Title: MMJ warm-up music?
Post by: booboonuts on Jan 27, 2004, 01:44 PM
Saw the boys twice in a row last weekend and looking forward to another kick-ass show in D.C. Saturday.  I'm curious if anyone knows if the Jacket usually has the same music playing before the show?  Before the Charlottesville show I heard a song that might be by Sly and the Family Stone that might be called "Sing a Simple Song".  I also heard something that sounds like Portishead would have sampled, very deep, spy music-esque.  Song #3 sounded like Danzig singing to country music and the last song that I took note of was a Dr. Dog song from their album.  Before the Richmond show I heard those same songs.

That's usually picked but by the club. I know all the times i've seen them its been different tunes beforehand.

Usually yes, the club does pick what's playing before the live music begins.  But it's strange that I'd hear the same stuff in two different venues, no?

We'll see what's playing at the 9:30...

The pre-show music is usually played by the
sound man, not the club.

I am fairly certain that Jim is involved in the warm up music - I forget the songs but I was thinking in Detroit that this is a Jim James mixtape - Roy Orbison for sure, I think there was a Cash song .... and maybe a Sly and the Family Stone song

I don't know the name of the sound guy for the band,
but I do know that he always plays great music
before and after the show.

I guess it depends on where they play. Some venues have their own DJ, some let the sound guy do it, I suppose.

MMJ's manager was kind enough to drop me a line and here's what he says about the warm-up music:

"...Jim and the band pick the before-and-after music and our sound guy, Ryan Pickett also chimes in with an idea here-and-there.  Whatever they play beforehand usually sets the mood for them to get into the show.  They play everything from Dr. Dog to Neil Diamond to Sugie Otis to Junior Senior to The Flying Burrito Brothers."

I'm impressed that Mike dropped me a line about the thread personally.  We'll see if the 9:30 let's them choose their pre-show tunes.  I hope so :)
