hey everybody, please read the news page for some important information about the London shows.
I know this is gonna be a big disappointment but it's out of their hands and they'll do their best to reschedule the shows.
hope you all understand.
cc
That's unfortunate for you folks over there, but I hope the band is feeling better soon... at least the ones that aren't feeling well. :)
I'm sure they're not ALL sick.
:)
Oh wow. That's really too bad. Hope everybody's okay. :-/

Hopefully not. Let's hope whoever's ill feels well really soon. They're worth waiting for
Hope it's nothing serious & that everyone's OK.
Ccbaxter,
what info on news page????.
Nothing there I can see.
Have had my Scala tickets cancelled via an email from Ticketweb but no info about Jim's solo show for which I also have tickets.
Does that still go ahead?
first item, first column. refresh?
both shows are cancelled.
There is nothing about the shows being cancelled on any relative website.
My Morning Jacket website - nothing
Scala website - nothing
St James Church - nothing.
I'm confused as well as depressed! :'( :'( :'(
no idea why you don't see the message but here it is:
'MY MORNING JACKET TO POSTPONE LONDON SHOWS
Due to health reasons, My Morning Jacket will unfortunately have to cancel their shows on September 6th and September 7th in London along with Jim James' DJ night. The band hopes to reschedule these dates in the near future.'
message from the band:
"hey everybody...thanks so much for wanting to come to the shows in ye olde london town. we were really looking forward to coming over again and kickin it old school style, but unfortunately for health reasons we are simply unable to come-we've looked at all the options, and just cant find any way to make it possible right now. we feel strongly about this because we want to do it right or not do it at all-and right now it just cant come together.
so anyways, sorry about the inconvenience and we hope to see you again real soon.
thankyins, yer pals mmj."
hey this is a disapointment, but as long as the boys get healthy thats all that counts. Get well soon lads you are always welcome over here :)
Still can't see it CC.
But thanks so much for the prompt help.
Clearly the guys health comes first. Please give them best wishes for their health and happiness from all their fans in Blighty.
OK CC,
got it now. Not surprisingly AOL seem to be the problem. Have found the guys' message by accessing the site via Internet Explorer.
:-/
loper, I remember it took me about 18 refreshes before I saw it yesterday. :-/
you guys need to dump AOL ;)
I bet they use an enormous amount of cache to reduce their bandwith.

I'm not on AOL! I used to be, like a loooong time ago, but man that sucked. :)
what a nightmare have been waiting for both these shows for so long. Desparate to hear the new material and have so far resisted downloading new album. have wasted so much money on trains etc >:( ah well nevermind anyone have any suggestions on any alternative for tuesday and wednesday night in London?
Go and see Nile at KOKO... they're great if you like Egyptian themed hardcore death metal. Personally they scare me.
Gutted the gigs are cancelled.
Ah you guys. I feel so bad for you.
But I also feel bad for the band because I bet they really didn't want to have to cancel.
I also bet they'll be back. :)
I'm trying to think of the fun places that I went to in London... There was a great club in Brixton (which can be kind of rough, but this is about steps away from the train station, although, truthfully, I had my wallet stolen there, BUT) Ah crap what was it called? The something Arms?
I'll check. There was some great, great music there that night...
Everyone is NOT ok!
Maybe this is just another American group scared to come to London?
Maybe not, maybe there's too much bad stuff happening in USA at the moment.
Maybe someone is really really too sick to travel and play.
It sucks no matter what.
I'm down €250 on travel and accommodation. Nothing else on in London that's decent and isn't sold out.
Thanks ARCADE FIRE for making it over the water!!
I'm sure they are quite depressed about this.
I guess they probably are and I know there's a lot worse happening out there!
By the way, "The left hand shouldn't know what the right hand is doing"

There's nothing scarier than a cute little baby. ???
it freaks me out that there is a human alive that cute. but that's about it. ;)
The amount of money i've lost on this is irrelevent. I've been looking forward to these shows for so long. They won't happen again-not like this with three different nights of MMJ activity.
Damn. It's not fair.
You never know, small stakes. Hopefully they'll do at least the full show and the solo show. I know a lot of people have arranged travel and accommodation expecting a real jacket fest. It's a huge disappointment, especially after they cancelled shows over here last summer.
They know how much we are jonesin' (love that word :D) to see them over here and there's no way they would have called off the shows unless it was absolutely necessary.
Let's hope whoever's ill is on the mend really soon.

Yes, but they don't have a spaceship, sadly.

Those of us at their last London gig saw a spaceship whizz across the stage. I think Riny caught it on film. Try looking in the gallery.
Ahh...thank you Dr! :)

Short comment from the band regarding the London shows:
http://www.nme.com/news/story.htm?ID=113583
Did anyone go to the Social club last night anyway?
In some kind of mourning honour of our absent friends?
I didn't-was too depressed by the fact my tickets for tonight's show arrived two mornings ago-just to rub it in.
Get over it! But i can't!
They aint gonna come back here for ages.
You could try The Dublin Castle in Camden, they have some great bands there on Tuesday nights. Called Club Fandango or something.
Oh you guys... :'(
(that's not a sarcastic crying smiley guy, that's a real one.)
Thanks Rob.
I know EC. But this is the sad depressing truth. And it's not like it was just one show cancelled that i can get over. Every day is like a new blow! Monday-club POW, Tuesday-gig BANG and tomorrow the solo one WALLOP! When can i rest.
At least Spoon are here at the end of the month. Some consolation i spose.
here we go again...
Quotehere we go again...
What do you mean, John?
well, shows get cancelled, and people freak and take it all personal, like Jim James decided to screw over the fans. and it's not like that! i read this stuff and wonder out loud how anyone could think that way.
things happen, and i wonder why people take it all personal, like their world is crumbling because an entertainment event was postponed. maybe i'm reading too much into this, but damn!
the other thing is people act like this is only time this has ever happened to them. come on! the movie you want to see has never been sold out?? the power went out and the venue had to cancel?? shit happens.

I don't think you're being fair there. Who's said any of that? Nobody as far as I can see. People are naturally disappointed and have expressed it. I've just read the thread over and nobody's reacted as you've described. Small stakes, for example, has only said what he was feeling at the time. He hasn't criticised the band at all. Nobody has. We all wish whoever is ill the very best for their recovery.
perhaps you are right.
Quoteperhaps you are right.
I know where you're coming from, John - there have been times when people take things very personally, but I think lady doctor's right here, and I think everybody understands that all involved were really disappointed (fans and band alike).
But of COURSE things happen, and it seems like everyone understands. :)
let me clarify: I wasn't really trying to be an asshole (although it sure sounded like it) but just trying to avoid the all-out, "MMJ hates Europe" discussion we had from last year. I get that people had plans; I too have had this happen.
I'm just pointing out that sometimes there are things far more important than rock shows, or even your career. I felt we were getting to the point where it would erupt from disappointment to bitterness or something like that.
That's what I really meant.
What's more important than a rock show?!
(just kidding);)

But if we only posted stuff that was important it would be boring. And we wouldn't have a dodgeball team. And I wouldn't have found out so much about Welcome Back Kotter. Or the Gorton's fisherman. Let's hear it for the unimportant, I say ;)

My disapointment is no way directed at the band but was more born out of frustration. for me it was more than simply an entertainment event I had planned a 3 day trip to London to see my favourate band in the whole world who i havent seen play for 2 1/2 years, it was my chance to hear new material, a one in a lifetime chance to see Jim James solo in a very small intimate setting, A chance to catch up with some old friends and have a 3 day break from work. In short i had been looking forward to this event for a long time for many reasons. Now i find myself £60 out of pocket in train fares, will not be meeting old friends and find myself back in my soul destroying job when I should be in London getting F*cked and listening to the jacket. it wouldnt be as big a deal If i lived in the states as they tour often but I probably wont get the chance to see them till next year at the earliest. Im also disappointed for the band as I was hoping these shows would be a springboard for more sales and recognition in the uk. I see music as an artform and not just entertainment I live for Live Music and epecially music like the jackets which has the emotional impact to take me to places where nothing matters but the music and that moment in time. Rant over.
Here here! I'm out about £250 all together, plus 3 days lost work. Thanks guys hope you feel better.
QuoteHere here! I'm out about £250 all together, plus 3 days lost work. Thanks guys hope you feel better.
for those of you not up on conversions, thats about $425. wouldnt you be a bit pissed/sad/frustrated?
signed,
the devils advocate ;D
my god, why is so expensive??
ive never been to europe, but ive been studying england in all ways to plan for a trip there in a few years. everything in ridiculously expensive, and london is the worst, at least from wot ive seen. mixed drinks can be $14 or more in some pubs or clubs, for fucks sake!
My sister bought the tickets for me and mrs grim while we were on holiday, to take the train from Liverpool to London cost £80 each. its cheaper if you book in advance but because we were away we could only book a week in advance, throw hotel rooms for three nights into the pot and it just keeps getting more expensive. Not as expensive as repairing my broken heart! we were looking forward to this for so long, i've bored my brother in law stupid with tales of how great this band is and finally get chance to show him and they cancel! H even cut out a preview from Time out London he was so looknig forward to it. This is the second show this summer we've had cancelled on us by american artists. File under Ryan Adams.
QuoteFile under Ryan Adams.
i wouldnt file mmj under 'whiny egotistical bastard'. somewhere i read that jim wasnt feeling too well for newport, so it could be something lingering. not to sound rude or contintent-ist (like that?), but they cant be in a position to compromise their entire tour over here for a one off. sure its happened to you guys in europe before, blah blah. how many other great bands do you have other there that never come here? seriously.
Okay, 1. Ryan Adams and MMJ are different.
2. Illness can't be helped.
London IS an expensive town, and it totally totally sucks that people are out money, but even moreso are disappointed.
But I feel the need to say again that from everything we've ever heard and read about this band, they're good dudes. And they wouldn't just fuck off and not go to a show like that because they didn't feel like it or had an upset stomach or something. They're probably out money, too. I doubt anybody is really all that thrilled with the situation.
my thoughts exactly...
Ya know, MMJ was supposed to play here in Nashville, January 2nd 2004. My wife invited 6 of her friends from all across the south for a "girl's weekend", including tickets to the MMJ show (which none of them had seen). So, I bought 10 tickets to the show. The show got cancelled (departure of Johnny and Danny) so, no show. The show got re-scheduled in June, however, the ticket prices went up, so I had to fork out another $25. We saw the Jacket, we rocked.
The year before, I saw Ryan Adams at the Ryman (a HOT ticket in Nashville). Hands down, the worst, most self-indulged, matter of fact, look at me, sporadic show I have ever seen (And I love Ryan Adams on CD, ON CD!). The details of the show are infamous and well documented (lip synching/posing to 2 songs he played on the record player (Madonna/Minor Threat), stopping songs in the middle, "spontaneously" giving flowers to a woman in the front row, paying a concert goer to leave the Ryman, reading Sylvia Plath on stage(how 7th grade), totally disrespecting G Welch/D Rawlings in the middle of a song when he quit playing the drums (yes, the drums) during the middle of Dylan's "Joey" to go look for his wine bottle, etc... A wonderful 2 hour evening, chock full of about 1 hour of actual music. During the break before the encore, the Ryman was nothing but asses and elbows, heading for the exits (they opened the double doors for the exodus; they usually only do that at the END of the show).
My point? ???
IMO (and my opinion only), I would rather spend $25 and have a MMJ show cancel than have someone pay me $50 to sit through another Ryan Adams show.
See ya'll in Nashville! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
okay, if we're sharing...
In 2002, I bought 4 tickets to a show in Pittsburgh where the boys were opening for GBV. 4 @ $17 each=$68. I drove from Kentucky to Pittsburgh and spent probably $50 on gas, and maybe $100 on meals in the 3 days we were there. I stayed at a hotel and it cost me $80 for one night. We drove to the venue, only to find a handwritten note that said "Pollard's back is out, show cancelled". So, I was out $298 and I had not drove back to Kentucky yet. That might be the first time I actually added up how much I "lost" by the show being cancelled.
Bloody hell. Is it a fucking competition now? London shows cancelled. Fans with tickets express disappointment. Nobody criticises band. What's the big deal? There was no argument on this thread until John started one. Very unnecessary in my opinion.

I give up. I was merely sharing my experience with this topic. If that makes it a "competition", well I'm sorry.
so doctor, who won, conway or me? (and what do we get if we won?). ;)

did use the f word! Got a bit cross there. Not like me usually. Sorry guys.
We'll call it a draw and ask olwiggum to get us another of of those tasteful cups so you can have one each.
By the way, Ryan Adams was interviewed on a children's TV programme here and the presenter called him Bryan Adams and he went of in a huff. Sounds like a great guy :-/

I just noticed that Dr. Dog is playing at the Barfly on September 8th... I'd go to that if I lived there. They're fun dudes!
The Drive-By Truckers played in London last night. I didn't even think to post that here. :-/
They're playing in Norway tonight, but I guess that's a helluva drive, huh?
I think this thread tells everyone how much the guys are appreciated in Europe.
Lots of us have lost money over the cancellation, obviously some more than others. But wouldn't we all empathise with Jim's comments that if it's worth doing at all then its worth doing full throttle?
Would we have been appreciative if the guys had made the effort to come over, probably against doctor's orders and then given us a sub par performance?
For me (although I can't believe I'm saying that a MMJ gig is not the highlight) seeing Jim at St James Church was what I was REALLY looking forward to. A solo concert is so rare and the choice of venue seemed so perfect. To think that Jim's angelic voice might not have been at its best would have made the gig pointless, the sonic qualities of the church magnifiying the pureness of his tone. Any flaws would be cruelly exposed. We know Jim is worth better than that.
I just hope that the solo gig will also be rearranged and at the same venue.
Hey guys I didn't intend to flair up the old 'Ryan Adams is a dick' thread, my point was that he cancelled his tour this summer with like two days notice, I'm just incredably disapointed at the cancellation and needed a rant. I wouild never expect the guys to risk their health to come to this distant island.Maybe if I'm lucky someone'll get me 'Z' for Christmas as I sure as hell can't afford it now.
Enjoy the forthcoming U.S. dates.
We hope all is well over there in jacketland and can't wait til ATL. We pray for health, hair and reverb. PEACE
I think the timing of the cancellations was funny. MOJO magazine gives 'Z' album of the month, UNCUT in this month's edition promises a pretty favourable review next month (the heirs to Flaming Lips). Somebody (a manager?)sussed that England is ripe for MMJ. Bigger venues will be waiting just around the corner. 'New Fans' are on the way. Forget about the 'old fans' plans for MMJ week in London.
Why could these concerts have not ben re-scheduled and the original ticket holders guaranteed tickets next time 'round??????? Somebody from the band should answer rather than a clairvoyant please...
Too true. And well said!
Enjoy the two months of USA tours you guys.
