Title: OBH2 question
Post by: rockfordmmj on Oct 02, 2014, 12:32 PM
I'm about to book my flight and need a little help from those who went last year.  I can save $200 if I chose a flight that lands in Cancun at 6:30 on Saturday the 31st.  Is this too late?  I'd prefer not to miss any of the shows, and I refuse to miss any of MMJ.  The alternative is landing at 2ish.  Since there isn't a schedule yet, I'm unsure if I'd be cutting it too close.  Thanks!

Hmm, sounds a little tight to me. But you probably don't want my opinion, I won't even travel on the day of shows, for fear of delays.

I wouldn't risk it.

don't do it (don'tcha break my heart)

but seriously, any small delay could fuck up your entire first night - you need to assume 2-3 hours of time needed between landing and actually walking into your room.

I also think it's way too late.  Especially if you like the opening acts even a little.  Considering the cost of the whole thing, I don't think it's worth $200 to take the chance of missing some or all of MMJ.  Last year MMJ took the stage at 9:30 some nights and 10:00 others and it shouldn't take three hours to get to the resort from the airport.  But could go on earlier this year.

I'm concerned of snow or whatever arriving day of, and I land around 1:30.  I prefer to adhere to Crispy's itinerary, but can't make that happen a day early for this.  I'd rather relax and not have to rush around before the music starts.

i had no intention of doing the extra day, but your anxiety wore off on me and i got paranoid.

I'm right there with you crispy.  Especially coming from the west coast, to arrive day of would have been stressful.  We get into Cancun the day before.  Haven't figured out what we'll do quite yet, will probably stay somewhere in cancun and make it over the venue the morning of the first day.

We added a day in front, as well, at the resort.  Don't need the stress of travelling on the day of the first show.  This is all about a stress-free experience...  :bath:

don't know why I'm reading this thread- just to torture myself I guess....  but I will add that having an extra day this year was fantastic.   Certainly for all the stressful travel-related reasons, but also to just get there and get settled.   That pre-show night was quiet, the resort was only half-full, and it allowed us to have a more relaxing meal at the restaurant of our choice (you'll find some are way more popular than others).

APR - assume 1/2 hour to get off the plane and get luggage, perhaps another 1/2 hour to clear customs and get on the bus, then 1 hour drive and get to desk, perhaps an hour from desk to room.  We actually waited 3 hours for our room last year.  Imagine walking into the show late while your baggage is still at the desk???  A snow storm in January could throw this all off by an hour or 3 hours....No F-ing way.

Go early and stay late - worth it.

If your going with the expectation to get a concert poster, you'll probably want to arrive early too. If I remember correctly, posters went on sale at 5:00 pm day 1, and the line started forming earlier. I believe they sold out within an hour if not sooner.

The mid afternoon sound check on day 1 was a nice surprise too.

Definitely go early and stay late if you can. Waiting in line for a poster isn't bad when the staff continue to bring you drinks while you wait.

The soundcheck would be a great little bonus.

The posters were available several days into the event so it turned out waiting in line for them wasn't necessary.  Still..... the earlier the better.

My mistake I thought they sold out earlier.

word kinda spread at OBH1 that there might not be enough posters, so lots of people waited in line for a couple hours that afternoon.  Turned out to be unnecessary, but the cool part was seeing so many forum and FB OBH people in the same room during the daytime.  It was like a homecoming or reunion - total blast - especially with the drink service.

Hopefully they will order more from Justin Helton this year and perhaps have a 1 poster limit per person

I'd still wait in line - just to see folks

There should be a poster for each person sitting on their pillow. God knows we're paying enough for this trip. And really if needed, just add $40 to my total cost of the trip. I don't think it's right to have to stand in line once you're there and waste expensive vacation time.

I completely concur.  I'm an impatient SOB, and cannot stand to wait in any lines at all.  There's no chance I'll be waiting in line for a poster...and I'm a full-fledged poster geek.

 I need the poster, I'm going to count on not waiting in line and try to buy one on day 2

amen! i just saw pearl jam, and was planning on getting a t-shirt for myself and something for my date to give as an x-mas gift.  once i saw the merch lines, i knew that plan was out the window.   just don't have it in me to stand and wait that long, regardless of what i'm waiting for.

and i third the notion that OBH posters should be included in the all-inclusiveness.
