Title: Who's going to the Memphis show!?
Post by: Lindlan on Jun 25, 2013, 11:19 AM
I havn't seen them play since New Years, then before that was night 2 of the 3 night stand in New York. Now I get to see them close to home! Beyond excited!

Are they going to let roll callers in first at this show?

Ps I am new to the forum, but I am on the portchester facebook page : Lindsay Dolan

Since this isn't a MMJ tour, they are not letting roll callers in first. We only were able to get pre-sale tickets for being roll callers.

Heck yeah! So excited for the show! I'm in the process of moving from Kansas back to TN and a few weeks ago Jim James came into my work. It was uh...it was a hell of a thing!

Looks like the weather will be really nice tomorrow as well!

Doesn't bode well for the Va Beach show (only show i get to see) if that's the case. I'm going to be happy in any case but would love a couple of deep cuts.

And I'm not going to any AmericanaramA shows, so I find it hard to get worked up about setlists like these.  This tour is beyond anyone's expectations and tonight's set is great.  I understand, after my three in a row in April 2010 (almost the exact same setlist for 3 consecutive shows), but still they were amazing shows.  Can't wait to see what's next, though I'm predicting The Bear and Easy Morning Rebel tomorrow night.

I'm with you even though I'm not at this show. They played 50% of the album at the Nashville show. I'd be enraged if it weren't for "War Begun" and "Masterplan" saving the day. WHY are they still promoting that album when it's over 2 years old?? I'd really like to see them tour where no song is expected (Victory Dance, One Big Holiday, Wordless, Im Amazed). Dig into Tennessee Fire to Ch.1 to Sweatbees etc. That would make it truly amazing!  I assume the problem would be with rehearsing such a vast catalog?

No they're trying to grab mass appeal, and circuital for whatever reason is the bands most popular album amongst people who barely know them. At least that's what I assume. But you think they could play more lowdown TWTHS and so forth, which are easily digestible songs for the less hardcore and still awesome for the diehard fans.

I definitely agree though with too much circuital. At least they are playing the better half of that album though.

Enraged? Dude, you got to hear two -TWO of your white whales at a short set which included two Dead songs played with a member of the Dead. You complain after every single show that you've gone to that something isn't to your satisfaction. They aren't coming to town to just play for you, dude. They are coming to promote themselves and make some money too. That doesn't happen if they don't play any of the songs the casual fan knows. You have to travel to event shows like Port Chester, The Wiltern, Red Rocks, One Big Holiday if you want sets for hardcore fans. Show the band some gratitude occasionally after you've watched them give you their all. This gets old. And if any of you doubt me, go back and look at 34's posts after the what -six shows he's gone to. He does this every time

Yeah, not really feeling these setlist complaints. A few months ago, I'd be thrilled to hear MMJ was even TOURING this summer! All these shows are bonus as far as I'm concerned. And the fact that we're getting some deep cuts and sit-ins mixed in for flavor -- SUPER bonus! This tour has actually reignited my Jacket fever and I haven't had a bout with this in a while! Therefore, no complaints from me whatsoever.

I understand greedy, unravelled. This tour has got me excited in a way I really wasn't expecting. At best I was hoping to get to hear my favorite band play short sets. The two shows I've seen though have put a burning desire for more in my heart. I can't name what is is specifically that makes me love these guys so much, although opening with The Dark for Scosbokonos was one of those moments that makes me get even more giddy about them. But really, the live shows....man, they could play Jimmy Crack Corn and make me beg for more. Watching Jim on War Began Sunday night was one of those moments. And they did play Comfortably Numb at sound check. Fingers are crossed, legs are crossed, and pants will be peed if we get it tomorrow night.

He isn't super upset; your response is a little harsh. He didn't necessarily say he was enraged, just that he would be if he hadn't gotten those two white whales.

I feel like its impossible to post an opinion on here anymore without some unnecessary forum hate. I just don't understand the need to freak out that much.

If people could just disagree and not hate, that'd be fantastic.

I for one never said it was a bad set, far from it. I only wondered why they played so many songs from one album on such a short set.

Show the band some gratitude occasionally after you've watched them give you their all. This gets old. And if any of you doubt me, go back and look at 34's posts after the what -six shows he's gone to. He does this every time

I for one never said it was a bad set, fear from it. I only wondered why they played so many songs from one album on such a short set.

Thank you EverythingChanges. Enraged was a bad word. Not what i meant. More like let down. Of course, i don't expect to hear Evelyn into By My Car into Strangulation, but what I'm saying is that out of my 7 shows, about 92% of the songs are the same each time. Maybe my expectations are a little high. As i go to more shows, I'll figure out more of what to expect. It was hypothesized that this tour was gonna be more towards the hardcore fans so i was anticipating more of Evil Urges and At Dawn that they usually don't play. I loved the show on Sunday. They band was rocking pretty hard even to the Circuital stuff. I was just expecting the promotion of that album to be done and the songs to constantly rotate again. That is all. No need for the hate  :undecided:.

So apparently Dylan's fired his lead guitarist Duke Robillard and Charlie Sexton is back playing with him now.

A friend just texted that to me. Interesting. I've followed Sexton for a long time during his Beats So Lonely period, but haven't really kept up with him as much lately.

34, I think if you would explain it the way you just did instead of seeing so much negative after each show it would make more sense why you follow the band and were so excited to get your picture made with Jim. No harm done. I just get very passionate about this band and supporting them.

I've seen wilco probably ten times and seeing them right after Mmj just shows how great the jacket is live. So much more energy, imo.

Did Wilco play anything out of the ordinary?

I haven't followed them much the last few years but they played new madrid, which was cool. Also a song of the third mermaid ave.

So I'm guessing John Prine only played with Jacket?

New Madrid?!?!? Would love that or any other UT songs, but as this is my favorite Jeff UT song, am wishing to hear this.

I understand being passionate. MMJ is the ONLY band/musician/performer that I MUST see whenever they get within a 150 mile radius. Since i discovered the band almost three years ago, the only show i missed was Beale St. and that was due to my sister's graduation. I just wanna see different songs, thats all. My ears are eager to hear more of their catalog in person. Anyways, back on topic to the Memphis show.

Uhh, so I checked this thread earlier and was surprised  to see such activity! Wish I could have met you Cameron. I almost felt like the only fan in Memphis on Carl's side rail.

Real time updates would've been rough, Seth, I had to represent.

The boys were tight and I was pleased with the setlist. Especially Phone....again...it doesn't get old. The John Prine surprise was quite a treat. And for the record, I never get tired of Circuital or really anything they decide to play. I love it all. I'm just stoked out of my head that they actually came to Memphis. I don't blame them at all for trying to embrace new fans with mass appeal. This town efffing needs it and they know how to do it. Some of the folks around me that weren't familiar were dumbfounded at times. They ended up loving it!

Props to the boys. Keep those vibes flowing....wherever you may be.

I heard about this at the show. And it made a difference. I think Dylan and his band sounded better tonight than Atlanta & Nashville.

The best comments:

"Dylan just unfriended Duke on Facebook."

And

"I didn't know artists of this caliber handled this thing like teenage girls."

Thanks for pointing me in that direction, Jonmayo.

can we all take a second here to remember that while bands are our PLEASURE, touring is their JOB. there is a reason MMJ & Wilco are on this tour with Dylan in venues each band respectively can (and has) headlined on their own. older fans of Dylan will go to "kiss the ring" and hopefully go buy the support band's recordings! if a new fan who was there just for Dylan went to his FYE or Amazon and tried to find O Is The One or PWW he/she may not find it and move on. if they hear songs from the LATEST RELEASE, even if its old to us mega-fans, its NEW TO THEM...and translates to a sale of some sort.

i hate to be Mr. Business, but you have to think about it like that sometimes. MMJ is playing 2nd out of 4 in rooms they have HEADLINED before. why? because they are getting exposure to new humans who they hope will join the team. touring is also a CYCLE. for every Port Chester or Wiltern there has to be 30+ Circuital dates.

regardless if this is the business of art, in the end of the day a successful band has to look at touring with a focus on the art of business.

I thought the best post on the dylan thread was "based on the reviews, Bob needs to worry more about his own performance, less about Duke's"

ps. it's fun to be back on the forum posting again.   been forever!

I think setlists and complaints from hardcore fans drive a band to get better and have their room in any discussion.  But for another side of the coin, I took a pair of Wilco fans to the Atlanta show and their house has been filled with MMJ's music since Saturday.

I prepped them for the show by playing OBH and Wordless Chorus which are really great, yet really accessible songs for a first timer. I'm glad they played both of those songs in our set.

This, to me, is awesome news! Charlie Sexton is a very good guitarist and he'll probably take the energy up a notch in Dylan's show, so I'm thrilled.  I am still over the moon about his 2007 solo album Cruel and Gentle Things, he's a great songwriter and singer as well.   I don't know that Beats So Lonely stuff, though.  Was that in the 80s?

That was recorded when he was 16. Definitely the 80's Shug.
