is this for real?
Soul SuperJam ft. Jim James with John Oates, Zigaboo Modeliste (of the Meters), Preservation Hall Jazz Band and more TBA!
it's official
wow! my 'roo days are definitely behind me, but this will be stellar.
Ever since seeing MMJ break out the soul, funk, and r&b covers at their '08 late night set I have said Jim needs to host a soul/funk/r&b superjam at Bonnaroo. IT IS HAPPENING!!! HOLY F!! YESSSS!!!
Could this be the impetus that gets me to buy an Airstream to pull with the pickup I don't own yet and finally make it to Bonnaroo? Could be, could be.
i hope they webcast this and i hope somebody rips it.
I'm there.
Yep, ain't no way I'm missin' this. BACK TO THE FARM!
When I heard them announce this I almost had to get up from my desk and do a happy dance.
The lineup is great overall.
The only thing I'm confused about is the Ed Helms super jam?
Also (being greedy) I hope both of his sets are at night.

he plays bluegrass banjo. I'm pretty stoked that they are doing this. I hope it isn't in the earliest part of the heat.

I actually HAD to get up from my desk at work. I literally went BEET RED with happiness when I saw the lineup, and I was so flushed that someone asked if I had poison ivy. I went to go splash water on my face and it didn't work so I just went outside and walked around for 20 minutes.
The things music does to me!
Having been to the last 7, I was going to skip this year...
Nothing will keep me away from the farm after this announcement. Holy crap! Let's hope for late night as well. They always used to be late night, but last year it was in the afternoon.
What a great lineup as well. Paul McCartney is the only headliner I care much about, but Wilco, David Byrne, Trombone Shorty, Father John Misty and a bunch of other sets will keep me really happy.

The Soul SuperJam will feature Jim James with John Oates, Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and other surprise guests while the Ed Helms Bluegrass Situation Superjam with weave in a variety of string players. Jim James has performed at Bonnaroo seven times in the past decade while Modeliste appeared at the festival in 2011 as part of The Original Meters' reunion. Preservation Hall Jazz Band have appeared at Bonnaroo numerous times in a variety of capacities: They've hosted their own weekend-long stage, performed with Del McCoury, recorded Bonnaroo's 10th anniversary theme song, hosted a film screening, sat in with My Morning Jacket on the massive What Stage and participated in a New Orleans-themed SuperJam featuring Dr. John and members of The Black Keys. This will be Oates' first Bonnaroo appearance. (His longtime partner Daryl Hall played the festival in 2008 with Chromeo.)
"There is another SuperJam or two already in the works," Capps hints. "The SuperJam is one of the special, iconic features of Bonnaroo—in some cases the ideas of the SuperJam take a while to come together and gel with the right plays. Having a SuperJam with Jim James is something that has been discussed for two or three years now and it is really exciting to see it come together."
holy shit!
Someone school this fool. What's the big deal with Superjam? Never been to Bonnaroo; probably won't anytime soon.
They do a superjam (or multiple ) every bonnaroo where they basically put badass musicians together that don't normally play together. They're quite often among the highlights of the festival. Whole superjam thing actually started during Nola jazz fest (2001 I believe) by superfly productions (who put on the roo) when they put on a show with trey anastasio (phish) les claypool (primus) and Stuart copeland (the police). The three actually ended up making an album and did a tour billed as oysterhead. Oysterhead actually did a reunion show at the Roo sometime in the past few years??
and the ALMIGHTY d'angelo played live for the first time in ten or so years last year at a superjam with questlove.
not that i was there
I can't even tell you how verkelmpt I am over this!! I cannot believe I am going to miss Jim playing with Zig!! Zig is such a big part of our musical lives over here in SF, we've known him for years. And we all saw how great the John Oates Move on Up was at Red Rocks. And PHJB, always a treat. Trombone Shorty could sit in, too. This is going to be one sick show. Bonnaroo will without a doubt be streamed again this year and I plan on having a viewing party all weekend. Yay technology! :cheesy:

I was! It was great, but I couldn't get close enough. This year I'll be camping out ahead of time.
Gettin' to the tent early will definitely be the key for this one! I love that they put these SuperJams in tents for the intimacy, but MAN, those tents get PACKED! Think I'll show up a few hours early with a bag of dehydrated veggies and snack on those until show time.
Awesome one-off events like this separate Bonnaroo from EVERY other festival on the planet! There's just something special in the air! However, as I grow more and more excited for this show, I also DREAD the conflicts. They're going to have to schedule some pretty sweet shit against this to split the crowds.
Looks like it will be on Saturday.

This news couldn't be better! Rumor is that Macca is playing on Friday and Petty on Sunday, leaving M+S as the headliner on Saturday. Assuming the SuperJam is around midnight on Saturday, I can camp out at the front of the tent in peace while the majority of the crowd will be distracted by Mumford and his Sons.

Oysterhead played Roo in 2006...almost had a phish reunion at that superjam...I know Trey and Mike Gordon ended up out there together, pretty sure Page might have made an appearance too, I think it was everyone but Fish...my favorite year and the Bonnaroo that literally changed my life

I've been lucky to grab the rail for Superjams in the past. The D'Angelo one was amazing as was the one I was on the rail in '06 for with Trey & Mike of Phish playing with Benevento/Russo Duo as well as bringing Phil Lesh out for a few tunes.
It takes sacrifice but in the end it's worth it. I know my fellow MMJ fans on this board are hardcore for camping out to get a good spot so I'm not worried. This past year with D'angelo, the Superjam was late night after headliners. I ended up leaving a pre-headliner set by The Roots way early just to grab a rail spot. When I got to the tent the Superjam was in there was a show that was finishing up. I was able to get in the middle for it and when they ended the set a few of ur found our way to the rail.
Then the wait. Which could be worse....4-6 hours of waiting but once that Superjam starts....man it's awesome. Going to try hard to be on the rail or in the first few rows for this one.

Since Petty's headling, it might be apropriate to mention that the waiting is the hardest part. :drum:
I didn't get there early because I was taking a nap during RHCP. I was tired and it seemed like the best time to do it.
The hardest part will be convincing the wife to wait 4-6 hours. I'll have to build up some good will before then.
...Off to do the dishes.

When I'm when other people who can't/won't wait for a show, I kick them to the curb and tell them to go see what they want. We can meet up at a designated spot after the show. It usually results in a win-win for both of us. I get to obsessively camp out for the rail and see the show. They get to go see something they want and not bring my fun down or point out how weird I am. I'm not saying they don't point it out later, but I can just ignore them at that point.

Hanging out before the shows can be pretty fun themselves. Discussions with the other people waiting pass the time. Some naps can help as well. There's nothing like that feeling when they are minutes from playing and you're right up there with thousand's behind you. I love it.

Yea, that can be brutal. Most of the people who are waiting there are cool and if you're friendly they will hold your spot to run out and hit up a porta potty. Of course, this doesn't work as easily when it's only a half hour before the show and people are arriving but if you plan it out it's possible. In the past I would get food and drink to bring to the spot and then ask someone if it's okay to run to garbage/bathroom and they are generally cool about letting you back in.
The pre-show wait at Roo is awesome! Well, I mean, it sucks to wait. But if you meet some cool, like-minded people, time can really fly! Glad to hear that there will be plenty of us posting up nice and early for this once in a lifetime show. Strength in numbers!

That's really what it comes down to, doesn't it? I mean....the Jim James solo set at Roo will be fantastic but nothing wildly different from the other shows he will play.
But this Superjam? Never going to see this again. I am so happy I chose to wait on the rail for the D'Angelo one last year. At the time we only knew Questlove was involved/curating it so it could have turned out worse. I'm not a diehard D'Angelo fan but the fact that it was his first show in years added to the buzz and I loved the songs they chose.
I can't wait to see who else will join in on this show AND what songs they choose.
none of you know what waiting is about until you have done it with me...right beth? i wouldn't have it any other way...10.5 hours at the hangout is my all time long
and no...i wouldn't admit that anywhere else in the world but here
that may come off like i am an elitist waiter...i am not at all, i promise
we're all in it together anyway
scosby, you are the best wait-er there ever was. You did a great job holding Tubetop's and my spot for us so that we could go eat at Tarry Lodge, one of my favorite non-line-waiting or show moments of that week. scosby may show up when Centeroo opens on Saturday to get his spot for the Superjam unless Jim is playing elsewhere that day, which I'm guessing will be the case. Who can we imagine will join him besides Oates? I always feel weird just for saying Oates. It should be with Hall too. I wonder if they are still friends. I hope so. I'm glad Oates it there. We'll get to hear a Move On Up for sure. PHJB, of course. Maybe Calexico? Maybe who?
Confirmed to be a late night set :)
They're not the only Music City talent on this year's bill: Part-time Nashvillian John Oates will be part of a "Superjam" with Jim James of southern rockers My Morning Jacket. James is planning a late-night jam inspired by classic soul music revues, according to Oates, who said that was "right up my alley."
"I think it's an 'Only at Bonnaroo (event)'" he said. "It's one of those things where it has to be the perfect storm of musicality and personal relationships."
Oates said he was excited to head to Bonnaroo, particularly after hearing raves from Hall & Oates bandmate Daryl Hall, who performed there in 2010.
"All I know is it's going to be late at night, and that means it's going to be pretty nuts, and I'm into nuts."

Awesome find! That just gets me even MORE fired up. Modeled after classic soul revues?! Oh baby, sign me up!
Also, in regards to all-time stage campout records, my personal best was 8 hours for the Stripes at Roo in 2007. Totally worth it!
[Off-topic warning] But SPEAKING OF Roo and camping out for awesome spots -- in 2008, I spoke to two guys on THURSDAY NIGHT who had already posted up in front of an EMPTY Which Stage in order to be there front and center on the rail for MMJ the following night. I've always wondered -- are you guys on this board??? My friend and I shared a smoke with you guys and we talked about our MMJ album rankings. Camping out OVERNIGHT is insane -- but for the show that followed, that wait must have been SO WORTH IT!

I bet it was. I got there late and was so far back they could have had Jack and Meg impersonators on stage and I wouldn't have been able to see the difference. Great, great show but I was so far back that it feels like I wasn't even there lol.

I think he hurt his knee in San Francisco in December of 2011 doing it. That may be why he quit. If I'm right about that, and I could easily be wrong, it would explain why we don't get the knee slides any longer. I loved them too though. However, I've got a bad knee and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Plus then he wouldn't be able to do all the other awesome stuff he does on stage. But I miss it too, TMPT2.
Also, Itrainmonkeys, I lurk over at inforoo, but you are inforoo. If you find out anything good, please pass it on to us. I sometimes get overwhelmed when i visit over there, but it's the best place to go for all roo needs.
Any chance this gets a LN Which?
Just reading inforoo this seems to be one of the more anticipated sets.
all of the superjams have always been in tents...but it is possible they throw us a curveball
Inforoo has a lot of Jim James/MMJ fans so they're definitely excited about it. I do think it gets a tent though. Likely while 3 other amazing late nights are going on. Conflicts are going to suck but I'm not missing this set for anything. The biggest disappointing conflict I would have is if Wilco gets a late night (not likely but possible) and conflict with the Superjam. I'm willing to miss just about anything else without minding but I'd love to catch Wilco at Roo again.
Count me in for the wait

Bought mine today too, O! I can't stop checking and re-checking the lineup now - hard to believe how deep it is....ear to ear all day :bath:
I got mine! I got a phone call from someone who was freaking out bc he was afraid they would sell out before he got through the cue. We had discussed getting Alabama Shakes tickets the other day and I thought that was what he was freaking out about, so I told him to get me one. I asked him how much and when he said they were around $300 with charges I freaked out thinking he meant the shakes. Then the lightbulb went on. All of this occurred while I was ordering at a restaurant, btw! :)
This is going to be a wonderful thing! I wonder what types of songs he'll do? Any MMJ perhaps? I was super disappointed with the superjam last year after the rumors of Jack White then camping for a spot in the second row only to have two total artists in the superjam that I've heard of.

I guess everyone has there own experience. I loved the superjam last year. It was one of the best things about the entire festival. Particularly last year when the lineup was so weak.
Got my tickets Saturday. See you guys on the farm

Ah yeah Bonnaroo superjams are what dreams are made of. Seriously the only one that disappointed me was 2008 when I heard rumors of Tom Waits making an appearance. Yes I will admit, I was going to miss an MMJ super set to see Mr. Waits. What can I say I love that guy. Luckily I quickly discovered it was just cover songs so I trekked through the torrential downpour to catch MMJ. Shew glad I did!
This years superjam will be worth the price of admissions alone! I can not wait to see what Jim, John, and whoever else joins have in store late night as no conflict in the schedule will cause me to miss this one!
Looks like there's gonna be a good number of us at this show -- and what a show it will be!
Just under 12 weeks 'till we're all on the farm! Not that I'm counting or anything.
These D'Angelo videos from last year are just getting me more and more juiced for Jim's Jam this year.
I'm just about ready for some pre-show press to come out. Though I guess it'll be another month or so before we get any hints dropped in regards to material. I'm expecting a lot of the covers MMJ already plays -- "All Night Long" and "Move On Up" seem like locks -- but I'm hoping for some actual free-flow jammin'!
100% SPECULATION -- but am I alone in thinkin' Questlove is making the trip to the farm this year as an unannounced guest at the SuperJam? He's essentially the SuperJam God, so I imagine he's got an open invite. And with JJ and the Roots playing together only three days later, maybe they'll do a little warmin' up on the farm? I can only hope!
I don't think Questlove will be coming down for this year's Superjam. They have announced the main drummer for the set would be Zigaboo Modeliste, so I don't see Questlove making the trip down....as awesome as that would be.

Since "That is all", I'm going to assume that he's going to be part of it?
Added to the lineup today! SHIT GON GET FUNKY!
Nice! I'm thinking this will be the highlight of the whole festival this year.
I could not be happier that the SuperJam is at the heart of one of the bigger schedule conflicts of the weekend. Billy Idol, Weird Al and R. Kelly going on at the same time as the SuperJam -- should divide the crowd up nicely!
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS!
I said it when the lineup dropped, and now that the schedule is here, I believe it even more -- on paper, this has the potential to be one of the best Roos of all time!
The best part is that we'll have Mumford and sons to skip so we can camp for the rail! I'm so glad there isn't a headliner I need to see that night. Thnx Roo Schedulers for that one, even though the Friday schedule has some doozies!
Overall, I'm pretty happy with this schedule! Going to skip the fuck out of Mumford and Lumineers to rock out with SIMO before heading to get a sweet spot for the SuperJam! Hard to believe we're almost under the six week mark. And according to the post on the Roo site, they've still "got a few more surprises in store"! WOO!

POW!!!
There are a few conflicts like Jim's set and Wilco, but overall I am pleased. Ha yeah plenty of time to camp out for the Jim danceparty!
I'm loving that the name of the Superjam has been slowly evolving into a Japanese game show title "Super-fun Dance Party Good Times #1" or whatever it is now haha. That being said, an appearance by Carl would be amazing
FINALLY! A SuperJam hype up article, courtesy of Rolling Stone:
QuoteAfter playing six Bonnaroos with MMJ, James is excited to hit the Tennessee fest next month on his own, leading the legendary late-night Super Jam session, billed this year as the Rock N' Soul Dance Party Super Jam, featuring James, John Oates, Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Bilal and Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham. "We've thought about it a lot," says James. "It's going to be a celebratory dance party where people just have a good time."
But he's also eager to indulge in his tradition of wandering the festival grounds like a fan. "I've seen so many amazing things there. A lot of my favorite memories have been running around after dark through the grounds and going out to the campgrounds. You just feel so wild and free, like you're in an alternate universe. At Bonnaroo, the grounds are so huge, you really do get this alternate universe to go be a different person for a few days, and kind of reflect on the rest of your life and run around like a wild savage through the grass. Anything goes.
"There's something about the place," James adds. "I don't know what to call it – maybe energetic resonance. I think people feel like they're at home when they're there. They feel welcome there, but there's a spirit of adventure. You feel both, but you also feel this limitless possibility you get when you're on an adventure."
Love that Jim loves the Roo as much as we do. Should be a magical evening!

I cannot wait!!! I know some people find roo to be too much, but I love joining the tribe for the weekend. It feels like I've come home when I get there each year.
It keeps getting better and better. From an interview with John Oates...Check this out:
Quote
We're talking to you today for a couple of reason, but first because you have a show coming up in about 3 weeks at Bonnaroo as part of the Rock and Soul Dance Party Superjam. Can you tell us how that came about?
Yeah. That's really exciting. I'm really excited to work with Jim James on this project. It got started when Carl Broemel, My Morning Jacket's guitar player, he and I got to know each other a little bit and he invited me to jam with those guys out at Red Rocks in Colorado because we live in Colorado as well as in Nashville. So my wife and I went to the show and we really enjoyed the show and at the end I came out and did a couple of songs with them during the encore and it was just this magic that happened. We just really hit it off personally and musically. A few months after that, I got a call from My Morning Jacket's manager who said Jim James was going to head up this year's Superjam and asked if I'd be interested in being the musical director and help him pull it together because he wanted to do kind of a rock and soul dance party type show. And I said of course! I was really into it. So Jim and I have been working together for a couple of months to assemble this really amazing group of musicians and put the song list together and everything. It's been really a lot of fun.
We're really getting into the home stretch now. We've got the musicians, we've got everything set, we've got the song list set. Of course, there's going to be some surprises because at Bonnaroo you never know who is going to show up at the side of the stage and want to sing a song with us. So we're keeping the setlist open for possibilities. But at the same time, we have this amazing-- I mean it's funk and rock and dance-- it's everything from '70s soul to Motown to The Band to Prince. You name it, we got it. Every song is just fantastic.
Surprise artists notwithstanding, the announced band is pretty darn good. One Rock and Roll Hall of Famer in Larry Graham, and Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters who has been nominated, and on top of it The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. That's a heck of a lineup!
Yep. We just got Cyril Baptiste to be our percussionist, and he's just an unbelievable percussionist. Then we have what I'm calling our "house band" which is made up of some A-list Nashville studio musicians. We have Wendy Moten and Becca Bramlett who are female background and lead vocalists who are absolutely incredible. Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket is going to be playing guitar as well as myself. It just keeps going. We've got a lot of other people waiting in the wings. It's going to be great.
I'm assuming with Zigaboo Modeliste and Cyril Baptiste we can expect some New Orleans Funk in there as well?
Zig is actually the one who suggested Baptiste because they've played together. When you're putting together a new group of musicians, it's good to have some folks who have played together. And even though this is kind of a put together band, we have that. Cyril and Zig have played together. The keyboard player we're using has toured the world with me in my solo band. The other bassist we're using, Steve Mackie, is someone I've used on a lot of my records. Of course Carl plays with Jim. There's a lot of sympatico with the players even though it's something new.
People who may only know your work with Hall & Oates in the '70s and '80s may be surprised that you're doing a Soul Superjam, but you have a lot of soul songwriting in your background.
Well, you know, "soul" is a very interesting name. To me soul music is any music that moves you. It transcends race and nationality and all those things. I like to say it's any music that moves the soul and moves the heart. So to me it's really all about great songs and stuff that resonates and connects. I don't care what genre it's in, whether it's bluegrass or Native American chants, Irish-Celtic music, Motown, Philly, it's all the same to me.

What a fucking scoop! Nice find itrainmonkeys!
Carl?! You gotta be kidding me!! Just when I thought I couldn't possibly be any more excited for this. If Jim and Carl are there, you just KNOW Pat is gonna wanna show up -- even if just to shake some maracas!
Call me crazy but I'm thinking this may go down as the MMJ-related event of the year.
What time are we going to start camping out for the rail?
I think we should all meet in Manchester tomorrow and just get them to build the stage around us.
Whippy, if you do go all Clockwork Orange, I hope it's not in that costume, which is extremely weak. Alex demands a true codpiece!

Carl's name officially added on the bonnaroo superjam line-up page. Rly hoping he'll be part of the "house band" now.
maybe every 3 days or so they'll add another member of the band.... :drum:
That stage is going to be full...and YES, CARL!!!!
I guess Jim won't be playing much guitar eh? Not that I'm complaining. I think my new plan is to set up right in front of Carl's rig. Is there anything better than having Carl rock in your face?!
And man, this lineup gets more ridiculously awesome by the minute. How much equipment can they possibly fit on one of those tent stages??! There are well over a dozen musicians already, and interviews with Ashley Capps seem to hint that there are even more surprises in store. Woo! Two weeks!
Do you folks think it is likely that a taper will be able to record this show? Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
Tapers often record the shows. I've got quite a few recordings from Bonnaroo over the years.
I can't remember them doing it, but they tape everything. Last year's superjam has had several videos released.
Looks like they are now saying no rain this year. From past experiences, it just will not feel right without some rain while Jim is there.
I am hoping that short surprise show on Sunday is a Jim and Carl acoustic set. Or hell just a Carl set would be great!

How about it being live streamed? I know a lot of the "main" shows get streamed live. Could this "Soul SuperJam" get sent out to the rest of us - live? (just-a-hopin'-and-a-wishin').
I doubt this show gets streamed live but they'll definitely be filming it.....either for DVDs or to release videos on youtube (like they're doing for last year's).

Okay, seriously though, we'll be on the farm in a week, is no one else freaking out with excitement?!
I just know this Superjam is going to make me feel good inside, the only question is HOW good???
Well, I guess there's another question -- how early are you guys getting there? I plan on checking out SIMO and then heading over to the tent around 9:30. If we all wait together, we know who to protect when the inevitable hooligans-pushing-to-front bullshit happens. I have tremendous box-out abilities and these skills will be on full display all weekend. I'll be happy to help whoever I can!

I am definitely freaking out! Particularly since they've altered Friday's lineup slightly in order to add the Rap Superjam. Come early and strength in numbers, O.
I'll be heading to the Superjam tent after Bjork.
Yea, I'll be there slightly before Bjork ends and will be down to help hold down some real estate. People definitely be arrive, rush, and push as it gets really close to the beginning of the set. Hopefully we're able to fill up a decent amount of likeminded folks.

Yup. I skimmed past and read one or two titles but not all of them. Wondering if there will be more and he just listed a handful. Either way...this is going to be amazing.

Surely.
He only listed one song in the encore...
I couldn't resist reading the song titles -- thanks for posting!
I don't think any of those songs are a particular surprise, they fit the farm and the whole "all-night groove" theme perfectly! Particularly looking forward to "Shaky Ground" -- Ivan Neville did a cover of this on the farm a few years ago that was oh so tasty.

i know me...if I hadn't looked it would have bothered me all week and I would have eventually asked one of you before the show saturday night...if I'm gonna find out I may as well find out a week before... ITR and Big Herm, and oistheone pm's sent...need your personal info so we can get together before saturday and rock out at some shows
My will is strong. I'm going to try and resist looking at the song titles in the article.
It's been about 2 minutes since I saw the posting about it, and I've made it this far.
I skimmed it, but I only saw the names of three songs. I've never known myself to have real strong will power.
Had a double rainbow after some heavy showers today in Manchester! Man you people got some monster will power. Ha, I scrolled all the way to the bottom and read the setlist first. Any guesses on who the unnamed special guest will be? He did quote a certain someone in that article.

I'm pretty sure I know someone who taped it, and if he did he is very good about sharing stuff. I'll report back, but I'm sure a recording will pop up soon.
This was a truly special set, a unicorn of a show. Song selection was spectacular. It did not feel thrown together like other Superjam's, it was instead a perfectly curated Rock & Soul Dance Party organized by the man, Jim James. The guests were perfectly chosen. Lee Fields tore up Standing on Shaky Ground, Billy Idol on Bang a Gong was brilliant, and Brittany Howard was phenomenal as usual. Instant Karma, led by Jim, was just a magical moment. Everyone was dancing and singing the chorus at the top of their lungs. I've been to Bonnaroo 6 times and cannot remember a crowd this large dancing so hard for 2 hours.
The MVP's of the evening have to be the rhythm section. Zigaboo, Graham, and Oates were so tight all night long. PHJB sounded the best they ever have IMO. They played a full set by themselves before the Superjam and totally won over a skeptical (and young) crowd. Jim joined them for st. James Infirmary and one other song. Anyway, that band had a groove to it that wouldn't quit.
I really hope to get a bootleg for this one. A memento I can keep along with the memory. I was on the fence about Bonnaroo this year until they announced the Rock & Soul Superjam. Bought my ticket immediately and was worth every penny. Oh, there were other stellar performances as well, Paul McCartney, Father John Misty, Django Django, Portugal The Man, trombone Shorty, and Lee Fields come to mind, but the Superjam was an epic one time event. Now back to the real world...

So the show was a bit of a blur for me, but Jim had lead vocals on only a handful of songs. Use Me and Instant Karma come to mind, and maybe Don't Do It. He shared verses with John Oates on Move On Up. Larry Graham did much of the lead vocals on the Sly songs, supported by Brittany Howard if I recall properly.
I loved every minute of the show, but Jim's songs really stood out for me. His vocal range is perfectly suited for both of these songs. Lee Fields really tore up Standing on Shaky Ground. I'd love to hear Jim and Lee do something together in the future. Lee Fields IS soul music.

That is about my memory, too. Instant Karma was pure Jim singing it, many others were a mix, with Jim being pretty prominent, like Don't Do It. Jim sang Prince's lines in 1999 with other people in the band singing the lines sung by others in the song. Jim definitely sang on all the Sly and the Family Stone stuff, but Larry Graham was the main vocalist.
I feel like I will be happy for weeks from that show. That set alone would have made the whole trip worth it, but obviously lots of other great sets as well. Other highlights that come to mind are Swans, Baroness, Foals, Jim's solo set, Django Django, Father John Misty, Jason Isbell, and Glen Hansard.
I'm sure Frank Turner would have been a highlight, but I passed on seeing him knowing I have a few other chances coming up to see him.
Just want to give some credit to Alana Rocklin for killing the bass on the Instant Karma, and Steve Mackey for playing bass on everything else except the Sly songs. Hard to go wrong with a trio like that!

Jim James and John Oates curate a Bonnaroo Superjam for the ages (http://www.examiner.com/article/jim-james-and-john-oates-curate-a-bonnaroo-superjam-for-the-ages)
Jim James is not a man known for doing things halfway. That's been proven time and again at Bonnaroo through his epic performances as part of My Morning Jacket and this year as a solo artist. So when it was announced that James would curate a soul music Superjam, Bonnaroo fans knew they were in for something special. What they did not know was that James had found an unlikely musical conspirator who matched his passion for this project; John Oates. Working together as ringleader and musical director, the two put together a cast of stars bigger than any Superjam before it.
If James and Oates had only managed to get the announced guests, this would have been a memorable Superjam. On a month long press blitz that just built in enthusiasm, Oates slowly revealed names signed to appear. Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters, Larry Graham from Sly & the Family Stone, Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and backup singers Bekka Bramlett and Wendy Moten were some of the names Oates seeded to the press, throwing so many out so fast, many believed there would be no surprises left come the night of the jam. They needn't have worried.
The first surprise came early in the set as Brittany Howard from The Alabama Shakes stopped by to jam out for over half the set, including a solo turn on the Rolling Stones hit "Satisfaction" that brought down the house. But Howard was far from the biggest surprise.
Already announced guest Larry Graham led the audience in a multi-song sing along of Sly & the Family Stone songs that built in popularity and intensity until the whole audience was screaming along to "Everyday People" along with the band.
From there, the surprises got huge. The first massive get for the Superjam was R. Kelly, who had just finished his own Late Night set on Which Stage. Kelly hit the stage to perform a spot on rendition of "Long Time Coming" by Sam Cooke.
But that wasn't even the end of the surprises. Not wanting to slight their other fellow Late Night performer, That Tent performer Billy Idol showed up to get the crowd into a frenzy with an energetic cover of T. Rex's "Bang a Gong." There is probably no person on The Farm this weekend more suitable to sing that song and Idol brought the thunder.
It was one of those rare moments when everything came together perfectly for 2 hours. In past years, some of Bonnaroo's Superjams have been criticized for just being two artist collaborations. This one lived up to the name "Superjam" as well as any could. With limited time to rehearse, a massive band to manage, and some of the most challenging music in rock history before them, every participant of the Superjam nailed his or her part. Jim James and John Oates pulled off a feat no one had any right to expect could go that well.
In addition to those already mentioned, other highlights of the night include a massive crowd sing of "Love Train", a festive rendition of Prince's "1999", and Otis Redding's "When Something's Wrong with My Baby."

Hey BH, the only thing that looks wrong on here is the last song. It was "I Want to Take You Higher" by Sly and the Family Stone, not "Take Me Higher" as you have here.

I think he may have based his list off the picture of the setlist from the previous page of this thread... You're right about the title, Jon.

Isn't "Don't Do It" a Marvin Gaye original? Obviously most famous from the opening of The Last Waltz but I thought Marvin wrote it? Either way, they definitely did the Levon version and it's fucking BAD ASS!
listen here - http://www.panicstream.net/vault/bonnaroo-superjam-2013-manchester-tn/ (http://www.panicstream.net/vault/bonnaroo-superjam-2013-manchester-tn/)
Nothing to be said other than what has already been said. This was the most fun I've had at a show in a long time. Possibly ever.
I had sky-high expectations, and they were exceeded. This was not a Superjam. This was a highly-rehearsed, PERFECT collaboration between dozens of supremely talented musicians. I am thankful to the Roo gods that this was taped and is available for my listening pleasure already.
I am so thankful they played "Love Train". I didn't even know that song, but hearing it brought me such happiness, and also led to the development of some sweet new dance moves I look forward to bringing with me everywhere I go.
Also, the "getting the crowd to keep the beat going during the encore break and coming back on stage before launching back into the same song" was one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of. Fucking loved this entire night!

One kind of funny tidbit about "Baby, Don't You Do It" is that on Friday on the same stage at Bonnaroo, Glen Hansard covered that song as well in his set. He introduced it as a Marvin Gaye song made famous by The Band.
I had never heard anyone cover that song ever and then I heard it twice in two days on the same stage.

O, this is EXACTLY the way I feel about the night with the exception that I'm very familiar with Love Train. I really was thrilled to hear Jim sing Use Me. I've always wanted to hear him sing that.
After listening to this recording about fifteen times now, I concur that "Use Me" OWNED! Good LORD Jim funked the shit outta that one.
I also urge everyone who hasn't downloaded this taping already to do so immediately -- one of the best audience tapings I've ever heard! What a magical night this was.
Yea, not only is it an amazing set but the recording quality is outstanding. I'd pay good money for it.

It sounds pretty damn close to sbd quality.
I'm curious to know what people think of this set who were not there but hear the recording. The surprises of the setlists and the guests were definitely a part of what made it great, but I think it holds up pretty well on tape.
I don't know though if that opinion is colored by having been there in person for it.
without reading through the thread, did jim and oats get most of the vocal time? and who is doing the star spangled banner
BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!!!
Through an amazing stroke of right place, right time, I ended up partying at the silent disco with Jim until 5am!!

Michael Winslow (Police Academy sound effects guy) does the Star Spangled Banner. And yes, Jim and John got most of the vocal time, with the exception of Zig on "Hey Pocky Way", Bilal, who I'm pretty sure takes a couple verses during 'Move On Up' and Larry Graham, who leads most of the Sly songs. Each guest also got a lead turn on their respective songs. However the backup vocalists also got a lot of non-guest vocal time, they're pretty easy to pick out.

WOW Roffers!!! That is super amazing.
I have been lucky enough to attend all of the Jacket Bonnaroo performances, and several other "epics", including most of the Louisville and New Years shows, but this one ranked right up there with any I have seen. The whole damn festival seemed really special this year (#8 for me), but that show was probably the icing on the cake for me. I saw one amazing show after the other, but years from now it will certainly be the SuperJam that stands the test of time in my mind.
The recording is top notch quality, but seriously does not do it justice. I feel so lucky to have been there for such a once-in-a-lifetime show. Thank you Jim & Co.
I cannot stop watching youtube clips of this shit. Absolutely amazing!

This is a great set, but listening to it (especially already knowinig the surprises) can't come close to the real thing. One example....I'm not a fan of Bang a Gong, but it would be easy to get wrapped up in it being there with Jim plaing guitar and getting an out of no where Billy Idol appearance. Great call on not reading that Oates interview for those who attended.
While I'm familiar with some of the other singers and I'm sure they are super talented, I much prefer when Jim sings. So for me the highlights were Use Me and Instant Karma far more than the others. I would have dug it even more if Jim had more leads.
The audio is great so thanks to whomever recorded. I'd like to check out some clips that walterfredo is referring to.

Hahaha that show was so much fun! Still giggling about it.
Obviously, to top ?uestlove & D'Angelo's superjam must have been a challenge - but Jim and gang clearly outdid themselves. Who do you guys think will head the superjam next year? I mean, this show is now legendary, right? You HAVE to atleast try to do better. You're not just going to let some wanker like...i dunno...Derek Truck lead the party. But who has those kind of skillz. That kind of diversity ?uest or Jim have?
Trey? Veder? Justin Vernon? Bring Les back? Wayne Coyne? Nah, Wayne would probably fuck it up. Haynes? Should they just have Umphrey's throw one of their all night all covers parties? Tweedy? maybe in the day time...Maybe do so British thing, like have Damon Alban do a British Invasion Super Jam?
Fuck...you're just not going to beat Jim James unless you give Trey the Which Stage at 12am and let him bring every musician at that festival on stage with him so they can reproduce a classic rock radio station....it just can't be done.
Wait. Nevermind. figured it out. Patton & Maynard. The Maynard James Keenan and Mike Patton Rock Your Fuckin' Socks Off Super Jam. That's it. Sign em up! :drum:
Serious thoughts though (or silly ones)? Who you guys think will be a viable option?
Here's Instant Karma, full HD, for your enjoyment... Episode One.
