Canadian, when flying to the States, there are some serious benefits to driving across the border first and flying from an American airport.

I'm considering driving to Detroit and flying to Denver from there. Less than $400 per person. Of course, Ottawa to Detroit is quite a drive. But something to think about!

When we went to Louisville in 2010, we drove to Syracuse and flew out of there.  We'll likely have to do that again if we want to make it to Red Rocks.  I quickly did another search, and the price was less than $400 US per person.  So, there's our solution.  Plus, then we'll get to stop at Dinosaur BBQ.  Yum!

Herm- assuming that its all GA like Red Rocks usually is, I dont think it'll sell out right away.

id offer to get a spare ticket in case, but if it is multiple nights, i dont think my shitty restaurant job for 15 hours a week can support 300$ of tickets at once. ( I gotta buy 2 already cause my lady)

But wasn't is just the first 24 rows that were like regular "pit" style ga.  I seem to remember there being a definite distinction on whether you had ga in the first 24 or 26 rows than further back.....

You get 50,000 points for flights by opening a card. There's a $69 yearly card fee, but I'm going to cut mine up right after I use it for the first time. I don't mind paying $69 for that many points. If you will pm me your email address, I'll forward you the email they send me every week about signing up. You also need to enroll in their membership program.

Am I the only one who hopes they get rid of that ugly green eyeball in addition to changing the setlists up? This will be a great weekend trip. It looks like we are going to be spending a good portion of the summer together, eh? Particularly those of us who are also going to NFF.

Hey, the Circuital T-shirt is awesome.  How could you not like a shirt that glows in the dark (sort of)?

I did not buy that ugly tshirt. However, apparently I wear the adorable Reno rollcall tshirt so often on Fridays that my students want to know what happened to it if I don't have it on. :embarassed: I'm such an mmj dork.

I was just looking at pricing for flights from Nashville to Denver...very affordable. With the Southwest credit card points, this is looking very do-able. Now to see when the date will actually be. Come on, Monday!

can you all tell me again about this South West CC deal?

Herm- assuming that its all GA like Red Rocks usually is, I dont think it'll sell out right away.

I think the shirt is great.  My wife thinks it's creepy.  To each their own.  If we go to Red Rocks, I'll wear the shirt just for you.  At the very least, I'll see you at Newport.

What is the basis for thinking August 3 and 4? Because it's the only weekend left on Red Rocks calendarand all you travelers are wishfully hoping for the weekend?

You won't see me at Newport, so I'd better bring some sunglasses to protect me from the evil eye in Colorado. I haven't told my husband that I'm going yet, but if he gets to come too for free, it should be fine.

Basically. I'm hoping for something later. If it goes down the week days after 3/4 I will be an unhappy boy. Any date other than 5th-10th is cool with me

I forget who said it but they seemed pretty sure about the dates.  And it would be a repeat of the same weekend as last year, and these things sometimes have a way of becoming habit over the years.  For example, 7/4 has become the Blues Traveler date at Red Rocks....probably has been for the past 12 or so years.  So the first weekend in Aug might be becoming the MMJ standard.  Although the 2008 show was on a different day in Aug (my b-day, 8/21) but we're not going to talk about that right now...

And there are no other weekends on the calendar at Red Rocks that would work, and they would not put these shows up against Phish.  No way, no how.   A lot of people who would otherwise come to the MMJ shows will be at Phish.  Not gonna happen.  Labor Day is out, methinks.

Then I hope even MORE that they're up against Phish that weekend. Less Phan's for us to fight for the rail! ;)

Kids with blond dreads and the scent of Patchouli can really ruin an otherwise perfectly good evening.

Oh, I understand that logic completely!!  I can't stand the wook factor, either!  But from a promoter's point of view, I can't see how they would put MMJ up against one of the biggest draws anywhere, and especially in Colorado.  I don't see it happening.
