Anyone hear anything? Any ideas?
It's all wishes at this point, I think. To me, it depends on how big they wanna pull it. If they go Wiltern route, and we can expect at least one person as big as Iron and Wine, that'd be badass.
Possibilites in my mind: The Head and the Heart, Dr. Dog, Deer Tick, Alabama Shakes, Houndmouth, Pres Hall, Wax Fang, Ben Sollee, probably others that I'm not thinking of.
I think of those, Deer Tick and THATH will probably have some kind of NYE events, so they may be unlikely.
In my perfect world, we'd get a combination of 3 of either Dr. D, The Head and the Heart, Alabama Shakes, Houndmouth, and Wax Fang.
alabama shakes are a great call. i'd really like to see brittany and jim on stage again.
If what I heard at Forecastle is correct, then Kevin is no longer in Wax Fang, which might make them unlikely too. I don't know if MMJ has a relationship with the other 2 original dudes of Fang, or they were just tight with Kevin.
Alabama Shakes would be awesome - the weather at Newport kept some magic from happening.
How about a guest appearance from Eryka Badu?!?! A Tyrone for the ages....
Since Jim is promoting Floating Action so much, maybe we'll get a performance from them.
Fully - Floating Action would be awesome.
I don't care to see Badu there, honestly.
I would be pretty ecstatic with Neko Case, but then again I'm a fan.
Heartless Bastards would also be great. I hope The Walkmen are asked to play one night since they're based out of Brooklyn.
Seeing Miss Brittany at one of the shows would be awesome.
And please no BoH. They've played long enough with Jacket over the past year.
I didn't even THINK about Floating Action but it just makes so much sense! Though I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.
Basically, I'm just hoping for a band that would make a sweet guest for a sit-in later in MMJ's set.
Would love to see one of the following: Deer Tick, Delta Spirit, Dr. Dog, Alabama Shakes.
I personally will be campaigning for one of the slots to go to The Felice Brothers. Their latest album has seen them taking a note from bands like MMJ and Wilco in the sense that they are getting more experimental/trippy with their studio efforts. Not just straight up folky songs but some real interesting stuff. I think they'd work well together.
Felice Bros would be great! I was one of those that liked the new album
Given that it's a small venue and the exposure would be minimal, I'd venture they go down the path of T5 with smaller acts as openers. Hell, I figure the Shakes with another album out would be drawing just as much as the Jacket if not more.
I'm guessing logistically, it would have to be bands based in NYC but a Louisville trifecta of Houndmouth, Cabin, and Fang would be neat.
And of course I'll take a Futurebirds, Deer Tick, Dr. Dog triple.
would love---Heartless Bastards, Dr. Dog, Felice Bros, and DEER TICK (no way I see this happening--but would be incredible)
everyone is crushing it on the suggestions. I definitely lean HATH, Dr. Dog and Felice Brothers.

1. Floating Action
2. Neko Case
3. Iron and Wine
Or they could change it to "an evening with" and not have any openers.....and just play for three hours. That wouldn't be bad at all.
Not only would this not be bad, it would be the best of all possible situations. However, for a 3 night run that seems pretty unfeasable. Plus they have already listed special guests as tba. Something fresh would be nice.

yeah that´d be pretty awesome. I don't see it happening, but I'd be stoked.
plus 9 hours of no repeats is pushing it. thatd almost be t5 packed into 3 nights.

If they did that, they might be too tired to kick ass on NYE. We wouldn't want that - even those of us who aren't going to NYE.

Well, then, I fully support Fully in supporting the manonthemoon (nice harvest moon, BTW) supporting Penny (my 2 cents).
I love all the suport.
It seems like the band takes the fans 2 cents to heart so maybe they'll get behind this idea. Changing back to the old Forum and spontaneous curation sets are indications that they're paying attention. They care about the fans, and clearly we care about them and their music. Can't wait for these three nights.

Screw the evening with stuff. I love openers and I'm sure whatever they pick will be great.
good call on charles bradley. i feel like that is a safe bet. from brooklyn and they were at forecastle.
I'd love me some Charles Bradley. Not saying anyone could upstage the Jacket, but I don't know if I'd want to go on after him -- no matter who I was. Unfortunately, the Screamin Eagle of Soul does have dates in Chicago on December 30th and 31st, so while entirely possible, it may be a little unlikely.
SIDE NOTE -- if this MMJ New Years blowout didn't go down, I can assure you I'd be ringing in the New Year in as funky a fashion as possible with Charles Bradley and the Daptone gang in Chicago.

WOW! What a great NYE show!
I would be happy with Dr. Dog opening all 3 nights. Or if ya'll saw the Fruit Bats set at Forecastle, I think you would agree, they would be a killer opener(P.S.- MMJ watched the Fruit bats whole set side-stage at forecastle). And not to state the obvious, but how bout Ravenna Colt opening one night, and then helping close. RUN THRU>PHONE!!! And the Eryka Badu guest appearance would be amazing, but that sounds like more of a New Years thing....

Thanks Sara  This makes perfect sense besides the fact that Kaufman is on his label. You just got the sense that it was more of an up and comer instead of an established act. Since I missed their set at Forecastle, this has me stoked. I was hoping for three different openers but this gives you the idea that Floating Action will open maybe all three nights?

Damn. As if I didn't want to go bad enought already.
I definitely don't want the same opener 3 nights.
He said a couple of nights. To me, that might mean one of the Port Chester nights and then opening on NYE in Boston?
Yeah, I can't imagine him doing two night at PC. That wouldn't be even. Either three different openers or one act all three nights will be what happens. I hope we get three different acts. It would be really awesome for Seth if he could open on NYE. That would be some great exposure for him.

i agree. theyre on my list of hopefulls with Floating Action and Hound Mouth and Dr. Dog. any 3 of these 4 would be best.
Of bands that are actually in the realm of possibility, Dr. Dog has to be the one that I hope for the most. I guess Floating Action is basically a definite for at least one night which is cool with me. I saw them the other night and liked them even more than I thought I would
Dream:
27 - Dr. Dog
28 - M. Ward
29 - Charles Bradley
More Realistic Guess:
27 - Calexico
28 - The Felice Brothers
29 - Shabazz Palaces
I'm doubting it will happen but I'd be completely blown away if Felice Brothers opened for them. Who can I bother to make this happen? MMJ twitter or something like that?
dream:
dean wareham!
dr dog
yo la tango
Delta Rae would be nice
I highly doubt its going to be Calexico but I would love to be surprised. I think they are going to stick with more regional bands, but I guess if I'm making the trip so can Calexico. Seeing Going to Acapulco live would be worth the whole trip

Yea they're definitely in the area (they're from Upstate NY anyway) so it's possible. Just not sure if it will happen. I honestly feel like it's a great fit as their newest album (Celebration, Florida) reminds me of MMJ in the sense that they've altered their sound and are doing more with production/effects. Talked with the lead singer of Floating Action tonight and I asked what was next for them and he said they had a show with MMJ for one night of their three night run in December  He said the 27th but I don't think he was 100% sure which show. Just though I'd share with you all.

Excellent work, Grey!
disclaimer: i wouldnt mind multiple nights of floating action, if there had to be multiple nights of anyone... im just curious about these openers. they matter almost as much as the set list right now. they could add so much more joy to this trip if theyre 3 good ones.
Well I've never seen Floating Action but from the reactions of most here it sounds like this is a good one. I'm excited
I´ve never seen FA either, but his music is fantastic. Desert Etiquette is the first record i heard by him and its awesome. I'm new to his other stuff.
I didn't realize that it was just Seth on the studio albums. This makes me a little upset that I got everyone to sign my "Fake Blood" vinyl but I guess that's not a huge deal. Anyway, I enjoyed Floating Action but the crowd sucked so there wasn't any energy. I think they'd be great with a MMJ crowd. They also had two drummers which I thought was interesting.
Damn, I was really hoping Seth would open all three nights. I find myself cheering for the guy and this would have been some real nice exposure. Either way, some is better than none!

Nice to meet you too. If you are looking for the place to request opening songs for the Port Chester shows, go the the main My Morning Jacket site and then underneath the Roll Call tab, it will say "Message Board". If you are a member of Roll Call, you can find the thread to request songs. All of us would love to see a show with just MMJ on the bill, but they've said that the opening bands are TBA, so we have been speculating for awhile now about which bands it will be.

There's so much great music out there that I enjoy seeing an opening act or two even if it's a band with whom I'm not familiar. Of course, I could do without Band of Horses.
I posted this on facebook, but in case anybody didn't see it, I talked with Scott from Dr. Dog on Friday night, and it didn't sound like they were going to be in for the PC run, but he spoke very highly of Jim, and seemed eager to work together again.
The only associated act that I would like to see is Jeff The Brotherhood, awesome live band with a raw sound, would kill for a few more shows with them this year.

And I'll pretty much be missing my dream show. But y'all are going to be happy campers. I think there are a few haters out there but for the most part I think it will stoke almost everyone!
...i'm thinking BOH..or DEER TICK! going back through Zam's posts:
I've only seen four opening bands, so here goes:
1) Trombone Shorty
2) Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
3) Band of Horses
4) Shabazz Palaces
Note: I did not hate Shabazz Palaces like many others did, and like I thought I would. It was actually kind of cool background music. I didn't have a problem with them at all, and I thought I was going to be really sour on them.
Dream opener:
Deer Tick
White Denim
Trombone Shorty again PS-i will be OVER THE MOON if it's Deer Tick. I have to miss their NYC show, then missing them open for DBT because of Port Chester and missing them on NYE in Boston! This would be the BEST POSSIBLE SCENARIO.
You're a sneaky one, Christine! I cannot confirm nor deny. I've said all I'm gonna say!

What about Sixto Rodriguez?
Have any of you seen 'Searching for Sugarman'? If you haven't you should, great inspiring story and such a beautiful being. I think he's very MMJ...

I'm a HUGE fan of them from back when they were tiny. My second Felice Brothers show in 2008 featured them as an opening act and they blew me away. Now they've grown to be bigger and more popular/known than Felice Brothers but they are still great friends and tour together at times.
As for listening...I love all their work. Their first two albums are really well done but are more of a solo-type of venture with lead singer John McCauley basically doing the heavy lifting. Some of songs are a bit softer on the album compared they are played live but they're still great.
But the Black Dirt Sessions and beyond are really where they started to turn into a more straight up rock and roll band....reminding me of classic acts (check out their cover of Maybellene). One of the reasons for this is the addition of Ian O'Neill as a lead guitarist. He had played in a few bands before but when they added him to Deer Tick and eventually got Rob on piano/saxophone then they really started to gel.
"Mange" from Black Dirt Sessions is an absolute BEAST when played live. Below I'll post a video of the extended song from a show a few years ago.

Another favorite of mine is "Clownin' Around" from the newest LP "Divine Providence". This song is a rare chance to hear the drummer take lead vocals and it's the most beautiful sounding song about a serial killer/rapist that I've ever heard.

"On the 27th, HT faves Deer Tick will open for MMJ. On the 28th,
the large afrobeat act Antibalas will support Jim James and Co. while Black Mountain, North Carolina's Floating Action serve as opener on the 29th. Tickets for all three shows are still available though three-day passes are sold out."

Naysayers be damned, these shows just got even more fun
would've preferred something different, but can't say that wont be fun for an opener. plus, 2/3 of my wishes are true. pretty cool

I just checked them out on iTunes & YouTube...they sound like a funky cross between Hot Tuna & MM&W
Very cool...it will be a dance party on the floor
plus it just makes sense to have an opener that includes a horn section

Damn I wish I had tickets to the first night, or that Deer Tick would play night 3. Would absolutely love to see them. I guess I need to get familiar with Floating Action.
If you like afrobeat at all, you'll like Antibalas...very surprising choice for an opener!
Also recently got word that Marco Benevento is doing a late show (post phish) on the 27th I think...only downside is that it's in the city. Still might make a run for the last train for that show though. I don't get too many chances to see Marco and by the time that show ends, I can catch the first train back to Port Chester.
I wonder what other late shows will be announced...
DEER TICK!!!!!
I never have heard of any of these openers, but after checking them out...wow...PC3 can't come soon enough!!!

underdone tater tots
Great choices for openers. I would love to see MMJ bring some of the Antibalas horns up to Boston for NYE. Or maybe they will revive the Boston Horns from the 2006 Avalon show.

If youre going to play It Makes No Difference, why not play it with the horns right? They could hang around and play some songs with MMJ on night 3 also though, like the Deerland Horns(?) did at T5
Pumped about Deer Tick. Just saw them again a few days ago, awesome as usual. The set was heavy on the newer stuff, which I barely know, but they did play Dirty Dishes so I can't complain too much.
YouTube has Deer Tick's 2012 NPFF...watching it now
I would expect Deer Tick to sit in on Isn't it A Pity. That would probably make the most sense to me.

I know but I want a big horn section. I love PHJB but would like a horn section that is a little bit fuller. Like two trombones, 2 sax players, 2 trumpets and 1 sousaphone. A Man can dream right?
Afrobeat yeah!

Middle Brother was the record of 2011, imo
Really looking forward to Deer Tick!
Anybody else agree the guys should avoid adding horns to One Big Holiday?
i've seen it twice live and didn't care for it. The recordings don't sound too good either. Just rock that shit please.
I dig 'em on the others though.

Even though I can't make these shows, I'm really excited for the cover possibilities on the night Deer Tick opens. They, along with MMJ are two of the better bands at covering people that I know of...you have to imagine they'll bust out something awesome.

My first favorite song was Don't Stop Loving Me Now, I definitely recommend that one off the self-titled album. Perhaps the self-titled album + Desert Etiquette + Fake Blood... ok maybe that's more than just a start...
Here's two lovely tunes:
Floating Action Dont stop( loving me now) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDpehJz2ACE#)
Floating Action - Not What I Came For (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJADLEn2_hQ#ws)
i loooovvvee Desert Etiquette. The Balance is probably my favorite FA song.
Nice, thanks for the tips. What I heard was ok but I have a feeling I need to listen to this more than once to really get into it. I'm gonna buy Desert Etiquette off amazon.
For me it wa definitely a grower. It seemed so simple and mellow to me when I started out, which is not really my thing. Now I can't stop listening to it though.
might require creating an account to edit, but heres a map for everyone to map out where they are traveling from for the PC and Boston shows
http://www.pinmaps.net/map/10886/ewind/mmj-port-chester-and-boston (http://www.pinmaps.net/map/10886/ewind/mmj-port-chester-and-boston)
So Desert Etiquette has pretty much completely sunk in at this point and man this is a really good album. I'm not articulate enough to explain why I like music, I just know when something sounds good, and this is it. Once I spend more time with this I'm gonna have to check out their other 2 releases. (With all that being said I still would rather see Deer Tick open! )
