I was at the LA show tonight and Jim definitely isn't his old self. Serious lack of rocking and movement. Remember the days when he slid across the stage on his knees during wordless? Now I know it wasn't a big stage tonight and maybe things will change when they are on tour. But his back just can't be right. Victory dance just lacked tonight. Feel better Jim, we need ya. Was still and awesome show.
I was thinking the same thing. Shit, he used to do flips during Golden. But yeah, maybe it was just the setting....I really hope his back is getting better. I'm sure he wants to rock it hard this tour.
He hasn't felt good since he fell off stage in 08 or 09 or whatever. He still brings it.
Honestly, I just hope he takes care of himself. If he sat in a chair a la Houser, i'd be ok with it. Just want him to find a way to keep playing without being in pain.
Well, its strange. No one noticed any of this during obh2 right? So maybe he reinjured it? I really hope for his sake that hes getting the care he needs. Everything else is secondary.
i dont know if this is a new thing or not but on the Ellen performance it looks like he is standing on a pad. looks like one of the things chefs use for standing for long periods of time.
Well wait a second.... During the earth day celebration he went strutting out onto the catwalk and did his thing quite effectively. If this is whats happening then he had to have reinjured it very recently.

I think he is pacing himself in these early performances, so he isn't drained and so he doesn't re-injure himself before getting deep into a relentless touring schedule with show after show coming up.
This is what I'm hoping he's doing too - taking care of himself so things don't get worse!
Yeah I'd rather him heal than thrash around for my benefit. Plus, I close my eyes for 3/4 of the show anyway. Maybe the pad is some sort of posture correction thing to reduce the stress of standing on a hard stage. Like a cushion of some sort
lets not forget it was a live broadcast so you gotta play the right notes
and they were still figuring the songs out, which are pretty demanding to play
We all love Jim for his rocking out but at least he absolutely crushed the vocals last night.
I just watched the Ellen performance. Band sounds really good!
But Jim looks to be in pain and not too happy after performance. And he never just stands in 1 place..
Hope he feels better.
They've got a verrrrrrryyy long world tour coming up, with dates still to be announced. I'm sure there is a lot of preventative care being applied right now to ensure longevity.
Definitely something to watch as 4-5 shows a week and life on a bus just HAS to be brutal on any back injury.
All the best JJ!
My Morning Jacket's Jim James: "Touring has wrecked my health"

My Morning Jacket's Jim James answers your questions in the new issue of Uncut, dated June 2015 and out now.
As well as discussing snorkeling with the Grateful Dead and performing with Bob Dylan, the singer, guitarist and songwriter tackles the subject of touring and the damage it's caused him.
"The physical beating your body takes when you're on tour can be pretty extreme," James says. "That, and isolation from people at home that you love. But we're lucky we all get along really well and we're super supportive, and the show itself is super fun.
"But the brutality of that constant travel, it's really wrecked my health in a lot of ways. There's some injury I've sustained from every portion of touring!"
My Morning Jacket's seventh album The Waterfall has just been released.
The new issue of Uncut is also out now

We don't want to hurt you jim! I would have been fine with them taking off more time and begin touring after the 2nd album is released. Its tough watching someone like Dylan whose voice and body have been shot for years. Hope Jim can have longevity.
Today at the signing in LA Jim was standing while everyone else was seated. Very weird.
Yep... Shit.

I agree. They played the whole album. Ten new songs in a row just perfect playing without a hitch. Jim said it was like giving birth so they must still be getting used to it.

I think it was the recent Rolling Stone article in which he described reinjuring his back during The Waterfall sessions.
A mutual friend of his and mine told me that they we're considering calling off the west coast tour and some non-fest east dates because of his back. So yeah he's not pacing himself, he's in pain.
I assume that since they officially announced the west coast dates he decided he could pull it off.
e_wind delivering some rough news.
I just watched the performance on Fallon, and JJ was moving around a lot more and a lot better than the live stream. He sounded awesome during both broadcasts. I hope the Athens and Knoxville folks give us an update after those shows.
I kind of thought that maybe he was wearing a back brace because he looks a little fuller around the waist as if he might be wearing one. I thought that also because of his new loser fitting psychedelic jacket.
Jim's health (and the rest of the boys) is priority #1.
Feel better and be happy JIM
It seems some on this board want any and all topics of Jims health to die off. I personally think they're not really reading what Jims been saying...im taking it seriously until he says its not as bad as he said but until then im keeping fingers crossed , good vibrations and karma to Jim and the other guys.
I broke my back in 2009 and had 4 vertebra fused. I can tell you that having back pain is about the worst kind of pain imaginable. I hope he takes it easy. Even if he sat in a chair like BB King, they'd still be the best live band out there today.
Staying positive; I'd like to think they wouldn't be offering all these dates up (Las Vegas packages, etc.) if there was a big issue, knowing people are paying to travel on these trips. Of course, anything can happen so hoping JJ just chills on the mic and sings his ass off into the beautiful universe. Carl can take care of the dance moves this go-round.

I have been having similar thoughts lately.. that there was a reason for the big coat. His posture did seem unusually upright at OBH and i noticed it at the time but didn't think much of it.
When I saw his mounted flying V on his solo tour, I wondered if perhaps it was to give his back a rest...
I watched CF and Spring from last Thursday. I think he looks fine.

If by fine you mean he didn't move a muscle the entire show and didn't sit down at the in-store the next day, then yes. I suppose he is fine.

I didn't say he was 100%, but people are jumping to some far fetched conclusions on here.
Fingers crossed that we're just jumping to conclusions... Hope Jim is healthy and feeling well!
I thought he looked weak and moved like an old man in Athens. Though, he sounded great!
while he isn't moving around the stage like he has in the past, he didn't seem to be that bad in the Hangout webcast

He didn't even move his foot in time with the music at KCRW show. He was so much better in Athens & Knoxville it was great to see. Definitely no running around or sliding on his knees. No crazy head rubbing with Carl but he did walk over at one point and lay his head on Carl's shoulder. :)
I think we should expect slightly shorter shows than in the past. And they will be amazing!

No one is jumping to conclusions nor is any of this far fetched. This is how shit works when you injury yourself. You take it easy.
At hangout he looked reserved. Not saying good or bad. Just like he was stiff. I mean the Victory Dance was epic but he was not as mobile as he used to be.
There could be a couple of things at play? He could be hurting or he could be recovering and taking it slow. I think the latter maybe? One of the posts above is right, they have a BUSY two years ahead, especially with another album. Hell their ambitions are sky high right now. Especially with an extensive tour going across the US and Europe within 7 months. Makes sense if he understood that to accomplish the next two years, he HAS to take it easy on these shows...which are amazing regardless.
Idk, I just hope he gets better
My theory is that if he can't move around a lot he's still going to need an outlet for his boundless energy and enthusiasm.. at Knoxville it seemed like he channeled that into his vocals big time. What a show.
Jim is addicted to cats...hes losing it...he looks aghast with the fever of a cat obsesse
