Title: Top 5 MMJ Concerts Of All-time
Post by: IStillMove on Oct 25, 2015, 02:52 PM
Long-time lurker coming out with a question for the experts.

I'm a fan who is just now digging into the band's extensive concert recordings archives. The volume of high quality bootlegs (official and otherwise) is an overwhelming and glorious embarrassment of riches. From the early years to the Bo & Carl glory days continuing through today, it is hard for the average fan to zero I'm on the must-have, can't-miss shows. For the sake of this discussion, let's leave out Okonokos because that is an official release on a completely different level.

If you could only listen to 5 My Morning Jacket concerts the rest of your life, then which 5 recordings would you chose?

(If this has been covered before in another thread, then I apologize and would appreciate it if someone could point me to it. I did several searches and was surprised that this topic hadn't already been covered in some detail)

Here are my choices (in no particular order) based on what I've heard so far:

1. 2015 Atlanta Night #1 (cannot get enough of this mind-blowing Dondante)

2. 2006 SF Fillmore NYE

3. 2006 Bonnaroo

4. 2011 Oakland

5. 2012-12-27 Port Chester

Wow Great thread! Jesus! This is gonna be hard , but if they were 5 that I could've been to and now could listen to all the time, but were the only ones, it'd have to be:

- Bonnaroo 2008

- Bonnaroo 2006

- Columbus 2012

- Red Rocks 8/3/2012

- Capitol Theater 12/27/2012

Been to 4 mmj shows, (all this year, got deep into em QUICK) and my 2nd was ATL night 1, with the 1st being nashville the night before. I feel extremely lucky to have seen that as essentially my 1st show

I'd love to sit here and nit pick for hours on end about this topic, but I think you're pretty spot on here. I was lucky enough to be at 'Roo '08 and Columbus in 2012, which are easily one and two to me. Your other choices are stellar. I'm sure there are better shows to many people. Everyone has their own reasons for what is considered a magical show. That's part of the magic of this beautiful band. They connect so many different people on so many different levels for so many different reasons. If I could be selfish and put another show I was at on here it'd be Lewiston,NY from this summer. The 2015 shows have really been something special I think. The sky is truly the limit with MMJ!

I like the way you think John.  It definitely does seem that way every time I leave a show too. They just continue to amaze me.

It would be too hard for me to list my top 5 as it seems like it's ever changing.

The whole T5 run would be up there though, and T5 night 1 was one of my greatest concert nights ever. I can still hear the absolute quiet and attention to every song from the audience that was so noticeable it has stuck with me til this day. I'd love to someday have  a recording of that show.

The PC run is up there too as are a few MPP shows. Chicago was no slouch either but I'm gonna hold my picks til after the Beacon run. I've got a feeling they're gonna be on the T5/PC level.

I was at Bonnaroo 2006 and anybody who says that wasn't their best show is... Not me, because they played that show for me.

thanks bro! hell yeah, the Lewiston show is definitely one of the best from this year!

and Johnny hahah, your response was perfect too because I left 10/07/2015 feeling the greatest feeling id ever felt befo....just magic....the same feeling I had after 8/2/2012...just magic...awe-inspiring music that sends chills and tremors to the brain (good ones).

EVERYBODYS suggestions are valid because EVERY SHOW they've done is amazing and light years better than whats out there right now, with everyone like Band of Horses, Dr Dog, etc all trying to catch up. Even Wilco and Pearl Jam could learn a thing or fifteen from these boys and the crew.

BEST CREW IN THE WORLD

BEST SOUNDMIXER IN THE WORLD

BEST GUITAR AND DRUM TECHS

and of course

BEST BAND IN THE ENTIRE WORLD

id submit also:

12/31/2006-1/1/2007 @ Fillmore (hilarious, epic, groovy and just straight up awesome)

8/4/2012 Red Rocks was a night full of magic and insanity, dig that version of They Ran thats damn near definitive

Wiltern in 2012 had three monstrous shows

Ogden Theater 2007 is amazing! opens with that beautiful It Beats 4 U intro into Beats

The Vegas shows from 2015 were among the best ive heard! such beautiful tapings by Alex and such amazing sound by Ryan...just incredible the way Jim haunts us all at the end of a 7 1/2 minute Golden, the boot stomping version of Easy Morning Rebel that makes me feel Carl's hand shaking at the end (like someone mentioned they'd seen...this image will not leave my mind as its so badass)

KFC Yum 2010 was unbelievable with the pageantry and 3 hours of musical bliss accentuated by the horns (see Move On Up and Evil Urges)

under the radar shows that MUST be heard:

- SLC 8/2/2012

- Oakland 2011

- Waterfront Park 2008

- Prom Nights @ 40 Watt 2007

- Bonnaroo 2005 has a blistering Tonight Ill Be Staying Here With You and Just One Thing

- ANY show @ The Gypsy Tea Room

I saw at least two tapers at this show. It's a real shame it hasn't surfaced. Such a magical night. I was lucky enough to sit next to Ryan at the board and get his set list. There aren't many Jacket shows where you get what's probably the most sought after song, and a drum solo to close the show. Another thread has given me hope we'll hear the next best thing to this show, the whole T5 run. That would help me get through life a little longer waiting for Columbus to come out of hiding.

Night 3 Port Chester was the best concert I've ever been to in my life.

Amen. I am not sure I could have ever asked for a better run of songs than Lay Low, Anytime, War, IWSYS, Honest Man.

that Night 3's Honest Man is the best goddamn Honest Man i've ever heard.
best shows of each touring year since 2003 (i need to listen to more 2000-2002 stuff):

2003: Headliners shows
2004: Bonnaroo, it has to be...just such a huge moment for the band and breathtaking performances (but theres a lot of great shows this year)

2005: Philly 6/05, ridiculous setlist and performances, everything they were capable of Okonokos era
2006: 12/31-1/1 Fillmore, just too much fun to be contained
2007: Prom Nights @ 40 Watt ATL
2008: Bonnaroo's epic all nighter, but Red Rocks, Waterfront, Nashvegas and Radio City are all important from this time and must listen shows
2009: Metro Sydney, wish they'd release the full show, it has a majestic setlist
2010: Terminal 5 run, although 2010 was a year full of Jacket Weirdness like the KFC Yum show, the Voodoo Festival in New Orleans with that weird intro, etc and beyond and a lot of interesting shows this year

2011: Oakland bar none the best show of the tour.
2012: probably my favorite year of MMJ's touring career, its so consistent and bone-chillingly epic. the best would have to be the Capitol Theater run but my god, this year was an "off year" compared to 2011 but it has way better shows, WIltern 3x, Red Rocks x2 with everyone getting a visual document of night two and audio downloads of both nights and Cap shows, Columbus's one night stand of 25 majestic song selections, my first show in SLC 8/2/2012, Agganis Arena NYE, Mann Center Philly...so many classic shows

2013: CBGB Festival in Times Square NYC
2014: OBH night one (but all 3 are divine)
2015: the best would have to be a tie between Red Rocks, Atlanta, Chicago 6/10 (wish we had 6/9), Vegas and the Masonic shows. I need to hear Austin TX, but im sure the Beacon run will be #1 when it goes down. something tells me that's gonna be the best Xmas present of all

For me it would be these 4 shows that I saw.

My First:  Fillmore 06 12/29/06 amazing and instantly hooked
RCMH 08, see above
MPP 12, maybe my alltime favorite 5 song run and the cobra/runthru/cobra was awesome
CP3, a great end to my personal favorite multi-night run

I see a lot of love for the 2008 RCMH show and I can't disagree.  It was my first, and you never forget your first (especially if it is damn good).  Didn't hurt that I was in the first row which was a total fluke, but that's another story.  This is also my first MMJ video, a bit crude but I think it captures the mood, and from that point forward TWTHS was forever my favorite live MMJ song.  Just ask NN  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE9stnDyVMU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE9stnDyVMU)

2008 Festival Pier in Philly was, for some reason, maybe the remnants of a hurricane barreling up the coast, a magical night.  I haven't heard a better PWW than this but I'm sure others may beg to differ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGZqj-2K4RY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGZqj-2K4RY)  crank it.

Hard to top T5 or Port Chester - amazing runs.
Does it get any better than this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4fnIMor4Lg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4fnIMor4Lg)

Then there's the MPP shows.

Oh and, of course, NYE in Madison Square Garden.

Is that five yet?  Every MMJ show that I've seen has been amazing.  All special in their own way.  Looking forward to many more.  Next up, Boston and Beacon.  Can't wait.

That was my first show, too. I really had no clue at the time how rare some of the songs they played that night were. I didn't hear some of those songs live again until the first night of this year's trifecta in San Francisco. SF night 1 this year really took me back to my first show, especially the way they started slow. I went into that first show only knowing Z, so I was expecting a rockin' show but quickly realized this band had much more depth to them and that I had a whole lot more to discover.

I had just started getting into MMJ earlier that year after reading an article on them and then watching the ACL and then went out and got Z and Okonokos the next day.  Then we were looking for a place to spend NYE as a short second honeymoon since our first was just a long weekend due to work and we saw MMJ was playing SF and so was SCI so we decided to do it and was totally blown away.  I just remember the chilling feeling of Jim starting out solo, then the guys hit their groove, and the fantastic ending with Bermuda Highway, was simply perfect.  Made the next night at SCI much less enjoyable as it wasn't even comparable.

I haven't been at every one but I've seen a lot of live music period and I would say that the Capitol Theater run was 3 of the best shows I've ever seen of anyone period.  There was just some kind of magic in the air and planets were aligned or something.
Red Rocks 12 was pretty epic too
the Chicago Theater run this year was incredible and very special
Boston New Years 12 was sic
And though I wasn't there personally, the Masonic shows keep coming up among peers as being exceptional...

It doesn't even look that crowded up front at that Radio City 2008 show.  I didn't see Jacket until 2011  even though someone tried to turn me on to them with Z in 2005 or 2006.  I was a fucking idiot for not listening to Z longer, the electronic and synthetic beats of the first two songs didn't do it for me and I stopped listening.  I had been waiting for them to come around live when I lived in Memphis 2001-2005 but they never came through when I was around.  I'm so pissed at myself for not seeing them live sooner, but I have to accept that it just wasn't in the cards for me.  Its pretty strange to go back to the first few pages of The Shows forum and see who was around here in the early years and read their stories (like MMJ opening for Wilco in 2005 and that show at the Palace in Louisville when they did a joint encore of Don't Fear The Reaper or the Roxy LA shows that Cameron Crowe attended and some fan was chatting with him or reading when Patrick used to post messages. I love hearing the stories of the early days, but it also bums me out to be reminded of what I missed out on.  I wish had been around with you guys 10 years ago seeing shows in Austin or San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Jim - "I thought that was you up here Crispy"!

Ahh, the one and only time I ended up happy that I wasn't on the floor.

I was at that Radio City show and remember Jim walking up the side of the hall but couldn't remember the song. Anyone know?

It was Steam Engine. And it was awesome.

Of course it was! Even looking at that I knew it wasn't some cover or something not worthy of that moment.  It HAD to ba an epic tune.

Can't wait.

It doesn't even look that crowded up front at that Radio City 2008 show.

There was no GA pit at the Radio City show, it was all seated and I was lucky enough to snag first row over on the left side.
