Title: San Francisco Shows *NOTE FROM THE BAND*
Post by: CC on Oct 28, 2005, 02:50 PM
here's a message from the band...

"hello all you nice people coming to our san-fran filmore shows. we wanted to let you know that we are going to be filming the shows for a film-but we want to try and make it a special "fantasty"(ooohhh....)  film that is more like a movie than an ordinary concert film. we want to encourage attendees to dress up in costumes (preferably "faeries and wizzards and goblins") or olde timey victorian ballroom dancing attire-big frilly skirts and top hats and tuxedos and such. we also encourage that you bring glo-sticks, flowers, magic wands or any other interesting objects that may look cool on film and glow. if you have a pumpkin and two mice that you can turn into a stagecoach drawn by horses you should ride to the show in that and our monkey butler will help you out and into the club. we want to get fun footage of people arriving and also crowd shots where it looks like it was filmed in a fantasy forest in the early 1900's. so yes- think "olde-tymey fantasy forest- or just dressy if you dont have any costumes or skrilla to spend on costumes. please spread this message to anyone you know that may be attending... and come have a grand time with us out in the forest."

-your pals, mmj.

Yeah, I keep thinking about what a brilliant backdrop that will be for Into the Woodzz.

I wonder if they'll have pumpkins.  I should send them my magic wand...  I wonder if I still have it...

:( the beauty of a band like mmj is getting lost in the songwriting, the undeniable musical performances, the energy of a live show where the members are connected with themselves, and their music. the fact that mmj does not fit any particular genre makes them even more of an empty canvas, allowed to be filled by the imagination of the listener, giving us all a great opportunity to interpret the songs in our own unique way. my imagination does not fill in the blanks with fairies and goblins. theatrics, in my opinion, can only dillute the power of great music. but i will be there for both shows nonetheless. PLEASE make the fillmore proud and do completely different setlists each night, and please bring back dancefloors. thanks

yeah, i had to throw that in there, but more than anything i'm just excited for the shows. i love them for a lot of reasons, one of which is that they are not flowery like a lot of other bands. the fantasy fairy thing sounds kind of flowery, but hopefully it'll be cool.

For those of us who won't be able to go: I would love to see some film of Alice in Wonderland characters!  Who remembers the Tom Petty video "Don't come around here no more?"   Did that song have anything specific to Alice in Wonderland?  Heck no! but it played out beautifully.

The cast of crazy characters seem in keeping with the dreamscape, fantasy or macabre images of dreams and otherworlds of the whole Z package.  Zzzzzzz those crazy bizzare mixed illogical time crossing images that take you when you're sleeping.  "Dance the Macbre"

Now I just hope I can spell.

I think given that it's San Fran, The Fillmore and more people attend shows than belong or post on this board, it'll be pretty well attired.  I'd give anything to be there.  I'd LOVE to dress up in a Victorian Ball Gown and be amongst the other costumed party-goers...and THEN get MMJ on top of that?!  Whoa.

I'll go over to the fillmore and see if they'll post something at the ticket window.  The show has not sold out yet.  But, never fear.  People out here get masked at the drop of a hat.  There are year-round costume shops in every neighborhood.  Its THE town to ask a crowd to dress up in.  What a freak show.

My Morning Jacket Filming Ye Olde Tyme Concert Film
by Staff | 10.11.2005

Kentucky's grade A, long haired, country-fuzz loving boys My Morning Jacket are playing for 2 nights, Friday November 11 and Saturday November 12, at San Francisco's Fillmore. The band will be filming these two nights for a special concert film that glorifies the days of newsies, gang fights and sepia tones. Here's a little more info with a special message straight from the band:

Ye olde Kentuckians have decreed. Go forth and get Victorian.

For more info on how to get tickets to the shows, check out the Fillmore's website. Doors open at 8 PM (get your monkey and carriage there on time) and the band play at 9 PM.

Just got back from the friday night show at the Fillmore. (Im the ONLY one dressed in the glowing top hat and tails). First off I'd like to apologize for the talky crowd. SF is REALLY bad about that. They almsot drowned out Mr. James during some of the quieter songs. It's these "scenesters" - drunk/on the wrong drugs at the wrong time - people who have no idea what the music is about. They show up to see what the people dressed up look like or becuase thier friend dragged them to a show and they try get leech onto the genuine fans by demanding hi-fives for your outward display of devotion to a great band. Hey,  Im not wearing a giant foam finger or a wedge of cheese on my head. It's not a football game. They want so badly to be cool, but just arent.  These people all suck.
MMJ do NOT suck. They rock harder and longer than about any other band I've EVER seen. They clocked in at just over 2  hours tonight. My ears are ringing and Im goin again tomorrow night. Show tonight was sold out, tomorrow is too, not even any tickets being sold on the street.  There were a few people trying to get will call no shows, but I didnt see any takers.

Title: Re: San Francisco Shows *NOTE FROM THE BAND*
Post by: ratsprayer on Nov 12, 2005, 05:37 AM
you know it sad but true that every show report apologises for city X's talkative nature as if its a certain characteristic only they have.  ive never been to the west coast at all, but ive seen shows all the way from columbia, missouri to ashevill, north carolina, and its all the same shit no matter what type of band it is, college town or not, weekday or weekend.  ive known people who went to see brian wilson when tickets were $150, and people still chatted all during the motherfucker.  shut the hell up already!  there were some really loud people talking during don dante in indy, and i saw a number of people that were pissed and seemed ready to go over and sort things.  that made me a little happier.
Title: Re: San Francisco Shows *NOTE FROM THE BAND*

I agree about the talkers, it's terrible everywhere most of the
time.    I remember someone talking over The Bear at the
March 21, 2002 Atlanta show.   Someone near this chatterer
yelled out "shut your hole!" and thankfully she did.
So if the band played over two hours in SF last night, were
there any surprises?    Anything new last night that they hadn't played yet on this tour?    We're down to only six days
'til the Dallas show!   Can't wait!

Low Dog

I hate talking in concerts.  I hate when people talk during the opener, and I hate when people talk during the headliner.  It drives me crazy.  And I hate even MORE when people talk to ME during shows.  Usually I only need to give a little stern but gentle look that indicates that I'm trying to listen.  But the other night I had to be a little more forceful.  WHY ARE YOU GOING TO A SHOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LISTEN?!

rant over.  Thank you for the music.
Title: Re: San Francisco Shows *NOTE FROM THE BAND*
Post by: tinyorangepig on Nov 12, 2005, 10:38 AM
not to derail this thread away from a great san fran show, but Dallas normally has the talkative crowd.  2 times ago when MMJ played the smaller side of the Gypsy Tea Room, midset Jim came out and played Golden and a few other songs.  The normally talkative crowd was mesmerized and you could have heard a pin drop.  It shut any talkers right up.

2 hours in San Fran sounds sweet.  Sounds like they are trying to have lots of material for the "film"

Since CC wrote this, I am assuming that it was erroneously reported that How Could I Know? (Oxen) was actually played, as originally reported?   Oh well, you can't argue with this OR any setlist they've ever done, really!   I mean, hell, it's MMJ!!!     I got really excited when I saw "Oxen"
though, and it's really cool to see that Johnny "Ringo" Quaid was there!   Just six days till the Dallas show!

Have fun,

No, they didn't dress up. I was hoping the band would dress up too, but they rocked out really hard so costumes probably wouldn't have been very comfortable for them. I would say that maybe 20% of the audience dressed up. The stage was beautiful, the guys were awesome, and everyone is going to love this dvd when it comes out!

We went to both shows at the Fill and both nights were fuckin ROCKIN!!

Kudos to the guys for putting it out all night BOTH nights so well(the dvd is gonna be STAELLAR!), and Jim's voice just sounded INCREDIBLE! Songs were perfect, and I only wished Jim would've thrown in Knot Comes Loose   - I KNOW he heard me yell it, LOL-  but they stuck to their set lists. I got Saturday night's set list (bass player's). I hope Jim enjoys the scarf I tossed at the end of the show...

The backdrop and lighting were incredible too. I had anticipated that maybe more people would come dressed up... We went all out (ALL white on Friday,  and Z + Blue ivy on Sat ) so pretty sure we'll show up on the DVD - can't fuckin WAIT for that!!!! I can't stop the songs from running thru my head (no pun intended), nor do I want them to!!!

Love to all - except the FUCKERS who were throwing shit at Jim while he was playin.  :-/ Don't people have any fucking control?

Be peace, all. See you on the DVD  ;D

Yeah, I took the hat off  for a couple seconds because it got really hot in that suit after 3 hours. I dont think I could have ever left the spot I was at for anything while they were playing and I'm glad I didn't. The guitar pick that I got is now on my monitor. It's pretty beat up, thanks to Jim's outstanding performance.

To the tophat guy complaining about the scenesters, I saw the high five incident at the Fillmore on Friday, as did my girlfriend.  We are big fans of the band and loved the show so I think we are in agreement on that point.  However, when I read my girlfriend your email she laughed for about 10 minutes before responding "that guy?!  what was his problem anyway?  Too snobby to give a high five?  He was a freak"   You are basically one of those people who likes to tell yourself that you like the band more than everyone else and deserve to be there more than they do because you don't have anything else to feel special about.  Hope next time you can relax and not be such a crabby old man.

Alright, what ever. But this high five thing I do want to hear more about. Because I am completely oblivious to it. I was directly below Jim at a couple points during the show and I could'nt tell if he was just strumming his guitar or putting his arm out to over see the crowd. I hold a large amount of repect for Jim and I wasn't about to just reach up and touch him. He's his own as am I and theres no need for that to be disrupted. chill out with your mentioning of your relationships and your preachings of relaxing, you seem like you arn't really relaxed at all.

Apparently so... by the way I was wearing a bowler and was short. I didn't have a tophat you could be confusing me with someone else

i was wearing a top hat, but i dont think anyone would call me a 'crabby old man' so maybe we're all talking past each other.

Can someone explain the 'high five' incident to me?

thanks....

We Have Hands!!!

apparently people were wanting to high five some of the people dressed up as if they had cheese on thier head like at a football game and someone took offense to this.  From what I gather, the whole thing is pretty confusing.

QuoteI saw people throwing glow necklaces and flowers at the stage. Someone hit Jim in the face with a flower.

She apologized on MySpace..apparently unintentional.  Poor thing.

I didn't think it was intentional, poor girl. I liked the flower throwing thing, it fit with the enchanted forest theme.

you need to upload them via ftp to a webserver. then paste the links to your photos in between (//HERE).  use the insert image icon above if you want.

so it will look something like this:

Here's a link I found to a flickr page with some pics from the Fillmore:

The stage had actual piles of dried leaves on it - like my lawn, only way way cooler.

pink hair! angel wings! robes!

I don't know if these viking helmets are going to cut it...  Do you think that it would be frowned upon if I wore angel wings to the Palace?

Better yet, what if I wear a Z t-shirt, angel wings, a viking helmet, and a sign that says "realdeal rulez!"  ;)  Maybe I could find an owl to stick on one of the hornz...

CCBaxter... ok, that's just breathtaking... can you e-mail me a giant version so i can turn it into wallpaper? really,  i would love to get a big print and frame it for my little house... is that cool? i would never, ever sell it or anything vile like that... for a bunch of hairy guys from the south, their sense of aesthetics is impeccable.
p.s. love those hairy guys from the south!

I know there's no release date yet but do we have a ballpark?
Thanks.
