Steam Engine, Old Sept Blues, Dondante, Lay Low =

Sickest Dondante ever!
It was pretty badass. Short encore bummed me out - as did the inclusion of Shabazz Palaces in it.
Damned noise curfew.
Steam Engine, Old Sept. Blues and Dondante all in a row was sweet.
It also was nice to see my first full-length Run Thru since the last time they played the Greek!
Soundcheck: I'm Amazed, Victory Dance
Soundcheck party: Butch Cassidy, Just One Thing, Evelyn Is Not Real
pretty good show.
i think my expectations were high given the band's history of bay area shows as well as it being the tour closer. they probably blew their wad with 3 nights in LA.
my highlights included steam engine, lay low, master plan and run thru.
well spontaneous curation was obviously put on hold for last night.
From the old new forum's spontaneous curation submission thread, to the tweets that I saw, pretty much nothing was chosen. I understand that Remnants and Come Closer were probably not going to happen, but By My Car or The Bear (in Berkeley?!) or O is the One is not asking too much. And the damn show ended at 10:55! Plenty of time to squeeze By My Car into the beginning of the encore.
And I'm officially not a fan of the Greek. If you are not really tall, choices are to be at the front where the stage is really high, or on the sides near the stage and have people walking back and forth the whole show, or if you want a seat you have to sit fairly far back from the stage. We had a great spot close to the side, but with people banging into us all night to walk back and forth to bar, bathrooms etc it distracts from the show.
Prime spot for a zanjam finger touch with Jim though
OTHER THAN THAT - great show. I liked Shabazz on Wordless a lot. Run thru, Lay Low, Masterplan - all great.
NEXT TIME - 2 nights at the Fox would be incredible.
what did shabazz do during wordless? rap?

yes - and played some drums and laptops or something.

I tweeted for Masterplan, so I was happy to get it. However, I thought the whole idea was to curate songs for the encore? Hard to do when the encore is only three songs.
I'm also pretty sure no one requested Circuital for the opener on the forum thread.
Definitely a head-scratcher.

The spot would have been great if they could somehow leave a walkway in front of the steps so people can get through - know what i mean? Hard to be really into the music and constantly being shuffled or almost knocked over or defending the space. Is it always like that for you in that spot?? Maybe across the way it would have been better but I know you would've had to give up your finger love.

I think the curation technically was for openers and encores, but in other shows it seemed like they were going through requests and putting a lot of them in. Maybe my imagination. Thank you for tweeting Masterplan! :)
Beautiful venue, but overall I thought this was a pretty disappointing final show. Setlist was very reminiscent of the Circuital tour and not in line with the rest of the Spontaneous Curation series- I had a really tough time connecting. Kinda baffling why they wouldn't have closed out with a bang. Ah well, enjoyed the shit out of my other five shows, and Red Rocks and Columbus couldn't really be topped anyway. Thanks for a great summer boys!
It's funny because in the sober light of day, and looking at the set on paper, it does seem like it was an underwhelming show, especially given the factors you guys mentioned (tour closer, the only bay area show, the curation series, etc).... however in the moment last night, I had one of my best times ever at an MMJ show. Had a lot to do with my company, my buzz, and that it was my first and only MMJ show of 2012... I mention it because despite my own excessive music snobbery, MMJ transcends it all.
What a show! :cheesy:
It was my least favorite MMJ show of the last two months by a wide margin. I actually came into it with lower expectations because I figured it really couldn't compete with Forecastle, Red Rocks or the Wiltern shows. And it didn't. That being said, a mediocre MMJ show is better than the best show from a lot of other bands.
I felt it was on par with the Bill Graham show from the fall — strong, but not their best.
It wasn't on the same level as some of the other Bay Area MMJ shows — Okonokos, NYE, Greek '08, Fox Theater last year.
Last night was my first show at the Greek, beautiful spot! Hung with Miss Evon and Crispy, so great to be at the rail with the two of you!!!
Not sure if it's the sound there or how it was mixed but the guitars were not as pronounced which made the set seem like more of a groove than the boys rockin out. That was great! Second have of Dondante was sexy; Carl's extended sax jam with Jim. Slow thru Lay Low was fantastic! That drummer from Shabazz is pretty bad ass, and though the other dude not a great raper, they really added something to OBH. Totally took us by surprise!
Set list was not very spontaneous, seemed like it was directed to a newer audience. Was a real bummer about the 5 songs getting knocked off, but the sound check really made up for that.
edit: not very spontaneous

I wasn't disappointed by the show at all. It's great to see a band playing at the top of their game, no matter what they are playing. Once I heard Masterplan, they could have played kazoo solos for the rest of the night and I would have been happy. One of the things that I love about this band is that each show has a completely different vibe. It's hard to compare them because of that. I was up front at the Fox last year and on the rail at BGCA. I decided to sit back and enjoy last night's show from the stone benches. I find that it's easier to focus on the music from a distance because your senses aren't being overloaded from the lights and watching the band. I was in front of the right stack, and it sounded so incredible! I was with a young woman who had never really experienced a full MMJ show before, and she was loving it. Maybe I was living vicariously through her. She was so excited to hear Gideon! It was great. So, I understand how you felt last night, mahgeetah. I was feeling it, too. Seeing everybody in the Greek Theatre under a trance during Dondante was amazing.
It sounds like I am the only person that didn't like Shabazz Palaces at the Wiltern or the Greek. I thought they were flat out awful and really did not appreciate their appearance during the last two songs of MMJ's set - right or wrong, for me, it totally detracted from the woefully short encore.

I've never tweeted before, so who knows if they ever saw it? But, if they did, and it helped them to play it, then you're very welcome. That was my white whale. Now, my white whale has sailed on to Strangulation! I mean, it's cool they didn't play all the songs I wanted. I still have a reason to go to MMJ shows!

You're definitely not the only person. I am very uncomfortable with acts where you don't exactly know when to applaud.
The Greek is a very challenging place to see a show. I never know where to stand. It seems that standing at the rail gives you a very limited view (and a sore neck). I find if you stand towards the back of the lower bowl, the acoustics are bad and you can hear everyone around you talking instead of the music. Last night was definitely my best experience there, and I was sitting for most of the show. Go figure.

WTF with Shabazz Palaces? I went to all 3 Wiltern shows. People were disappointed with Iron and Wine around me. EVERYONE was fucking totally confused about S.P. It was not horrible, but NO ONE I saw was even remotely into it. I guess Jim is one P.C. M Effer.
My wife and I had a great time at the Greek show! It looks like it was one of the shortest shows of the tour song count-wise (probably time-wise too), and it wasn't a bustout chasers show, but it was absolutely a hot one. From Masterplan to the end, I was locked in and they were playing masterfully. I was also sitting up near buymycar, and the sound was perfect: LOUD and clear. Slow Slow Tune, Steam Engine and Dondante were exceptional.
It might be blasphemous to say this, but I thought Old Sept Blues was (sonically speaking) the weakest link of the night. I love the song, and it's from one of my favorite albums, but I've thought for a while that many of old, "quiet" TTF/AD songs just don't play as well in larger venues with their current sound rig and live mix. It's not because it's a slower tune either; Slow Slow Tune was probably my favorite song of the night, but one sounds 2D and the other sounds 3D (or 4D? :cheesy:). I think it probably has everything to do with the fact that the older tunes didn't have Carl and Bo as collaborators, Jim's songwriting has improved, and they now have the forsight of writing songs they know they'll be playing in larger venues. And don't get me wrong, I loved hearing Old Sept Blues, it just sounded flat next to the others.
The last five songs to close out the main set were just smoked, it was awesome. I thought the Shabazz Palaces collaboration on Wordless Chorus was really good, one of the things I'm most excited to (hopefully) listen back to at some point. I'm assuming the guy was freestyling, and he really had a strong flow. At the end of his run, Jim began weaving in his Wordless howls, and they were just flying together. They gave each other big hugs after that...it was an exciting, spontaneous collaboration. I felt like SP could've left the stage for OBH though, as that they didn't add to the song like they did for WC and it felt like they'd outstayed their welcome, especially since it was the last song of the night and tour.
I did see a couple mic stands set up, so hopefully we'll get to hear this show at some point. I understand people's dissapointment, and I wish we could've heard more, but for the time they played, I had about as much fun at this one as any other MMJ show I've been to.

Good stuff bbill. I completely agree with your assessment of Slow Slow Tune and Ole' September Blues. SST is just great live (one of my top 3 from Circuital) and I get where you're coming from on Sept. Blues. It was a highlight at Under the Overpass and T5, but out of context with the other songs you mentioned, I can see how it can sound weak without a completely new rearrangement.
I just watched the vid below and it was easily the most exciting Wordless I've seen. As a loooong time fan of Ishmael Butler (listening to him for a decade before discovering MMJ) it was just so cool to see him onstage with them freestyling. Gotta find my BLowout Comb now.

I agree completely with bbill. It was a fantastic show for me, all because of my wonderful show buddies, bluesky and ms Y, taking care of me before the show, and totally freaking out with me on the rail, Carl Side. The length was a disappointment, and was made worse by watching the clock ticking toward 9 and knowing they'd have to stop at 11. But once that thing got rolling, it was one of the more intense and fun 2-hours I'd ever had. I remember looking at the clock again after Masterplan, and thinking, "We've still got another hour plus, and they are going to kick our asses with whatever they've got left."
I was reminded again why I love being on the rail in front of Carl so much, it seemed like he spent half the show at the edge of the stage playing right above, at us, around us, and into us, and he was so badass, tearing his stuff to shreds.
"Slow, slow.......SO!" That transition from Slow Slow Tune into Steam Engine was completely awesome, Slow is easily my favorite Circuital tune to hear live. Dondante was absolutely trance-inducing and as heavy and powerful as I'd ever heard. Another case of thinking it's the best I've ever seen, but then I always say that.
I really enjoyed the collaboration with the Shabazz guys, I thought it was fun as hell.
It seems I don't care what or how long these guys play, they blow me away every fucking time.

Ok, that was interesting. I get that everybody doesn't like Shabazz Palaces, but that was interesting. It's a nice change and Butler handles the microphone very competently. Thanks for finding that and putting it here, Ruckus.

I was listening to Alec Baldwin's radio/podcast show "Here's the Thing" yesterday, an interview with Billy Joel. Joel said that, as his fame grew and he was playing to larger crowds (arenas and stadiums), he wrote songs that were "bigger" and had more energy. I think the TTF and AD albums have a more coffeehouse, small club sound, whereas ISM, Z, EU, and C have all expanded sound that parallels the appearances of PH, CB, and BK.
I thought Shabazz Palaces was great, including their opening set and especially on Wordless. Jim James tweeted about them a year or two ago and that's how I got into em. But I get if you don't know their stuff or are into that kind of hip hop, it would be tough to enjoy. I thought the Wordless collab was epic, the OBH collab not so much... seems the band got out of rhythm during the last verse. Might have been Patrick's mid-song tempo changes he was doing a bunch of (worked REALLY well on the Dondante jam) during the night. No real complaints though, was just awesome to see them mix it up.
sure the time could've been managed better, and was this one of the lesser shows on the SCS tour...of course. but it was still pretty fantastic and it's just that the bar has been raised to such a degree on the SCS tour.
my boys, once again, had one of the best experiences of their lives (although on the car ride home they did agree that Brooklyn was better). I'm sorry if I offend anyone w/ this call, but I think my son Spencer is the biggest MMJ fan on planet Earth. Hear me out....he loves the band unconditionally, knows every single song, and isn't jaded like most of us are. He loves it all, no matter what!

Is it weird that the song I enjoyed the most after Masterplan and Dondante was Evil Urges? It sounded really good, and set the tone for the rest of the show. I was definitely ready for it now (then).
I was lucky and got I Think I'm Going To Hell at my very first MMJ show back in 2006. That show also included By My Car, Butch Cassidy, Bermuda Highway, Into The Woods, and Knot Comes Loose. I was spoiled at my very first MMJ show.

Setlist was a bit mediocre, and frankly, First Light is a dud...yet the highs were as brilliant as ever. Dondante was mindblowing...didn't even recognize the intro. If they'd have cut out a few Circuital tracks and gone with the full encore, I'd have been happy as a clam. Instead I was about as happy as a crawfish, which is, needless to say, still pretty happy.

Yeah, between that and the typical jam band and southern rock nonsense, you really get the sense that this person doesn't know the band at all.
Switching gears, did anyone else think they started the show with a pattern? I thought after 2 Circuital songs and 2 Evil Urges songs that they would next play 2 Z songs, but then they played 2 It Still Moves songs. I thought that perhaps they would play 2 songs from each album in reverse chronological order. That thought went away quickly.
