Good luck to everyone in her path. Looks like everyone on the coast from N.C - Maine could be feeling her wrath, as well as inland states getting pounded with lots of rain, and possible heavy snow.
I hope everyone here is spared any major trouble, and this storm doesn't turn out to be nearly as dire as predicted.
Be safe, and well everyone.

Totally get that having raised two myself, but I'll tell you what, if that's the worst thing that happens from this storm, tell your kids I'll send a couple of big bags of candy their way.
That's a trade I'd gladly take at this point.
I have a 5yo and 9yo (the older will be a Zombie Scientist and the little will be a Zombie Hunter) and if we can't go out for Halloween due to high winds and rain (Southern Ontario is projected to get significant rain and up to 80km/h winds due to the sheer width of this system) I'm just going to let them eat all of our candy and have a dance party with their friends. If the power is on!
We are heading out today to stock up in case of power outages.
I just want to send out good thoughts to all the peeps on the east coast as then prep for the storm. Be safe folks!
Be safe everyone!
Stay safe everyone in the path.

Eric, totally thinking of you! Did you evacuate yet? I have had enough, and the storm hasn't even started yet. The sense of panic is palpable around here. Some of the people in our town have hired moving trucks and removed all of their furniture....we got slammed with Irene last year, so no one is taking chances.
We have a generator, 2 sump pumps, french drains etc. etc. Just hoping that the big old trees around here don't fall on our houses :embarrassed:
Be well everyone!

All schools closed up here in NH, and I know we won't be getting anything as serious as many of you. Take care and be safe. I hope no one raked their yard recently...
Be safe everyone. Better to over prepare. Don't take any chances!
I read and liked the following: Better to be overprepared and underwhelmed than underprepared and overwhelmed. <--- I'm following this plan.
im reading that LBI is having all kinds of rescues.....ericm please check back in when you can!
So far so good here in Morris County. I know my work is already closed tomorrow (Newark/Essex)
My company closed our offices in the Central PA area... which is fine with me since the Markets are closed tomorrow anyway!

yea, i wasn't even following that story at all until fatty mentioned it. I'm too self absorbed. Still have power and no water.....knock wood.
Power was out then on the out then on now been out for nearly 2 hours. There have been tons of transformers going off. More than I can count, but there's artificial light on the horizon so not everyone is down I guess.
For those of you trying to understand geographically, I'm about 30 miles west of tdb and 90 miles north-northwest of Eric. My town was nearly destroyed in Irene but bounced back after freak floods hit the area. I don't anticipate that hitting us this time since the ground wasn't too saturated prior to this storm. The wind is the worst I've experienced and I've been on the beach during a few Cat 1's before.
Hope everyone is safe!
It's been all over the news here today. I hope you're all alright.
Hoping Eric is OK and didn't suffer too much damage. Seems like coastal NJ got it very bad.
I'm wondering how he's doing too. Hopefully, he's just without power. Check in when you can, Eric.

Yeah, worried about that guy and his place. Hope we hear from him soon, and that all our east-coasters are safe.
I echo the sentiments in hoping all our forum friends in the path of this huge storm are OK.
I can't imagine what it must have been like being on the east coast. Here in Ohio, we had it pretty bad up along the lake. It looked like a freaking hurricane blowing in off of Lake Erie last night and we had sustained 30-40 mph winds that continue today. I've never seen anything like this here in Ohio.
When my girls see hurricanes on the news they always get scared and I always tell them that we can't have hurricanes in Ohio. They weren't so sure of that going to bed last night with the wind and rain beating down on our house... :undecided:
stay safe my friends, and we can all celebrate life in 2 months together
Don't have details, but reports from Eric, Jeff, and Trish are that they are OK. I imagine Eric evacuated. Any word from Brooke, Penny, or any of our other NYC gals?
Brooke just posted that she's ok, but without power and cell service.
Lake LaGuardia?

thanks for the updates johnny & fully.
it's such a weird thing to be so geographically removed from this storm and to hear from people in the heart of it via twitter. a friend of mine in NJ posted this:
Please consider volunteering when the call goes out. Too soon to know where help is needed but the call will be loud when it comes.
I heard from Ericm by text, that he is ok. He did evacuate. Penny texted me last night that she was ok but without power, and keeping her phone off to conserve.
I worry very much for our friend Brian with the bagpipes (i can't remember his forum name, but we met him at MPP in 2010).....he is from Breezy Point in Queens where 80 homes burned....
There is really unbelievable devastation surrounding us here in the tri state area...hoping and praying that things get better soon, and that all of our friends are safe.

Dodobird! That's him. Now the count is over 100 homes decimated there...miraculously, there don't seem to have been any fatalities.
As we see the pictures and coverage of the aftermath, I try to remain upbeat and remind myself that there are could have been many more injuries and deaths - a total of 51 dead and a nuber of people missing, so far.
The problem now seems to be gas lines, and a town called Mantoloking is on fire - not accessible from the mainland...unable to be reached by firefighters.

Not sure this is the thread for your "look at me" show, Sticky. Take it somewhere else.
Sounds like all our Jacketeers are safe and sound. Good news.
tbd810 is neither old, stupid, nor ugly. This is not the appropriate time for this. ericm is facing home damage or loss as are many, many more. I live in an area that's had many severe tornados and I disagree that no one cares when it happens in the middle of the country. This is the most highly populated area of the nation. The potential for disaster was of epic proportions. While I consider it lucky that there was as limited damage as there was, I seriously doubt that anyone who lost their home, possessions or life would feel that they were lucky.

Well I know that Brooke and I didn't have anywhere to go and it's been scary and we've been without power and showers and water etc. You can't get money from the ATMs and there's a 6pm curfew where I am. I'm hoping it lets up soon. I'm one of the few who got power (it's off and on) back on my street. Also lines for the pay phones are ridiculous..today i had to move apartments in the dark. Been a trying time, today I just sort of lost it.
I think Brooke checked into a hotel up in midtown because lower Manhattan is without anything. I know Headhunter is without power and running a bit short on food-they're hoping something opens up tomorrow. Long Island looks like a disaster zone. Glad everyone else around here is good? trish, eric, chode, ynwa, lil sis, etc

Probably have no power for at least another week but have many friends who lost alot with trees falling on their houses, cars etc.
No water damage by us but I really feel for all those poor souls in NJ and those who have lost houses due to fires and floods.
Happy to be back at work today to try and catch up and nice to have an internet again.

Brian-dodo bird is A ok    he said they evacuated Breezy Point. His block is under water and that the next one over looks like a bomb hit it. So sad. That is a very tight community out there, hoping that they find their biggest strength in that fact.
Brian said that he has not been on since they switched the forum, now he knows. He will be at the Capital for Friday and Saturday! He ask that I let you all know he is looking for 2 tickets for Thursday at Port Chester. PM him if you have any leads.
Thanks Bluesky! I am back at work today. First time logging on here in ages. When they switched the format I got turned off and never came back.
Please keep Breezy Point in your thougths and prayers. It looks like a scene from World War II. Lucky my house is still standing and we will be able to get some clothes and other items out. I was living there full time with my parents. We are with my brother Pat in Bayside Queens now. Our community so very strong and most people plan to re-build.
Looking forward to the Capital Theatre!!! It anyone has 2 extras for Thursday night please PM me! I will play the bagpipes at your Chirstmas party for free!!
Cheers,
B
Holy hell was Sandy a bitch! I live in Bucks County, PA (right across from Trenton, NJ) & we got slammed pretty hard. We haven't had power since Monday but it appears that we may get it back tonight. Fingers crossed. Our house took no noticable damage but many in our area were not so lucky. My office opened today so I was able to get interweb access & check on all you fine folks. Glad to hear everyone made it through relatively safe!
Thoughts going out to all those affected. I'm hoping ericm's house survived. Long beach Island got fucking rocked. My family has a house there & from initial reports it sounds like we only got flooding on our lower floor. We may have gotten super lucky. Time will tell.
You guys remember JBones72? His place was demolished out on Garrettson Beach--he's safe and staying with his folks in NJ, they're still without power. Thoughts go out to him and to Dodo. Glad to hear from you.
Peafunk--hope you and Mrs. P and baby are doing okay and get power back soon.
Oh man, JBOnes. Hope everyone is hanging in there mentally. It's been a rough go for people around here, and there have been lives lost. I think it's starting to wear on people - the lack of power, lack of ability to get around due to the mass transit issues, the lack of GAS! It's like the 1970s around here with the gas lines. Anyone as (OLD) as me remember those days? I can remember being in the car with my Mom, and the license plate number would determine which days you could get gas. It was like that back then, only this time, there are cars and people in long lines, standing and waiting for hours.
As with most things in life, there are bright sides to things. The comeraderie and support of communities pulling together has been inspiring and healing. I have said about 100 times over the past few days how very lucky we were to have come through this unscathed. We have done what we could here and there to help out, but generally people's spirits are pretty high considering the circumstances. Again, I am not in a hard hit area, but I am close to those areas, and have many many friends and families who have been displaced.
I am really thinking of ericm and LBI all the time...it really seems to be utterly gone. I know that he and all of the others will get through this, and life will go on as it has before.
Thanks to all of you sweeties for your concern :)
See ya in PC! xo
Thanks, Penny! Everyone is well. My in-laws live about 40 minutes away & they never lost power. Mrs. & baby Peafunk were able to get there last night so at least they didn't have to sleep in a cold house again. I'm still staying close to our house. There were a rash of burglaries a few towns away so I'm keeping our house on lockdown.
I got to take a warm shower today for the 1st time since Sunday. It was heavenly

Glad everyone else around here is good? trish, eric, chode, ynwa, lil sis, etc
and yes, hope dodobird's okay, too...his folks had a house in breezy and i think he lived up near poughkeepsie or westchester?
Hang in there, Penny.

Hey all, managed to make it in to nyc today on the first LIRR train to run.
House has no power and trees down everywhere but I consider us lucky.
Hope all of you in the MMJ community fared ok and thanks for the good thoughts and vibes.
Glad that you were able to get to work today. Positive vibrations being sent from New Orleans!
Happy to see so many posts from the folks were were affected by Sandy...you guys remain in our thoughts and prayers. Hoping that power and clean running water gets restored as soon as possible! Electricity and hot water are incredible mood lifters
Continue to be safe, y'all...
Stay safe, warm and fed. I echo all the other positive thoughts. Our prayers and good wishes are with all those affected by this shit of a storm. I messaged one roll call friend in WV - sherryburyblast and she said it's been stressfull, but she is doing ok.
Glad everyone is safe. My area is pretty much alright. A couple trees down and shingles from my roof in my yard.
Glad to hear back from those in the area! My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected. Being from a family of many people employed in emergency rescue type jobs, I want to say a big thank you to all of those people working around the clock. Stay safe everyone!
CHIMMJFAN
good to hear everyone is safe...I have been really busy at work the past three nights because all the sick kids since it went from 80 degrees to 40 in a day, therefore i have been unable to really check the boards...glad to hear the thorn in the side of this board is gone as well...
having worked now and in the icu the night of the april 27th tornadoes my thoughts and prayers go out to all of those in the healthcare industry trying to manage this crisis...you have no idea what it's like when something like this happens...when you have a person on a ventilator and vasoactive drugs to keep their blood pressure from bottoming out and then the power as well as the generators go out...utter chaos...not to mention if you have to be evacuated...without power you have to manually bag a ventilated patient with your hand...just think about how tiring that could get because if you aren't bagging...they aren't breathing
thank you again to all of those that continuously checked on us last year during the tornado...i only hope our prayers for you guys have helped as much as yours did for us
Hey y'all...just saw this on another message forum. ConEd is issuing refunds for lost food:
http://www.coned.com/customercentral/lawclaims.asp (http://www.coned.com/customercentral/lawclaims.asp)
The information below does not apply to outages resulting from Hurricane Sandy.
If you have incurred spoilage losses during a power outage, you may file a claim with Con Edison. To file a claim, either fill out a claim form or write a letter within 30 days of the power outage.
Residential Customers:
You may file a claim, up to a maximum of $450, for actual losses of food spoiled due to lack of refrigeration.
Claims for food up to $200 must include an itemized list.
Claims for food over $200 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, cancelled checks, or photographs of spoiled items).
In addition, you may file a claim for actual losses of prescription medicine, spoiled due to lack of refrigeration.
You must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine).
We may also request authorization to enable Con Edison to verify the loss of prescription medicine.
Reimbursement for prescription medicine is not included in the $450 maximum for spoiled food.
Claims must be filed within 30 days of the date of the power outage.
Reimbursement is limited to food and medicine spoilage and is governed by Con Edison's electric rate schedule.
Losses for damage to motors, equipment, or appliances are not reimbursable under the electric rate schedule.
Not so lucky with LIPA
Will LIPA reimburse me for spoiled food?
LIPA is not liable for food spoilage or damage to customer property resulting from an act of nature, such as a major storm, which is beyond out immediate control.

Fiddle, holy cow!!!   Glad you're ok!!! Been sendin good vibes to everyone as often as possible....
Day 6 without power - that's the worst of it for us. Power slowly trickling in to the area. Not "low" on food but definitely feeling malnourished due to lack of fresh food. Beyond that, no damage to my house or body. Right now I'm down the shore with my parents dropping off supplies to people. Toms River, generally, is in better shape than up north. No gas lines, no outages. But the closer you get to Seaside and the islands the worse it gets. National Guard and Coast guard barricades, etc. Driving to Point now, expecting it to be much much worse.
Agh... sorry to hear your situation too, Chode... I wish you hot fresh awesome meals PRONTO!!! Glad your home is in good shape; hopefully power will be back very soon. Sending good positive thoughts and energy many times through every day to you guys.

Thanks - the shore is surreal. Like I said - there is this great facade of normalcy there with working stop lights, malls open, traffic that isn't for fuel. Even had a hot meal at a sports bar with all the games on (except I don't watch sports). No alcohol sales allowed though.
Beneath all that are schools that will remained closed for weeks because they are the only shelters for hundreds of families. There are busses overflowing with toys and blankets - things which we couldn't tell were donated or evacuated. Whole neighborhoods are patrolled by national guard outfits in full regalia and Humvees. Resident-only restrictions in most neighborhoods as well.
And if you didn't suspect it already - Seaside Heights and the surrounding communities have been declared a biohazard. They're saying a MINIMUM of 8 months to outwards of 2 years to restore the infrastructure alone. That's not rebuilding homes and businesses, that's just to get roads, pipes, and lines restored.
Ill post what few pics I could snap when power is restored. We're on day 7 now. Gettin' real old as it gets real cold.

That sounds serious. Glad you're getting by Choder, and hope things normalise for you really soon.
Finally got power last night at 6pm. 6 full days without power is quite "unfun" for lack of a better word. We had to completely empty our fridge as everything spoiled. I can't complain much though. There are a ton of people who have it MUCH worse. Thoughts going out to the people who really got it bad.
glad things are starting to turn around for you all. hope everyone is staying warm and fed. sending out golden warm positive energy your way!!!
Thanks everyone for all the good vibes, thoughts, and pm's.
We took it on the chin on LBI, as did so many others in the North East, but we're working hard to get back up. Fingers crossed we don't get hit again before we can replenish the beach, and rebuild the dunes. The dunes did their job, but now they're all gone, and right now we have NO protection from any ocean storm surge. Nothing to stop the ocean from easily meeting the bay. Even this coming NorEaster could prove to be too much, and wipe out what Sandy didn't, or set back any progress made in the past week.
We rode the storm out on LBI in a safe place on higher ground, with great dune protection, but had to evacuate my home bayside about eight hours before it came onshore. Even though it took on a shit ton of water, it's still standing somehow. The first floor is gutted, but as long as the inspection doesn't show any structural damage, I should be able to live upstairs, while redoing the downstairs. Very, very fortunate, as so many lost way more than I did. A few rooms of furniture, walls, appliances, and food is nothing compared to what I witnessed all last week.
We managed to stay all week and help as much as we could, until needing a break and coming to the mainland last night. Still no power on LBI, but we were well stocked, and prepared where we were. It helps to have sand in your toes I guess.
Outside of a movie,I've never seen anything like this, and hope to never again. So much destruction, and loss, as far as you can see. I know we have great people here, and just know that your reaching out, and sending good vibes helps. Please keep all those affected by this storm in your thoughts, and to anyone else out there affected, know that I'm thinking of you too, and sending some vibes your way from LBI.
Heading back either tonight or tomorrow to get back at it, and not sure when we'll get power, or be able to post again, but wanted to check in and say thanks to everyone before heading back.
Really looking forward to seeing everyones smiling faces in PC, and Boston.
Ps,
Sticky, I know you were just being you, and wouldn't have expected anything less, but you're off base on this one. If you aren't busy we could sure use a hand here, and maybe even some of your wit to lighten the mood. Can't promise some Jersey boy won't take a swing at ya, but I got your back as long as your hands and feet are working to help.
I'm so glad to hear from you, eric! I'm sorry you lost so much of your home, but you definitely have the right attitude. Hang in there. I know that all this devastation can be overwhelming. Take care of yourself. There's a beer with your name on it when I see you in Port Chester. Take care, friend.
FYI eric, I think sticky got the boot from the forum...believe it or not, the most offensive and ridiculous things of what he posted in this thread were removed (and rightfully so). Glad to hear you're doing ok, sorry about your property damage.
Just got our power back tonight after going a week without and waking up to 53 cold degrees in my house today.
We were still really lucky compared to many and my best wishes are sent out to Eric and others who had it so much worse. This has been some really rough times for those in NY, NJ and CT and Beth and I really appreciate the support of our friends here.
Going without heat and power and all that for a week is challenging and not fun but nothing compared to flooding and major house damage that has hit over 100,000 people on Long Island alone.
The vinyl will be spinning soon.
eric, so relieved to see your post. i didn't know you lived on the island but based on concerned posts in this thread i could tell you were in a vulnerable area.
i hope you're able to keep your place and have a roof over your head.
man, so glad to hear that everyone here is safe. would that you could all just come sleep on my couch and have a shower. xo, friends!

Sandy can never destroy the Jersey Shore's natural beauty.
Link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/elchode/sets/72157631939384954/) to the photos I took. There aren't many, and they're not too dramatic.
Very happy to hear you made it through OK, eric. I didn't know you were toughing it out in LBI. One of our neighbors on West Indiana Ave did the same & was nearly swept away when he went out his front door. Scared the shit out of him.
I hope the damage to your 1st floor isn't too extensive & that you'll be back to normal as soon as possible. I'm looking forward to meeting up for a drink next summer! We'll make it happen next time, promise
Some progress being made on LBI. Yesterday they finally opened the Island back up to residents. Even though I've been able to get on being a contractor, and helping with the cleanup, until now residents have only been allowed on for one day last week to get essentials.
While it's great to have people back and moving forward, yesterday was a really tough day. It was the first time many have been on the Island since Sandy, and it was tough to see many of my friends and neighbors seeing the destruction, and loss to their places for the first time.
While a lot of them are summer residents, it still sucks big time to see their pain, and know that a place they associate with beautiful, stress free, happy memories is now a cause for heartache.
We did get some more good news as it looks like natural gas will be restored to the Island by December 1st,so a lot of year round residents should be able to stay through the winter. That'll help not only for morale, but there is so much cleanup, and rebuilding needed that the sooner we can get to work, the better. Having heat will definitely help a lot of people get a head start on that during the winter.
Fingers crossed I'll be one of them, but won't know til November 20th. That's the earliest I can get an inspector to come to the house to check the structure, and also assess the other flood damage. Still no heat at my place, and can't flip the electric on til we know the extent of the damage the salt water did. Not going to chance coming this far, and risk a fire. Really hoping we get a fairly mild November, and no freezing temps.
Thanks again for all the good thoughts, and please continue to keep all those affected by Sandy in your thoughts. There are so many who have it much worse than I do, and could really use some good vibes.
eric thanks for the update! glad things are starting to happen for you and your island neighbors. fingers crossed you hear good news!

Not on the board as much as the old days but glad to see some LBI ers made out ok. My moms place got hit hard its right across the street from Joeys Pizza which is one of the lowest spots on the island. Alot of my customers and friends houses did ok which is good. Eric what company do you own/ work at? Im the owner of Perennial Gardens.
