Just got an email from bonnaroo.com letting me know that they are announcing some of the bands who will be playing at this year's music festival this wednesday. In case you don't know about bonnaroo--it is in the middle of Tennessee in the middle of June with temperatures in the mid-90s (at least last year it was). The boys have played the last two years, including last year's now-famous "Return to the Thunderdome" Performance. Anyways, I heard this past weekend from a credible source (i.e. an anonymous band member)that they are booked for the festival. If you have yet to see the band perform outside, in front of 15,000 sweaty ladies and gents, then here is your chance.
It'd be nice, but I don't do festivals like that. Can't be that far away from a clean toilet. It's a hygiene thing. I'll wait 'til they hit Nashville again.
:)
Last years MMJ performance stole the show,IMO.
Olwiggum,
Don't ever let the lack of sanitized toilets keep you from seeing one of the best festivals in the country--especially one that is only an hour from your home. C'mon, give Mr. Bonnaroo a chance! Besides, the toilets are all clean in the early morning.
right! one of the best festivals in the world. i'm gonna try hard to be there again. hope to see you all too. that is if they're playin cause i don't know that yet. really, i don't. honestly :)

Jack Johnson, Joss Stone, Widespread Panic also to do Tennessee fest
The fourth annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival will feature first-timers the Dave Matthews Band, Modest Mouse, Joss Stone and the Mars Volta, as well as returning acts like Widespread Panic, the Allman Brothers Band and Jack Johnson.
The camping and music event runs June 10th through the 12th on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, south of Nashville, and is complemented by non-musical activities that in years past have included a twenty-four-hour cinema, an arcade, a comedy tent and a Mardi Gras-style parade. Other artists scheduled to perform include Rilo Kiley, My Morning Jacket, Iron and Wine, Drive-By Truckers, Joanna Newsom, Citizen Cope, and Alison Krauss and Union Station.
Of his return to Bonnaroo, Johnson says, "It has the vibe. Not just for the fans, but also for the bands. Backstage is exactly how I would have dreamed these festivals would be: musicians sitting around showing each other songs, watching each others' sets from the side of the stage. And some of the best live music that I have seen was at those past festivals."
As in past years, a live CD and DVD from 2004's festival will be available in April.
that's it! gotta start packin'!
Yeah, fuck it. I'm goin'.
('wiggum, are you SERIOUS? You wouldn't go because of TOILETS? You could bring your own.... :))
LaurieBlue, you're very tremendous with all of your reporting!

Why thank you! It's news worth reporting..no doubt :-)

Modest Mouse, Mars Volta, My Morning Jacket, Iron and Wine. :o
I just shit my pants when I read this so I can probably handle a port a pot.
I'll see you guys there.
No seriously. The idea of portapotties and lack of showers has me twitching already.
I'd fucking LOVE the chance to see MMJ and DBT in the same day, but I don't know if I could handle that. Maybe I'd be up for a one-day thing, but I don't know.
'wiggum, have you never camped?
(I'm not being sarcastic.)
You know, with concerts like this, you're allowed not to shower. It's like at the cottage - you kind of forget.
(heh)
The last time I went camping was when I was in the 5th grade or something like that. I could deal with the not showering much better back then.
Y'all have fun for me and I'll live vicariously through the wonders of digital recording (from the comforts of my own living room). :)
:) Okay.
Hey Wiggum, Monday night there was a Tsunami benefit concert in CA. The performers are as follows; Jack Black, Will Ferell, Eddie Vedder, Josh Holme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl, Beck, Tennacious D. They ended with everyone on stage jamming out on "Good Times Bad Times" by Led Zepplin. Halfway through Will Ferell came out and ripped it up on the COW BELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thought you would appreciate that.
No word yet on the toilet situation. ;)

(I hope you don't get mad, wiggy. It's just for funny! :))
If this is the ONLY Jacket show coming up, then I will brave no toilets, showers and tough it out with DMB fans!:P (sorry to offend anyone) And if the Jacket's Bonnaroo show from last year is any incidation of how inspired their set will be, it's a must!!
Heee! That made me laugh out loud a little, EC. :)
Sweatboard, I read the review on one of the Tenacious D boards that I frequent. Man, I wish I could have been there. I know that someone got audio of it, but I haven't gotten a definite answer about the video part of it yet.
It's confirmed. The boys will be there. See this site for other kick-ass bands as well.

i think i'll be going up there this year!!! how much are tickets?
Quotei think i'll be going up there this year!!! how much are tickets?
usually between $140-$200 after fees and depending on when you buy them. usually there is a glut of tickets two weeks before the festival if you know where to look and you can get them for under face. note i said usually... who knows what will happen with dmb and panic playing.

how does the stage area work? am i gonna have to watch mmj play from a mile away or will they be on a smaller stage that i can stake out?
Quotehow does the stage area work? am i gonna have to watch mmj play from a mile away or will they be on a smaller stage that i can stake out?
there are about 6 or 7 stages. don't know yet what stage they'll be on but you can usually get pretty close.
see

last 2 times they played the which stage and some tent.
wonder if a four month old baby can do camping? any suggestions out there? :)
You should get in touch with a dead head. I have been to many show where there are litterly new borns out there in the camping fracas and even in the shoes. Can't tell you that they will give you any great info but who....maybe worth a try.
D.
Quotewonder if a four month old baby can do camping? any suggestions out there?
John, my parents used to take me camping all the time when I was a baby. They had an old VW van, and made a little hammock that I slept in. Apparently there was a little auto accident, though... Something about ice, and slippy roads, and getting knocked into a tree. I was sleeping in the hammock. This is not the positive "yeah go for it!" post I meant to write...
You could totally do it. Just be really careful about the nutters... Maybe your little babe could sleep in the MMJ van?
haHAHA!
I totally respect the comment about DMB fans. As he was coming up, I, and everyone else in the world used to go see him all the time. The last time I saw him though, at Soldiers Field, the place was PACKED with high school kids who, not being sacastic in the least, were puking on every side of me. I felt like I was in that scene from Stand By Me with the blue berry pies. I would never see them again by themselves.
I'll brave the lack of showers, rain, 80 mph winds, whatever, man...anything to see MMJ again.
I think I'm gonna have to go to this. Hearing how amazing last year's set was, I almost NEED to go. Plus, Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, and the Secret Machines are playing. Hopefully Medeski, Martin and Wood will hop on, too. I can brave miles of stoners, ridiculous heat, and bad toilets for three days for this.
Yeah, it's almost like it's too ridiculous to even comprehend.
Very exciting!!
I'm buying my ticket bright and early saturday am to get the best priced tickets before they increase.
They just added a late show with Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon's new project, Mouse on Mars, Old Crow Medicine Show, and bay area band Tea Leaf Green.
This is like a whole summer tours worth of good stuff in three days. What a bargain.
Side note there are motels if you book them early enough and have the cash. For you sanitary freaks.

Something about the idea of that bus ride totally freaks me out.
i might want to go and since my buddies are diehead phishheads i think i can get a road trip together from up here in nj. a few questions. first, when do you think the rest of the tour will be announced and do you think there will be a decent amount of shows near me? if there are i might settle for those. second, whats the crowd like? i am past the point of running around drunk and high for three days sleeping in my truck. is dave matthews gonna bring scores of frat kids from sec schools readying their tailgate skills or will it be more laidback?
hi big vic,
last year the crowd was pretty laidback, all there to enjoy the music and have a good time. people from all ages really. sure there will be people drunk and high and sleeping in trucks but but for the most part it's a real friendly and laidback atmosphere. it's kinda divided in 2 parts, 1. a big huge stage where dmb will be playing for sure and 2. a handful of not so huge stages where in my opinion it's a lot cooler to wander around and see lotsa cool bands. I've been to quite a few festivals but bonnaroo is winning hands down, vibe-wise, any-wise.
2 new additions for bonnaroo:
The Black Crowes
Jurassic 5
Oh MY GOD!!!!! The Black Crows!!!!!!!!! I didn't think it could get any better, please don't let them be playing the same time as MMJ.
MotherFUCKER. Jurassic 5?
DAMN IT. I tried to see them in Edinburgh, and the damn thing was sold out.
Oh why, oh why, oh why does everyone have a stinkin' career and can't go? Stupid growing up and everyone having stupid responsibilities.
DAMN ME.

I thought you were going somewhere else with this one.
Does anyone have any suggestions on some of the lesser known bands that I should see. I know Mars Volta is one that everyone should check out, they are the current day Led Zepplin. I'm not kidding. If you have Comcast cable check out thier show that is "on demand".

Hey,this might have already been done, but I think it would be badass if everyone from the FORUM met at a designated time and place at Bonnaroo and hung around, get drunk, etc.Might be hard to organize though.Just a thought

I'm not sure what you personally would consider the "lesser known" bands, but I do know these shows get a lot of traffic and regulars. (out of the 3 I've only seen The Gourds and yes they're dynamic).
Laurie
Drive-By Truckers
The Gourds
Donna The Buffalo
QuoteI know Mars Volta is one that everyone should check out, they are the current day Led Zepplin.
I owuld have to disagree with you, in the fact that the Mars Volta is not solely based around ripping off good Willie Dixon blues songs. I would say they are more like the modern day Rush.
That said, go check out the Secret Machines, Iron and Wine, Old Crow Medicine Show, ummm.... jeez, just go check out everything. You can't really go wrong with that approach.
Drive-By Truckers play an awesome show, I saw them last april in nashville and it was great.
Also, the heat and humidity really isn't as bad as you'd think, as long as you keep plenty of water with you. I'm from outside of nashville (Smyrna, you'll pass it on I-24 on the way to bonnaroo) and during the summers I work as a land surveyor, which means i work 10 hour days in the sun wearing heavy jeans and boots. There isn't much to do about the heat, but the humidity never seems as bad if you have water or gatorade around. I really suggest buying a big can of gatorade mix or taking some sort of salty snacks with you to keep your sodium levels up, too.
Port-a-johns aren't as bad as you think, either. I used them on a regular basis last summer, and they're infinitely better than the alternative, which is taking a crap in the woods.
Quotenot solely based around ripping off good Willie Dixon blues songs.
Wow, low blow. Watch it. :o
yeah man I mean we are talking about r&r deities here...
oh, don't get me wrong. I woudn't be where I am today with the music i play if it weren't for Jimmy Page. In fact, I prefer Zep to Rush. It's just that the Mars Volta is not so much blues-rock as they are prog. And Rush is, as we all know, the greatest prog rock band of all time. Anyone who even mentions Dream Theatre needs to learn how to have taste.
no worries dude--we knew where you was comin' from ;)
Zepplin were really Progresive for thier time. The Mars Volta is as well. I see some similarities in the two bands. Many people hate The Mars Volta but I think they are just a little ahead of thier time. Which is a good thing.
I agree with that. I didn't really get into Deloused in the Comatorium until 3 months after I bought it. It's a very aquired taste, but they rock.
Just wondering if everbody has seen this ad from Relix magazine.Thought it was pretty cool!

:D
I really hope they make a giant poster like that this year.
I want that on my wall!
that has got to be the coolest concert ad ever!
Wow...i wonder who's guitar that is? ;D
antoniostrohs, that new little picture of yours is wick-ed!

Good, some Filler, they can play all these bands while I'm listening to the ones I really love.
not all filler, you need to check out Robert Randolph. He's amazing, especially if he's playign with Medeski. I'm defintely checking that one out.

Hey you guys, does anybody know if any of the bands are Canadian, or have Canadian players in them? The ones that I know are not, but I thought I'd check here to see first before I check out each band... Anybody know offhand?
hot off the press...
- Bob Weir and RatDog
- Signal Path
- Heartless Bastards
- Josh Ritter
Hmm, don't know any of those guys (yet)
Except Josh Ritter, why is that so familiar. Josh Ritter.
On his website nothing seems familiar.
Man, this is going to drive me nuts.
When are they going to announce Pearl Jam damnit!!!
RatDog is the group of former Grateful Dead guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir. I saw them in concert once, they weren't great, weren't bad. I bet they do a pretty good open air concert though.
QuoteWhen are they going to announce Pearl Jam damnit!!!
Haha, not likely, unfortunately.
more!

Old '97s!! ROCK!! Extremely cool. Thanks Riny!
despite the oh-so cutesey-ness of rhett miller, the old 97s rawk. their live show is pretty awesome.
Despite?
Oh right. You're a boy. ;)
old 97s totally rock.
lucky you all.
The Frames are ausome and from what I've heard, a great live band.
Well that's just great...
My best friend is getting married...I'm in the friggin' thing...and of course he had to pick Bonnaroo weekend to have it.
Please help a fellow devoted MMJ fan out (born and raised Louisvillian) and see if YOU or ANYONE YOU KNOW can purchase this ticket from me for what I paid for it: $182.50. For a cool 190, I'll even next-day it to you via the choice of your carrier (UPS, USPS, FEDEX, DHL...does anyone really use these people?).
I Paypal and, yes, I also have a physical address to which money orders, checks, and/or drugs of the appropriate value can be mailed to me (just kidding...please, don't send me drugs.) Anyhow...just drop an e-mail to johnelgrande@homtail.com if you can help.
Looking forward to hearing just how much MMJ and all the other great bands will rock this year.
woah. Talk about a sonuvabitch.
Sorry dude! (Maybe you should give them your Bonnaroo ticket for a wedding present! ;))
So on the mmj myspace site, it looks like they're playing Bonnaroo on the 11th, which is the Saturday... Anybody know if this is fer sure?
Info I have says sunday 2nd stage 4:00-5:30. I'll have to leave the Ratdog set early to get to the Jacket on time.
where are you guys getting this info? any news on other bands?
I don't know if it's official or even correct, but I have the whole lineup.
Goto the Bonnaroo website click on elist-discussion list
click on the link that says list archives.
click on week 2 for may scroll down until you see a thread for each of the three days.
I can't wait.
Thanks Otter!! Okay, so MMJ is on Sunday. Damn, though, John Prine and J5 are playing at the same time and bleed into DBT.
I must look more closely when my eyes don't want to shut so bad.
Many tough decisions on where to be when. I will be at the John Prine stage for sure.
Sunday is really when I run into issues. My friday and Saturday was relatively easy to schedule.
I can't believe I have to pick between Kings Of Leon, M. Ward and Iron and Wine. ??? I can tell you right now, don't bother be during any of the 10hrs that Widespread Panic will be jaming on the only active stage because I'll be asleep in my tent.
QuoteKings Of Leon, M. Ward and Iron and Wine.
Yeah, that is definitely going to have to be a runner for me.
sonumabitch.
WAaait a second - you don't have to pick between Iron and Wine - he's way later, plus then you can do halves with him and the Black Crowes (because you love them, right?)
I won't miss one second of The Black Crows Set, I may have to split time between M.Ward and Kings of Leon.
QuoteI won't miss one second of The Black Crows Set, I may have to split time between M.Ward and Kings of Leon.
I know. Me and my brother were discussing that this morning. That one is probably the one that sucks the most for me. I've seen M. Ward twice in the last couple of months, but I love him and want to see him more. But, I've never seen KOL. I think I'll have to go to M. Ward first, and then catch the end of KOL. Unless I can't steal away from the Wardian goodness, which might be the case... Plus Rachel will be drumming. And she uses fancy mallets :)
new bands:
-Les Claypool performing with Gabby La La
-Kermit Ruffins & The Barbecue Swingers
-Keren Ann
-Dr. Dog
-DJ Motion Potion
the schedule is now online at www.bonnaroo.com
Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! They have to stop, I'm going to explode.
I saw Primus in (holy fuck) '92?! :-[ It'll be nice to see Mr. Bass play again.
AND that's totally awesome that they'll have Dr. Dog.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Saturday Night is the perfect night for a big MMJ get together JAM Session. Once Iron And Wine Finishes up I'll be ready to party at the camp site. Bring your geetah's boy's and girl's, let's GET IT ON!!!!!! I don't plan on taping any of the act's scheduled at Bonnaroo but I would love to record our private jam on my new recording equipment. I'm especially looking forward to taping a live version of "Time"..............Megan! Oh Yeah, and the 5 Star Dodge Ball Theme Song. ;D
That sounds good. I have to double check, but I'm pretty sure when I was looking at the schedule yesterday, I remember thinking "What the hell will I do past 9pm?" Plus, I went and saw some "jam" bands tonight, and my brother said "This is what happens at Bonnaroo at night." So, ah, yeah. I am in for Saturday.
Dodgeball Theme Song. Awesome. :)
(I'm debating bringing the autoharp. I'm already bringing the guitar, but man, the autoharp is really amazing. And it's not too big. If there's enough room in the car, I think I'll bring the autoharp. I'm also not sure that I can live without it for two and a half weeks.)
Five words......................Bring The Fucking Auto Harp!!!! and the thing you used to play "I Want To Celebrate With You Tonight" Thank You Megan!!
QuoteFive words......................Bring The Fucking Auto Harp!!!! and the thing you used to play "I Want To Celebrate With You Tonight" Thank You Megan!!
Honey, your enthusiasm ROCKS!!
Done. autoharp, check. xylophone, check. guitar, check. And I'll probably bring the tambourine, too, so that Jen has something to participate with. (Jen is my best friend who will be there, too.) And I know my brother isn't on this board, either, but he'll be there, too. And he is AWESOME. And he plays and sings. And we sing harmonies. :)
Oooooohhhhhh maaaaaaaannnnn.
Plus, that's really great that we can record stuff. That way our peeps who can't be there can at least hear it. (If they want to, that is. ;))

Yeah, I want to hear it!
But don't feel pressured to have something good on tape!
Just have fun... that should be no problem...
I absolutely love M. Ward, but Kings of Leon may be the best band in the world right now. I have no idea which one to pick.
I may not get a chance to see M. Ward for a long time...but I'm seeing Kings on August 20th...ah I was afraid of this...not to mention Jack Johnson and Iron and Wine! :-/
Dude. You need to choose M Ward. That is my professional, highly specialized opinion. (I've seen him twice since February.)
Also, if it were me (and it will be), I would choose Iron & Wine.
Both of these choices are (I think) more mellow than their compatriots. However, I am sure that My Morning Jacket will rock your socks off enough for years to come. :)
my vote is for M Ward...
Oh yeah, M. Ward baby. Do not miss him! Save the Kings for later. ;)
AAAHHHHHH I just got my tickets in the mail!!! (Wow, they travelled a crazy way, too - Charlottesville VA, Louisville KC, Mississauga ON, and then me.) I know it's retarded to get excited about the physical tickets, but I was worried they wouldn't come before I leave.
And, holy fucking shit - has anybody seen these things? These are the best looking tickets I have ever seen in my life. I think I remember reading that they're meant to be collector's items or something, right?
***spoiler if you're going - just wait until you get your tickets in the mail, it's nicer that way***
They're fucking shiny and have a guitar on them.
**end of spoiler**
Okay, I'd better not say anything else.
Except this:
"Please help us keep the scene clean and green for you and your neighbours. Let's only leave a positive vibe with the city of Manchester."
Fucking awesome. These organizers have seriously got their shit together. That makes me really, really happy.
Got mine! These things are sweet.
Okay pals. So, we are set to jam on Saturday night after the good music ends and the jam bands begin. (ooooohhhhhh)
Should we pick a point to meet? Or should we just head over to the tents, bring out our whatever and assume that the universe will take care of us finding each other?
I'm fine with either one. I know it's early, but I'm leaving early Thursday, and am not sure how much access I'll have to internet.
Anybody got any good ideas? I suppose I could just start strumming the autoharp... That might round everybody up. ;) Just like a dinner triangle.
why dont we plan on meeting somewhere. or should we exchange cell phone numbers and try to find eachother that way?
Howsabout the Iron and Wine tent. Right after them, we should all congregate right outside the iron and wine tent. We should have a codeword to yell: like "dirty rutabaga" and that will be how we'd locate eachother. And we can post some hawt pix of our fine selves on here for identification purposes.
Either that, or we can all just take a plain white T-shirt and write "Wearin the Jacket" or something cunning on the front. Then we'd have memorobilia along with our awesomeness.
By the way, is anybody else planning on checking out the Secret machines at midnight?
Oh mylanta. Ha ha ha ha ha.
I could meet after Iron & Wine. I don't know about shouting Dirty Rutabaga. I think I might be too shy to do that.
I'll have had a little hang with Brian/sweatboard by then, and Eisey I remember what you look like from your haircut picture. If anybody doesn't know what I look like, I can point you to a website where I'm plastered all over it. (Unfortunately it costs $19.95 to view, but it's worth it!) (just kidding) I'll be with another girl and probably my brother and his friends. I think if we plan on joining up at Iron and Wine, a couple of us will find each other, and then we can look for de peoples.
My real name is Megan. :)
As far as cellphone, my bro has said that it's tricky to use them up there, and I'm really trying not to use mine while I'm away because it's going to cost a million dollars.
yeah that sounds cool. If we just look for eachother we're bound to meet up, since Iron and Wine will be in a tent. If we aren't all found by the end of it, we can just kinda hang till we're all assimilated.
Megan, I have no clue what you look like, so any visual aide available would be much appreciated. We shoudl make sure we know what everybody looks like, or at least the people who aren't as likely to find your herd.
(Maybe the t-shirts would still be a halfway decent idea?)

It's finally here ladies and gents. If your meeting up Saturday Night it's the Iron and Wine Tent after the show start moving toward the stage. I'll wear my t-shirt with my avitar on it. It's got five stars on the back (I know I'm a Dork) it should be easy to spot me. Just a warning, I am bringing the lyrics to the Pina Colada song so get ready.
Wow the tour's really got off with a bang! It's great to see all you guys meeting up and having a great time together. Really pleased for you (and not a little jealous - no sign of a European leg yet :'()
Have a fabulous time - and if they don't cover the Pina Colada song you'll just have to record it yourselves ;D
