The good thing is that BOH and The Candles are on top which means that while they are performing we can go see good bands. Maybe it won't be so crowded since all of the pop music lovers will be going to find out that every day is indeed like a funeral and that hey ho song. (I don't hate The Candles, but they are no Avett Brothers and it annoys me how it is becoming very popular to dress like you have a third class ticket on the Titanic. Men in high waisted wool trousers with small suspenders over a cream workshirt with a neckerchief and a handlebar mustache. Please.

I'm not putting myself on the official Roll Call list yet, but it's almost definite.  Insane line up, and I don't think it will be too huge.  Plus the Atlanta aquarium is supposed to be awesome.

Anyone think it's a good idea to plan a meetup on Friday night similar to Forecastle's Thurs night meetup? (since the fest is 2 day)...ATL's a bit more spread out than L-ville so this might be logistically a nightmare.

the VIP tix are kind of pricey compared to the reg ticket--i'm not VIP would be worth it at a non-camping fest

doesn't look like it's that close to the MARTA station--the site mentions buses but i'm sure it still has to be a somewhat close walk..

A good friend lives in Atlanta that we have been needing to visit for a while.  No better time then May 4-5.  I'll ask about hotels during my due diligence call to them tonight.

The park looks beautiful.  I can't tell how big the field is.  Any festival veterans think the size of this fest is comparable to Newport?  It can't be nearly as big as a Coachella can it?

The VIP is tempting due to the "special acoustic performances."

I'm a local and can shed some light on accommodations for visitors.

The Georgian is super-classy and super-pricey, so for those on a budget it is out of the question.
You can find economical hotels in the "downtown" area which will be close enough to the venues. There is a Hyatt, Marriot, Hilton and others in this area.  FYI...Downtown is not fun (very little watering holes or anything else after sundown).  You will/should do most of your partying in the Old 4th area or Little 5 Points, but there is very little lodging in those areas.

NOTE...I do not recommend traveling on foot from the venue back to a downtown hotel.  This area is very sketchy.  Hotel shuttles should be able to get you there but I'm not sure about picking you up.  Take a cab or bum a ride from somebody.  There is not a MARTA station near either venue.  You can try a MARTA bus but it would be worth the extra coin to jump in a cab, trust me.

Alternatives are staying in the Midtown, Buckhead, or Decatur neighborhoods which are further from the venue but offer better bars/restaurants.

I'm somewhat tempted by this, and may do it if I end up being disappointed with Newport and Bonnaroo (I'll hit one of the three).

The VIP is tempting for the possible acoustic performances, but I hate the vagueness of it.  Usually when you do those things hoping for something awesome, what you get ends up falling pretty short of that.  Just wish we had details of what to expect on that front.

I hope you come. Yeah, I'd like to do the VIP, but I think I'll just to the P ticket instead with a ticket to the Black Angels late night show. I wish there was more info on that.

You just gave me a goat epileptic seizure with that last video. I know I like the Black Angels and I'm open to Goat.  In fact, I'm going to miss seeing them in Nashville on May 5 because I'm going to this fest so I really want to see them there. I kind of hope this fest is over early enough on Sunday that I can get back home or part way home that night, so that I can go to work on Monday.

I am toying with this festival too.   Love the lineup.   Would love to know when it ends too, as I should really be at work on Monday am and the last flight out Sun is 9:45 pm.   If that means leaving early and missing a headliner, I'm fine w/ that.

I'd go for VIP for the appeal of special acoustic performances.   For most festivals it would be a risk depending on who it is, but I like 80% of the lineup so whatever it is, I'll probably be happy.   But, biggest draw is being w/ y'all so if no-one else is, I'll just save the $$.

I was just discussing this with my girlfriend today . Trying to figure out a path from the Hotels to the park .

Have to add that the Atlanta music fan is great . Saw Yo La Tengo /Calexico in Buckhead a couple of weeks ago and the crowd was great . Everyone digging the show appropriately ,IMO

Exactly.  A deluge like that can't strike twice.  It's an extra $85 per day, which I think is reasonable.  However, it's not clear if you can see any of the stages from the "lounge."

I just listened to the Lumineers for the first time.  If they are the last band on Sunday, I could miss them and go with a late Sunday flight.  Of course, I'd like to arrange flights knowing who will play when.  That might not be known for a while and airfare could go up by then.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of these bands as special acoustic performances.  I really hope Sunday night is BOH > Lumineers. I'd hate for the Lumineers to be Saturday night although that could happen since Saturday night is the bigger draw. I just want to see Jim and everybody except BoH. The Lumineers, I can take or leave.  I am a little confused or I just haven't looked at the map really well. Are these two parks right beside each other? And is this area near Five Points? Cause I love Five Points. I have some great memories of that area.

My sweet lord I am loving this lineup and I dont even listen to BoH or DBT (agree on Lumineers as a headliner being a headscratcher). Probably wasnt going to go to a JJ solo show so this kills 2 carrier pigeons with 1 rock. 2 Day Pass only $99?! Im looking for a job in VA, or possibly NC or SC, so if Im living down there I dont see how I could pass this up.

It's not the size of the font, it's the motion of the ocean.

Also, when you go to the shaky knees website, Jim is one of the top four listed. I wonder where that will put him? earlier on Saturday or on Sunday. It's important. I really hope he doesn't open for BoH. But at least I could leave after Jim instead of having to watch them again. I'm pretty sure I've seen them as many times as I'll ever need to see them in my entire life.

Post away. I couldn't get the 10 add on because I was on my stupid phone buying them. Now, the people I'm staying with aren't sure if they will stay that late, however late that actually is. Is Flake coming with you?

I actually already have tickets for GOAT and Black Angels when they come to DC, so those are not the biggest draw for me, though it is a great pairing (they are playing in DC on different nights).

There's nothing rare on this lineup or that you can't see elsewhere, but it's just a great collection of stuff, and would be awesome to see you folks again.

Is there a hotel that people have decided on?  Also, are people really trying to fly out Sunday night?  I feel that it is a bit risky to book a Sunday night flight before seeing the schedule.  If all it meant, though, was missing one of the two meh headliners, though, getting home Sunday night sounds grand.

I'm official (I got the regular tix but didn't get the late night).  I'm not familiar with them but will give them some listens and could add it on.

I read that doors open at noon but have no idea what time it ends.

Beth I would assume one of Lumineers/BoH will be sat and one would be sunday, based on the size of their fonts?

That's what I think as well.  The website says there are three stages.

This has me wondering if some of the smaller bands (bottom 3 rows on the lineup bill) will play both days. There's only 26 bands excluding the late night 2, so 13 bands per day needs 3 stages?? I guess its a possibility bands besides the headliners play longer sets than your typical festival set, but J Roddy & the Biz' website has them listed for both days so the thought crossed my mind. I think that would be cool if thats the case because it would allow people to see more bands theyve probably never heard of.

....and if that were the case Id totally see J Roddy both days so Im hoping Im right!!

Adam, the late show will be really fun.  Black Angels are a psych-rock band from Austin.  Nothing life-changing, but really good live and just very fun music to trip out to.  I've seen them 6 or 7 times and always really enjoyed it.

The Black Angels - Doves - Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0K2jfNI6_k#)

The Black Angels - Young Men Dead (Rockpalast 11') (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrSVJ_Gj-2M#ws)

The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream (Rockpalast 11') (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXqRfCWSjJw#ws)

GOAT are a Swedish band that put out their first album last year.  It's almost like psych-fusion, or a psych-rock version of Antibalas, as someone sort of said earlier.  Looks crazy as all hell.

Goat - Run To Your Mama (Live @ What We Do is Secret at Strand, Stockholm) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SyPyBHJmiI#ws)

True, but almost all of the bands (including JJ, Delta Spirit) on the bill have both dates listed on their websites.  Probably means which days they are playing haven't been decided.  A few of the bands (The Joy F, Lucero, BOH) don't have either date listed at all on their website.

Thanks Mr. W for those clips.  I gave a listen on Spotify as well.  Not my favorite but probably cool live.

I'm in. Close to CLT, a great lineup ... early Valentine's Day gift from my gf. For those wondering, I did see that doors will open each day at noon, first band starts at 12:30, headliners will stop at 11.

I think the dates/times for each band/performer is supposed to be announced by the end of the month.

I made a bad call and booked a flight home Sunday early enough that I'll have to miss Oberhofer.  I think they'll be great.

The good news is that according to setlist.fm, Band of Horses is basically ignoring Mirage Rock and playing all of their old stuff on this tour.  They play between two and four Mirage Rock songs per night.

I got two free ponchos last weekend during a downpour at the Franklin Main Street Festival. They do advertise a fast food restaurant, but they are compact. Also, "i can bring you ponchos" would fit perfectly as a substitute of "I Will Sing You Songs"

Y'know, I never paid attention to this lineup, as there was no way I'd be going, but this is a phenomenal 2-day affair!  You lucky bastards!  The rain factor does suck, but I understand why Kyle is flying in for it.  I know a lot of folks got sick of Band of Horses, as they opened for MMJ so much last year and we all did multiple shows, but I'd be happy to see them as part of a festival like this.  The headliners are the least interesting part of the lineup though.

Jim, Heartless Bastards, Drive By Truckers, Gary Clark, Dr. Dog, Delta Spirit, Joy Formidable, Kurt Vile, Shovel and Rope... wow!

Have a great time and stay dry!

yeah, I'm pretty bummed too.   Shaky Knees posted "the show goes on rain or shine" on Facebook - but I've heard that before.   See, for ex- Forecastle and Newport last year.   Both said the same thing then ended up still getting screwed up bad because of rain, with cancellations.

I also don't see making the latenight show after standing in heavy rain for 11 hours.

Ok, after one day of standing in the pouring rain all day, I wimped out and came home. I'm still chilled and miserable, but I did have a great time yesterday. Of course today, the rain has let up quite a bit, but by the time I realized it, I was already 3 hrs into my 4 hour drive home. Jim's show was great, as was Gary Clark, Jr. I wish I saw the entire set of The Joy Formidable, but we left a little early to get a good spot for Lucero who spend a good twenty minutes or more of their slot soundchecking. I thought about going to see J Roddy with some of the others, but decided to stick with scosby and his friend to see Jim again and we were later joined by APR. It didn't disappoint. I've seen Jim and his band play now 4 times on this tour and each time there's been something new and interesting. The band is growing tighter and more comfortable with each other. Jim's sax solo during one of the jams this time was as beautiful as I've heard him play. I would definitely go back and do this festival again. It's small enough that it's very managable. They did a great job of scheduling so there wasn't much conflict, they had great food, and the plus side of the rain was that not as many people were there so it was very easy to get close to the stage.

Side note - I had a friend at Beale Street Music fest while I was at Shaky Knees. We enjoyed comparing what was going on in our individual mud pits. I'm pretty sure that by the time I left, I was walking through a good seven inches of mud. Thank you, boots. The best $20 I've spent in awhile.

That was by far the longest stretch of time I have ever stayed out in the rain.  It just did not stop and barely let up.

No surprises from Jim's set.  After the album he played The Right Place, Losin Yo Head, Changing World.  During State of the Art, he really belted out "And you pray for good RAAAAIIIIN."  His facial expression was right on.

I got to spend part of the day at the fest today.  The weather was perfect this afternoon, but I think it rained later.  I would definitely go to Shaky Knees again.   It's not too big at all and the lay out is great. Not too crowded either day (they said Sunday sold out) and you can get close to any stage.    Everything was close together and there were minimal lines.

I admire those of you who stayed the second day. I didn't make it--mostly because I had nothing to wear on my feet and didn't want to go buy another pair of boots...I've never experienced so much non-stop rain. The mud was so deep when I left on Sat night, I didn't even know if my boat shoes would hold. Very sad to have missed the Truckers.

Like Fully said, got to see a bit of The Joy Formidable and Lucero. Skipped Jim's show to see J Roddy and it was terrific---the new songs sound great. Walked over and caught the encore for Jim's show and stood right behind Ben Nichols..(word..).

Nice little festival----just the worst weather. I thought Bonnaroo 2005 was bad, rained on and off for 3 days straight, but at least there were a few hours here or there of let up, this just DID NOT STOP and the temps started to drop. A positive was there was hardly anyone there, nice small crowd.

Finally dried out and back in NC after a great weekend. I'll agree with everyone on here, twas a great festival considering it being a first-year event and the elements. Jim put on a great show, so glad I got to see him. Sometimes the rain just energizes both the performer and audience, and that's what happened here. Gary Clark Jr., Band of Horses were great as well on Sat. and then Drive-by Truckers just killed it on Sun. Lumineers probably shouldn't be closing a festival, but it wasn't horrible. They did cover Have You Ever Seen the Rain, which was fitting.

Be interesting to see next year's lineup. I found out that this festival is indeed named after the line in Steam Engine, so I'm sure they'd love to get MMJ in 2014.

Will also say was a little disappointed in Delta Spirit...they were incredible when I saw them last, opening for MMJ in Greensboro but sloppy this time around. Lead singer was blasted out of his mind.

On the flip side, seeing Dr. Dog for the first time was awesome. Really impressed. Wanted to make it out to Shovels and Rope, but got there too late. At least we had a bit of sunshine before the rains returned Sun. afternoon.
