Okay, I'm going on a camping trip directly after the Palace Show tomorrow, so I'm going to go ahead and turn in my review in advance...
MMJ took the stage early, surprising some and relieving a few who had made a long journey to downtown Louisville with their fingers crossed hoping to see the Jacket. As the band picked up their instruments and took in the scene I stood up from my seat in the fourth row and yelled back to all the doubters, "I told you so!". For the next hour the Jacket played a wonderful set with no sound issues, pleasing the jacket fans and converting some Wilco fans. It was the first time I've ever seen an opening act do an encore! The new songs sound great! Louisville fans have come to expect the unexcepted when it comes to the jacket! Oh yeah, and Wilco was pretty good, too.
I'll submit a more detailed account after the show actually happens. I hope you all took my early advice and got good seats!
I'm betting on the puppets making another apperance.
ok the wife and i are coming down early to spend most of the day in the da ville which i dont know much about. theres been so much listed on here about things to do and places to see, but im wondering if anyone is planning to meet up before the show for drinks and what not? should be great!
How about this for a potential set list for the hometown Louisville fans.
Wordless Chorus
It Beats For You
Gideon
What A Wonderful Man
Off The Record
Into The Woods
Anytime
Lay Low
Knot Comes Loose
Dondante
encore (crowd going ballistic)
Lil Billy
;D Now that would have me kicking myself in the ass for eternity for not being there.
Hey Riny. What time should I show up to the Palace? ;) ;)

sounds like Uncle Riny took in some local color whilst he was here... ;)
hey louisville crowd,
i hope you have a wonderful homecoming with the jacket. can't wait to hear all about it! :D
Some people just got thier faces and hearts melted! I'm sending a 50 spot to the first person that post the set list. ;)

that'd be a hard dessert to skip, good call
I'm sure others will post much more glowing reviews of the show last night, but here's my two cents. The was good, very solid. I wouldn't say amazing though. I'll echo what others have said about how I'd rather see MMJ headline. The opening gigs are too short and usually only half the audience cares. I was suprised to see it was much the same in the band's hometown last night. For one thing, they started 15 minutes before the ticket time, so there was hardly anyone even there for the first three songs. By the time the house got full, they were nearly finished anyway. Contrary to popular specualtion, there were no "secret suprises" or anything.
As for the actual set, it was a solid performance. The band was "on" like usual, despite the mellow crowd. Maybe I was still just on a high from the crowd energy in Athens a few weeks ago... This set was pretty standard for these last few weeks' shows, just new stuff and It Still Moves tracks. I think it was the following:
- Prince cover (title?)
- Off the Record
- One Big Holiday
- Don Dante (I think? it was new)
- Golden
- Run Thru
- Mageetah
- Then Wilco brought the whole band back out for a two-band jam of Don't Fear the Reaper w/ three cowbells. Hilarious.
Yeah, kevinjanes pretty much summed it up. I got a call from a buddy saying the Jacket was coming on 15 minutes early and we dropped our beers and ran like hell. We missed the first minute or two of Prince.
Anyway, the show was solid--the setlist was exactly how kevinjanes posted. No suprises, no great shakes, just another solid Jacket performance. Dondante is definitely epic.
Wilco was completely on. Jeff got emotional when thinking the road crew and band for the tour--and actually shed a few tears--the crowd went nuts. The Reaper moment at the end was hilarious--Jim came out with a straight haired wig on (looked like the Beastie Boys in the "Sabotage" video. Alright.
I almost shed a tear when Jeff Tweedy started to cry.
It was an kick ass show, Don't Fear The Reaper with MMJ to close out the night was ausome!
I HAVE to see Pictures of this!!!
Back from the show at 1 am Nashville time, then to work by 8 this morning (am I getting too old for this?). Highlights:
-the kind folks in Louisville, the Highlands, Bardstown Rd, Lynn's Paradise, ice cofee, etc...it was hot as a mo fo yesterday!
-again, the kind folks in Louisville, this time the officers from the sherrif's dept outside the Palace. I asked them if it was legal to sell my 2 extras and they said it wasn't. They also said if they didn't see it, then they couldn't do anything about it. They were very nice, and I'll say, having a pleasant experience with a police officer is memorable.
-miracling the 2 guys playing guitar out front of the Palace with our 2 extra's on ROW CC. I hope you guys enjoyed the show! Spread the love!
-talking to Tommy's parents outside before going in. Really nice and engaging folks (no suprise there).
-meeting the new sound guy's mother and his little brother. Very personable and warm folks (MMJ would have it no other way).
-little strange that they would not announce MMJ opening, then having them start at 7:40. We were there at 7:15, so we saw it all, but many came in late.
-Really great seeing them at the Palace. Sound was a little small compared to Headliners/Exit-In/40 Watt. I like my eardrums to bleed a little.
-Really liked extra added ending to OBH. Sort of a false ending, where it usually breaks off, but Jim had a fuzz and different cord and then went back into it.
-DonDante was the best I have seen (the third time). Probably translates better to a quieter venue.
-WILCO started out like they were tired (compared to Memphis 4 months ago). They picked it up and rocked and delivered. JT through props to "the hometown heroes" and how they would miss them opening.
-Encore of Don't Fear the Reaper. Patrick in front of the drums on cowbell, Tommy and sound guy off to the right with cowbells. jim stage left on guitar, wearing some crazy, short hair wig. Bo and Carl playing. You could tell they were having a great time and they really enjoyed themselves.
-Met Jim's little bro after the show; my wife scored a Reaper lyric sheet from the guitar guy (we call him Slayer, but he answers to "baby" (according to my wife)).
-All in all, a magical night. After MMJ got through, it was like, "now WILCO?" Are you kidding me? (I'm a fan). When they were all up there jamming to Reaper, it was a bit surreal; 2 bands I have seen 6 or 7 times, playing together.
-It was MMJ opening up for WILCO. I was elated to get to see the boys play a solid 50 minute set. I would be elated to see them play for 20. I'll see you guys on the headling fall/winter tour, rocking elbow to elbow, enjoying the Jacket in all the headlining glory we know they have earned and deserve! ;D ;D

great review man, sounds awesome. what is jim's brother like?
you know.. it's funny.. we call the guitar guy slayer too.. he must have been wearing the same shirt
man that show was fucking amazing, not only mmj but wilco blew my mind too :o do you all know if anyone recorded this show?? ???
I saw two rigs at the show. I can't wait for it to pop up but maybe we'll have to wait until after the fourth.
BTW, the show was amazing. I long for the day when MMJ headlines the Palace but seeing them on stage with Wilco kicking Blue Oyster Cult alone was worth the price of the ticket. I thought Tweedy was hilarious, calling out the assholes in the front row who were talking on their cell phone, etc.. That was my first time seeing Wilco but it seemed to me like they had their whole souls into that performance. The dynamic of Wilco/MMj fans was interesting. I was in the sixth row so it seemd like everyone around was there for Wilco and Wilco alone. I was glad to see such a large crowd for MMJ when it was so early and unannounced. Great show! Can't wait to see them again. Next stop, Baxter Ave. Theatres.
The show is up for download, here's the link:

This recording is missing the first song, maybe the other taper caught it. Still waiting for Wilco's set...

don dante live at the palace is quite possibly the most liberating thing i've listened to in a long time. i just listened to it in a pair of headphones here at my computer and after it was over i just sat and it felt like the walls in the room closed in on me

When I saw it the first time, it totally freaked me out. The 2nd time, I was by myself at a show, and I started to cry, and I got really weirded out that there were people around me, and I think it was Mahgeetah that played next, and that was really hard to get into. (But, you know, I did. heh.) I try not to listen to it too much at home, now, because I don't want it to get too comfortable just yet. I like how messed up it makes me feel.
Actually, I don't think I'll ever be comfortable with it. But that's a good, good, good thing.
Did anybody take pictures of this show? I'm assuming there must be a lot out there...

Okay, you went, though, right?
Please tell me you went.
Alas and alack. I did not.
And it marked the first time since 2001 that I've missed a Louisville show. It just wasn't in the cards, no babysitter, no funds for the show, so we sat this one out. :'( :'( :'(
I was there in spirit, though. There isn't a show in town that I'm not there in spirit somehow...
My eyes have filled with tears. I'm sorry for bringing it up.
Crap it.
But you're a Dad. That's a really important thing.

That's too sweet. :) It's allll good. My daughter is way more important, but like I said, I was definitely there in spirit, and now I can download the show and close my eyes and pretend I was there.
Guys, what's the deal with the Don't Fear the Reaper song. (Is that the right title?) This is a song I don't know, and people have shown shock that I don't know it. My brother is one of those people.
Is it a famous song? Is it a song that I'm crazy for not knowing?
Also, I need to know a bit about Blue Oyster Cult. Yesterday I saw a record of theirs in a store that I believe was up for like $50.
Please explain. :)
I believe that the proper title is "(Don't Fear) the Reaper". It's a old rock classic that has reached new fame recently due to the Saturday Night Live skit with Will Ferrel and Christopher Walken: "Blue Oyster Cult, Behind the Music". It's a hilarious skit about the making of the song and the addition of the cowbell to the track. Olwiggum's picture of Will Ferrell is from that skit. You should watch it as soon as possible, it's an instant classic.
As for the second part of your question, I could not imagine a time or place where any BOC album would cost $50 unless it came with a cowbell.
or THE cowbell used in the sessions...
THAT is where all that came from? (I wonder if I was told that and I forgot.)
How did I miss out on this pop phenomenon?
Heh. Somebody had to tell me about that show called Real World the other day. I hadn't heard about it. They thought I was totally crazy.

What is crazy is that the "Real World" exists at all. You should be proud that you don't know what that is...you are NOT missing anything.
not missing anything, i promise. and it's in austin this year! :o
I agree. The "Real World" is basically a soap opera for twenty somethings. But you are missing out on the BOC - Will Ferrell skit. You have to see it! :D

I will make it my top priority! :)
it truly is priceless. on the SNL will hosted, he came out in full costume and did the cowbell with queens of the stone age. it was so hilarious.
