Title: Come Closer Anniversary
Post by: amskinz on Aug 12, 2015, 09:15 AM
Just wanted to pass along that today marks three years since I was lucky enough to catch one of their best performances to date, in my opinion at least. I have made a promise to myself to never miss another show at the LC Pavilion in Columbus. I've been nothing short of blown away the last three times they've played there. The drive from Buffalo is a small price to pay to see gems like Come Closer.  It was also followed by a killer Carried Away for all the Carl fanatics like myself. I was lucky enough to get a set list as well to make my trip complete. All in all, just another perfect night with the Jacket.
P.S. Band of Horses opening on that tour was just about the best choice ever!

I know for years now I've been requesting "Come Closer" to be played. I have to imagine it is one of the songs that Jim fell out of love with. I too am curious how the song sounded live back in Columbus, real shame there are no tapes of that show.

He must have had to seriously. I remember Tom and Pat both quoted somewhere as saying there were songs Jim and to an extent the guys "banished to the doghouse". I can't understand why songs like Come Closer or How Could I Know and How Do You Know have been banished.  Those three right there are enveloped in mystery and  have such a force behind them.  I could see the new influx of fans at these recent shows being bitchy about slower / Moody / challenging material like the aforementioned but fuck that.  The fans who pay good money for albums tickets etc want to hear those.

I completely doubt that we're in the minority of Jacket fans ...I feel most who've been around the block have a thirst for neglected tracks..why do they think fans follow them around so much?

Yeah I agree, I know the word is a song like "Remnants" is tough on Jim's voice so that is why they don't play that live but damn there are some older songs that I'm sure a lot of us would love to see back in the rotation:

1. Come Closer
2. Picture of You
3. Weeks Go By Like Days
4. Oxen
5. Chills
6. Death is the Easy Way
7. Into the Woods
8. How Do You Know
9. I Needed it Most

I think I'm resigned to the fact that I need to be at the next Terminal Style Shows!

i gotta couple more to add to your list, CHIMMJFAN:

1. COBRA: MORE SPECIFICALLY, FROM 19 MINUTES TO THE END (the "why do my toes always feel so cold?" part.....a breathtaking, magical musical moment in my life)

2. SWEETHEART (the Gypsy Tea Room 2006 version, with Carl on electric, was amazing and seriously brings the big question of why this has only been played a shocking ONE TIME live...maybe just a question of too many amazing songs, too little time)

I am not joking I just got done listening to Sweetheart, lol.
So here is my official haven't seen live songs:
1. Get the point
2. I cant wait
3. Two Halves
4. Into the Woods
5. One in the Same
6. Death is the Easy Way
7. Just Because I Do
8. If it smashed Down
9. I Needed it Most
10. Hopefully
11. If All Else Fails
12. Picture of You
13. By My Car
14. Butch Cassidy
15. Weeks Go By Like Days
16. Can you see the hard helmet on my head
17. Sweetheart
18. Chills
19. Lil Billy
20. Come Closer
21. How Do You Know
22. Friends Again
23. Tyrone
24. Welcome Home
25. Oxen
26. Dear Wife
27. El Caporal
28. Ready to be Called On

Now some I'm not sure if they have ever been performed live (Dear Wife, El Caporal, Ready to be Called On)...but other I missed as I started going to live MMJ shows in 2006 and I missed a few that I was out of town for when they came through Chicago.

holy shit! if those are the only ones you havent seen man then you have me destroyed!! ive only been to 1 Jacket show! and would roundly take anything they play as long as I get to see them, and Chicago has gotten some special special shows. That Blackhawks chant gave me chills on the bootleg hahah and Im not a Chicago fan whatsoever although I dig D Rose.

Sweetheart is majestic both the one off live and the studio and its heaven that we even have 2 choices for a song like that, i mean holy shit what were the odds that song would be played only once during their touring years AND be recorded by one taper at one show? very fuckin slim

Dood CHIMMJFAN, you're fuckin cool

Do you laugh your ass off in joyous cackles when Jim lets out his reckless abandon scream at the aphex of the Run Thru bass fuzz / Patrick dancing jam? Cause I DO TOO and Its why we love this band

Thanks man! Yeah I still feel like a newbie to MMJ compared to others on the board and I've been a fan since 2006, with soon to be 20 shows attended. I love that moment when a rarity pops up in the set!

Yeah Run Thru gets me everytime!

The Blackhawks chant was definitely a cool moment, MMJ always shows Chicago so much love!

I almost get jealous of those who have only been to a few shows because there is so much more greatness to experience in their sets which is going to be new and raw for you!

Dood thanks bro! I just have only seen them ONE time out of a possible 4! I tried to get into The Depot 2007 show with a Fake ID (I was just barely 17 at the time) and the bouncer graciously booted me out, saying he didn't wanna embarrass me but I had to leave. Hearing them come out to Phil Collins' Take Me Home with the crowd going crazy and then them opening with the hi-hats of OBH made me teary eyed and I got in my car and left, it was too much to take. Then a bootleg comes outta the sky for THAT SHOW like only a few months later and it felt like a sign, like this band won't let you miss out.

I've been a fan since 2004 but really missed the ball on the 2005 In The Venue show, it was all ages and I was obsessed with MMJ at the time, but did NOT have a good grasp of tour dates and upcoming events and how to know about them at that time. That show changed all of that for me, as I became obsessed not miss one. I saw the 2012 Twilight show, and it blew my mind: 2 hours 25 minutes of Maximum rock and roll but it felt like a  3 hour show, just the insanity they poured into every song: I got a 10 minute War Begun, 11 minute Phone Went West (the epic Red Rocks jamming one), Evelyn's Not Real, and a few other awesome songs (well they were ALL awesome) and I felt so privileged just to see this ONCE  I then missed the 2013 Americanarama as I felt really disturbed about missing the National that night (who would most likely never come again To SLC and hadnt before 2013 in their whole career) for a cock-tease of an MMJ set and a too small Wilco set (id seen Wilco in 2004 in Salt Lake with my father) as well as Bob Dylan (who i'd seen in 2008). Luckily, MMJ only played two songs they didnt in 2012: Heartbreakin Man and Smokin From Shootin. So I didnt miss much, but it was a Jacket set and Jim also came out to do Tomorrow Never Knows with Wilco....so I guess I did...but it made the pain of too many choices easier.

I WILL NEVER MISS ANOTHER MMJ SHOW...NEVER

Dood I've done my homework on the bootlegs, listening and listening and listening, loving every whim the band decides to destroy the fans with. Its awe-inspiring how a band can maintain this level for so long. We are lucky to have a life with My Morning Jacket around, man. Just think about it, one day they might be gone.

BRING ON "COME CLOSER" AT RED ROCKS!!!

That is on my list as well. It seems to me it's relegated to sound checks only. I don't understand why. I noticed during the SC tour of 2012 that it was being played during sound checks but not shows.

ahhhh Just One Thing gives me chills! I love that song!!! Lets hope that turns into a mellow section opener at Red Rocks, wouldn't that be sick? Don't the guys know after playing How Do You Know that they got our minds all buzzing with ideas??? Crazy, but AMAZING ideas too, ideas that would work on stage

why do they play certain things for soundchecks but not in the show? i dont understand that....Chills is a beautiful song and deserves a couple plugs away at it a tour. nearly every song in their catalog is flawless and we're lucky they've explored a huge portion of it. I think this Friday night is gonna be an insane one for us Jacket fans!!!!!

Unfortunately, I'm a drummer, so I can't remember what Jim actually played. Sorry. But it was indeed heavier and longer than the original! We can all hope it doesn't end up being a once in a lifetime experience. Oxen is definitely at the top of my list for the future too!
Magical things seem to happen every so often through the power of this board, so let's all pool our positive energy together for tomorrow's show. Hopefully this stream leads to more in the future (maybe future OBH's???).

Friday is going to be nuts.  I'd bet that there will be a rare song or an interesting cover with the lead singer of Sylvan Esso.

They soundchecked Chills at MPP while we were all waiting outside getting checked in for the fan club soundcheck.  These rare songs would be great to hear not for the novelty factor..... but because they are flawless... Come Closer, Weeks Go By Like Days, Just One Thing.

Who knows why they only play Just One Thing at soundchecks, but I'm glad they played it at one I attended.  I too love that song and after 30 shows that was my first time hearing it.  I'm waiting for some incredible personal firsts (Rollin Back....PLEASE!!), but it doesn't make or break a show if songs like that are included.

Perhaps keeping a few songs for only soundchecks is a way of making those experiences more special.  They're already intimate affairs, populated by huge fans who'd appreciate the rare track or two.

I didn't even know They were doing soundchecks that you could come to until ...like ...this year!  And it sounds like an amazing experience . It does cause a but of confusion as far as songs played / not played as stuff like Chills hasn't been done since 2010 but they've done it recently a few times at least.  But I guess that's what asterisks are for

found a ton of really interesting looking videos on youtube of the Terminal 5 run!!!! Ive found How Do You Know and How Could I Know, a version where the audience is annoyingly talking over Jim

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aeuDfAbd3k

there's nearly every song filmed by someone in the crowd!! how did nobody film Come Closer???
