According to this article, the rumors are true.
QuoteOh and get this, Ray's new backing band is essentially My Morning Jacket minus Jim James. Not too shabby!
http://mainetoday.com/blog/face-the-music/ray-lamontage-at-thompons-point-in-portland-on-june-16-on-sale-march-4/
Would make some sense with Jim producing Ray's record. This would give the band steady work all summer and also gives Jim some time off to heal up. Could we maybe see some MMJ festival dates sprinkled in too?

Pretty full schedule
If true, Carl will be showing off his pedal steel skills big time.
I'm assume Jim played something on the album. Does anyone know if any other MMJ'ers play on it as well? I haven't been able to find much out about it as far as recording personnel.
Regardless, this will be a great show to see.
oistheone, will you be making the trip to CMAC? Such a beautiful venue!
The album musicians are Jim's solo tour band less Alana who is now in sts9 ... Kevin, Dave, Dan ... Maybe it's them seems very unlikely the rest of mmj could commit to a tour of that length considering last year and 2017 commitments.

Thanks for that huge piece of info timescaper. Makes perfect sense that the album musicians would be the touring band in this case. Jim will be finishing up his solo album and prolly wouldn't need any of them at that point. It's also easy to see (but unfortunate) how the writer could make that mistake, saying it's MMJ instead of Jim's solo band.
If anyone has any concrete evidence of who exactly is the touring band, though most likely Jim's band, it'd be much appreciated just for piece of mind. I wouldn't want to miss out on a presale with the chance of seeing almost all the boys
I see a Seth Kaufmann on there too. Wowza. It reminds me of what Kurt Vonnegut says about jazz...that it is "safe sex of the highest order". Each musician on that list is not only vastly sonically aware, but also experimental. Not to mention the kind of intuitive repertoire they've built from playing together for so long. They're making Louisville the underground Motown.
For what it's worth, when Newport Folk announced Ray as their first act, some guy on Facebook commented "It'll be really interesting if the rumors about MMJ (sans Jim) backing him on this tour are true...".... and they liked it. They liked zero of the 140 other comments on that post.
The speculation continues...
It would make perfect sense if it was everyone but Jim- that would give him time to work on his solo album and/or write more Jacket songs, possibly to be recorded in the fall and released early 2017??
as much as I think it would be cool it was the guys backing, I just can't see it. Jim's band definitely.
amskins is on the same thought process I am.
Um Jim James...air raid siren!? Can't wait
Anyone know the the live nation presale code for the RL shows? Tix go on sale tomorrow with the Amazon info.
Going to Newport for the first time this year so this would be a huge cherry on top

I saw that as well. I'm sure he plays a mean air raid siren!
Yup, I ended up doing the pre order too to get the code. Then within 24 hours after watching a few live videos and realizing the Boston date that we are going to sit it out also. Truthfully, the live videos didn't seem to capture the essence of his soulful music. Either way, I will see him play at Newport Folk Fest in July and enjoy his new album release on vinyl when it gets here.
So, I have an extra presale code if anyone wants me to PM it to them.

I'll PM ya. We saw him on his last tour and it seemed much different than stuff I had seen online so I expect to see something different this time around as well considering the disparate sounds/styles on these 2 most recent albums.
Might be nothing, but the guys are dodging questions about this. Feel like if there was nothing to it, they'd deny. The rumor mill churns on...
I was planning on seeing him this tour anyways. If the MMJ sans Jim is his backing band, all the better!!!
confirmed that mmj is the backing band!
Singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne will soon embark on a 45-city tour in support of Ouroboros, a new studio album due March 4. LaMontagne has revealed that he will be backed by members of My Morning Jacket on the upcoming tour.
Here's the full statement from Ray LaMontagne:
"I am very pleased to announce that the band for the upcoming "Ouroboros" Summer Tour will be Tommy Blankenship, Carl Broemel, Bo Koster, and Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket.
We've been throwing this idea around for quite a few years now, and the stars have finally aligned. There has been such positive spiritual energy flowing throughout this entire project. From that first restless nights sleep when the album made itself clear to me, to the recording of the Album at La La Land Studio with Jim, to getting a call out of the blue ten months later that the Jacket boys wanted to back it up on the road.
There is some serious mojo surrounding this record and I think it's going to be a very, very special run of shows"
Ray LaMontagne and the members of My Morning Jacket begin the tour at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati on June 10. The tour is currently slated to run through late September. Ouroboros was produced by Ray and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Stream the LP's first single, "Hey, No Pressure":

It looks like they are unique codes. Amazon sent the code between ordering and canceling though. Sadly whatever presale tickets that are left for Boston are not great.

Arcs on this tour?
On certain dates! I know they're playing in Canandaigua together, as well as a festival a bit north of Toronto to be announced tomorrow. Ray's already on the Newport bill and I expect the Arcs to be added as well. I wouldn't be shocked if Jim showed up at Newport either!
Just got 2 for the Louisville show!!
The Palace is the coolest and I know that will sell out, so I really appreciate the presale code I got from a kind stranger here!
Shocked at the price, and took right section on the floor halfway back, but this is a can't miss show for me.

I will be on vacation when the public sale starts also and just thought I better take what I can get now and know that I have tickets. Not many bad seats in The Palace really.

I spoke to one of the producers of WayHome festival last night, and he said Ray's set with MMJ is the one he is most looking forward to all weekend. Says that he's been told there will be some pretty bitchin' covers in rotation throughout the tour. Added to my excitement even further!!

QuoteLaMontagne is a famously shy frontman, and he'd basically shunted himself off to the far side of the stage, standing at an angle to the audience so he was really facing the band more than the crowd. But he was in fine voice and the new songs took flight in this setting, with the band largely accompanying him for the song proper and then opening up, swelling and building on the chord structure, embellishing the songs with atmospheric guitar work from Carl Broemel or a bonkers synth solo from Bo Koster -- and several solos from LaMontagne himself, who played an electric guitar on more than half the songs. The two musicians' ghostly harmonies, so familiar from MMJ songs, blended with LaMontagne's whispy voice in a manner completely different from the way they mesh with James, but equally complementary -- at times, the night's more haunting and trippy moments sounded like mid-'70s Pink Floyd songs that David Gilmour sings.

Carl is absolutely fucking SHREDDING!!! If they stretch out every song to ten minutes with a four-minute Carl solo at the end, I shant complain.
These songs are pretty sparse, leaving a lot of room for some seeeeeeeriously sustaaaaaaaiiiinnnneeeed soloing.
Sounds like Joe Cocker fronting Pink Floyd. I love it.

Have tix for the St. Auggie show but after this I'm sure one show won't be enough. Looking at hitting the Festival Pier show as well.
Wow... well that seals that, these guys are already great together. I think their live performances will turn out to be pretty spectacular. This is really a special moment in music if you're into these artists because number one this kicks total ass and number two there is no guarantee that this will ever happen again.
I came into this thread to talk about the possibility of Jim joining them at a stop or two on the tour. Probably Louisville would be most obvious but i guess we'll see. It's going to be strange watching Jim come out to the band with a lead singer already on stage. It would be extremely hard for someone who has as much talent and stage presence as Jim not to steal the spotlight from Ray in that situation but I have a feeling Jim is humble enough to pull it off and that will be a very cool and also interesting moment.
I already posted this in another thread, but Groupon has tickets for the 9/23 Woodlands show for $35 with fees.
I was very impressed with my first listen of Ouroboros. All the more psyched for August 5 in Des Moines. For any Chicago peeps, I grabbed a ticket for the August 6 show before realizing Ray would be coming to Iowa the day before, so go here if you want a good seat below face value.

While we're all basking in the wonderful stories and recordings from RR, I was curious how many on here are going to see the boys with Ray over the summer? Would it be out of line to set up Roll Call type threads for any of these shows, if people are going, so we can keep up to date/check in/meet up/reminisce afterwards?
I'm going to the Louisville Palace show August 2nd.
I'm going to the St. Louis show. Really excited and interested to hear how it's all going to play out. I can imagine the boys on a good chunk of the new album, but as I've gone through the rest of Ray's discography, I've kind of been thinking with each song, "can I picture the boys playing on this one? What about this one?"
I've loved Ray since I first heard Trouble and have only seen him twice so I'd be going no matter who was playing with him. getting MMJ minus Jim as Ray's band is a big bonus! I'll be very curious to hear the band on some of the older stuff, especially on God Willin and the Creek Don't Rise stuff. I love that album.
I'll be at the Artpark show in Lewiston, NY. Ray was asked how he thought the shows would go when the MMJ tie in was announced. He said he'd prolly come out and do a few songs alone to get warmed up, then the band would join him to play the whole new record, and that there would obviously be some surprises mixed in. I'm sure it's all subject to change, but as we all know, MMJ is arguably the most musically able band out there, so I'd say expect any and everything. Can't wait to see and hear how this goes!

Hoping to hear some reports from the Cinci show tomorrow night! Will be interesting to see what they've got in store!
I'm seeing them in Columbus tomorrow night (6/11). I'll let you guys know how it is!
Personally, I didn't love the album, but overall it's chill with some strong moments.
Sounds like it went the way Ray envisioned it. He came out and did a solo set, then the boys joined him for a second. Played over two hours.
Looks like there is a poster for each show. Clinton Reno did a cool one for Columbus tonight.
Yes, what amskinz said. After the acoustic set they played Ouroboros in full. The guys sounded really great, and they added some longer solo sections onto certain songs. After the album, they play Ray's older, rock-oriented stuff. I'm not familiar with it, but I think it was mostly from the album Supernova. Definitely a more chill than rockin' performance, but when they rocked, they ROCKED. They held back a little bit because it wasn't THEIR show, but it was pretty great. One song reminded me of "Carried Away" and Carl took a solo on it. BEAUTIFUL. Many people sitting around us were asking about the Jacket boys, and I proudly represented the band when I could.
Overall, a very psychedelic evening with some rockin' moments. 7.5/10

Cant wait to hear ouroboros this summer in person. the album is 9.5/10 IMHO.
The discussion on this has gone cold. Has anyone been out to the Ray shows over the last 10 days? I was hoping to read a few more reviews on how the setlists have turned out and how the guys are sounding with Ray. Travelling to see them in Raleigh in a few weeks in order to hold me over until Lockn.
There's a few vids on youtube from Philly on 6-18. I'm thinking of doing the Chi show so I picked up Ouroboros just now to see what this is all about.
Heading to Prospect Park show tonight

Was just coming to drop the same link. God I love FUV
Every time I've seen Ray prior to the current tour, people sit. My first Ray show was in 2009 and I was baffled by sitting at a concert, but that's what people do apparently. Who knew?! The tour opener (Cincinnati) was no different, which I'm sure you've read. Acoustic Ray opened for Ray LaMonjacket, which was cool. He played the majority of the "popular" songs during the first set. Plenty of people left during the second part of the show, which I found amusing. The sound was great, and I like the new material which is exactly what drove some away. Supernova was a little cheesy... We only stood during the encore. Backgrounds were awesome.

very sweet words from Ray about the guys.
Last night's radio stream is on Dime: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=564817 (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=564817). Anyone with a decent ratio feel like grabbing and sharing? I'd grab it myself, but my Dime ratio is toast
Tomorrow's Boston show will be webcast on Yahoo. I'll be in attendance so if anyone can record the stream that would be much appreciated!
I think this is the link (?):

I was very frustrated that I could not get the stream to work. I have Amazon Fire TV and a wired ethernet connection, yet the Yahoo! app said it couldn't get a secure connection and "refused" to display the live stream. I didn't feel like sitting at my computer in our small, windowless office, so gave up and spent some quality time with the wife. I'm sure it was a great one and hope someone captured the stream, as well...
Is Carl playing a new/different guitar in the video ? Have not seen playing a Gibson semi-acoustic with MMJ before ?
Saw the show at Artpark in Lewiston last night. First time seeing Ray, and I was totally blown away. I really like Ouroboros. But they brought it all to life. Extending almost every song. They played for the song when required. Then they let loose when it was time. You could tell watching Ray that the boys really brought out the best in him, and each other. The merch guy told me the MMJ guys were raving about the venue, and surrounding scenery all the way from Boston after playing here for the first time last year. Hopefully that means they'll all be back eventually. I didn't see any tapers. Bummed about that. I talked to Ryan Pickett a bit, gave me his setlist actually. He said they record all the shows, but Ray doesn't release much. I hope to find some recording soon. It was truly magical. It'll be tough to top if for show of the year for me, if I can't manage to catch MMJ soon.
Just checked TicketBastard for the Lousivlle show and it doesn't look like they have sold many tickets. Being less than 2 weeks away, plenty of good seats are still available. To those who have been to one of the shows, how well have they been attended? I'm sure the nearly $100 ticket price after fees isn't helping.

saw them Tuesday in Portsmouth, VA. Very sparse crowd, walked down from seats to the orchestra section with no problem. There was a big storm beforehand so walk-ups were probably low.
And because there was a delay to the show due to the storm, he skipped the acoustic portion and went straight to Ouroboros. There were MANY confused faces. I quite enjoyed that b/c I was really only there for Ouroboros.
I thought for sure the Louisville show would sell out!
I got an email this morning about discounted tickets even.
I bought my tickets on the pre-sale thinking they'd go fast.
Oh well. I will be there and am very excited!

Saw them in Cleveland about a month ago and it was a pretty good crowd.
I too went for the Ourobors portion of show but it did seem that the majority of the crowd was only there for Ray's radio friendly songs...

yeah, tickets are down to $80, $60 for the balcony.
still overpriced, imo. as much as i'd like to go just for the jacket boys, can't justify the cost.
I agree it was very expensive, more than I was expecting...but I have been a fan of Ray's since I first heard him when Trouble first came out, and have only seen him twice, so it's a double win for me with most of MMJ being Ray's backing band.
I only paid $45 for tix in Cleveland. Must be the venue as to why the tix are so high in Louisville?
I too have been a longtime fan of Ray and with MMJ as the backing band and Ouroboros being such a great album, I would have paid more.
And the fact that they play Ouroboros front to back makes it even sweeter!
Take the plunge Mr. White! I think you will be happy you did!
and also Mr. White - look for these 2 albums: Trouble and God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise as a way to hear Ray's finest material. These are his 2 best albums in my opinion.
I think I got pretty close up floor seats and that's why I paid a little more too. It's going to be worth it!!
Also coming up at The Palace, another amazing double header for me when Josh Ritter opens for Jason Isbell 9/29
Detroit folks! My sister has an extra lawn ticket for tomorrow night's show. We would love to see it not go to waste! Anyone interested?
Has Ray been hitting the stage pretty much right at 7?
Saw MMRay the other night at WayHome, and GOOD LORD they might have been my favorite act of the whole weekend (if it wasn't for a devastatingly awesome LCD set). I must have seen about two dozen bands all weekend and Ray and the boys stood miiiiles above every other act in terms of sound. Their tone is fucking fantastic.
I was (admittedly) fortunate enough that they just launched right into Ouroboros and skipped the acoustic portion, which was awesome because I wanted nothing more than to rock. Their sound is juuuust hard enough to rock out and juuuust chill enough to get into a blissed-out trance.
It was so cool to see Bo get so much play. Had a few nice solos and really killed it on the harmonies all night. "Drive-In Movies", "Lavender", "She's The One" were all major highlights, but "Hey No Pressure" (all of Ouroboros, really) was just phenomenal.
Posted up Carl side, which was awesome as always, but really, everyone was on top of their game. Really don't think there is a better musical unit ANYWHERE these days, and I think the way they adapt to being Ray's band proves it.
I am the furthest thing from a Ray fan -- in fact, some hardcore Ray fans I talked to after the show had less than kind things to say -- but this tour is a must-see. It'll likely never happen again, and I felt very fortunate to have seen it. Especially in a festival atmosphere where I could truly let loose like I would at a Jacket show.
Keep it up boys!
Yeah my understanding is that hardcore Ray fans aren't really digging the RAWK going on onstage. I like Ray's old stuff enough and I think I'll enjoy the acoustic portion tonight, but I don't think I would have ever bought tickets to see him without the whole MMJ factor. Should be pretty great.
And for people who are bigger MMJ fans than Ray fans, but still love Ray too (like me) I have a feeling I will love both parts!!! So excited for the Palace show on Tuesday!
Hope they have something special in store for the MMJ hometown crowd!!
Went to St. Louis last night. show was fantastic. The boys sounded really good. There were definitely a lot of people (including a couple who went with me) who were definitely not prepared to see that from a Ray Lamontagne show. Just kept yelling out songs from his first album, and seemed to be unaware that he even had a new album, or had been trending toward this sound for the previous two. Like, I get he's made a stylistic change and I get that some people are going to like his previous music more, but if you buy tickets to see an artist when you haven't even listened to his most recent 3 albums, then I don't really know what to tell you.
Before the show started, I knew one woman I was behind in the drink line was going to be disappointed with the show when I heard her talking to her friend about a killer Jason Mraz show she went to.
ha! very funny.
I am going to Nashville show on Friday. Do they have an opener or show starts as says on ticket?

no opener, I think they go on at 8:30
Attended the show at the Fox last night and it was well worth getting some under face Craigslist tickets (face value was overpriced to me...)
Not really a Ray fan but he and the boys sounded like they've been in a band together for years. It was a perfect date night for those debating whether to go. I thought Bo really shined on the keys too!
I thought the boys killed it last night in Louisville! Really brought a lot of life to the songs from Ouroboros. Almost even made me like the songs from Supernova...but not quite.
Band sounded absolutely perfect and Ray's voice was great as expected. He talked more than I would have imagined, mostly about being in Louisville to make the record and what a unique and wonderful experience it was for him. He said it was the most fun he ever had in the studio...something like that.
My only complaint is that I loved the solo Ray bit, loved the Ouroboros part too, but after they finished the album they played many more Ray songs and they were pretty much all from Supernova, which I really just didn't like. I know the boys can't learn all of Ray's songs but it just would have been nice to hear 2-3 others.
Performance-wise they sounded fantastic. and The Palace is just the best venue.
Catching Ray Morning Jacket at Hinterland Music Festival near Des Moines, Iowa tonight, with my 12 yr. old daughter tagging along. San Fermin, Houndmouth, and Cold War Kids precede MMRay. Weather looks great. Looking forward to it...
Austin show cancelled
Ray LaMontagne's performance scheduled for this Thursday, September 22nd at Bass Concert Hall has been cancelled due to concerns over The University of Texas' recently enacted campus carry law, which allows licensed holders to carry concealed handguns in the venue during the performance.
Of the cancellation, Mr. LaMontagne says, "I consider myself to be a very open minded human being, and I always try and see things from another's point of view. I realize this is a controversial issue and there are strong feelings on both sides of it. But no matter how hard I try to understand the rationale for allowing guns on campus or more broadly, the 'concealed carry' law in general, I just cannot in any way support that ideology.
There are a lot of things this country needs more of, but guns aren't one of them.
The whole state of Texas is an open carry state. Is he going to cancel his Houston and Dallas shows as well?

i think it was more about it being a college campus being open carry. i also could be missing the point

From the pictures I've seen, it looks like no one is filling in.
I saw a photo on the Facebook page where it looked like Carl's spot was left open. Even had monitors set up.
I knew they didn't have anybody that first day that Carl had to cancel, but I was hoping they would have been able to get someone else for the remainder of the tour. Oh well.....I guess I will know for sure tomorrow.

they are playing as a 4-piece. From what I've heard Bo is the one really filling that gap. On twitter Bo said "no one can replace my dude Carl"
My experience at the Ray show this summer would lead me to say that it seems like the quality of the show would take an enormous hit minus a lead guitar player.

I went to the first show without Carl and it took an enormous hit without his input. I like Ray, but I wanted to hear Carl's guitar on those tunes more than anything. The rest of the boys were admirable but it was a pretty boring night of music without Carl in my opinion.
And I believe the Austin cancellation had to due with a recent change in the open carry law that allows for carrying a firearm on College Campuses in the state.
Carl was a big part of the show when they played the NFF.
Too bad he had to drop out but he needs to get better for his own tour!
