can anyone help a beginner out w/ some suggestions?   The tab web sites are all populated with the same tab that seems woefully inadequate.

 C            Fmaj7                     F
e[-------0-----------0------]       e[-5---5---5---5------------]
B[---------1-------1---1----]       B[--6---6---6---6-----------]
G[-----0-----0---2-------2--]       G[---5---5---5---5----------]
D[---2---------3------------]       D[--------------------------]
A[-3------------------------]       A[--------------------------]
E[--------------------------]       E[--------------------------]

this is right from ultimate-guitar.com all you need to do is listen to the song for timing. you got to play it fast though.

Yeah, the Ultimate Guitar version is obviously no too ultimate. It would work with this correction though:
e[--------0--------------0------]       e[-5---5---5---5------------]
B[---------1----------1---1----]       B[--6---6---6---6-----------]
G[-----0-----0-0(h)2-------2--]       G[---5---5---5---5----------]
D[---2--------------------------]       D[--------------------------]
A[-3----------------------------]       A[--------------------------]
E[-------------------------------]       E[--------------------------]

By "0(H)2" I mean that you should pick (pluck) the 0 and then hammer-on to 2. Now, I don't know how Jim plays it, but to me, it seems easier to base the riff around an A chord. Like so:

-------------------------------
---------2 --------------2-----
-------2-–2 ---------2---2---
-- --2 ------2-2(h)4------4--
-- 0 --------------------------
-------------------------------

> If you play it like this, you can just bar the second fret notes with your index finger and then use your ring finger to make the hammer-ons (and if you want to be in tune with Jim, put a capo on the third fret – chances are your singing won't be in tune with his either way though!). As for the rest of the song, it's just alternations between this riff and a D chord, with an occasional E thrown in (during passages like "You're onlyyyyyyyy gonna heeeeeear, what you waaaaaaaaaaant to hear ...").
