committed months ago to visiting my sister in Iowa those exact dates. Last MMJ Bay area show...some of our closest friends got married about 5 miles away from the Greek. This one hurts.

Switch the weekend of your visit unless it's based around something you can't switch.
Got the first two nights, one night on the floor and the second night two very strong balcony seats. Third was already gone on the presale, but I'll be hitting the general sale for the last. I was just at the Masonic over the weekend for another show. This will be an ace venue for MMJ.
Did anyone get the three night package thru roll call and if so, was it cheaper than getting three nights separately?

Thanks, Julie, we are planning on it, gonna get GA all three nights and early entry laminate for the sweet rail spot! Can't wait to get back to my beloved San Francisco, its been 5 years since we were last there for 6 nights of the Black Crowes at the Fillmore in 2010. Sounds like we are gonna have a big group of forum fans, looking forward to seeing you again!

The Treasure Island Music Festival just did a "Save The Date" for this year's festival. October 17th and 18th. I suppose MMJ could put in an appearance on the 18th, but that means they'd play for 6 straight days. I don't really see that happening. Interesting they're playing SF that same weekend, though.
tUnE-yArDs is on tour until September. Maybe Merrill Garbus will be a special guest at these shows?

If other shows on this tour are any indication, you should be able to pick Roll Call tickets up from the box office the day of the shows for a few hours before the doors open, but I doubt you would be able to pick up the tickets at an earlier date.

Yeah, that's what I assumed. When they did the three night run at the LA Wiltern in 2012 they would let you pick up tickets for the other two nights on night one, but you couldn't pick them up until the day of the first show.

In town for a wedding and gonna be able to fit in the Thursday show!
How is the venue?
How "bad" would last row of the Masonic be via Ticketmaster??
Looking for 2 tix to the 17th show and coming from MA so will probably pick up from TM or SH by late tonight so I don't get skunked - - unless someone comes thru..

I have no clue about those seats but I'd definitely bet that better seats will be released via TM at some point as it usually is for most venues. I would also bet that someone will end up having extra GA tix they would gladly sell for face.

I've only sat in the first two rows of the balcony, and they were great seats. With the balcony being only 11 rows, I'm sure the back would not be bad.
I'm pretty sure I have a friend who needs to unload a pair of tickets for 10/17 in the 6th or 7th row of the balcony, one of the dead center sections. If you are still in need and those sound good to you, let me know and I can set you guys up.

PM Sent. Thanks.
Man, it feels like these shows are never gonna get here. I feel like I'm stuck in a time void where these shows will always be months away.
In the last week I have gone from never seeing MMJ to buying tix to both Boston shows, then seeing them play an unannounced short set at NFF then an epic set backing Roger Waters and now have tix for all 3 shows in SF.
craziness. cant freakin wait!!!!!!
These shows are going to help me make it through the first grading period of school.
Potentially looking for GA tix for all three nights for just myself. I'm still looking at air fares at the moment, but the GAs are all sold out.

given the Stinson Beach recording location for Waterfall should we be expecting anything special for this venue?
maybe simply some extra mojo will be in the room those nights.
anyhow, my wife and I are going to stop for lunch in Stinson B on the way down from Sea Ranch. That house they stayed at up on Mt Tam has a heck of a view. Thought about renting it but already taken.
Dammit, they just announced Neil Young and Promise of the Real at the Greek on Saturday, October 17th.
Hello,
Unfortunately it is looking like I will not be able to attend these sure to be amazing shows.. So I am looking to sell my GA tickets. I have 1 GA ticket for all 3 nights and I am offering them for what I paid for them through TM. If any one is interested in them please PM me to discuss further details. Thanks for reading.

Impulsively decided I have to go to these three shows. Flying solo, have 1 great seat for the show on the 15th, looking for a single ticket for both the 16 and 17 shows. Preferably really good balcony seat or floor.
Man, San Fran accommodations are expensive when factoring the crappy Cdn $ exchange rate :(
Andbrown. I feel ya. My wife and I opted to grab a rental cottage off vrbo in Berkeley instead of paying big bucks for in city. Going to take the 20 minute BART ride into shows. I'm sure you will score some tix.

Be advised, BART trains stop around midnight, you may be pressed to make the last train.

Ahh, good intel. Thanks! Maybe Uber on the way home.
Uber is an option. I haven't taken uber over the bay bridge, but pre-uber days, a cab from anywhere in SF to anywhere in the east bay was a minimum of $50. Guess what I'm getting at is that you need to weigh your options and keep transportation in mind. Hotels in the City are indeed pricey, but sometimes the convenience is worth it. But, I'm a big fan of the east bay! For those looking for cheaper options in the east bay, do not overlook oakland! Historically, oakland has a bad rap with folks outside of the bay, but it's rapidly becoming one of the best parts of the bay. I love Oakland. So much to offer and the weather is a meeeeelion times better than it is just miles away over the bay bridge in SF. Amazing food options, so much more affordable. Did I mention the weather? The sun actually shines in the east bay.
Just posted this in the tickets section, but figured it wouldn't hurt to double up here in case folks don't migrate over there often. Thanks for any tips or leads!:
Hi all,
Looking for two floor tickets for the Saturday show at the Masonic in SF. These are for my two lovely friends who are big MMJ fans but who recently lost a baby they were due to have next month... otherwise they would have been all over tickets. Trying to help them out and get them to a much needed show! Thanks in advance!
We can no longer attend these shows. We have 2, 3-day passes (GA) for sale. More info in the tickets section. Really disappointed that we won't get to see the band this year (other than NFF), but that's life.

If anyone has pair of seats to sell for Saturday in more centered sections, please send me a PM.

Yay Walterfredo!!!!!!!
Live Nation just released more floors
Friday and Saturday for Mud and I
I'm selfishly hoping Thursday gets the rare deep tracks. My logic is it'll be the night where the audience is sparse, mostly the hardcores.
I contacted WU about early entry and got the expected response. Anyone heard anything about soundcheck/early entry etc. ?

absolutely. still floors available for thursday. Friday and saturday just really crappy balcony seats, and saturday seems very close to be sold out.
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, walterfredo, Thursday night shows during a multinight run including the weekend can be prime. I'm thinking its gonna be the best night of the three and hopefully not as packed as I hear that floor can be the way they sell it. First night of the Wiltern run in 2012 was my fave, too (although all three of those were weeknights)
or Thursday the 15th, Bob and I should arrive to our hotel around Noon. We are hoping to grab a trolley down to Cole Valley to our favorite cheese shop, Say Cheese. Our plan is to pack some cheese, wine and bread and head over to Golden Gate Park for a little picnic, hoping around 2-3. Let us know if you want us to pick you up along the way! Oh yea, and this is probably not for folks who are super concerned with rail status for the evening :)
APR - we can bring you some cheese in line if you like :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:
sounds like a good time!
We probably won't be rolling into the City until a couple hours prior, have to work on thursday. we'll most likely be meeting up with some fellow beer geeks at Cellarmaker or the Mikkeller bar. Both are fairly close to the venue.
Wish we could hit up all three, but will be happy to at least catch one night in SF with you crazies.
I too will not be on the rail! I lack the patience to sit there for 3 hours pre-show. we'll be toward the back of the floor wherever the space and sound is the best.

I think that's a safe prediction!
I won 2 tickets for October 16th. They are most likely comp'd tickets and I have no idea yet where they are located. I already have GA all 3 nights, so I propose this....if someone would like them, all I ask is a trade: a gig poster and T-shirt from the merch table for the pair. Anyone interested - PM me. I'll post this in the ticket's forum as well. - *EDIT* Tix are spoken for! YAY! <3

Just to get you all frothing at the mouth thinking about the three shows we are about to receive, here's a reminder of what they do in a three night run on this tour! No repeats, if I'm not mistaken, and the new songs evenly spaced out at three to four a night and plenty of good old rarities every night!

Night 2: Circuital +
Night 3: The Waterfall +
You can delete the #2 entry from this Roll Call list, as finances will be preventing Sarah and I from attending. I will be posting this in the ticket thread, as well, but if anyone is searching for a pair of 3-night pit passes, shoot me a PM.
Going to the Thursday show! In town for a wedding and ecstatic that we'll be able to fit it in, just wish we were going to all three!
Went to the 2 Minneapolis shows and the fellas were on point, especially N2, one of the best shows I've ever been to!
Here's my wish list of tunes I've yet to hear live:

I'll be in the pit Thursday night. It'll be my first time seeing them since 2012 so its long overdue. I'll also be flying solo because I'm new to the area and my roommate isn't into spending the money on a ticket for a band he barely knows, so if anyone is looking to add a member to their crew, hit me up!

Hey TDB - Thanks for the interest but I just sold the extra ticket I had to someone else. One good thing about balcony seats is no waiting in line, so if there is a group of folks meeting for pre-show drinks that don't have to rush off to claim a spot on the rail, I'm keen to join.
Gonna three epic shows I'm sure!

Awesome Andrew! You can also check out the memberpics page on other topics, so that you may recognize some of us!! That was kind of how we used to recognize each other in the sea of faces, before all of the social media takeover. That, and nametags. Cheers!
out of curiosity, I just searched for tix to each of the 3 shows and was surprised by the results. Floor tix available for all 3 and and first 3 rows of straight away balcony all 3 nights. Row 1 section 6 on Friday!!!!!
Any idea what time mmj will go on tomorrow?
Curfew is 11:00 Thursday, 11:30 Friday & Saturday. I would think 8:30ish first night and 9:00ish the next 2

Oh well, guess I'll have to suffer with the VIP box seats we got.
Sounds like they are overselling the floor as this venue has a reputation for. :( Hope its not too crazy crowded.
Are they still doing that thing where Roll Call members get in early?

Hmm...something's not right here...
I see a lot of seasoned Jacket fans listed for this show and would love some input on early entry etiquette. I've got a buddy coming into town who has his ticket in hand. I did Roll Call pre sale and therefore need to pick up my ticket at the box office which apparently opens up at the same time we line up for early entry. I also like posters. Especially posters of shows I am attending. I have a scenario in my head where I pick up my ticket, get in line, enter the Masonic, purchase a poster and then casually stroll down to the floor with my buddy and find a spot on the rail in front of Carl and commence having a wonderful evening amidst a group of people who have a special connection with my Favorite band. Are these ridiculous expectations? It's gonna be a great three days regardless but would love some thoughts on this...

Sounds logical. It only depends on how many early entry folks there are, because most will be doing the same thing. I'd have your buddy secure the rail while you get the poster. You have 15 minutes before the rest come in. As close to fool proof as possible. Get in the Roll Call line as soon as you can.
That's good to hear, thanks for the response.
Wow, those are certainly different.... Thanks for posting those
I like them, and would take them in a heartbeat over the Chicago set.
Enjoy the shows everyone, I'm sure they're going to be epic!
FYI, sounds like these images were not supposed to be posted yet. GB has asked that they be removed. I contacted JY and Count.

Man. I really want them to release this 3 night stand just based on night 1.
Heck of a sweet looking setlist!
25 tunes with Slow added and nothing cut. You gotta love that! Anyone know what time they hit the stage and show ended? I'm thinking that show must've been pushing 2.5 hours.
I think it was on about 8:50 done just after 11, but I could be off on the end time. Although large number of songs, the first 7 or so were acoustic quickies.
Amazing show. Wish I could make the next two. Of the five I saw the bookends were definitely the best, night 1 Seattle and last night.
Thanks Walter.
I saw that but thought maybe they stretched a couple of those out. Interesting start to the show for sure, and I like that kind of change up.
Saw Bruce in Philly a couple of years ago and he audibled the start of his show to 5-6 in a row off of Darkness On The Edge Of Town. That type of thing is right up my alley.
Sounds like our guys are going Spontaneous indeed. Especially on multi night runs.
Getting even more excited for The Beacon run now.

I was thinking the same thing watching the show. I honestly don't know how they top last night. The interesting thing about the set list...nothing from Evil Urges.
What a cool looking setlist. It's so great that they continue to evolve and do things their own special way.
I went to both Milwaukee shows, and then Portland and Seattle 1, and each was so different but similarly amazing and inspiring and reflective and beautiful.
Then they go and do something like last night - what appears to be a lovely little change of pace.
Such a joy to be experiencing this band at their prime. Enjoy the next 2 all you out there in SF!
this band has never not been in their prime! they prime time

That's easily one of the top Jacket setlists that I've ever laid eyes on.

Holy shitchrist.....best band in the fucking world doing what they do best, giving San Francisco everything they got
An incredible, wildly eclectic show. The full band version of Quick Like A Flash was significantly better than the studio Basement Tapes version. It's THEIR song now. Great to hear Old Sept Blues, never expected that. Killed it on Black Metal. Hey, they killed it for 2:15. Show started at 8:45 and ended at 11 straight up. Heading back tonight for more surprises.
Oh yeah, Carl's Carried Away. Sweet with Jim on the choruses.

Love the Fruit Bats! First saw them in 2010. I saw Fruit Bats play at The Echo in Los Angeles the night after the MMJ Shrine show and it was so awesome. There were maybe a couple hundred people there and they played for 90 minutes. Such a treat. Look forward to that Halloween show! When they played the Echo, they even played some new songs from their upcoming release. I'm sure you'll get osme of that if they are doing another small headline show in your area.
Anyone know when the last picture of you was played before last night?

We got Picture of You on the last 3 night stand in LA. It was GLORIOUS!
They played a rushed, kinda like they hadn't played it in a while version of it in LA 2012.
They also played a WAY more relaxed, pretty, way it should be version at OBH I.
NO comparison between the 2.
OBH I version was magic!
Just on guys opinion (who just happens to be right ),

Hey mahgeetah,
Any Fruit Bats setlist info would be much appreciated again. I think you're the only FBats fan there :)
Does anyone know if the Masonic sells tickets at the door?
I can't get over the setlist... It is absolutely killing me. Now, i know they will get more agressive for fri and sat shows, this is similar to how they dealt w the chicago run as night one was much more mellow.. However, it was nothing like sf night one. Unbelievable. Just pure beauty.
Here is my single prediction: How do you know WILL be played tonight or tomorrow night. Its perfect for SF.
Any update on the setlist?
I've got a few extra GA FLOOR seats for saturday night I'm looking to unload. Well below face. $45/ticket. Hard Ticketmaster tix. Floor is what you want. gives you the bracelet which allows all access to floor and balcony. Balcony was the place to be last night. Best MMJ set I've ever seen. Glorious is putting it mildly.
Also, anyone with a poster from Thursday please contact me if you want to sell.
I can't wait to see the setlist, but the happy for y'all, isn't close to the jelous as hell yet :)

To Know Nobody(?) - with Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats
They probably did the Fruit Bats song called Wild Honey? "To Know Nobody" is a pretty dominant lyric in that song.
Yep.
Fruit Bats song
-Wild Honey
Jim has covered this solo before
Fuckin huge TREAT. Super jelous.
Beautiful song
Jim has done this with Ben Sollee, & Daniel Martin Moore, before.
-This song is performed by Fruit Bats and appears on the album Tripper (2011).
Pick your shadow up, slender on the vine
Green wind will lift you, under sky blue tongues
Someday your chariot of air will vanish from
this world of wine and bone
And then what remains of you is pure and genuine
as wild honey
Free of form and desire, there before the naked eye to know nobody
To know nobody
No body
Each empire who inherits the sea, rises and retreats into foam
In the ash there stirs a seed, empty between
what's unseen and unknown
To penetrate pure light, penetrate pure light, you gotta suffer some
And then what remains of you is pure
and genuine as wild honey
Free of form and desire, there before the naked eye to own nobody
To owe nobody
No body
No body
No body
To know nobody
Nobody
To owe nobody
No body
Thanks for the Intel. It was a real nice duet, they sounded great together. Was not familiar with Fruit Bats before this run but have enjoyed there opening sets the last 2 nights. One more to go...
Carl was on fire tonight. I saw him look down at his hand after Easy Morning Rebel and it was shaking. He really enjoys playing that song. And I can see why, it kicks ass live!
Kind of a different experience tonight. The crowd was bigger and louder and more obnoxious. Friday night brings out the first class d-bags, it seems.
The show sounded a whole lot louder than Thursday night, too. Did anyone else feel that way or do I need to adjust my earplugs?
So happy to hear Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You, which did not feature the omnichord. Was ecstatic when they followed it up with War Begun and I Will Sing You Songs.
Nothing To It and State of the Art sound fantastic with the full band, but I kinda wish I could hear more MMJ tracks.
Can't wait to hear what tomorrow brings.
great show last night!
Spot on review from buymycar IMO. Lot of great possibilities for tonight. Let's do it again
Fruit Bats played (I think) the exact same setlist as Thursday. Tony The Tripper, Ruminant Band, Unusual Friend, new song (w/ banjo), Love Somebody closer... 2 or 3 others. Played 35 minutes. Sound was a little more dialed in than Thursday. I'll try to make a stronger mental note tonight of their songs (before I get blasted for MMJ).
And Wild Honey was amazing...
just got a chance to listen to the first 10 songs from night 1... WOW!!
what a strange and awesome feeling that must have been to be in the audience and get so many mellow songs right off of the bat. beautifully and expertly performed, it really seemed to be a new level for them in terms of building and performing such a unique and harmonious set of songs, especially At Dawn through Like a River. Speaking of Like a River..
They FINALLY did it justice live. Maybe this was the hardest song for them to translate from the studio but i felt like in previous renditions the ending got a little short-changed. Not this time. While it wasn't quite the wailing, shrieking ending of the album version, it still felt explosive and transcendent.
I'm thinking now that New York could get a more laid back set like that as well, the odds are good. 4 nights, lots of time to fill, and sentimental holiday stuff in the air. I would miss two thanksgivings to go back in time and be able to attend Night 1 of SF.
..and now one of the coolest Dondantes i've heard in a while.
..and... what a HELL OF A JOB on that recording!
Jim's guitar on Dondante is crystal clear

Agree. Loved all three shows, but the first was magical
I may have already said this but with all three in the books.. night 1 was the most unique, profound MMJ show I've ever witnessed. Truly magical in such a unique and blissful sort of way. That show will be one of legend.
I'd like to give a coherent review of night 3, but my brain melted sometime during Steam Engine. I will say that Big Decisions is in the doghouse, as that was the only Waterfall tune they didn't play over the 3 nights. Maybe it strains Jim's voice like Remnants? I'll take Hillside Song in trade, though. That was pretty sweet.
I'll agree with the sentiment...night 1 followed by night 3 followed by night 2.

Carl was unreal. And yes my ears were ringing all night after the show!
My son was at night 3. He's in the army, currently in Monterey and saturday was the only night he could get off post. Meanwhile, I was in KY staying way up past my bedtime awaiting his pics, texts, and social media updates. He got what would have been my dream setlist. So jealous.
After listening to the full recording of Night 1, I can firmly say that that was a LEGENDARY performance. Let's take a look at the first 7 songs:
1. At Dawn
2. Bermuda Highway
3. Get the Point
4. Golden
5. Like a River
6. A New Life
That's bold. That's EXTREMELY bold. You have a band that has a reputation for high energy, explosive shows playing a 3 night run in a major market, and they come out with 5 acoustic songs in a row followed by a song that the band has only played one other time together. I couldn't help but think that this may have been a tip of the cap to groups like CSNY with all of that plucking going on. But it's so much more than just being unique or rare, or that the songs were mostly acoustic. There is an emotional depth here that you don't always reach with some of the more high energy songs and a theme of triumph and transcendence that finally peaks and explodes during A New Life. Then, Circuital (a song that I generally tolerate more than enjoy) becomes the PERFECT bridge to what will be a more upbeat leg of the setlist. I've never heard Circuital like that before.
Other things that make this show just so absolutely amazing:
1. The crowd: I've never heard a crowd THAT QUIET for Dondante before.. ever. Either that was some wonderful work by the guy that did the recording, or that was THE MOST respectful crowd I have ever witnessed. You could have heard a pin drop when Jim went into his first set of hushed improvs. It was as if they hung on every note, just as I always attempt to do with a level of success that is sometimes negatively influenced by those around me. Also, the crowd's song recognition for the rarest tracks really impressed me. Many seemed to know Old September Blues, Picture of You, and Carried Away after only a couple of notes. And speaking of Carried Away...
2. How beautiful was that? How powerful was that?! It's always so great to see Carl get some of the spotlight after all that he does (and he really does do A LOT) to supplement was Jim is doing. When he does get it, he doesn't disappoint and he does it his way.
3. just in terms of rarity alone: At Dawn, Bermuda Highway, Get the Point, Like a River, A New Life, XMas Curtain, Old Sep Blues, Picture of You, They Ran, Lowdown, Quick Like a Flash, O is the One, Knot, Slow, Down on the Bottom, Carried Away.. ALL IN ONE SET!! That's practically a full set of songs that have some element of rarity to them. (i know the two tracks from the Waterfall aren't SUPER rare but they are not commonly played like the others from the album). I've long thought about devising a ranking system based on frequency of live renditions so that we can get a quick number for how rare overall a setlist is. I think i've seen something similar with other bands like Dave or Pearl Jam. If we did have that system, I think this would be the hands down winner for overall rarity (if we are talking about MMJ, Jim, and Carl originals and not including covers).
..alright. I think that's enough. I'm on a high right now that I never thought I could achieve without actually being at the show. I see a pattern though.. finally... if you look at Chicago Night 1, it's not really like SF night 1, but the rarity factor, and the mellow factor, is most definitely there. I think when they have shows on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday nights, especially when it's a 3 nght run and they know they have to save their heavy hitters for the nights when more people will show up, you will get shows a bit more like SF Night 1.. but i don't want to take away from what was surely a night for the ages. My only hope, after this, is that the band now realizes that they can go even further outside of the formula and people will still have an amazing time. It's my one wish, that they continue to experiment and evolve their live setting to the point where some day you will truly not know what to expect when you go to a Jacket show. Time will tell.
^^^ Excellent summary Stevie. It was all that and more.

Someone on the forum must have this already??
I thought night 2 was the heads-down Rock-the-hell-out best show of the run by a large margin. I like my MMJ rockin' and that made night 2 stand out but I also felt the band was tight, focused, confident and effortlessly took control in laying down the rock. I felt the crowd was on the same wavelength of musical telepathy as the band and all that made the night a symbiotic feeding frenzy of the finest kind! We all have our different fave styles and songs from Jacket and its damn amazing they can do three consecutive shows so different from one another and so high quality too, but night 2, for me, was a near-perfect example of why MMJ is the best live band in the world right now
What a great run of shows. I feel very fortunate to have seen this band at this stage of there career do a 3 night stand in that venue. Beautifully constructed setlists, fantastic sound. Had a different vantage point each night and enjoyed them all. It's a great time to be a live music fan. So many solid live acts playing in nice venues with My Morning Jacket at the top of my favorites list. I feel like I'm a bit older than the majority of the fan base and I was worried I might become the jaded "all the best music already happened" type of guy who sucks the life out of music conversations. MMJ have revived me and this run proved that the best is yet to come....

The San Francisco 3 day run...?
Which did you prefer, purely musically, sonically,
Actual shows not just the setlist...?
Again...Just curious. Not baiting or trying to
Ruffle any feathers.

So how long has Carl been playing sax on Steam Engine?

I'm sure there are others but I know he was at both runs, and will have a good take on them. Especially since I'm betting he was up close and center in SF too.

We all have our different fave styles and songs from Jacket and its damn amazing they can do three consecutive shows so different from one another and so high quality too, but night 2, for me, was a near-perfect example of why MMJ is the best live band in the world right now
Nice review Shug. I like how you gave your opinion, stated some points to back it up, the end.
Well, Thanks, Eric. You know those shows in which it seems like the whole room, band and fans are just in it together, the band crescendos and the crowd immediately responds? It was like that on night 2. They came out so hard and determined to kill it on The Dark. I had three first timers with me and they were smiling and rocking out amazed from the very beginning of the show all the way through. Looking out over the crowd from the second rail of the floor, seeing big sections of the crowd fist pumping during Off The Record was great!
On night 3, while there was a lot of strong rock coming from the stage, I didn't see as much connected responsiveness from the crowd when the band hit a big crescendo. I was thinking, "why isn't everyone freaking out right now, these guys are killing it" and it seemed like more than half the crowd didn't really notice.
Sometimes the intangible but very obvious vibe makes the show, like on night 2.
Hell yeah Shug. Whether it's these guys, the Dead, Bruce, whoever, there are some nights where it all comes together like that and it's just a great thing to be a part of. The reason why we all go to shows and what keeps us coming back show after show.
It's definitely one of those things where there's no shot of knowing just seeing a setlist. I've seen shows by bands where the setlist might not have looked all that great but it had that "it" factor you're talking about and some where there's an amazing setlist that just didn't have "it".
I'm thrilled for you, and those there who got to experience that night 2 magic.
Here's my very high-level synopsis of the run:
Night 1: Most interesting show
Night 2: Most rocking show
Night 3: Most spectacular show

I'm glad you felt that vibe at night 2. I wish I could say the same, but the people around me left me feeling very uneasy. There was a dangerous element in the crowd that night that fed my anxiety. I guess it could have just been me.
But you're right that the band was in balls to the wall rockin' mode. I've already expressed how awesome Carl was that night. I just think that the intensity of the music also fed my anxiety that the people around me were capable of anything.
It kills me that I Will Be There When You Die was on the written set list but not played. The encore felt too short, but I know they were up against curfew.
For night 3, I decided to hang back near the soundboard and had a much better time.

Sounds like quite the trifecta!
Will you and Flake be making any of the East Cost shows?
Yeah, I think where you are in the venue also has a huge impact on how you perceive a show. If you are all the way up front, you don't get as much sense of what the whole crowd behind you is doing. Being in the middle of the crush on the floor can be uncomfortable and it was very crowded down there. All three nights we were on the second rail left of the soundboard so we had clear sound and perfect sightlines as we were standing a head taller than everyone in front of us. They even have a little shelf to put your drink. Best spot in the house, IMO. I probably would've had a way different experience in other spots. All that rocking out looks great when you are watching it from just above. We had enough room to rock out ourselves, too, cause we are not ones to stand around with our hands in our damn pockets when a rock 'n' roll band is killing it up there!!! :drum:

I think that must be it, I had plenty of room to breathe on night 1, but with more people on the floor for night 2, I didn't have enough personal space to feel comfortable. It was that crowded for night 3, too, but at least I was at the back near an exit. And the rail behind me felt nice to lean up against after 3 nights of standing.
Oh yeah I was gonna say that there were a few kinds of microphones on stage recording audio. I did not see any video cameras. Wonder if they are going to release the audio of these shows?

I sure hope so, but they do record every show they play. I'm sure that the cable they ran from their tour bus into the Masonic and that they were protecting from being stepped on had everything to do with that.
Hi guys, it's been a little while! My wife and I went to the Saturday show at the Masonic. We used to live 4 blocks from the venue, but that was the first time either of us had ever been in the building. I love that area up near the crest of Nob Hill...the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins, Grace Cathedral, the Pacific Union Club and Huntington Park...and a My Morning Jacket show!
The first few songs of Night 3 seemed kind of 'business as usual', at least from a song selection point of view. It had been 3 years since I'd seen them play though, and they sounded great, so I was lovin it all. I was really happy to hear both of the slower songs mid-set – Hillside Song and Where to Begin. Both sounded really nice, though the room was a little rowdy to fully appreciate them. From Thin Line through the end of the show though, the band kept stirring things up masterfully, building the energy in the crowd. Oh! Sweet Nuthin was about as big and brilliant a performance as I could ever hope for at a rock show. It was absolutely fantastic, and we still got 30+ minutes of energy added into the building after that.
For about the final hour and a half of the show there wasn't any let-up, and we just kept drawing aces. I Think I'm Going to Hell, Oh! Sweet Nuthin, Run Thru...I don't know that you can close out a set much better than that. Really, REALLY fun show (actually our whole day down there was perfect). Thanks again, My Morning Jacket.
Good to see you again, bbill!
What to say. We all know how great MMJ is live, but they keep managing to exceed expectations. I couldn't believe how many tunes they broke out night 1 that I hadn't heard in a long, long time. They must be working hard practicing the Basement Tapes and JJ solo tunes because those were all awesome. Quick Like a Flash and AEIOU flat out rocked.
I was with Shug and a few other Forum members on that great spot night one just above the main floor (I assuming your son was back safely at the hotel after night 2 or the good vibes you describe above would have soured big time). Even the view of Patrick and Bo were amazing from there. Night 2 I was in the same spot on the other side of the venue. Night 3 I was in the balcony, and being up there was equally great. It almost doesn't matter where you are in a place like the Masonic and most venues MMJ play these days. It's incredible regardless.
I agree that being farther back and seeing the crowd go nuts adds to the fun. And being with fellow MMJ fans during and pre show also adds to the fun. I brought a friend who had never heard the band to night 3. She was completely blown away.
Masterplan was extended more than I've ever heard. The Steam and Dondante endings with Carl on sax were both terrific versions. Picture of You was nice and long and rocking like it was at OBH 1. Oh Seet Nuthin had a sick jam which I'm looking forward to hearing again when audio pops up.
Nice to meet you, APR! Glad you guys decided to hang out with us at least one night before you defected to other spots, ha ha ha!
Man, wasn't there some great stuff every single night? Masterplan and Going To Hell and Run Thru on night 3, Slow Slow Tune, Carried Away, O Is The One>Wonderful Man on night 1. But I think our son would have dug night 2 the best, high energy rocking and all that. Hard to predict which show is gonna be the best one for someone's taste, but if anything, he would dig the rock.
Bbill, sorry we didn't get to meet up, another time hopefully. Glad you finally got to another Jacket show. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next one!

I agree! I have to say, even as a noob of sorts in these parts, there were songs that I have NEVER heard live on night 1 - then night 2 was rocking - but night 3 seemed magical--->The guys seemed pump, having a great time. Even the Fruit Bats were having a blast. This really felt like OBH1 (without the relaxation) in terms of sets, vibe, and friends.
The only thing that I didn't care for was the crushing from the house during encore. Someone mentioned that they could see the waves in the crowd as people were pushing forward. I actually felt bad for the petite woman behind me getting crushed.
I would say Night 1 was the best set list, possibly of any Jacket show I've been to. Just lots of good surprises and you did not know what was coming next. And them adding in Slow Slow Tune was awesome and fit perfectly. The fact Jim played an acoustic and did not touch an electric until song 7 was pretty cool. Plus getting Carried Away!! That is the one song I really wanted and got it the first night.
Night 2 was a lot more energy than night 1 and more rockin! They even scratched I Will Be There because they knew it would kill the energy that had built up. I hate seeing a song scratched but in this case it was the right thing. Really fun electric show that kept everyone moving.
Night 3 was just a classic MMJ set. Seemed to mix up all their catalog really well and blend all the albums together plus we got Hillside Song and Where to Begin back to back, I'd take that any night of the week!
All 3 nights were perfect and had great crowds, lots of energy and I got to stand on the rail the same spot all 3 nights. When I looked to my right, left or in the back you could see fantastic people that we've met through the years and this tour. It's been a blast, and was sadly our last shows of the year!
But I can't wait to do it all again, again, again, again!!!
Jeff Clark..
