Title: Easy Jacket???
Post by: TheBri-Man on Oct 09, 2007, 12:35 PM
I just started playing guitar about 2 months ago.  I have picked it up somewhat, but I was wondering what you guys think is the easiest jacket song to play on the guitar.  Or if you have any other easy, sweet, songs that I could learn.  Thanks.

Yeah, I've looked at that and it is awesome.  But, I still have trouble deciding which songs are in my range.  Any suggestions for a few starters?

At Dawn
Honest Man - fun to rock out on
Master Plan

Those are some of the simpler ones that come to mind.  My advice is to go for the song thats stuck in your head.  If you can hear it in your head before you play it - you'll get it down in no time.

Off the Record is fairly easy, and loads of fun to play.

I think every Jacket song is pretty easy to play. They use a lot of traditional chords. I guess I can only say that because when I started playing guitar I learned John Mayer's stuff and it's a lot more complicated. James can write though. Amazing.

easy doesn't necessarily mean simple.

Also a lot of the versions of the songs I have online are simplistic.  But you can make the more complicated.  Just because it says G doesn't mean you're strumming all six strings of the G the whole time.  There are also some more complex chord forms and licks they play that haven't been figured out yet.

You're right.
I'd love to have a TAB for "Where to Begin". It was on the unofficial page, but seemed incorrect. The tuning was odd. Love it.  :)

the chords are only a 1/4th of their songs, IMO.  The other 1/4th is a great rhythum section and the last 1/2 is gallons and gallons of soul.

where to begin was a tough one.  It is definitely in an alternate tuning.  I tried to avoid figuring it out but I got a LOT of requests for it and no one else seemed to want to take it on.  I did the best I could and I actually think that one is pretty close.

When I was teaching myself, I learned what a capo was. Get one, they are cheap and will help you play many great tunes.

I know it is a pretty slow song, but the first song I learned of theirs was "I will be there when you die."  It is a good one because it teaches you to go back and forth between G, Am, and C.  Once you get that lick, start on the Bear.  It is the same in the middle.  Someone once told me:

"there is an art to making a simple song sound like the best thing you ever heard."

Just remember you are not Jim and the boys and you will have fun playing them.
