Title: Making A MMJ Live (official / soundboard audio sources) for a newbie
Post by: Lonndown27 on Aug 27, 2015, 04:30 PM
I sit next to this really really cool Mormon kid at work, he's about my age which is 25, and he seems terribly confused with his life. He's already been married at divorced (Mormons marry way early, as they can't have sex before marriage) and had his mind messed withbig time by that relationship. I have be-friended him and he has come to realize how obsessed I am with this band.

He's absolutely interested, and he listens to everything from, in his own words "alternative, stuff like Smashing Pumpkins, to soft rock". He doesn't seem to be the most musically versed, especially when it comes to specific bands, eras, albums, etc. but he is VERY interested by the fact that I've called MMJ "the greatest live band to ever grace a stage" and that their live act was better than any album they could ever make (and I made sure he knew all of their albums were priceless too, just a different vibe). He wants me to prove it, and so I'm compiling a first timer's gateway to the magic of MMJ

I REALLY REALLY wanna get this right, any suggestions?? I really want him to become a huge fan and listen to the lyrics, I think they'd bring him peace, love and understanding, things he desperately needs in his life.

My playlist so far (sequenced to be like a mind-blowing newbie's first show):
AT DAWN (RR2012)
WORDLESS CHORUS (OKONOKOS)
VICTORY DANCE  (RR2015)
MAHGEETAH (CHICAGO 2015)
CIRCUITAL (OBH2015)
EVIL URGES (OBH2015)
OFF THE RECORD (OBH2014)
THE WAY THAT HE SINGS (RR2012)
IT BEATS 4 U     (RR2012)
GIDEON     (OBH2015)
LAY LOW   (CHICAGO 2015)
IM AMAZED  (RR2015)
DOWN ON THE BOTTOM (OBH2015)
I WILL SING YOU SONGS  (OKONOKOS)
THE BEAR   (RR2012)
SOONER    (OKONOKOS)
TONITE I WANT 2  CELEBRATE W/ U  (RR2012)
GOLDEN     (RR2012)
THEY RAN   (RR2012)
DONDANTE   (CELEBRACION DE LA CIUDAD NATAL)
ROCKET MAN   (OBH 2014)
COBRA              (RR2012)
STEAM ENGINE   (RR2012)
PHONE WENT WEST   (RR2012)
ONE BIG HOLIDAY    (RR2015)

thats my preliminary list, and its in order

ANY suggestions?

you're missing some Port Chester goodness.  I just posted War Begun in Live Jam post.

And if you're throwing covers in there, Tyrone is a must as is Carl's Carried Away (another Port Chester gem)

and honestly, what I've heard of OBH15 is not that good.

I LOVE watching those videos especially Where To Begin and Cobra! I totally would buy them if I didn't just use the allotted money I could for the 20 dollar Jacket Red Rocks show and stream and buying Agganis Arena too . But I understand Mr White it IS best to purchase and support the band. I just unfortunately can't right now :( not expecting a handout or anything

I mean, Okonokos and now Red Rocks 2015 sorta feels like a great starting point for a newb to me. It's basically all the staples, and flawless versions of them.

I totally agree! just wanted to include a few more other songs instead of some of the choices from RR2015. i REALLY wanted to include it with the intro into At Dawn from RR2012 night 2, its the most epic fucking opener I feel, and I wanted it to hit him like a ton of bricks.

Im still figuring out how to do this, but first I need some burnable discs so I can take care of this and BEFORE THAT, Mr. Seeker's care package!!! DONT WORRY SEEKER, I'M CLOSE!!!!

I would buy him a copy of the Okonokos DVD and then just stand back and watch.

You are such a good friend! I'd recommend including Strangulation from Okonokos. Your friend sounds like he's been through some ish in his young life and that song starts out dark but ends with hope. <3

I've already given him RR2015 RR2012 both nights and Okonokos and hes absolutely loving Circuital At Dawn The Way That He Sings Touch Me Pt II and surprisingly for a first time listen hes absolutely embraced Rollin Back to the point of singing a line or two perfectly ! He loved the opener Rollin from RR2012 .Off the Record and Evil Urges Wordless Lay Low hes all loved. Songs he hasn't gotten into yet are It Beats 4 U I dunno why and Victory Dance for some reason he hated and Shockingly and to my frustration COBRA!! I think hes not a funky person but once he latches onto the sound he'll understand.

He saw eye to eye with nearly every softer Jacket anthem like The Bear Bermuda Highway Sooner Golden Wonderful and They Ran.  Musically he doesn't understand Move On Up or It Makes No Difference Oh Sweet Nuthin etc they might all just be Jacket songs to him
