I've had some ideas:
Ours, GOMEZ, Beck, Black Crowes, Jayhawks, Pearl Jam, U2
what do you guys think?
CAT POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!
M. Ward & Sufjan Stevens
Iron and Wine
Swearing at Motorists
Kings of Leon (Mabey)
iron and wine, great idea!!
im not too familiar with the other guys.. kings of leon could be good too!
Oh lord - to anyone who just saw what I posted, I blame the bourbon followers, for Makers Mark has made me much too silly this evening.
I think they should tour with Mr. Heinl again. I loved him.
Neil Young. :)
QuoteNeil Young.
Definetely!
I just received an sms from neil, and he would be honored ;D
NO ONE!!!!!!!!!
I know it would be hard work for Jim, but what about a solo acoustic set followed by the ghetto blasting full band!?????
I know it will never happen but I would love to see a solo tour similar to the M. Ward, Bright Eyes and Jim James but have Jim James, Chan Marshall, and Eddie Vedder. I think Eddie and Jim could do some awesome harmonizing. Eddie's voice is really low and Jim's is really high. It may sound far fetched but Eddie was on the last Cat Power record and M. Ward and Chan are really good friends and Jim and M. Ward are real good friends. Ok this would be the best tour of all time,
Eddie Vedder
Neil Young
Jim James
M. Ward
Chan Marshall
The Words and Guitar Tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the idea of a solo Jimmy show. How about throwing in Bob Pollard and Bob Mould as opposed to M.Ward and Bright Eyes. By the way, can that guy get any more press....it's like re-living the Ryan Adams hoopla. In terms of bands I like the thought of Kings of Leon who I will be seeing on the 26th. Richmond Fontaine would be great. Another would be The Killers.
D.
-Pine Club
-The Black Keys
-Beta Band
-BRMC
-Cash Brothers
-Those Bastard Souls
-Sun Kil Moon
-massive garage shout out with The Hives, The Strokes, White Stripes, Mooney Suzuki, and all those other garage bands you love to hate to love
'tis a hard one to call. on one hand, you want to see new music and get to know new bands...on the other, you want a balanced show.
M. Ward: He has a new album coming up
Black Keys for us primal blues lovers! Jim and Dan (from The Black Keys) could jam together on No Fun by The Stooges, The Keys' regular set closer! How cool would that be...
Will Johnson/Centromatic
Phoenix
Jeff Tweedy
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: + Jim James on Lotta love, or Out On The Weekend!
Would all be mighty fine by me
what in the hell is this Phoenix crap I keep hearing on my internet radio station? Do you really like it, or am hearing a song that does not give this band justice. Anyways, the song is quite annoying, and I would be appaled if I had to hear them in the same building as fine musicians as MMJ. Anyone?
Bands I would like:
Black Crowes? did they not breakup and start solo bands?
Not a big fan of all this solo stuff, let's keep the band together, the way it has been for a bit. Jim had plenty of his own touring this past year, I think it is time to record an album and tour with the rest of this incredible group of rockers. We are all in need of a GOOD GODDAM rock show! Hurry up mother f-ers! Hurry! These bands out here all suck. Hurry.
The Black Crowes are reuniting for a few shows before they decide if they want to do a full-scale tour next later this year. I'd like to see 'em.
As for the Killers, they can suck my left nut. I hate that fucking song that's on the radio all the time. I threw up a little bit when one of my friends said that she liked them. Blech.
Lucero
Hnads down would be a great opener for MMJ. Has both the great upbeat fun songs and the ballads that would work with the MMJ style. I think both bands could pick up alot of fans.
Devendra Banhart should open.
Or maybe a collaberation with Bjork :o
Wow, I love the Beck idea. He is such a genius, IMHO, and the perfect complement to their mood. That would definitely create some exposure for the boys.
Weird. Honest Man is just ending, and I just thought "Wow, that sounds like Beck."
QuoteWow, I love the Beck idea. He is such a genius, IMHO, and the perfect complement to their mood. That would definitely create some exposure for the boys.
I agree, "Coplement thier mood" is a great way to put it. I also think they both have a similar sense of humor. I think Beck and Jim would really like each other. I know I would love to see them tour together.
I also really like the Wilco/Jacket tour idea!
Lucero sounds intriguing too. also i forgot to mention Calexico in my original post!
Phoenix has some nice poppy singles, like Too Young, or If I Ever Feel Better. Think it would be a relaxing opening for the real MMJ-madness! Don't know the rest of their music though, won't be great probably...
And what about these
Grandaddy: duet on He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot, imagine that, Jim singing the 'did you love this world, and did this world not love you' part... Sounds cool.
And for a full-blown rock-show
Steve Wynn and The Miracle Three
Rolling Stones, would be great in little clubs!
It's obvious. It has to be The Wildhearts.
You are all going, yeah, The Wildhearts!!!!!!. Makes sense.
Word.
(who are the wildhearts, again, greggy?)
Los Lobos
Los Lobos? Are you sure?
Quote(who are the wildhearts, again, greggy?)
:o
Hmm... Well I looked them up on allmusic just now, and apparently their music is:
"Dramatic"!
"Party/" (the backslash is not a typo)
"Rambunctious"
"Freewheeling" and
"Uncompromising".
(but I've still never heard of them.)
Jacket/Jayhawks would be the sweetest tour ever! I also think that these would be good combos:
Damien Rice/Jacket
Jacket/Ryan Adams
Ours/Jacket
Jacket/U2 - if only to get them the exposure!
QuoteLos Lobos? Are you sure?
sure what the hey...
Fair Enough. I don't know much about them other than thier single was played 5 billion times in the span of three weeks, and I hated it. I just worry about MMJ catching on like that, because I went to see Modest Mouse last week and they played in a crappy venue, to an unusual crowd, where I was stuck in the very back, I blame all of this on that damn Float On single. :'( I mean I love the song and I love the album but to much exposure can be a killer!!!!!!!
Los Lobos has some very cool tunes and should not be judged by what actually hit the airwaves. This is something I see echoed in the MMJ area--I only remember local radio playing "One Big Holiday" and "Golden" which are nice but far from plumbing the true depths of MMJ. I think they would present an interesting match of sounds.
They should tour with Drive By Truckers or David Bowie, only because Johnny Cash passed away.
I think Beck would be genius, and Iron and Wine would fit perfectly as well.
King Elementary.
Look out for these guys this summer. They have their first CD coming out this spring. I have seen them twice and they R O C K. They have also signed a multi-record deal with Capital Records. And they're in high school!
I promise folks, King Elementary!

I think they should tour with Kajagoogoo.Or maybe Poison and/or Great White ;D
QuoteThey should tour with Drive By Truckers or David Bowie, only because Johnny Cash passed away.
I totally agree that they should tour with DBT. Both bands ROCK live and think they would compliment each other on a co-headlining tour.
Elvis Costello
Elbow, Damien Rice, or VHS or Beta....
from all appearances its gonna be M Ward :)
Man, hasn't M sold enough records to afford a real first name?!
Stereophonics, Badly Drawn Boy, I am Kloot, or Zero 7 would all be great line ups cards too...

You seem to know A LOT of inside information these days Mr. Fanatic. Are you a spy? What's the deal? ;)
there's this really awesome band called Verbena that just got dropped by capitol, they are great. southern sounds from alabama. i'm sure they could use an opening spot on a good tour with a good band though for sure.

Fruit Bats.
And, yes, I am aware that I say the same band every time this question is asked. There's a reason for that.
(but, if not Fruit Bats, Bob Seger. Night Moves! ;))
If its not the Fruit Bats it has to be the Wildhearts.

the only way to improve on that plan is to have an open bar ;)
How about a Wilco/ My Morning Jacket co-headlining Tour with M.Ward as an opener?
PapaJoeBear
replace Wilco w/ John Prine
NO SHARING. Only them. According to me.
i still think an opener would be nice. perhaps throw in jeff tweedy solo opening for that 2 set show??

I think Ed Harcourt is excellent and small time enough to open for a band of MMJs stature... anyone familiar with him?
Also, I would much rather see MMJ tour with VHS or Beta than another tour with M Ward. VHS or Beta are great!
QuoteAlso, I would much rather see MMJ tour with VHS or Beta than another tour with M Ward. VHS or Beta are great!
I don't know if the tour VHSorBeta would happen. Although the two bands support each other and are great friends, I think they both would be someone hesitant. If they want to make it a Louisville tour, I think "The Merediths" would be an awesome opener. I know they have opened for VHS or Beta. If VHS or Beta/MMJ did happen, may I suggest "Run for the Roses" as the tour's name. I would love to see VHS or Beta help out with "Cobra" or "Run Thru."
I like both bands but I wouldn't want to see both at the same show. Vhs or Beta is playing with Ambulance Ltd at The Exit In Friday night and I think that is a great match. I've said it before but I'll say it again....

I just went to a Blue Oyster Cult show. It was one of the best shows I've seen. BOC together with MMJ would be an incredible mind-blowing show.
Mike Doughty and MMJ would make a great tour. They are labelmates now and Doughty has a record coming out in a couple of months. I'd kill to see them play together.
Ok, that's harsh, but I'd really like to see them.
:)

I'm seeing them 4/15 at Mohegan Sun in CT--I am totally stoked :D. The last time I saw them was at the Channel in Boston--I conviced my buddy to hang out awhile after the crowd dispersed and I ended up drinking with Eric Bloom and Buck Darma (they even signed a $1 bill for me) it was 70's rock god nirvana 8)
i think jim should get the guys back from Month of Sundays and do a reunion tour. im partial to them over mmj.
Y'all are naming some cool bands, yes, but I think they should revisit Wayne Robbins & The Hellsayers opening for them. They were perfect, and with the new rockin' material and CD they're working on, it would be an amazing show. I am so not kidding. Plus I'm always for having an "unknown" band/artist get an opportunity to shine in front of a new and larger crowd. Why go with the same old, same old bands and combinations. I mean yes, a lot of the combos mentioned would be great - but who really needs more than MMJ on that stage to kick it????
Ck. 'em out for a mind expanding and possibly altering experience :-). http://www.goodluckcricket.com/hellsayers/index.html

thanks Laurie,
you're too sweet. It'd be a dream come true to play w/ MMJ on tour......i think it'd work out well, too..maybe someday. 11 songs mixed for demo cd and you'll hear them
how about dead meadow...they are gaining steam and both rock out pretty hard....dead meadow could open, everyone would smoke out and love it while they pound us with slow guitars...than we smoke again and get drunk when mmj comes on with their joyous yet hard music. sounds like fun.
sounds like a plan...but I would like to actually remember any MMJ show that I attend.
Quotesounds like a plan...but I would like to actually remember any MMJ show that I attend.
I follow your method, Eisey. I'm useless under influences, as far as focus and memory are concerned. So if it's something I love (like the MMJ), I like to rock (mostly) pure and drink later. (Perhaps that should be my new motto.) r.o.c.k.
I dont know if I alreayd mentioned it, but how about Iron and Wine? Two amazing beards, two amazing acoustic sets. Hmmm? 8)

Thought I would bump this as I was just thinking who else would be great for MMJ to tour with and I after reading this Post there seems like quite a few good options here and a couple that actually came true. If I could choose one band fo the boys to tour with it would be TV on the Radio. Those would be some funky experimental shows and would love to see some collaboratons between the groups.

Agreed - I prefer to get right to business with MMJ.
If we HAD to have an opener, I didn't mind Floating Action in PC. The double drum kits were solid. Also, while I didn't love Antiballas as a band, their horns made PC2 a very rich recording (despite a couple of errant honks here and there).
I just can't wait for jacket to go on a solo tour again. Get that album recorded!
Also, after seeing wilco, I really want to see them by themselves as well.
But yeah I agree with floating action. I'd be really happy with wax fang as well.

I agree PHJB is just about the perfect opening band for MMJ.
I'd also love to see The Hold Steady join them on tour.
Just no Band of Horses or Dawes, please.
The Hold Steady would be great, but that would be a twin-bill headliner. Nothing wrong with that, though.
There are a lot of indie acts out there that would be great openers - The Men, Widowspeak, Thee Idea Men, and many more. I just hope Jacket picks an up-and-coming band.
Ans how can I forget Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, and The Roots. Great possibilities for covers. Har Mar Superstar abd The Heavy would be great, too.

LD, Blucas and I saw Heartless Bastards in Flagstaff last night and I heartily concur they'd be a great opener for MMJ. Their drummer was particularly good. I really liked the simple arrangements and separation between the instruments. Just little Vox amps for the guitars, pared down drum kit. Reminded me of the Mother Hips a little bit, especially Heartless Bastards' drummer Dave Colvin. The Mother Hips would also be good on the bill with MMJ, I'd think.

I'm with you. At forecastle, my 3rd Shakes show, I was bored. They got way way way over hyped and played for having only one album. I'm totally burnt out.
Here here, I have now seen them 3 times. These were shows where they headlined (no fest sets), the longest they have played was just over an hour. hour and 15 to be exact. I know MMJ has spoiled me with long shows, but to charge what they did and only play that long, not worth it to me anymore.
So until they release more music, or start playing longer, I have no plans on spending money on their shows.

Ignignokt's opinion of Loverboy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Retd_zI4T4k#)
Hopefully they were just as good in 81 as they were in 85.

Ans how can I forget Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, and The Roots. Great possibilities for covers. Har Mar Superstar abd The Heavy would be great, too.
YES YES YES! please start booking these dance parties now. :cheesy:
