Odds we get a New Year's Show this year? Or 3 night Portchester run in December again? I'm worried this Americanarama is all we are going to get now with Jim playing so many fricken shows this year.
Considering the presumption for 2013 was 0 MMJ shows, I don't see how to expect much more. Even if there is a New years Eve show, it could be in Louisville, L.A., Milwaukee, or Mexico City. I guess you are the first poster I have seen that is possibly complaining about Jim's solo shows?
Was there some article or a mention by one of the band members that they had a hold on that arena in Boston for a few New Years Eves because Phish had MSG reserved? I hope that's true and that a three night "warm up" run precedes it.
Phish has MSG reserved for NYE this year, I believe that's the final year of their contract. I don't think there was ever a mention that MMJ had agannis reserved for multiple years, and honestly I hope they don't...that venue was downright awful on so many levels. I don't see a MMJ NYE show happening this year, but if it does I'd be surprised to see a return to boston. I think the KFC YUM center in Louisville would make the most sense.

Yeah I agree that the venue was absolutely awful. Thank goodness I brought my own whiskey, because trying to get a beer there was awful. Everything about that venue sucked. The show was out of this world amazing though (par for the course with MMJ though). I don't care where it is, I just hope they do it.
They will need to test out stuff from the new album they are going to work in this summer/fall, so why not do a NYE show?
Not really complaining about the Jim shows. I was just hoping to get a real MMJ show and I feel like all his dates along with opening for Bob Dylan probably hindered those possibilities a bit.
If they do another PC run at the end of this year I would be a pig in shit.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder? Too much of a good thing? Those are 2 philosophies I embrace when forced to deal with things I have no control over. There is some real validity to both of them regarding gaps in touring for MMJ.( I know I will get shit for the second one.)

Move over and let me into some of that sh*t.
They should do 3-day runs at Port Chester between x-mas and New Years until the end of time.

I agree completely. Last year was a good year because I did several awesome runs that were spread out, but in 2011 I did so many in a couple months that I was jaded. It makes the "standard" shows a bore when I see them too often

There's something to be said for a break. Having a year where I do other things with my extra cash isn't a bad thing, but I would take a holiday trip to Port Chester any year they want to play a run of shows.
I thought maybe a Halloween show at KFC? Wishful thinking!

The quote came from Jim saying that Phish has MSG booked up for like the next 5 years so they were having to look at different venues up the east coast so their fans in Philly, NYC, and Boston would have sort of a central place to go...no multiple year NYE contract for MMJ...I think we will get something though
Well since they only seem to do a NYE show every 3 to 4 years I would doubt it. But I hope they prove me wrong and I hope it isn't in Boston again. I personally just didn't like the venue at all and it was way too cold to do much in Boston.
I would actually prefer a Jim solo show on NYE because it would probably be in a smaller venue.
Let me chime in on how awful the Boston NYE venue was. Please never play there again. Agannis arena had the slowest beer lines and they would only let you get one beer at a time, so you couldn't take one back for your buddy. Plus, they did a terrible job keeping people from coming into your section whose seats weren't there. Then you had really drunk people who kept crowding up all over you. Might as well have been GA for all the fighting and wresting we had to do to keep our spots.
I'd like to see the Midwest get some love for a new years show. Louisville would be super fun, and it would make sense to test a couple new tunes there.
yes. please no boston or aggannis ever again. NYC is about the only city that i can justify being in for a single jacket show when its that cold. Louisville would be awesome since I live here, but how about something Southern? NOLA would be the bees knees. Or, how about something like Panic en la Playa, and you just play at a resort in the Caribbean for 4 nights.
NOLA!
Ok obviously I'm biased but why not a Chicago NYE show. Huge MMJ following, great city for folks to visit and great venues to perform at (Chicago Theatre, Chicago Auditorium).

As I'll be a hell of a lot closer to Chicago than Boston or NYC, I approve this message!
Anyplace they want to do a NYE show is fine by me. Just make sure there's an annual Port Chester run preceding it.  I'd love for them to do an annual residency at The Cap similar to what the Allman's do with the Beacon every March. Doesn't have to be as many shows as the Allman's, but maybe add one more this year, and keep adding each year as demand increases.
As one of the many who were sick after the first night in PC but still powered through, I say we need a warm weather location for NYE or another 3 night run this year. Would love to see them in NOLA, Savannah, charleston even St. Augustene (sp) or some other place like that would be nice. With that said it doesn't matter as I'll be there anyway, but would love to be able to not freeze for a change while waiting in a long line.

Any idea if they intend to do a 3 night run there again this year eric? I feel like you've always had solid info on here. Patrick seemed pretty high on playing at the Cap immediately after so my intitial thought was that they would want to get back there ASAP.....but I am probably just being overly optimistic.

I don't remember anything about the month of January. I coughed and slept my way through it.

I really don't have any idea, just hoping. I have also heard they really enjoyed playing the Cap, so hopefully they do decide to make it an annual thing.

I'm just getting weak in my old age
While I agree warm weather would be badass, I had more fun at PC than I did at red rocks. I'd be happy to go back to the Cap. The small town thing was perfect for something like that.
The west got their special run at The Wiltern, I'm gonna count Red Rocks as midwest, and the northeast got Port Chester AND new years eve. It's time the south gets its new years show and/or three night run with no repeats.
I'm with Ewind. The Cap and Port Chester was perfect. I'd even go through another month of tuberculosis to go back.

While I still agree, Red Rocks is NOT the Midwest. I live in the Midwest/south and could drive to the southern tip of Florida quicker than I could red rocks.
Plus the south and the actual Midwest have gotten plenty of runs throughout the years. If it was south I'd want it to be really south... Like Nola. While the Ryman would be awesome, I love traveling to these destination shows. It makes it more appealing.

Definitely more of an adventure and yet familiar too. There's something fun about traveling all day to get to a show in a city you may never have been to before, yet when you get there you see your friends and your favorite band. It's more fun for me than just going on vacation the regular way.

If they do this, I suggest ACL Live in Austin or The Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans.
But I don't really see either happening.

Hold up kemosabe, we can do better than the Mahalia Jackson...
The Saenger Theatre in New Orleans re-opens this October and the objective of the renovation was to replicate the theatre when it first opened (early 20th century I believe). Considering MMJ's appreciation of older theatres, why not a NYE show at the Saenger?
At least I can dream...

Sorry, I had to include Red Rocks as the midwest for arguments sake. I can see the band doing a new years show in New Orleans rather than Nashville or similar. Mainly due to them always collaborating with Preservation Hall. I didn't become an MMJ fan until about September of 2010 so if they did any special shows in the south then I clearly missed out

20 miles east of Red Rocks is where Colorado is starts impersonating Kansas, so maybe in that respect the analogy isn't
that bad.
while i wasn't a fan of agganis either, it seemed pretty normal when compared to other shitty boston/ma venues like boa and mansfiled. same alcohol issues. same staff issues. different, but equally shitty sound. if they come back to boston they need to play at the wang.
regardless, i'd be shocked if they did back to back years of nye shows.

I agree, Fully. The beer lines were terrible, Agannis should be embarrassed that it took so long to get ONE SINGLE BEER. No exaggeration, I could have bought a beer, immediately got back in line, and by the time I would have been to the front of the line again I could have finished my beer. I didn't do this though, I nursed the thing. And yes, the sound was not the greatest, especially after seeing them in PC. All in all though the show was really, really fun for me. Too bad about that beer situation though.

Since I live in Austin I will agree wholeheartedly about this. Also, after just seeing Jim do his show at the new ACL Live (Moody Theater), I agree it would be an awesome and very intimate NYE show.
