I'm going to need to hit that Pappy show, just wish it wasn't on a Wednesday, traffic will be brutal getting out of San Diego.

Pappy and harriets will fit Jim well. Very intimate show to check out. Also any excuse to go to Jushua Tree.

DAMMIT! Taking a trip to Joshua Tree literally three days later. Now to see if I can get these flights changed...

Now that sounds more doable than rearranging everything for a Radiohead show.  I hope you can make it work.  And I hope this leads to more JJ shows in October.

The Fillmore date is a little misleading. It's a Connor Oberst show that Jim James
is listed as a guest for. Should be great but hardly a Jim James show.

Those aren't full band shows.  The * below the JJ dates indicates that those two are with Twin Limb.

I blew off the Pappy & Harriet show thinking Jim was opening for Conor Oberst.  Thinking now of heading up for the show, especially because there is nothing closer to San Diego on his new tour.

It says an outdoor show. Anybody been the venue?

It will be on the outdoor stage. I've seen four shows at Pappy's (Eagles of Death Metal, Toro y Moi, Fatso Jetson, and Alain Johannes), and if you've never been to Pappy's before, this could be a pretty magical experience to see Jim under the stars, maybe even a shooting star. I'd recommend getting there a little early to grab some BBQ (hopefully you're not vegetarian as there aren't many non-meat items) and be sure to bring cash because the outdoor bar was cash only the last time I was out there. The drive up from SD is about 2.5 hrs without traffic, and with mid-week Temecula backups, plan accordingly.

Thanks for the info tee-dub.  Sounds awesome. Looks like the first solo show in a while so maybe there will be some new Eternally Even material. Jim's set time is listed as 9 pm so there is some padding for the Temecula parking lot.

Wonder if this segment of shows will be different than the more extensive tour? I feel as though he may hold back some of the newer material until the november tour starts.

I dont think you will hear anything more than the single that was released. In this day and age he wouldnt want songs online before album is out.I love that about this show endless possibilities!!

Lots of possibilities! Down on the Bottom would be a great jam.  Monsters of Folk tunes are a strong chance considering the Conor Oberst shows coming up.  Would not mind those at all.

Just got home from show. tons of new material. All really great. Definitely politically driven. Plenty of organ sounding tunes like on Same Old Lie. They played maybe 7 new songs? 7 from regions light sound. and 'changing world' on acoustic solo.

I won't touch those YouTube livestream posts with a 10 foot pole.  The person posting has no other videos on their channed, the site takes you to other URLs, which seems fishy.  But, more to the point, if there is a live stream of a Jim or MMJ show, I believe they will tell us themselves.  These YouTube live stream posts are showing up for damn near every show and are always sketchy, the deeper you dig.  Caution... enter at own risk.

Anyone heading to the Fillmore Saturday night? M Ward was added to the Hardly/Strictly lineup for that afternoon. Seems plausible he would join Conor and Jim later that evening...

Tonight was the 20th time I have seen Jim, 15 with MMJ. It was the first time I left thinking, WTF? He seemed more interested in showing off his arms than engaging us with his enormous talent. Tell me to F off if you like, but he was more visual than audible in comparison to any other time I have seen him.

was curious about this too based on some video I've seen - I think they are still working the kinks out at start of tour (always a risk going to first shows - either gold or bumpy).  Also not too fond of the guitar fills on AEIOU, but perhaps Carl's fills have spoiled me a bit - they sound fuzzy and muted as opposed to the frontal lobotomy that Carl performs with his Les Paul.

Details? Was is the new material, the band, his general demeanor or
Something he said? Isnt this band different from the last one he toured with for regions? I briefly listened to the new songs from pappys and was fairly happy with what I heard but didn't give it a deep dive.

Jim was a front man for Twin Limb. The new album sounded almost just like Regions. Nothing spectacular when not familiar with it. He barely touched a guitar. A lot of posing. A lot of jams by a band not nearly as good as the last solo tour, with Jim not participating, and is back to the crowd. A lot of that.

I think here in spirit is easily better than anything on his first album. Great song.

Confused about the twin limb remarks above. When you say that Jim was the frontman for twin limb was this a jim set or TL set?

I'm not familiar with Twin Limb and that name was not mentioned last night so I'm not sure if I saw the same backing band as rincon2. 5 piece band, 2 girls and 3 guys. Pretty sure the guitar player was on Jim's last solo tour but didn't recognize the others or catch the names when Jim introduced them. Well played set IMO. I really enjoyed the new tunes, especially Here in Spirit. Jim's stage presence was very similar to the Regions of Light shows. Guitar on a stand,  prowling the stage, lots of hand gesturing. He seemed to be having fun and was engaged with the audience. Conor's set was good as well but I was there for Jim and was happy to see him and M Ward join him for a couple tunes. Solid evening overall.

The backing band in Ventura was Twin limb, 2 women one with accordion, and a male guitarist, with an extra drummer and bass player. The guitar player was not the same guy as last time. All I am saying is last time about half the show was songs from previous Jim incarnations, this had zero. Half the songs I have never heard, and they all sounded similar with no prior exposure. Jim played the guitar on less than half the songs, not even in ones with long jams.Even during the sax solo from Regions, he did not play it. It was tape, or synthesizer.Hey, it was Jim playing in my town, how bad could it really be? But it did not blow my mind like 2013, or New Multitudes, or MMJ. I went with a friend, a Ventura musician who is very well known here. He ran into dozens of people he knows. None of them expressed being blown away. I saw about 15 people from the MMJ community there that I know. Their reaction was much more positive than the locals, so bias and expectations play a part.

Yeah but did they like the show?

I know the bar is set pretty high at "being blown away" and we seem to always expect that from Jim and MMJ but I can still like and enjoy a show without having it blow me away.  In fact a lot of the shows I've seen and enjoyed in my life fall in that catagory.

I enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure most did. I loved it being in my backyard, in a small venue, and only 50% full.  Most will get to hear the album before they see him, that is a big positive. It was not bad by any means, but absolutely nothing like 2013, which was a surprising barn burning show.

I was able to get to all the California shows last week and I have to say I can't wait for the album release. The songs began to feel familiar and dug deeply! Pappy & Harriets is such a great venue, that was beyond a special treat. Love the Majestic in Ventura but I was right up front and the sound wasn't the best. The energy was high and delivered a great show, loved the one by one exit of the band up the side stairs. Applause to the female drummer who was on crutches for making the exit up the staircase, impressive.

I had closed my eyes towards the end of the show and when I opened them Jim was on the staircase smiling down. I thoroughly enjoyed the show despite a very agro spatially challenged man who wanted to get into it by calling me a bitch. I was not having it or engaging as you're not going to ruin my show Agro Inappropriate handsy man! I sometimes find myself next to these types up front, rare but it happens. Just an excuse to dig deeper, close your eyes and feel the great healing love from the music. I've saged/smudged myself now, so I think I've nipped the problem in the bud!

Twin Limb was great, love having women in the mix- much like the talented bass player Alana Rocklin last Jim tour. Kevin Ratterman impressed the hell out of me at the shows and I can see why he's such a great Engineer. Seth from Floating Action- always great to witness his talent, and David Givens much like Patrick is a force on those drums! I think the biggest issue of all the shows was in Ventura and it was the sound... But it is the beginning of the tour and things need to be tweaked and fall into place. That being said you all are in for a big treat! ROLAS songs feel heavier and deeper for me and I really dig the new songs some classics in there for years to come. I think it will be a grower for some and creep up to the love zone of a classic album in the future! Happy shows to you all!!!

My two cents for the Pappy & Harriet's show and the new material - the venue was great you could smell the desert and see the milky way when away from the lights.  Twin Limb opened and seemed talented but didn't draw me in. The songs/band were quite serious and accordion sound is overwhelming.
Jim was backed by Twin Limb plus the bass player and Dave Givan on drums. Much less of a rock feel than MMJ.   It was strange to see him hardly touch the guitar but he moved around a lot in the small space.  Not sure that the group is comfortable playing together yet. I don't really care for the amount of recorded parts. Some live horns would really rock it out.
The new material was impressive, especially Worlds Smilin and We Aint Getting Younger (heavy and funky). Can't wait to hear these on the album or at another show.

So I'm not sure which show you saw but I've listened to the one from the 28th a couple times now and I have to disagree with you about the new music. I would say the only thing it really has in common with the first one is that it doesn't sound like My Morning Jacket and it could loosely all fit under the soul and Funk umbrella.  Personally I feel like the quality of these songs is at least two notches higher.

At the very least I think this album will have a lot more staying power in terms of wanting to go back and listen to it over the years and I am very intrigued to see which ones end up on MMJ setlist eventually.

Really? You question my first impression after you listened to a show several times? I was at Ventura, and heard all those songs for the very first time ever, and have not been re-listening to them. My recollection was the songs I have never heard before were similar. I suppose when the album comes out it will prove me wrong, but to try to prove my first impression, made in a live setting, is inaccurate, seems like a strained point. You state it does not sound like MMJ, and is loosely similar in soul and funk? That kinda makes my point.

Sure, but i could tell after the first listen that this was a different ballgame.  There is no "We aint gettin any younger" or "hide in plain site" on Regions.  The new songs are just better.  And they are more laid back, less forced.  Less boundaries.

Anyway, sorry if this comes off as judgmental.  I read your original post and was kind of let down since i didnt really care for Regions when the dust settled.  Very excited about the new one though.

Having only heard them once, in person live, I have no idea what songs you are talking about. Who makes critical judgements on songs the first time you ever hear them, especially live?

I wouldnt call it a critical judgement.  It was just hard not to notice.  One song went on for more than 11 minutes!!  But i should say that the main reason i listened to the recording in the first place was to get a taste for the new album.  So while i wasnt sitting back with pen and paper, i was definitely listening more actively than if i had just thrown on a live set and went about my day.

Well, after a few listens to the studio album, all I can say is there is only one previous album ever made that this sounds like, and it is Regions. Could almost be disc 2 of a double album. Sure, you can point out differences, but it is like a parent pointing out differences between their twin children.
